The environmental sources of benzophenones: Distribution, pretreatment, analysis and removal techniques

Benzophenones (BPs) have wide practical applications in real human life due to its presence in personal care products, UV-filters, drugs, food packaging bags, etc. It enters the wastewater by daily routine activities such as showering, impacting the whole aquatic system, then posing a threat to human health. Due to this fact, the monitoring and removal of BPs in the environment is quite important. In the past decade, various novel analytical and removal techniques have been developed for the determination of BPs in environmental samples including wastewater, municipal landfill leachate, sewage sludge, and aquatic plants. This review provides a critical summary and comparison of the available cutting-edge pretreatment, determination and removal techniques of BPs in environment. It also focuses on novel materials and techniques in keeping with the concept of "green chemistry", and describes on challenges associated with the analysis of BPs, removal technologies, suggesting future development strategies.

Diuretics in Different Samples: Update on the Pretreatment and Analysis Techniques

Diuretics are drugs that promote the excretion of water and electrolytes in the body and produce diuretic effects. Clinically, they are often used in the treatment of edema caused by various reasons and hypertension. In sports, diuretics are banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Therefore, in order to monitor blood drug concentration, identify drug quality and maintain the fairness of sports competition, accurate, rapid, highly selective and sensitive detection methods are essential. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the pretreatment and detection of diuretics in various samples since 2015. Commonly used techniques to extract diuretics include liquid-liquid extraction, liquid-phase microextraction, solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, among others. Determination methods include methods based on liquid chromatography, fluorescent spectroscopy, electrochemical sensor method, capillary electrophoresis and so on. The advantages and disadvantages of various pretreatment and analytical techniques are elaborated. In addition, future development prospects of these techniques are discussed.

Miniaturized sample preparation methods for saliva analysis

Saliva, as the first body fluid encountering with the exogenous materials, has good correlation with blood and plays an important role in bioanalysis. However, saliva has not been studied as much as the other biological fluids mainly due to restricted access to its large volumes. In recent years, there is a growing interest for saliva analysis owing to the emergence of miniaturized sample preparation methods. The purpose of this paper is to review all microextraction methods and their principles of operation. In the following, we examine the methods used to analyze saliva up to now and discuss the potential of the other microextraction methods for saliva analysis to encourage research groups for more focus on this important subject area.

Online coupling of fully automatic in-syringe dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction with oxidative back-extraction to inductively coupled plasma spectrometry for sample clean-up in elemental analysis: A proof of concept

A proof of concept of a novel automatic sample cleanup approach for metal assays in troublesome matrixes as a front-end sample pre-treatment to inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy - ICP-OES - is herein presented. Target metals, namely, copper, lead, and cadmium were complexed in-system quantitatively using ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC) and transferred into a minute volume of toluene as extractant employing lab-in-syringe magnetic stirring-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (LIS-MSA-DLLME). After discharge of the sample, the analytes were back-extracted into nitric acid and injected on-line into ICP-OES. To promote and expedite this process in-syringe, advantage was taken from oxidative decomposition of the chelate by potassium iodate, reported in this article for the first time. Experimental conditions for LIS-MSA-DLLME were optimized by Box-Benkhen multivariate analysis using the geometric mean of analyte recoveries as the desirability function. Times of extraction and back-extraction of 300s and 100s, respectively, pH 5.5 at 30mmol/L acetate, 300µL of extraction solvent, and 600µmol/L of APDC were finally applied. Online interfacing to ICP-OES for back-extract analysis yielded average repeatabilities for Cd, Cu, and Pb of 2.9%, 3.5%, and 3.5% with limits of detections (3s) of 1.9, 1.4, and 5.6ng/mL, respectively. Oxidative back-extraction was proven reliable for the determination of metal species in coastal seawater, surrogate digestive fluids and soil leachates with recovery values for Cd, Cu, and Pb ranging from 90% to 118%, 68% to 104%, and 86% to 112%, respectively.
