Application of response surface methodology to optimize pipette tip micro-solid phase extraction of dyes from seawater by molecularly imprinted polymer and their determination by HPLC

Dual-mode aptasensor based on P-CeO2NR@Mxene and exonuclease I-assisted target recycling for malachite green detection

Malachite green (MG) has been illicitly employed in aquaculture as a parasiticide, however, its teratogenic and carcinogenic effects pose a significant human health threat. Herein, a dual-mode colorimetric and electrochemical aptasensor was fabricated for MG detection, capitalizing on the robust catalytic and peroxidase-like activity of P-CeO2NR@Mxene and good capture efficiency of a tetrahedral DNA nanostructure (TDN) designed with multiple aptamers (m-TDN). P-CeO2NR@Mxene-modified complementary DNA (cDNA) served as both colorimetric and electrochemical probe. m-TDN was attached to AuE to capture MG and P-CeO2NR@Mxene/cDNA. The superior aptamer and MG binding to cDNA regulated signals and enabled precise MG quantification. The further introduced Exo I enabled aptamer hydrolysis, releasing MG for further binding rounds, allowing target recycling amplification. Under the optimal conditions, the aptasensor reached an impressively low detection limit 95.4 pM in colorimetric mode and 83.6 fM in electrochemical mode. We believe this dual-mode approach holds promise for veterinary drug residue detection.

Azophenyl Calix[4]arene Porous Organic Polymer for Extraction and Analysis of Triphenylmethane Dyes from Seafood

Porous organic polymers (POPs) based on calix[4]arene with a hydrophobic π-rich cavity and host-guest recognition properties exhibit a wide application range of molecular extraction and separation. However, it is still a challenge to improve the extraction and separation selectivity by exploring and seeking appropriate building blocks for the functionalization and pore size adjustment of calix[4]arene. Herein, an azophenyl calix[4]arene porous organic polymer (AC-POP) was proposed. By introducing an electron-rich cavity and adjusting the pore sizes of calix[4]arene, the AC-POP showed high selectivity extraction performance in triphenylmethane (TPM) dyes. The extraction mechanism was explored by adsorption thermodynamics study, density functional theory (DFT) calculation, and reduced density gradient (RDG) and electrostatic potential (ESP) analyses, which suggested that the selectivity adsorption of TPM dyes based on AC-POP was mainly the result of entropy driven by the hydrophobic effect. In addition, the noncovalent interactions including π-π stacking, van der Waals force, and electrostatic interaction were also important factors affecting the adsorption capacity of TPM dyes. Under optimal extraction conditions, the AC-POP possessed a maximum extraction amount of 95.3 mg·g-1 for Rhodamine B (RB), high enrichment factor of about 100, and excellent reusability more than 10 times. Then, an analytical method of TPM dyes with AC-POP as a solid-phase extractant combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) was established, which displayed excellent sensitivity with the limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantitation (LOQs) in the ranges of 0.004-0.35 and 0.016-1.16, respectively. The mean recoveries for TPM dyes ranged from 85.0 to 109.4% with an RSD of 0.48-9.45%. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of the five TPM dyes in seafood matrix samples.

Urea-linked covalent organic framework functionalized polytetrafluoroethylene film for selective and rapid thin film microextraction of rhodamine B

Incorporation of highly selective and stable adsorbent with facile extraction technology is desired in practical analysis. Here we show the rational preparation of a urea-linked covalent organic framework functionalized polytetrafluoroethylene film (COF-117-PTFE) with ordered porous structure, rich functional groups, and large surface area-to-volume ratio as the effective adsorbent for convenient, selective and rapid thin film microextraction (TFME) of rhodamine B (RB). The COF-117-PTFE based TFME coupled with high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD) successfully realized the determination of RB with the limit of detection of 0.007 μg L^-1, the linear range of 0.1 - 100 μg L^-1. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of intraday (n = 5) and interday (n = 5) for the determination of 10 μg L^-1 RB were 2.3% and 6.8%, respectively. The absolute recoveries were 80.3%, 71.2% and 67.9% in river water, chili powder and Sichuan pepper powder, respectively. The recoveries for RB spiking in complicated real samples (dry chili, chili powder, dry Sichuan pepper, Sichuan pepper powder and river water) ranged from 90.4% to 107.5%. The developed COF-117-PTFE based TFME-HPLC-FLD method is promising in practical application. This work reveals the high potential of functionalized COF film as the adsorbent for effective extraction of trace contaminants in complicated samples.

Determination of profenofos in seawater and foodstuff samples after its molecularly imprinted polymer pipette-tip micro solid phase extraction optimized by response surface methodology

Background

In this research, a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized and employed as a sorbent for pipette-tip micro solid phase extraction of profenofos insecticide in seawater, rice, and fish samples. The instrument employed for quantitation was spectrophotometry.

Results

Various factors affecting the microextraction protocol, including type and volume of the elution solvent, weight of MIP, pH and volume of sample solution, and number of cycles of loading and desorption were considered and optimized using one-factor-at-a-time, central composite design and Box-Behnken design. Factors optimized at: pH 4.0, amount of sorbent 2.5 mg, volume of methanol:acetic (9:1) acid as eluent 250 µL, both the number of extraction and elution cycles 5, and volume of sample 8.0 mL. At optimized conditions, an enrichment factor of 31 was achieved and the linearity range of the method was between 1.0 and 1000.0 µg/L. A good detection limit of 0.33 µg/L with a reproducibility better than 5.6% (as RSD) was observed.

Conclusion

The technique showed good analytical features for determination of profenofos in seawater, rice, and fish samples. Simplicity of operation of spectrophotometry and lack of using expensive HPLC grade solvents are other points of strengths of this method. The total analysis time was about 10 min, which is far less than techniques such as HPLC. Comparison between optimization with central composite design and Box–Behnken design showed better performance of the former.

Chromium-based metal organic framework for pipette tip micro-solid phase extraction: an effective approach for determination of methyl and propyl parabens in wastewater and shampoo samples

BACKGROUND

A chromium-based metal organic framework was synthesized and employed as an efficient sorbent for pipette tip micro-solid phase extraction and preconcentration of parabens from wastewater and shampoo samples up to sub-ppb level before their spectrophotometric analysis.

RESULTS

Factors affecting preconcentration including volume and type of solvent, amount of sorbent, number of extraction, and volume and pH of samples were optimized employing one-variable-at-a-time and response surface methodology. Obtained analytical characteristics of the method proves its usefulness for analysis of real samples. Linear range of the method for parabens was 1.0-200.0 μg/L. Detection limit of the protocol was 0.24 µg/L for propyl paraben and 0.25 µg/L for methyl paraben. Reproducibility of the protocol defined as % RSD was better than 5.78%. Synthesized adsorbent can be re-used for at least 20 extractions.

CONCLUSION

The method showed a good detection limit and precision for determination of methyl- and propyl-paraben in wastewater and shampoo samples.

The Use of Computational Methods for the Development of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the use of theoretical and computational approaches in the study and development of molecular imprinting systems. These tools are being used to either improve understanding of the mechanisms underlying the function of molecular imprinting systems or for the design of new systems. Here, we present an overview of the literature describing the application of theoretical and computational techniques to the different stages of the molecular imprinting process (pre-polymerization mixture, polymerization process and ligand-molecularly imprinted polymer rebinding), along with an analysis of trends within and the current status of this aspect of the molecular imprinting field.

Review on molecular imprinting technology and its application in pre-treatment and detection of marine organic pollutants

Molecular imprinting technology (MIT) has been considered as an attractive method to produce artificial receptors with the memory of size, shape and functional groups of the templates and has become an emerging technique with the potential in various fields due to recognitive specificity, high efficient selectivity and mechanical stability, which can effectively remove background interference and is suitable for the pre-treatment and analysis of trace level substances in complex matrix samples. Nearly 100 papers about the application of MIT in the detection of marine pollutants were found through Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). On this basis, combined with the application of MIT in other fields, the pre-treatment process of marine environmental samples was summarized and the potential of four types of different molecularly imprinted materials in the pre-treatment and detection of marine organic pollutants (including antibiotics, triazines, organic dyes, hormones and shellfish toxins) samples was evaluated, which provides the innovative configurations and progressive applications for the analysis of marine samples, and also highlights future trends and perspectives in the emerging research field.

[Recent advance of new sample preparation materials in the analysis and detection of environmental pollutants]

针对复杂样品的分析和痕量目标物的检测,样品前处理是必不可少的,高效的样品前处理技术不仅可以去除或减小样品基质干扰而且能够实现分析物的富集,提高分析检测的准确性和灵敏度。近年来,固相萃取、磁分散固相萃取、枪头固相萃取、搅拌棒萃取、固相微萃取等高效的样品前处理技术已在环境污染物分析检测中获得广泛关注,萃取效率主要取决于萃取材料,所以新型的高效萃取材料一直是样品前处理研究领域的重要发展方向。该文总结和讨论了近年来新型样品前处理材料在环境污染物分析检测中的研究进展,主要聚焦在石墨烯、氧化石墨烯、碳纳米管、无机气凝胶、有机气凝胶、三嗪基功能材料、三嗪基聚合物、分子印迹聚合物、共价有机框架材料、金属有机框架材料以及它们的功能化萃取材料等。这些材料已经被应用于环境样品中不同类别污染物的萃取富集,如重金属离子、多环芳烃、塑化剂、烷烃、苯酚、氯酚、氯苯、多溴联苯醚、全氟磺酸、全氟羧酸、雌激素、药物残留、农药残留等。这些样品前处理材料具有高的表面积、大量的吸附位点,并涉及多种萃取机理如π-π、静电、疏水、亲水、氢键、卤键等相互作用。基于这些萃取材料的多种样品前处理技术与各类检测方法如色谱、质谱、原子吸收光谱、荧光光谱、离子迁移谱等相结合,已广泛应用于环境污染物的高灵敏分析检测。最后,该文总结了样品前处理发展中存在的问题,并展望了其未来在环境分析中的发展趋势。

Recent advances in micro- and nanomaterial-based adsorbents for pipette-tip solid-phase extraction

There are a lot of review papers of sample pretreatment, but the comprehensive review on pipette-tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE) is lacking. This review (133 references) is mainly devoted to the development of different types of micro- and nanosorbent-based PT-SPE, including silica materials, carbon materials, organic polymers, molecularly imprinted polymers, and metal-organic frameworks. Each section mainly introduces and discusses the preparation methods, advantages and limitations of adsorbents, and their applications to environmental, biological, and food samples. This review also demonstrates the advantages of PT-SPE like convenience, speed, less organic solvent, and low cost. Finally, the future application and development trend of PT-SPE are prospected.

Nanoparticle coatings for stir bar sorptive extraction, synthesis, characterization and application

During the last ten years, number of articles published on synthesis and applications of nano-particles (NPs) have been increased by a factor of 40. One of the most interesting applications of NPs is their using as high capacity, robust and highly selective coatings for stir bar sorption extraction (SBSE). Utilizing NPs greatly promoted applications of SBSE and has gained importance on green sample preparation. In this article, all available literature on nano-coatings as media for microextraction by stir bar is reviewed. This includes non-functionalized NPs (mostly, metallic/metallic oxide and graphene based), functionalized coatings, and decorated coatings (both mono- and multifunctional). Various applications, advantages and disadvantages of each nano-coated prepared stir bar are discussed in detail along with critical evaluation of currently available methods.

Ultrasound-assisted hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent based solid-liquid microextraction of Sudan dyes in spice samples

An environmentally friendly, simple method was carried out with the help of an ultrasonic assisted solid-liquid microextraction technique using a new deep eutectic solvent (DES) for the extraction and determination of Sudan dyes (I-IV) in spice samples. In this method, parameters affecting the optimization were researched and optimized such as DES composition, DES volume, ultrasonic time, temperature and, centrifuge time. The analytical performance of the developed method was quite satisfactory, the R² values were higher than 0.9989, and the limits of quantification were <1.17 μg g^-1. Two different concentrations (10-50 μg g^-1) were spiked to Chili peppers, paprika, cumin and sumac spices for the applicability and accuracy of the developed microextraction method. Some of these spices were found to contain Sudan I and IV dyes. The recovery values for spiked samples were found to be between 85.55% and 99.29% and relative standard deviations were found to be <3.17% when using a 10 μg g^-1 Sudan dyes concentration. The results showed that the developed method can be successfully applied for extraction and determination of Sudan dyes in spice samples.

Separation and determination of ciprofloxacin in seawater, human blood plasma and tablet samples using molecularly imprinted polymer pipette-tip solid phase extraction and its optimization by response surface methodology

By synthesizing a molecular imprinted polymer as an efficient adsorbent, ciprofloxacin was micro-extracted from seawater, human blood plasma and tablet samples by pipette-tip micro solid phase extraction and determined spectrophotometrically. Response surface methodology was applied with central composite design to build a model based on factors affecting on microextraction of ciprofloxacin; including volume of eluent solvent, number of extraction cycles, number of elution cycles, and pH of sample. Other factors that affect extraction efficiency, such as type of eluent solvent, volume of sample, type, and amount of salt were optimized with one-variable-at-a-time method. Under optimum extraction condition, pH of sample solution was 7.0, volume of eluent solvent (methanol) was 200 µL, volume of sample solution was 10 mL, and the number of extraction and elution cycles was five and seven, respectively, amount of Na₂ SO₄ (as salt) and MIP (as sorbent) were optimized at 150 and 2 mg, respectively. The linear range of the suggested method under optimum extraction factors was 5-150 µg/L with a limit of detection of 1.50 µg/L for the analyte. Reproducibility of the method (as relative standard deviation) was better than 7%.
