Abstract
Objective To investigate current status of quality of life and the association between depression and symptom burden in a sample of Chinese maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Methods A self-designed patient general information questionnaire, disease-related information questionnaire, dialysis patient symptom burden scale, depression scale, and quality of survival scale were used to investigate 380 maintenance haemodialysis patients in haemodialysis centres. A regression model of the factors affecting the quality of survival was established using structural equation modelling. Results The regression model data had a high goodness of fit: c2/df = 4.736, RMSEA = 0.099, GFI = 0.918, CFI = 0.972, TLI = 0.962, SRMR = 0.0469. Structural equation model analysis showed that depression had a positive predictive effect on symptom burden, β = 0.398, P < 0.001; Symptom burden had a negative predictive effect on the quality of life, β =-0.851, P < 0.001; and Depression had a negative predictive effect on the quality of life, β =-0.151, P < 0.001. Depression indirectly affects the quality of life through symptom burdens. Conclusion Depression and symptom burden directly or indirectly affect the quality of life in patients with maintenance hemodialysis. Symptom burden moderates the relationship between depression and quality of life as a mediating variable.

Abstract
Background Nutrients are crucial for dialysis patients, especially elderly patients. Nutrition-related complications in dialysis patients are often closely related to cardiovascular aging. However, we know little about the effect of different nutrients on the commonly used outcome predictor, health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Therefore, this study investigated the associations between different nutrients and HRQOL among dialysis patients. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 123 dialysis adults at multiple dialysis centers. The Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36) assesses HRQOL. Modified quantitative subjective global assessment (MQSGA) evaluates nutritional status. A 3-day dietary record evaluated nutrient intakes. Results Among the 123 participants, 79 received hemodialysis (HD), and 44 were on peritoneal dialysis (PD). Patients with PD had a higher SF-36 score than HD (525 ± 136 vs. 375 ± 179, P < 0.001). A negative association between nutrition status and HRQOL was observed in HD (regression coefficient β = -17.4, P < 0.001) but not in PD (β = -12.3, P = 0.07). For HD patients, the nutrition status was negatively correlated with intakes of carbohydrates, fiber, selenium, copper, and Manganese (β = -0.02, P = 0.032; β = -0.3, P = 0.031; β = -0.1, P = 0.006; β = -2.3, P = 0.025; β = -1.3, P = 0.003, respectively). Their HRQOL was positively associated with calories, fat, niacin, and vitamin E (β = 2.19, P = 0.035; β = 2.4, P = 0.043; β = 8.5, P = 0.044; β = 6.9, P = 0.017, respectively). Conversely, for patients with PD, only vitamin B2 was found to be adversely correlated with their nutritional status (β = -5.2, P = 0.037), and increased intakes of vitamin A, vitamin C and fiber (β = 0.1, P = 0.031; β = 0.8, P = 0.028; β = 15.8, P = 0.045, respectively) were associated with a better HRQOL. Conclusions The nutritional intake of PD patients and HD patients affects their quality of life differently. Macronutrients significantly impact HRQOL in HD patients, while vitamins have a more substantial impact on PD patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services introduced an End-Stage Renal Disease Prospective Payment System (PPS) in 2011 to increase the utilization of home dialysis modalities, including peritoneal dialysis (PD). Several studies have shown a significant increase in PD utilization after PPS implementation. However, its impact on patients with kidney allograft failure remains unknown. METHODS We conducted an interrupted time series analysis using data from the US Renal Data System (USRDS) that include all adult kidney transplant recipients with allograft failure who started dialysis between 2005 and 2019. We compared the PD utilization in the pre-PPS period (2005-2010) to the fully implemented post-PPS period (2014-2019) for early (within 90 days) and late (91-365 days) PD experience. RESULTS A total of 27,507 adult recipients with allograft failure started dialysis during the study period. There was no difference in early PD utilization between the pre-PPS and the post-PPS period in either immediate change (0.3% increase; 95% CI: -1.95%, 2.54%; p = 0.79) or rate of change over time (0.28% increase per year; 95% CI: -0.16%, 0.72%; p = 0.18). Subgroup analyses revealed a trend toward higher PD utilization post-PPS in for-profit and large-volume dialysis units. There was a significant increase in PD utilization in the post-PPS period in units with low PD experience in the pre-PPS period. Similar findings were seen for the late PD experience. CONCLUSION PPS did not significantly increase the overall utilization of PD in patients initiating dialysis after allograft failure.

Abstract
Limited data have examined the association between air pollution and the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). We aimed to investigate whether long-term exposure to air pollutants is related to the development of ESRD among patients with T2DM and CKD. A total of 1,738 patients with T2DM and CKD hospitalized in Peking University Third Hospital from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2021 were enrolled in this study. The outcome was defined as the occurrence of ESRD. Data on six air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, CO, NO2, SO2, and O3) from 35 monitoring stations were obtained from the Beijing Municipal Ecological and Environmental Monitoring Center. Long-term exposure to air pollutants during the follow-up period was measured using the ordinary Kriging method. During a mean follow-up of 41 months, 98 patients developed ESRD. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that an increase of 10 μg/m3 in PM2.5 (odds ratio [OR] 1.19, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.03-1.36) and PM10 (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.02-1.30) concentration were positively associated with ESRD. An increase of 1 mg/m3 in CO (2.80, 1.05-7.48) and an increase of 1 μg/m3 in SO2 (1.06, 1.00-1.13) concentration were also positively associated with ESRD. Apart from O3 and NO2, all the above air pollutants have additional predictive value for ESRD in patients with T2DM and CKD. The results of Bayesian kernel machine regression and the weighted quantile sum regression all showed that PM2.5 was the most important air pollutant. Backward stepwise logistic regression showed that PM2.5 was the only pollutant remaining in the prediction model. In patients with T2DM and CKD, long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5, PM10, CO, and SO2 was positively associated with the development of ESRD.

Abstract
Objective To explore the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES), illness perception, social functioning, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of young and middle-aged maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients and the internal mechanism of action. Design A multicenter cross-sectional study. Methods An aggregate of 332 young and middle-aged MHD patients were enrolled from hemodialysis centers in four general hospitals in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, from June to December 2022. The questionnaires used included one for general demographic data, the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ), Social Dysfunction Screening Scale (SDSS), and the 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12). Results Both SES and HRQoL were negatively correlated with illness perception and social functioning, respectively. SES was positively correlated with HRQoL. Illness perception was positively correlated with social functioning. The indirect effects of illness perception and social functioning on the relationship between SES and HRQoL were 0.33 and 0.31, making up 41.06% and 38.91% of the sum. The chain indirect effect of illness perception and social functioning was 0.10, making up 12.59% of the total effect, while gender did not play a moderating role. Conclusion Illness perception and social functioning may independently and accumulatively mediate the association between SES and HRQoL. Nurses should consider developing individual intervention program for young and middle-aged MHD patients with low SES, focusing on establishing targeted counseling and health education strategies corresponding to illness perception and social functioning to help patients improve their HRQoL.

Abstract
Background End-stage-renal-disease is one of the most common chronic diseases, and peritoneal dialysis constitutes one of the replacement therapies. The aim of this study was to investigate the views of patients on peritoneal dialysis regarding their body image, to assess their quality of life and level of emotional intelligence. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed with structured questionnaires. The sample of the study was the patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis and monitored by the nephrology clinics of 7 public hospitals in Greece. Results A total of 102 completed questionnaires were collected and analyzed (68% response rate). The participants showed moderate degree of body-image dysphoria (mean = 1.29, SD = 0.94), moderate levels of emotional intelligence and experienced moderate quality of life. According to the statistical analysis, women reported worse body image (p = 0.013) and university graduates showed higher levels of emotionality (p = 0.016). The correlations between the quality of life questionnaire subscales and demographic characteristics revealed statistically significant relationships between marital status and the Physical Functionality subscale, where unmarried people had a better quality of life in this subscale (p = 0.042) and between postgraduate/doctoral degree holders and the subscale Patient Satisfaction (p = 0.035). Also, statistically significant relationships were found between occupation and the Social Interaction subscale, where those engaged in household activities and were unemployed (p = 0.022) showed better quality of life. Participants living in semi-urban areas had better quality of life on the subscale Burden of Kidney Disease (p = 0.034). Conclusion ESRD patients on peritoneal dialysis suffer significant limitations related to disease and treatment modality. According to our findings, these affect both their body image as well as their quality of life. Improvement in emotional intelligence is the factor which plays an important mediating role in improving both body image and quality of life in patients on peritoneal dialysis.

Abstract
Aims It has been suggested that the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a novel and reliable surrogate marker of insulin resistance (IR). However, its relationship with the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains uncertain. Accordingly, we sought to examine the relationship between the TyG index and ESRD risk in patients with T2DM and CKD. Methods From January 2013 to December 2021, 1,936 patients with T2DM and CKD hospitalized at Peking University Third Hospital (Beijing, China) were enrolled into the study. The formula for calculating the TyG index was ln[fasting triglyceride (mg/dL) × fasting blood glucose (mg/dL)/2]. ESRD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate of less than 15 mL/min/1.73 m2 or the commencement of dialysis or renal transplantation. The relationship between the TyG index and ESRD risk was analyzed using Cox proportional hazard regression. Results 105 (5.42%) participants developed ESRD over a mean follow-up of 41 months. The unadjusted analysis revealed a 1.50-fold (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.17-1.93; P = 0.001) increased risk for ESRD per one unit rise in the TyG index, and the positive association remained stable in the fully adjusted model (hazard ratio, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.12-1.99; P = 0.006). Analysis using restricted cubic spline revealed a significant positive association between the TyG index and ESRD risk. In addition, Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed significant risk stratification with a TyG index cutoff value of 9.5 (P = 0.003). Conclusion In individuals with T2DM and CKD, a significant and positive association was shown between an elevated TyG index and the risk of ESRD. This conclusion provides evidence for the clinical importance of the TyG index for evaluating renal function decline in individuals with T2DM and CKD.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health problem. CKD causes patients to be hospitalized for a longer time to treat the disease. The impact of the hospitalization brings major changes and affects the quality of life (QoL) of the patients. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of hospitalization on the QoL of patients with CKD. A cross-sectional study was conducted at the inpatient departments (IPDs) and outpatient departments (OPDs) of selected hospitals, in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia. The kidney disease quality of life (KDQOL) scale was used for the data collection and the findings were analyzed. The hospitalized patients had a poorer QoL than the OPD patients. The physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) mean scores were 52.82 ± 2.32 and 52.57 ± 2.93 in IPD patients, respectively, and 63.46 ± 3.65 and 66.39 ± 0.91 in OPD patients, respectively, which was significant (p < 0.0001). The QoL of patients decreased in the end stages of CKD. A significant association was observed between gender, occupation, smoking, and the stages of CKD with the QoL of the hospitalized patients. Measures must be taken to improve the QoL of these patients at all levels.

Abstract
The utilization of peritoneal dialysis (PD) has been increasing in the past decade owing to various government initiatives and recognition of benefits such as better preservation of residual renal function, quality of life, and lower cost. The Advancing American Kidney Health initiative aims to increase the utilization of home therapies such as PD and kidney transplantation to treat end stage kidney disease (ESKD). A natural consequence of this development is that more patients will receive PD, and many will eventually undergo kidney transplantation. Therefore, it is important to understand the effect of pretransplant PD on posttransplant outcomes such as delayed graft function (DGF), rejection, thrombosis, graft, and patient survival. Furthermore, some of these patients may develop DGF, which raises the question of the utility of PD during DGF and its risks. Although transplant is the best renal replacement therapy option, it is not everlasting, and many transplant recipients must go on dialysis after allograft failure. Can PD be a good option for these patients? This is another critical question. Furthermore, a significant proportion of nonrenal solid organ transplant recipients develop ESKD. Is PD feasible in this group? In this review, we try to address all of these questions in the light of available evidence.

Background
Hemodialysis is a medical technology implemented for various renal diseases and has a significant budget impact in Japan. Hemodialysis also affects health-related quality of life, as it interferes with daily life, but the effect of diagnosis and duration of hemodialysis is not clear. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of hemodialysis on health-related quality of life, with a focus on diagnosis and duration of hemodialysis.
Methods
We conducted EQ-5D-5L surveys among hemodialysis patients at a single hemodialysis hospital between November 2015 and September 2017 and used a scoring algorithm that was developed in Japan to calculate the scores.
Results
A total of 274 subjects without missing data were included in the data analysis. The mean score of the entire group was 0.772 ± 0.215. Compared with other domains, pain/discomfort had the highest percentage of problems (59.1%). There were no differences in the distributions with respect to diagnostic names in any domain. Multiple regression analysis showed that hemodialysis duration was the only explanatory variable that had a mild significant effect on EQ-5D-5L scores, but it was not large.
Conclusions
QOL measured using the EQ-5D-5L survey score was not affected by age, gender, or diagnosis but was affected by hemodialysis duration. Future studies are needed to investigate the impact of prolonged hemodialysis on health-related quality of life.

Abstract
Background Peritoneal dialysis (PD) can be associated with abnormal cardiac structure and function and increased mortality risk. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the cardiac structure and function dynamic changes using echocardiography during the first 2 years of PD therapy. We also assessed its associations with all-cause mortality risk after 2 years of follow-up. Methods End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients that have started PD from 2011 to 2017, and had echocardiography at baseline and years 1 and 2, were included in this study. Echocardiographic parameters were compared between baseline and year 2. Multivariable Cox models were used to estimate the association between echocardiographic parameters changes and all-cause mortality risk. Results We finally enrolled 72 PD patients in this study. The mean right ventricular diameter (RVD) increased from baseline (18.31 mm) to year 1 (18.75 mm) and year 2 (19.65 mm). We also observed a significant decrease in cardiac output (CO) between baseline and year 2. Additionally, a slight decrease trend in ejection fraction (EF) was observed. Finally, every 1 % increase in RVD was associated with a 68.2 % higher mortality risk after dialysis (HR, 1.682; 95 % CI, 1.017–2.783). Conclusions Our results demonstrated a susceptibility for deteriorated right cardiac structure and function during the first 2 years of PD treatment. Also, higher all-cause mortality risk was observed after 2 years of PD. Altogether, these results highlighted the need for additional focus on regular echocardiographic examinations during long-term PD management. Abstract
We examined factors associated with healthcare cost, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and kidney disease quality of life (KDQOL) in hemodialysis patients. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 160 patients from January to April 2019 at a hemodialysis center. Socio-demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters and quality of life (QOL) (using KDQOL-SF-v1.3) were assessed. Monthly healthcare costs were extracted from the hospital information system. The means of healthcare cost, HRQOL, and KDQOL were VND 9.4 ± 1.6 million, VND 45.1 ± 21.9 and VND 51.3 ± 13.0, respectively. In the multivariate analysis, the healthcare cost was higher in patients with a longer hemodialysis vintage (regression coefficient (B): 0.74; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.25; 1.23), comorbidity (B: 0.77; 95% CI: 0.24; 1.31); and lower in those with a higher hematocrit concentration (B: −0.07; 95% CI: −0.13; −0.01). Patients that lived in urban areas (B: 9.08; 95% CI: 2.30; 15.85) had a better HRQOL; those with a comorbidity (B: −14.20; 95% CI: −21.43; −6.97), and with hypoalbuminemia (B: −9.31; 95% CI: −16.58; −2.04) had a poorer HRQOL. Patients with a higher level of education (B: 5.38~6.29) had a better KDQOL; those with a comorbidity had a poorer KDQOL (B: −6.17; 95% CI: −10.49; −1.85). In conclusion, a longer hemodialysis vintage, a comorbidity and a lower hematocrit concentration were associated with higher healthcare costs. Patients who lived in urban areas had a better HRQOL and a higher level of education led to a better KDQOL. Patients with a comorbidity had a lower HRQOL and KDQOL. Malnourished patients had a lower HRQOL.

Abstract
PURPOSE Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects over 10% of the global population. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been identified as a reliable indicator for assessing the effectiveness of treatment in chronic patients, and resilience as a predictor of low levels of stress and higher QoL. The aim of this research is to identify the relationship between HRQoL, resilience, perceived stress, and the different sociodemographic and clinical routine variables of advanced chronic kidney disease (ACKD). METHODS Multicenter, cross-sectional, and correlational study with 155 ACKD patients in the Valencian Community (Spain). The measures for the study included the Kidney Disease Quality of Life 36 (KDQOL-36), the Perceived Stress Scale 10 (PSS10), and the Connors-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). To identify the variables with predictive power over the scales and subscales of the KDQOL-36, multiple regression analyses were performed. RESULTS Average participants' age was 67.39, 68.4% were male, 29% diabetic, and 83.2% had undergone arteriovenous vascular access placement with a Charlson Comorbidity Index of 6 (SD = 2.09). The regression models identified that age and resilience explained up to 26.8% of the variance of the KDQOL-36 total score. As for the physical component of QoL, comorbidity with other clinical conditions, resilience, and the presence of diabetes explained 32.1% of its variance. CONCLUSIONS Resilience was identified as one of the most important predictors of HRQoL. Thus, the development of interventions aiming to improve the level of resilience may have a positive impact over the quality of life of patients with CKD.

Abstract
RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE Dialysis patients judge health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as an essential outcome. Remarkably, little is known about HRQoL differences between home dialysis and in-center hemodialysis (HD) patients worldwide. STUDY DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. SETTING & STUDY POPULATIONS Search strategies were performed on the Cochrane Library, Pubmed, and EMBASE databases between 2007 and 2019. Home dialysis was defined as both peritoneal dialysis and home HD. SELECTION CRITERIA FOR STUDIES Randomized controlled trials and observational studies that compared HRQoL in home dialysis patients versus in-center HD patients. DATA EXTRACTION The data extracted by 2 authors included HRQoL scores of different questionnaires, dialysis modality, and subcontinent. ANALYTICAL APPROACH Data were pooled using a random-effects model and results were expressed as standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% CIs. Heterogeneity was explored using subgroup analyses. RESULTS Forty-six articles reporting on 41 study populations were identified. Most studies were cross-sectional in design (90%), conducted on peritoneal dialysis patients (95%), and used the 12-item or 36-item Short-Form Health Survey questionnaires (83%). More than half the studies showed moderate or high risk of bias. Pooled analysis of 4,158 home dialysis patients and 7,854 in-center HD patients showed marginally better physical HRQoL scores in home dialysis patients compared with in-center HD patients (SMD, 0.14; 95% CI, 0.04 to 0.24), although heterogeneity was high (I 2>80%). In a subgroup analysis, Western European home dialysis patients had higher physical HRQoL scores (SMD, 0.39; 95% CI, 0.17 to 0.61), while home dialysis patients from Latin America had lower physical scores (SMD, -0.20; 95% CI, -0.28 to -0.12). Mental HRQoL showed no difference in all analyses. LIMITATIONS No randomized controlled trials were found and high heterogeneity among studies existed. CONCLUSIONS Although pooled data showed marginally better physical HRQoL for home dialysis patients, the quality of design of the included studies was poor. Large prospective studies with adequate adjustments for confounders are necessary to establish whether home dialysis results in better HRQoL. TRIAL REGISTRATION PROSPERO 95985.

Abstract
Background More than 6200 End Stage Renal Disease patients in the Netherlands are dependent on dialysis, either performed at home or in a dialysis centre. Visiting a dialysis centre three times a week is considered a large burden by many patients. However, recent data regarding the effects of dialysis at home on quality of life, clinical outcomes, and costs compared with in-centre haemodialysis are lacking. Methods The Dutch nOcturnal and hoME dialysis Study To Improve Clinical Outcomes (DOMESTICO) is a nationwide, prospective, observational cohort study that will include adult patients starting with a form of dialysis. Health-related quality of life, as the primary outcome, clinical outcomes and costs, as secondary outcomes, will be measured every 3–6 months in patients on home dialysis, and compared with a control group consisting of in-centre haemodialysis patients. During a 3-year period 800 home dialysis patients (600 peritoneal dialysis and 200 home haemodialysis patients) and a comparison group of 800 in-centre haemodialysis patients will be included from 53 Dutch dialysis centres (covering 96% of Dutch centres) and 1 Belgian dialysis centre (covering 4% of Flemish centres). Discussion DOMESTICO will prospectively investigate the effect of home dialysis therapies on health-related quality of life, clinical outcomes and costs, in comparison with in-centre haemodialysis. The findings of this study are expected to ameliorate the shared decision-making process and give more guidance to healthcare professionals, in particular to assess which type of patients may benefit most from home dialysis. Trial registration The DOMESTICO study is registered with the National Trial Register on (number: NL6519, date of registration: 22 August 2017) and the Central Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects (CCMO) (number: NL63277.029.17). Abstract
Introducción: La enfermedad renal crónica es una enfermedad en crecimiento y un reto para los países desarrollados ya que produce un importante impacto en la calidad de vida de los pacientes, alterando las actividades cotidianas y provocando cambios en los aspectos físicos, emocionales y sociales.
Objetivos: Evaluar la calidad de vida percibida por los pacientes con enfermedad renal crónica sometidos a tratamiento renal sustitutivo con hemodiálisis o con diálisis peritoneal, y en qué medida son influenciados por los parámetros analíticos y socioclínicos.
Material y Método: Estudio transversal en un grupo de pacientes con enfermedad renal crónica en tratamiento con diálisis peritoneal y hemodiálisis, mediante la cumplimentación del cuestionario de Calidad de Vida en las Enfermedades Renales KDQOL-SF 36. Además se añadieron una serie de variables socioclínicas y parámetros de laboratorio para analizar su posible influencia en la calidad de vida. El análisis estadístico fue realizado con el software estadístico SPSS versión 22.0 para Windows.
Resultados: En nuestra muestra observamos que los dominios de la calidad de vida peor valorados por los pacientes son la salud general, estrés por la enfermedad y rol físico; en cambio, los mejor valorados son el dolor corporal y la salud mental. También se halló mayor repercusión sobre algunos dominios de la calidad de vida si el paciente está en tratamiento con hemodiálisis, si dispone de fístula arteriovenosa como acceso, y cuanto más tiempo lleve en tratamiento renal sustitutivo, e incluso, si están alterados ciertos parámetros analíticos como el Ky/V, urea, potasio o hemoglobina.
Conclusiones: El tratamiento renal sustitutivo con hemodiálisis o diálisis peritoneal genera un impacto enorme en la calidad de vida percibida por el paciente y se debe prestar especial atención a la idoneidad de la técnica elegida en cada momento, a la adecuación del acceso para diálisis, sin descuidar a los pacientes “veteranos” por el hecho de llevar mucho tiempo en tratamiento.

BACKGROUND Health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) is reduced with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) but little is known about the impact of sleep disorders, dialysis modality and demographic factors on HR-QOL of Mexican patients with ESRD. METHODS 121 adults with ESRD were enrolled from 4 dialysis units in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, stratified by unit and dialysis modality (hemodialysis [HD], continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis [CAPD] and automated peritoneal dialysis [APD]). Analysis included clinical information and data from the Sleep Heart Health Study Sleep Habits Questionnaire, the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) short form (SF-36) HR-QOL measure and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. RESULTS Overall, sleep symptoms and disorders were common (e.g., 37.2% insomnia). SF-36 scores were worse versus US and Mexican norms. HD patients reported better, while CAPD patients poorer HR-QOL for Vitality. With multivariate modelling dialysis modality, sleep disorders as a group and lower income were significantly associated with poorer overall SF-36 and mental health HR-QOL. Overall and Mental Composite Summary models showed HR-QOL was significantly better for both APD and HD with small to moderate effect sizes. Cost-effectiveness analysis demonstrated an advantage for APD. CONCLUSIONS Mexican ESRD patients have reduced HR-QOL, and sleep disorders may be an important driver of this finding. APD should be the preferred mode of dialysis in Mexico.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) in Singapore. METHODS The data used in this study were from two cross-sectional surveys of ESRD patients. HRQOL was assessed using the Kidney Disease Quality of Life (KDQOL) instrument. Socio-demographic characteristics and clinical data were collected. The physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scores, kidney disease component summary (KDCS) score and its three scales (symptoms, effects, burden), and one health utility score [EuroQol 5-dimension (EQ-5D)] were calculated and compared between CAPD and APD using multivariate linear regression. RESULTS In total, 266 patients were included, with 145 on CAPD (mean age 60.8 years) and 121 on APD (mean age 57.4 years). After adjustment for all variables collected, APD patients had significant higher scores in PCS and KDQOL symptoms than CAPD patients, suggesting that APD was associated with better physical health and milder dialysis-related symptoms. CONCLUSION The HRQOL of CAPD and APD patients was largely equivalent in Singapore, but APD patients seemed to experience better physical health and be less bothered by dialysis-related symptoms.
