Recent Developments in the Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Solutions Using Various Nanomaterials

Water pollution is caused by heavy metals, minerals, and dyes. It has become a global environmental problem. There are numerous methods for removing different types of pollutants from wastewater. Adsorption is viewed as the most promising and financially viable option. Nanostructured materials are used as effective materials for adsorption techniques to extract metal ions from wastewater. Many types of nanomaterials, such as zero-valent metals, metal oxides, carbon nanomaterials, and magnetic nanocomposites, are used as adsorbents. Magnetic nanocomposites as adsorbents have magnetic properties and abundant active functional groups, and unique nanomaterials endow them with better properties than nonmagnetic materials (classic adsorbents). Nonmagnetic materials (classic adsorbents) typically have limitations such as limited adsorption capacity, adsorbent recovery, poor selective adsorption, and secondary treatment. Magnetic nanocomposites are easy to recover, have strong selectivity and high adsorption capacity, are safe and economical, and have always been a hotspot for research. A large amount of data has been collected in this review, which is based on an extensive study of the synthesis, characterization, and adsorption capacity for the elimination of ions from wastewater and their separation from water. The effects of several experimental parameters on metal ion removal, including contact duration, temperature, adsorbent dose, pH, starting ion concentration, and ionic strength, have also been investigated. In addition, a variety of illustrations are used to describe the various adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm models, providing insight into the adsorption process.

DFT Investigation of the Molecular Properties of the Dimethylglyoximato Complexes [M(Hdmg)2] (M = Ni, Pd, Pt)

Important applications of the NiII, PdII and PtII complexes [M(Hdmg)2] (H2dmg = dimethylglyoxime) stem from their metal...metal stacked virtually insoluble aggregates. Given the virtual insolubility of the materials, we postulated that the rare reports on dissolved species in solution do not represent monomolecular species but oligomers. We thus studied the structural and spectral properties of the monomolecular entities of these compounds using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT computations in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent. The molecular geometries, IR and UV-vis spectra, and frontier orbitals properties were computed using LANL2DZ ecp and def2TZVP as basis sets and M06-2X as the functional. The results are compared with the available experimental and other calculated data. The optimised molecular geometries proved the asymmetric character of the two formed O–H…O bonds which connect the two Hdmg‒ ligands in the completely planar molecules. Calculated UV-vis spectra revealed the presence of three absorptions in the range 180 to 350 nm that are red-shifted along the series Ni–Pd–Pt. They were assigned to essentially ligand-centred π−π* transitions in part with metal(d) to ligand(π*) charge transfer (MLCT) contributions. The notorious d‒p transitions dominating the colour and electronics of the compounds in the solid-state and oligomeric stacks are negligible in our monomolecular models strongly supporting the idea that the previously reported spectroscopic observations or biological effects in solutions are not due to monomolecular complexes but rather to oligomeric dissolved species.

Application of magnetic nanomaterials in bioanalysis

The importance of magnetic nanomaterials and magnetic hybrid materials, which are classified as new generation materials, in analytical applications is increasingly understood, and research on the adaptation of these materials to analytical methods has gained momentum. Development of sample preparation techniques and sensor systems using magnetic nanomaterials for the analysis of inorganic, organic and biomolecules in biological samples, which are among the samples that analytical chemists work on most, are among the priority issues. Therefore in this review, we focused on the use of magnetic nanomaterials for the bioanalytical applications including inorganic and organic species and biomolecules in different biological samples such as primarily blood, serum, plasma, tissue extracts, urine and milk. We summarized recent progresses, prevailing techniques, applied formats, and future trends in sample preparation-analysis methods and sensors based on magnetic nanomaterials (Mag-NMs). First, we provided a brief introduction of magnetic nanomaterials, especially their magnetic properties that can be utilized for bioanalytical applications. Second, we discussed the synthesis of these Mag-NMs. Third, we reviewed recent advances in bioanalytical applications of the Mag-NMs in different formats. Finally, recently literature studies on the relevance of Mag-NMs for bioanalysis applications were presented.
