Characterization of Phenacoccus solenopsis (Tinsley) (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) Resistance to Emamectin Benzoate: Cross-Resistance Patterns and Fitness Cost Analysis

Dactylopius opuntiae (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae) as a Diet Source for Mass Rearing Cryptolaemus montrouzieri (Coleoptera: Coccinelidae)

Although natural enemies play an important role in most integrated pest management programs, biological control agents remain poorly adopted in food production systems primarily due to the high costs associated with their implementation. Cryptolaemus montrouzieri (Mulsant, 1853) is a very promising candidate for the biological control of mealybugs. However, mass rearing of this predator is critical to provide sufficient numbers so that effective control of mealybugs can be achieved. Thus, this work focuses on mass rearing of this biological control agent under controlled conditions at T = 28 ± 1 °C, RH = 70 ± 5%, and 12:12-h photoperiod L:D. This experiment was based on feeding this predator three diets: a freeze-dried artificial food source, the cactus cochineal-Dactylopius opuntiae (Cockerell, 1929), and a combination of the two diets. The fecundity recorded in the freeze-dried artificial food, D. opuntiae, and mixed diet was 2.73, 8.79, and 8.78 larvae/female, respectively. The sex ratios (male:female) of the cochineal adults that emerged on the three diets were 1:1.35, 1:1.23, and 1:1.11, respectively, for the freeze-dried artificial food, D. opuntiae, and mixed diet. The emerged adults had an average weight of 9.2 mg when fed the artificial diet, 13.8 mg for the D. opuntiae diet, and 9.5 mg for the mixed diet, while the life cycle duration for each diet was 50.1, 43.5, and 42.3 d, respectively. At the beginning of the C. montrouzieri rearing process with 40 adults, our results indicated that an average of 1031.1 adults can be produced using D. opuntiae as the diet in a volume of 1 m³. The D. opuntiae diet is recommended due to its overall lower costs. Additionally, this study indicates that mass-rearing of C. montrouzieri can be achieved with cheaper and more readily available materials for diets, instead of purchasing a freeze-dried artificial food source.

Fitness Trade-Off Associated With Spinosad Resistance in Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) is an economically important pest of agricultural crops. High resistance has been detected in field populations of F. occidentalis against the insecticide spinosad. In this study, we compared life history traits, body sizes, and feeding behaviors (recorded via an electrical penetration graph) of spinosad-susceptible (Ivf03) and spinosad-resistant (NIL-R) near-isogenic lines of F. occidentalis. Life table analysis showed that NIL-R had reduced female longevity and reduced fecundity. The relative fitness of NIL-R (0.43) was less than half that of Ivf03. NIL-R individuals were smaller than Ivf03 individuals, both in body length and body width at every stage. The number and duration of feeding activities were significantly reduced in NIL-R, with the exception of total duration of long-ingestion probes. These results suggest that there is a fitness trade-off associated with spinosad resistance in F. occidentalis, and that the development of resistance in this pest species may be reduced by rotating spinosad with other pesticides lacking cross-resistance.

Laboratory selection of chlorpyrifos resistance in an Invasive Pest, Phenacoccus solenopsis (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae): Cross-resistance, stability and fitness cost

The cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis is an important polyphagous sucking pest of ornamentals, horticultural and fiber crops worldwide. Some P. solenopsis populations have developed insecticide resistance. This study evaluated cross-resistance, stability of insecticide resistance and life history traits affected by chlorpyrifos resistance in P. solenopsis. After nine generations selected with chlorpyrifos, P. solenopsis exhibited a 539.76-fold resistance level compared to an unselected population (UNSEL Pop). Chlorpyrifos selected population (Chlor-SEL Pop) displayed moderate cross-resistance to profenofos, nitenpyram and high cross-resistance to lambda-cyhalothrin. Biological parameters of P. Solenopsis were affected by chlorpyrifos resistance. The Chlor-SEL Pop had a significant reduction in fitness (relative fitness=0.10), along with significant decreases in pupal weight, fecundity, egg hatching %, intrinsic rate of natural population increase, biotic potential, and mean relative growth rate. It is concluded that selection with chlorpyrifos had marked effect on resistance development in P. solenopsis and upon removal of selection pressure chlorpyrifos resistance declined significantly indicating unstable resistance. Development of resistance led to high fitness costs for the chlorpyrifos-selected strain. These findings should be helpful for better and more successful resistance management of P. solenopsis.
