Structural and particle size evolution of sol–gel-derived nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite

The coupled WO3-AgBr nanocatalyst, part II: Synthesis, characterization, and the boosted photocatalytic activity towards metronidazole in an aqueous solution

The AgBr and WO3 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and coupled, and the coupled AgBr-WO3 binary catalyst, as well as the individual AgBr and WO3 NPs, were then characterized by XRD, FTIR, DRS, and SEM-EDX. XRD results showed the formation of orthorhombic WO3 cubic AgBr crystals. The crystallite sizes of 45, 28, and 45 nm were estimated by the Scherrer formula for the as-prepared AgBr, WO3, and AgBr-WO3 catalysts, respectively. The DRS study estimated band gap energies using both absorption edge wavelengths and the Kubelka-Munk model. The band gap energies of 2.72, 3.06, and 2.92 eV were obtained for the direct electronic transitions of AgBr, WO3, and AgBr-WO3. The ECB (potential position) of AgBr and WO3 were estimated to be 0.01 and 0.52 V, while their EVB values were 2.60 and 3.55 V, respectively. Typical FTIR absorption bands of W‒OH, the W‒O‒W, and AgBr bonds have appeared at 1637 cm-1, 823 (and 766) cm-1, and 1384 cm-1, respectively. The pHpzc of 4 was estimated for the individual and coupled catalysts. In studying the photocatalytic activity of the catalysts in the photodegradation of metronidazole (MNZ) a boosted activity was achieved for the coupled system. This increased activity depends on the maximum AgBr:WO3 mole ratio in a 1:3 mol ratio. Grinding time applied to prepare the coupled catalyst has also varied the photocatalytic activity.

Hydroxyapatite Incorporated with Fe3O4@MCM-41 Core-Shell: A Promising Nanocomposite for Teriparatide Delivery in Bone Tissue Regeneration

This article presents a comprehensive study of the development of a novel nanocomposite comprising core-shell Fe3O4@MCM-41 with superparamagnetic properties and hydroxyapatite (HAp). The nanocomposite serves as a pH-responsive nanocarrier, offering an efficient injectable dosage for teriparatide (PTH (1-34)) delivery. The aim is to address the limitations associated with drug-induced side effects, precautionary measures, and frequent injections. The nanocomposites, as prepared, were characterized using techniques including X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, zeta potential, dynamic light scattering, VSM, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The nanocomposites' average crystallite diameter was determined to be 27 ± 5 nm. The hydrodynamic size of the PTH (1-34)-loaded nanocarrier ranged from 357 to 495 nm, with a surface charge of -33 mV. The entrapment and loading efficiencies were determined to be 73% and 31%, respectively. All of these findings collectively affirm successful fabrication. Additionally, in vivo medication delivery was investigated using the HPLC method, mirroring the in vitro tests. Utilizing the dialysis approach, we demonstrated sustained-release behavior. PTH (1-34) diffusion increased as the pH decreased from 7.4 to 5.6. After 24 h, drug release was higher at acidic pH (88%) compared to normal pH (43%). The biocompatibility of the PTH (1-34)-loaded nanocarrier was assessed using the MTT assay employing the NIH3T3 and HEK-293 cell lines. The results demonstrated that the nanocarrier not only exhibited nontoxicity but also promoted cell proliferation and differentiation. In the in vivo test, the drug concentration reached 505 μg within 30 min of exposure to the magnetic field. Based on these findings, the Fe3O4@MCM-41/HAp/PTH (1-34) nanocomposite, in combination with a magnetic field, offers an efficient and biocompatible approach to enhance the therapeutic effect of osteogenesis and overcome drug limitations.

New highly efficient 2D/1D HAp/g‒C3N4 photocatalyst thin film insight into crystal orientation and C‒vacancy effects

The novel synthetic Sol‒EPD process of a thin film including of well decorated g‒C₃N₄ nanotubes on plate‒like hydroxyapatite (HAp) were applied. Using Sol‒EPD designable method anisotropic growth of HAp nanocrystals on the substrate were achieved. It has provided the orientation of the different crystal facets resulted in the photogenerated O‒vacancy from phosphate groups. Based on the studied XRD pattern, EPD deposited film of HAp was oriented along c‒plane that can improve the photocatalytic activity of the designed composited film. Systematic designing was applied for decoration of g‒C₃N₄ nanotubes on the HAp under thermal condensation of melamine coincide with calcination of HAp. This new designed HAp/g‒C₃N₄ nanofilm was shown high photocatalytic efficiency and completely degradation of persistent pollutant of 4‒nitrophenol in the aqueous solution. According to the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and current density studies, the higher charge separation/low charge recombination results were obtained for composited g‒C₃N₄/HAp nano‒film comparing with the single films of HAp and urchin like g‒C₃N₄. This high separation of charge pairs should be also assigned to the special designed morphology. In addition, wrapped like structure of g‒C₃N₄ nanotubes with C‒vacancy around HAp nanoplates play key role in separation of photo‒induced charge pairs, light diffusion, and high light harvesting within hollow nanotube. It can be highlighted that the composite degraded more than 95% of 4‒nitrophenol during 90 min that after 5 runs the photocatalytic activity was not significantly changed.

Loaded n-Hydroxyapatite/SSG 3D Scaffolds as a Drug Delivery System of Nigella sativa Fractions for the Management of Local Antibacterial Infections

As a result of their close similarities to the inorganic mineral components of human bone, hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (n-HAp) are widely used in biomedical applications and for the elaboration of biocompatible scaffold drug delivery systems for bone tissue engineering. In this context, a new efficient and economic procedure was used for the consolidation of n-HAp in the presence of various Nigella sativa (NS) fractions at a near-room temperature. The research conducted in the present study focuses on the physicochemical properties of loaded n-HAp 3D scaffolds by NS fractions and the in vitro antibacterial activity against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 27853), and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 700603) bacteria. In order to better understand the effect of the inserted fractions on the HAp molecular structure, the elaborated samples were subject to Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopic analyses. In addition, the morphological investigation by scanning electron microscope (SEM) of the loaded n-HAp 3D scaffolds demonstrated the presence of a porous structure, which is generally required in stimulating bone regeneration. Furthermore, the fabricated 3D composites exhibited significant antibacterial activity against all tested bacteria. Indeed, MIC values ranging from 5 mg/mL to 20 mg/mL were found for the HAp-Ethanol fraction (HAp-Et) and HAp-Hexane fraction (HAp-Hex), while the HAp-Aqueous fraction (HAp-Aq) and HAp-Methanol fraction (HAp-Me) showed values between 20 mg/mL and 30 mg/mL on the different strains. These results suggest that the HAp-NS scaffolds were effective as a drug delivery system and have very promising applications in bone tissue engineering.

Porous Composite Granules with Potential Function of Bone Substitute and Simvastatin Releasing System: A Preliminary Study

In this work, 3D porous granules based on Zn and Se-containing calcium phosphates (CaPs) were fabricated using a droplet-extrusion technique. The composite beads varied in composition and contained two different natural polymers: sodium alginate (SA) and gelatin (GEL). To analyse and compare their physicochemical properties, such as porosity and morphology, different techniques were applied, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), sorption of N2 and mercury porosimetry. Prior to the fabrication of the granules, the properties of CaPs materials, (the bioceramic base of the beads), selenium (IV)-substituted hydroxyapatite (Se-HA) and zinc-substituted dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (Zn-DCPD), were also investigated. The results of cell viability assessment showed that Se-HA powder was non-toxic to human osteoblasts (hFOB 1.19) and simultaneously exhibited high toxicity to tumour cells (Saos-2). Once the cytotoxicity assay was completed, Se-HA and Zn-DCPD were used to prepare 3D materials. The prepared porous granules were used as matrices to deliver simvastatin to bones. Simvastatin was applied in either the lipophilic form or hydrophilic form. The release kinetics of simvastatin from granules of different composition was then assessed and compared.
