The impact of Verbal Behavior on the scholarly literature from 2005 to 2016

Explaining First Language Acquisition in Terms of Basic Behavioral Processes: Introduction to the Special Section

This special section of Perspectives on Behavior Science follows up on a virtual panel discussion on the role of operant and Pavlovian processes in children's language learning. We present four articles, including two contributed by panelists, that illustrate the explanatory power of operant conditioning processes in the study of language.

Stimulus Clarity and the Emission of Descriptive Autoclitics

The autoclitic is among the least studied and most complex verbal operant named and described by Skinner. The descriptive autoclitic is one subtype, which among other functions can describe the strength of the response. If the clarity of the stimulus is one source of response strength for tacts, manipulating stimulus clarity should evoke different frequencies of descriptive autoclitics. In an experiment with adults, digitally distorting pictures of common objects predicted the relative frequency of descriptive autoclitics that accompanied tacts. The most distorted images evoked twice as many autoclitics as moderately distorted images, and low-distortion images evoked no autoclitics. We encourage other researchers to interpret Skinner's conceptualization of the autoclitic and its various forms and test them empirically to evaluate how their functional definitions can be clarified, refined, or altered.

Evaluating Professional Behavior Analysts’ Literature Searches

The first section of the new Behavior Analyst Certification Board’s Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts (BACB, 2020) includes the expectation that behavior analysts will maintain competence by reading relevant literature. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate to what extent professional behavior analysts search for and access the behavior analytic literature. A survey invitation was sent through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and social media outlets at the end of 2020; 180 professionals responded. Roughly 80% of participants searched for research at least once per month. The top three online resources used were academic web search (72.7%), a university library subscription (65.6%), and the BACB research resource (65.6%). Forty-five percent of all participants indicated satisfaction with the research resources available to them. A series of independent samples t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were conducted to determine group differences. Participants with doctorates searched more frequently and reported higher satisfaction and confidence across all tested domains. Participants using a university library reported more frequent literature searches, a higher skill level in conducting searches, more confidence in their ability to conduct a meaningful literature search, more satisfaction with the research resources available to them, and were more likely to report that the identified research would inform their practice.

Derived Relational Responding and Transformations of Function in Children: A Review of Applied Behavior-Analytic Journals

Theoretical extensions of Skinner's verbal behavior that emphasize derived relational responding (stimulus equivalence, relational frame theory, and bidirectional naming) can improve the complexity and scope of applied behavior-analytic training models with children. We evaluated the prevalence and content of empirical research on derived relational responding in children within 8 major applied behavior-analytic journals. We identified 123 empirical articles that met all inclusion criteria (i.e., they demonstrated derived relational responding in children). Whereas prior citation analyses have shown higher rates of research with adult participants, considerable research within these journals has involved child participants. In addition, 55% of the research targeted socially relevant or culturally established verbal relations, rather than culturally arbitrary relations (e.g., unknown symbols, consonant-vowel-consonant combinations) that are unlikely to affect real-world behavior. Generalization and transformation tests were also present in 47% of articles. We also conducted a content analysis of all articles that contained culturally relevant relations and demonstrated generalization or transformation of stimulus function (21% of all articles, N = 26); we argue that studies that meet these criteria are likely to be the most immediately impactful for learners. Results suggest that future research is needed to evaluate relational frames other than coordination (e.g., distinction, opposition), as well as to extend considerably the complexity of target relational classes and transformations of stimulus function with children.

Citation Analysis of The Analysis of Verbal Behavior (2008-2018)

Recent articles by the editorial board of The Analysis of Verbal Behavior (TAVB) include calls for greater integration, collaboration, and inclusion. In so doing, it may be helpful to consider TAVB's current reach. Previously, Petursdottir, Peterson, and Peters (The Analysis of Verbal Behavior, 25, 109-121, 2009) described the number of citations of articles published in TAVB from 1983 to 2007. The authors found that the greatest number of references to TAVB were self-citations, followed predominantly by other behavior-analytic outlets, such as the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. Here, we replicate and extend the work of Petursdottir et al. (The Analysis of Verbal Behavior, 25, 109-121, 2009) by conducting a citation analysis of references included in TAVB publications from 2008 to 2018 and also report citations by these venues to TAVB. This citation analysis allows for a more recent review of those outlets that articles published in TAVB commonly reference and those that cite TAVB. Generally, self-citations predominated, with articles published in TAVB commonly referencing books and chapters. The implications of these practices on the impact of TAVB and suggestions for moving forward are considered.

The Future of Verbal Behavior: Integration

The future of verbal behavior research is integration. Different perspectives and research areas with their respective sets of jargon exist, which could lead one to believe in competing perspectives. However, a close inspection of various areas suggests overlap between those areas. Integrating research from across differing perspectives could result in a comprehensive understanding of verbal behavior.
