Frontiers and advances in N-heterocycle compounds as corrosion inhibitors in acid medium: Recent advances

The acid solution is widely used in chemical cleaning, oil well acidifying, and other fields, which also brings the problem of metal corrosion that cannot be underestimated. However, adding an inhibitor is one of the most convenient and effective ways to slow down metal corrosion. N-heterocyclic compounds with high stability and durability, in line with the strategy of sustainable development, have been widely studied in an acidic environment. Imidazole, pyridine, and quinoline compounds, as the most commonly used corrosion inhibitors, can form a compact protective film via π electron cloud shifting towards the N atoms to generate coordination function. In particular, flexible modifiability makes N-heterocyclic compounds adapt to different corrosion environments readily, conducive to the formation of chemical bonds between compounds with metal surfaces to be better adsorption, so as to avoid the blemish of traditional inhibitors (such as inorganic salt and organic amines inhibitors) due to excessive usage, surface roughness of metal or environmental factor (for instance, temperature, pH and metallic) causing loose bonding between film and metal surface. More importantly, the efficient corrosion inhibition and toxicity of N-heterocyclic compounds have close to do with their own functional groups. Combined with the latest research achievement, the effects of different substituents on the corrosion inhibition and corrosion inhibition mechanisms were systematically reviewed in the acid-corrosive solution of imidazole, pyridine, and quinoline and their derivatives in this review article, respectively. In addition, the application and function of density functional theory in predicting the corrosion inhibition effect of corrosion inhibitors are also discussed. The future development trend was prospected according to the summarized research results.

Exploring the Efficacy of Benzimidazolone Derivative as Corrosion Inhibitors for Copper in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl Solution: A Comprehensive Experimental and Theoretical Investigation

This study focuses on the synthesis, theoretical analysis, and application of the corrosion inhibitor known as benzimidazolone, specifically 1-(cyclohex-1-enyl)-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimiazol-2-one (CHBI). The structure of CHBI was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The inhibitory properties of CHBI were investigated in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution on pure copper using various electrochemical techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization curves (PDPs) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), as well as scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), UV-visible spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. The obtained results indicate that CHBI is an excellent inhibitor, exhibiting remarkable effectiveness with an inhibition rate of 86.49% at 10-3 M. To further confirm the extent of adsorption of the inhibitory molecule on the copper surface, density functional theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation studies were conducted. The results of this study demonstrate the synthesis and characterization of CHBI as a corrosion inhibitor. The experimental and theoretical analyses provide valuable insights into the inhibitory performance of CHBI, indicating its strong adsorption on the copper surface.

Essential Oil of Origanum vulgare as a Green Corrosion Inhibitor for Carbon Steel in Acidic Medium

In this study, Oregano (Origanum vulgare) leaf essential oil was studied as an environmental-friendly anticorrosion agent for carbon steel in aggressive hydrochloric acid. The corrosion inhibition of O. vulgare was characterized by surface morphology, electrochemical, weight loss, theoretical and computational methods. It was found that the highest inhibition performance of O. vulgare was 85.64% at 2 g/l in 1 M HCl. The results of Langmuir isotherm and adsorption thermodynamics investigation demonstrated that the O. vulgare inhibitor adsorbed on the metal surface by the formation of rigid covalent bonds. The adsorption and inhibition centers of the selected inhibitor were studied by the computational methods, resulting in that the hydroxyl functional groups and benzoyl rings are mainly responsible for the high inhibition efficiency.

Comparative Study of Corrosion Inhibition Efficacy of Alkaloid Extract of Artemesia vulgaris and Solanum tuberosum in Mild Steel Samples in 1 M Sulphuric Acid

Two different types of alkaloids are successfully extracted from two plants Artemisia vulgaris (AV) and Solanum tuberosum (ST) in the laboratory and used as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel samples. The corrosion inhibition potential of these alkaloids is determined by weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization measurement methods. Based on the weight loss measurement study of a sample immersed for 6 h in 1000 ppm inhibitor solution of AV and ST alkaloids, the corrosion inhibition efficiency is found to be 92.58% and 90.79%, respectively. The potentiodynamic polarization measurement shows 88.06% and 83.22% corrosion inhibition efficiency for AV and ST alkaloids, respectively, for the sample immersed for 1 h in 1000 ppm inhibitor solution. These promising efficiency and suitable immersion time effect can lead to the development of good green inhibitors.

The Use of Synthesized CoO/Co3O4 Nanoparticles as A Corrosion Inhibitor of Low-Carbon Steel in 1 M HCl

CoO/Co₃O₄ nanoparticles (CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs) were synthesized with egg white. The effectiveness of CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs to inhibit the corrosion of carbon steel has verified in acidic medium (1 M HCl). It has been found that Langmuir adsorption isotherm is the dominant adsorption process of CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs on the surface of low-carbon steel. The thermodynamic parameters also demonstrated that the adsorption process of CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs was a physicochemical, spontaneous, and exothermic process. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique and potentiodynamic polarization were applied. The results obtained in this study showed that CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs acted as a mixed inhibitor for the anodic reaction and the cathodic reaction, and the efficiency to inhibit the corrosion was 93% at 80 ppm of the inhibitor. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the effectiveness that was obtained using the inhibitor to protect the surface of low carbon steel. Thus, low-carbon steel can be protected against corrosion in acidic medium using CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs as inhibitors.

Oryza sativa plant extract in 15% hydrochloric acid as a green corrosion inhibitor on the surface of stainless steel 410

Fifteen percent hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions are used for some cleaning processes in the petroleum industry. The use of such a corrosive medium is mainly responsible for the corrosion of the stainless steel (SS-410) vessels and pipings. In this study, the corrosion inhibiting properties of Oryza sativa plant extract (OSPE) from agricultural residues are investigated on SS-410 steel surfaces in a 15% HCl medium. Gravimetric analysis showed a maximum corrosion inhibition of 91.92% with 4 g/L OSPE in 15% HCl solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the adsorption of OSPE on the SS-410 surface. The adsorption of OSPE on SS-410 followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, indicating the formation of a monolayer on the SS-410 surface. The theoretical study confirmed that the anticorrosive effect could be mainly related to the phytochemical 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester. Consequently, the OSPE containing this phytochemical shows an anticorrosive behavior on the SS-410 surface in an acidic 15% HCl solution.

A Review on Plants and Biomass Wastes as Organic Green Corrosion Inhibitors for Mild Steel in Acidic Environment

Acid corrosion is a problem pertaining to corrosion that involves an acid solution. It is important to treat metal to preserve its integrity. Thus, acids are utilized to clean and treat metal surfaces. In return, this may lead to over-etching and metal degradation. Corrosion inhibitors were introduced as a solution for the issue. However, there are some problems associated with the usage of conventional corrosion inhibitors. Traces of nitrites and chromates that are present in the inhibitors may lead to serious health and environmental issues. As a solution, organic green corrosion inhibitors have been studied to replace the conventional corrosion inhibitors. These inhibitor molecules form a protective layer on top of the metal surface to suppress metal dissolution when added to the acid solution. This process prevents direct contact between the metal surfaces and the acid environment. This study explores the usage of natural resources and biomass wastes as the basis for organic green corrosion inhibitors. This study also provides some suggestions for new biomass wastes that can be studied as new organic corrosion inhibitors, and it is aimed at opening the perspective of researchers on exploring new organic inhibitors by using natural resources and biomass wastes.

Experimental, DFT and MD Assessments of Bark Extract of Tamarix aphylla as Corrosion Inhibitor for Carbon Steel Used in Desalination Plants

This study aimed to examine the extract of barks of Tamarix aphylla as a corrosion inhibitor. The methodology briefly includes plant sample collection, extraction of the corrosion inhibitor, gravimetric analysis, plotting potentiodynamic polarization plots, electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurements, optimization of conditions, and preparation of the inhibitor products. The results show that the values of inhibition efficiency (IE%) increased as the concentrations of the inhibitor increased, with a maximum achievable inhibition efficiency of 85.0%. Potentiodynamic polarization (PP) tests revealed that the extract acts as a dual-type inhibitor. The results obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements indicate an increase in polarisation resistance, confirming the inhibitive capacity of the tested inhibitor. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the steel surface follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and involves competitive physio-sorption and chemisorption mechanisms. The EIS technique was utilized to investigate the effect of temperature on corrosion inhibition within the 298–328 K temperature range. Results confirm that the inhibition efficiency (IE%) of the inhibitor decreased slightly as the temperature increased. Lastly, the thermodynamic parameters for the inhibitor were calculated.

Corrosion mitigation performance of disodium EDTA functionalized chitosan biomacromolecule - Experimental and theoretical approach

Disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate salt is known for its excellent coordinating properties with the metal ions. The present study deals with the investigation of the prepared Disodium EDTA functionalized chitosan in corrosion inhibition for mild steel in 1 M HCl. The modified chitosan was characterized by spectral studies, thermal analysis, and Zeta potential studies. The corrosion inhibition efficiency (%) was evaluated using the gravimetric method and electrochemical studies. The electrochemical studies included potentiodynamic polarization, linear polarization resistance, and electrochemical impedance methods. The modified chitosan polymer showed an inhibition efficiency of 96.63% for 500 ppm at 303 K. Adsorption process obeyed Langmuir isotherm. Experimental results and theoretical calculations endorsed initial physisorption followed by a chemisorption process. Surface characterization studies supported the formation of a protective film that enabled the inhibition process. Density functional theory, Monte Carlo studies, and molecular dynamics simulation studies show a good agreement with the experimental results. Two-way Analysis of Variance was performed to test the influence of immersion period and inhibitor concentration on the corrosion rate using the statistical software IBM SPSS 20.0. A quartic model was generated as the best fit with the highest R2 value of 0.973. Design Expert software was employed for statistical modeling fit.

Synthesis, Electrochemical, Thermodynamic, and Quantum Chemical Investigations of Amino Cadalene as a Corrosion Inhibitor for Stainless Steel Type 321 in Sulfuric Acid 1M

The corrosion of stainless steel is one of the major industries’ issues that gained wide interest among researchers. It became necessary to develop and apply eco-friendly approaches to corrosion control. This work explores the inhibitory effect of a newly synthesized amino cadalene (ACM) on the corrosion of stainless steel type 321 in sulfuric acid 1M. Particularly, the experimental study consisting of electrochemical and surface analyses was conducted in conjunction with a theoretical approach. The electrochemical results showed that ACM acted as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor and the inhibition efficiency attained 91% at 10−3M. EIS measurements revealed that both metal charge transfer and diffusion processes are involved in the interfacial metal/solution reactions. The interfacial mechanism is thoroughly investigated; the physisorption of the protonated molecules was preceded by the formation of a negative layer due to adsorption of the solution anionic species. The experimental insights are corroborated with the quantum chemical calculations.

Adsorption and anti-corrosion characteristics of vanillin Schiff bases on mild steel in 1 M HCl: experimental and theoretical study

Herein, two Schiff base derivatives of vanillin and divanillin with 2-picolylamine, namely, 2-methoxy-4-((pyridin-2-ylmethylimino)methyl)phenol (compound A) and 3,3′-dimethoxy-5,5′-bis-((pyridin-2-ylmethylimino)methyl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-2,2′-diol (compound B), respectively, were synthesized. Additionally, their adsorption characteristics and corrosion inhibition behavior were compared for mild steel in 1 M HCl using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization and weight loss methods. Compound B was found to impart a better anti-corrosive effect (around 95% inhibition efficiency at 313 K) than compound A. The inhibitors act as effective mixed-type inhibitors and exhibit Langmuir-type adsorption behaviour. The kinetic–thermodynamic parameters together with the data obtained from density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations illustrate the mechanism of corrosion and mode of adsorption of both inhibitors on the metal surface. The better corrosion mitigation propensity of the dimeric form of the inhibitor (compound B) over the monomeric form (compound A) was tested experimentally and explained according to the theoretical data.
