Recent research on response disequilibrium theory: A concise review

A resurgence in research on response disequilibrium theory has prompted a concise review of the literature from the past 5 years. Response disequilibrium, also known as response deprivation, attributes reinforcement and punishment effects to constraints on free-operant baseline levels of behavior. By describing clinically relevant behaviors in terms of instrumental and contingent activities, researchers and practitioners can predict intervention outcomes with a disequilibrium model. We summarize the empirical outcomes of disequilibrium-informed interventions across six articles and discuss areas of future research.

The effects of response disequilibrium on social media use: A laboratory analogue

Response disequilibrium is the perturbation of unconstrained behavior with a contingency. For example, the imposition of advertisements before or after viewing TikTok videos. The purpose of this laboratory analogue was to determine the effects of two such response disequilibrium conditions: (1) which required participants to view 5 s increments of advertisements to access 2 s increments of TikTok videos and (2) which required participants to view 5 s increments of TikTok videos to access 15 s increments of advertisements. The disequilibrium condition in (1) is called a response deficit due to the restricted access to TikTok videos relative to baseline while (2) is called a response excess due to the overabundance of advertisements relative to baseline. Additionally, participants had access to a third activity that was freely available throughout. Participants could browse images of TikTok video thumbnails while in deficit and excess. As predicted, participants increased their viewing of advertisements when TikTok was in deficit and decreased their viewing of TikTok when advertisements were in excess. Furthermore, some participants substituted TikTok with browsing during the excess of advertisements. This investigation has implications for a behavioral economic analysis of social media use and the contingency management of time spent on these platforms.

Modeling Behavioral Persistence with Resurgence as Choice in Context (RaC2): A Tutorial

Resurgence as Choice in Context (RaC2) is a quantitative model for evaluating the reemergence of a previously extinguished response when alternative reinforcement is worsened. Rooted in the matching law, RaC2 proposes that allocation between target and alternative responding is based on changes in the relative value of each response option over time, accounting for periods with and without alternative reinforcement. Given that practitioners and applied researchers may have limited experience with constructing quantitative models, we provide a step-by-step task analysis for building RaC2 using Microsoft Excel 2013. We also provide a few basic learning activities to help readers better understand RaC2 itself, the variables that affect the model's predictions, and the clinical implications of those predictions.

Applications of the Premack Principle: A Review of the Literature

The Premack principle states that any Response A can reinforce any other Response B if the independent rate of A is greater than the independent rate of B. This theory demonstrates reinforcer relativity, where the relative probabilities of responses can be more impactful than preference. Applying the Premack principle involves arranging the environment to restrict access to certain responses based on relative probabilities of a set of given responses. Though the Premack principle is described in modern behavior analytic texts, Konarski et al. identified a lack of empirical evidence to support its application. The purpose of the current paper is to systematically review the extant literature using the Premack principle and evaluate how and if researchers have applied reinforcer relativity as described by Premack and the subsequent effectiveness of these procedures. Additionally, we make recommendations for practitioners and future researchers based on our findings.

An Empirical Evaluation of the Disequilibrium Model to Increase Independent Seatwork for an Individual Diagnosed with Autism

This brief practice is an evaluation of work output predicted by Timberlake's (1980) disequilibrium model. Jacobs, Morford, King, and Hayes (2017) provided a downloadable, online tool using the disequilibrium model to assist practitioners in maximizing intervention outcomes. The disequilibrium model was used to predict the duration of independent seatwork for Marvin, a 17-year-old boy diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The disequilibrium model effectively predicted a work duration that Marvin was compliant with throughout the study. Practitioners should consider using the disequilibrium tool to select intervention parameters.
