Abstract
Ancient schwannoma is a rare benign variant of schwannoma with marked degenerative changes, often mimicking malignancies, particularly when retroperitoneal and pararenal. A 34-year-old woman presented with a rapidly growing 15 cm retroperitoneal pararenal mass. Imaging suggested an aggressive malignancy. Surgical resection and histopathology revealed a well-encapsulated tumor with degenerative changes, nuclear atypia, and strong S100 positivity, confirming ancient schwannoma. Complete excision achieved negative margins, and follow-up showed no recurrence. Diagnostic challenges arise from its rarity and atypical features. Histopathology is crucial for differentiation from malignancies. Ancient schwannomas should be considered for large retroperitoneal masses to ensure accurate diagnosis and management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND "Spinal ganglioneuroma" is a rare entity of neuroblastic tumors, frequent among children, that has been sparsely reported in articles involving both the pediatric and adult populations. These tumors mostly arise from the sympathetic ganglia located in the paravertebral region, near the intervertebral foramina of the spine. This makes their extension into the spinal canal possible but quite rare, in a dumbbell fashion, producing radicular or medullary symptoms. We provide an extensive review of the pediatric cases found in the literature; while reporting a challenging case we have recently got to treat at the CHRU de Brabois in Nancy, France. METHODS We searched PubMed's database for articles and abstracts related to "spinal ganglioneuromas," from inception until June 1, 2024. We combined every case among patients under 18 years of age and divided them between the different spinal areas. We excluded those that originated from outside of the spine. We particularly focused our attention on the thoraco-lumbar region, which involved our case report, since the surgical management is completely different from other regions of the spine. RESULTS As per June 1, 2024, 21 patients aged between 3 and 17 years were identified with "spinal ganglioneuromas," with a predominance of females (81%). The thoracic region of the spine seems to be the area of predilection for these tumors (42.85%), although some have been found in the cervical (9.5%), cervico-thoracic (4.76%), thoraco-lumbar (19.04%), lumbar (19.04%), and sacral (4.76%) regions. DISCUSSION Our specific case included long-date abdominal pain and recent progressive paraparesis as the main symptoms, with radiological manifestations of renal atrophy and hydronephrosis, due to the compression and complete displacement of the kidney, as well as scoliosis. To our knowledge, this combination of symptoms has never been seen with spinal ganglioneuromas before in the pediatric population, given the gigantic size of the tumor, and its significant extension to both the spinal canal and the retroperitoneal space, which is quite uncommon. CONCLUSION Spinal ganglioneuromas are very rare, benign lesions, that should be included in the differential diagnosis of dumbbell tumors that can cause in the pediatric population, alongside neurological symptoms in the limbs and back pain, thoracic, abdominal, and even urinary symptoms.

Abstract
Ganglioneuroma is a well-differentiated tumor originating from neural crest cells of the sympathetic nervous system. Although benign, a few cases have been reported that ganglioneuroma can metastasize to other sites. We report a case of adrenal ganglioneuroma with para-aortic nodal metastases with low FDG and MIBG uptake. In order to avoid unnecessary wide excision or aggressive medication, it is important to consider the possibility of ganglioneuroma preoperatively even if with metastases.

Abstract
Introduction: Ganglioneuroma (GN) is a rare, benign tumor of the autonomic nervous system. It is seldom located in the head and neck (HN) region. GN typically presents as a slow-growing, painless mass, often leading to delayed diagnosis. Case report: We report a unique case of laryngeal-originating GN in a 43-year-old female who presented with worsening dysphonia and dyspnea. Imaging revealed a large mass originating from the larynx. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis. The tumor was surgically excised with preservation of key structures in the neck. At the follow-up, the patient experienced a significant improvement in symptoms. Material and methods: A systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted in January 2024 to investigate the common sites of GN in the HN region and the complications associated with its treatment. Results: In a total of 58 articles, we studied 65 patients, mostly under 30 years old. Surgical excision remains the primary treatment, and post-operative complications were mostly neurological. Discussion: GNs are generally slow-growing and asymptomatic, but they can reveal themselves when compressing nearby structures, especially in the HN region. In symptomatic cases or when the tumor exhibits significant growth or hormonal activity, surgical resection is required. The lateral cervical approach is the most common one. The risk of postoperative complications and recurrence underscores the need for careful surgical planning and long-term follow-up. Conclusion: This unique laryngeal GN case highlights the importance of considering GN in the differential diagnosis of HN masses. Further large-scale studies are warranted to establish evidence-based protocols for their management, especially in the HN region.

Abstract
This report presents the case of a 62-year-old male with an incidentally discovered adrenal mass, ultimately diagnosed as a ganglioneuroma after laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Imaging findings, of a 9 cm lobulated mass with heterogeneous enhancement on MRI, were unspecific and malignancy could not be excluded. Histological examination of the specimen revealed a well-demarcated tumor composed of Schwann cells and ganglion cells, confirming the diagnosis. Postoperative follow-up showed no recurrence. This case highlights the critical role of histopathological evaluation for definitive diagnosis, as imaging alone may be insufficient to distinguish adrenal ganglioneuroma from other potential malignancies due to its nonspecific radiological features.

Abstract
Background Ganglioneuroma (GN) is a rare, benign tumor that originates from neural crest cells and can potentially affect any anatomical site within the sympathetic nervous system. Typically, GNs are more frequently reported in children and young adults, with a slightly higher prevalence in females. We are reporting a rare case of a giant lumbar spine ganglioneuroma by outlining the clinical presentation, radiological finding, management, and outcome. Case Description. A 37-year-old female presented with low back pain radiating to the right lower limb for few years. Neurological examination revealed bilateral lower limb hyperreflexia (+3). Lumbar spine CT and MRI revealed a right paravertebral soft tissue lesion with heterogeneous signal intensity and enhancement at L1 to L3. The patient underwent complete resection of the lesion via a retroperitoneal approach. The surgery was uneventful. The histopathological sections were suggestive of mature ganglioneuroma. She was discharged in stable condition with follow-up at neurosurgery clinic. Conclusion Giant ganglioneuromas are rare, benign tumors of sympathetic neurons. Complete surgical resection is the most effective therapeutic option for ganglioneuroma to avoid recurrence. Given the benign nature of ganglioneuroma, chemotherapy and radiotherapy tend to have a limited role following surgical resection.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE Ganglioneuromas are extremely rare, slow-growing, benign tumors that arising from Schwann cells, ganglion cells, and neuronal or fibrous tissue. Their malignant degeneration occurs very rarely, complete surgical removal is recommended to eliminate possible symptoms or to prevent possible malignant transformation. Reviewing the literature, there is currently insufficient data available on laparoscopic resection of retroperitoneal ganglioneuromas. CASE PRESENTATION 20-year-old young woman with no previous medical history or regular medication use complaints of abdominal pain. Abdominal CT scan found a cystic mass measuring up to 50 mm in diameter with a thick fluid density and no contrast accumulation, was identified in the porta hepatis region extrahepatically. Ultrasound-guided biopsy was performed, histopathological finding revealed mature benign neurogenic tumor tissue consisting of mature ganglion cells, mature Schwann cells, and branching stroma. CLINICAL DISCUSSION A laparoscopic surgery was performed, the 5 cm large tumor was excised from the hepatoduodenal ligament. The tumor was removed from the region of the inferior caval vein, portal vein, and the common and proper hepatic arteries. Final histological diagnosis is ganglioneuroma of the hepatoduodenal ligament. After uneventful postoperative period, the patient was discharged home on the 6th day. CONCLUSIONS Retroperitoneal tumors were previously excised during laparotomy. However, in recent decades, with the development of laparoscopic surgical techniques and tools, laparoscopic removal of some retroperitoneal tumors seems to be the ideal approach. The use of laparoscopy improves visibility of the relationship of the tumor to the surrounding, often vital, structures. Based on a review of the international literature and our own experience, laparoscopic ganglioneuroma resection is the recommended procedure with careful patient selection, as well as appropriate preoperative imaging and diagnostics, and with adequate expertise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ganglioneuroma is a benign and well-differentiated tumor derived from neural crest cells, which occurs infrequently, with most patients being female and adolescents. While predilection sites are the posterior mediastinum and retroperitoneal cavity, ganglioneuroma originating from the dorsal root ganglion is very rare. Here the authors report a case with C2 dorsal root ganglion-derived ganglioneuroma with some literature review. OBSERVATIONS A 45-year-old male patient complained of persistent right-side throbbing occipital headache for more than a year. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical spine revealed a dumbbell-shaped intradural extramedullary tumor from the C2 posterior surface of the odontoid to right C1-2 intervertebral foramen with high T2- and low T1-weighted signal intensities. The tumor displayed homogeneous contrast enhancement by MRI. The authors suspected schwannoma and performed a tumorectomy for both diagnosis and treatment purposes. Intraoperative findings showed that the tumor originated from the dorsal root ganglion, and pathological examination revealed ganglioneuroma. Immediately after the tumorectomy, the throbbing occipital headache disappeared and the patient was discharged from the hospital without major complications. LESSONS Although ganglioneuroma derived from the dorsal root ganglion is very rare, a differential diagnosis of the ganglioneuroma should be made, when schwannoma is suspected.

Background data
Ganglioneuroma is rare in children and often incidentally discovered. The transperitoneal laparoscopic approach is the surgical choice for most of the surgeons because of the familiar anatomy and the wider working spaces. However, a posterior retroperitoneal approach started to be used in pediatric population demonstrating to be safe and effective.
Case presentation
We present a case of a child with radiological finding of a right adrenal mass. Due to the increased risk of having a malignant transformation, a surgical resection was decided using a retroperitoneal approach. The adrenal mass was recognized and completely enucleated. The histopathological examination revealed a GN. Clinical course was uneventful with hospital discharge after 3 days. The outcome was evaluated by ultrasound examination performed 3–6 to 12–24 months and then annually. After 24 months, the patient is completely asymptomatic, and no adrenal masses in both sides have been detected.
Conclusions
The posterior retroperitoneoscopy permits a more direct exposure of the adrenal gland, without violating the peritoneum, and a close vision to the main vessels. We believe that this technique is a valid option for pediatric patients with small adrenal lesions.

Abstract
Neurogenic tumors arise from cells of the nervous system. These tumors can be found anywhere along the distribution of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and are categorized based on cell of origin: ganglion cell, paraganglion cell, and nerve sheath cells. Ganglion cell-derived tumors include neuroblastomas, ganglioneuroblastomas, and ganglioneuromas. Paraganglion cell-derived tumors include paragangliomas and pheochromocytomas. Nerve sheath cell-derived tumors include schwannomas (neurilemmomas), neurofibromas, and neurofibromatosis. Most of these are benign; however, they can cause local compressive symptoms. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment, if clinically indicated. Nonetheless, a thorough preoperative workup is essential, especially for catecholamine-secreting tumors.

Abstract
Ganglioneuroma, a rare neural crest-derived tumor, exhibits a benign profile in contrast to other neuroblastic tumors (neuroblastoma/ganglioneuroblastoma). Ganglioneuromas can be found anywhere autonomic ganglia are located, mostly abdominal/pelvic sites followed by the adrenal glands (one-third of cases), mediastinum/thorax and cervical area. Affecting especially children more than 10 years of age, Ganglioneuroma is either asymptomatic or may cause local compressive effects; rarely inducing nonspecific abdominal complains or arterial hypertension related to oversecretion of epinephrine/norepinephrine/dopamine. Despite a good prognosis, adrenalectomy is necessary in order to rule out a malignancy. Open procedure represents the standard therapeutic option; alternatively, centers with large laparoscopic pediatric experience and good stratification protocols have reported successful procedures. High uptake of I123-MIBG is associated with a more severe outcome in cases with increased mitotic index. In neuroblastic tumors, neuron-specific enolase >33 ng/ml, age at diagnosis <49 months, and blood vessel invasion indicate a poor prognosis. Concurrent extra-adrenal/adrenal ganglioneuroma is associated with a more severe prognosis; post-surgical complications are more frequent in non-adrenal vs. adrenal ganglioneuroma. Exceptionally, immune-mediated paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes have been reported: anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis and opsoclonus-myoclonus-ataxia syndrome. ROHHAD syndrome is the underlying cause in 40-56% of cases of neuroendocrine tumors including ganglioneuroma; 70% of tumors are diagnosed within the first 24 months after hypothalamic obesity onset, associated with a severe prognosis due to hypoventilation, sleep apnea, and dysautonomia. Recently, the PKB/AKT/mTOR/S6 pathway was identified as a tumorigenic pathway in pediatric ganglioneuroma, not in neuroblastoma; mTOR inhibitors are a potential option for pre-operatory tumor shrinkage. Pediatric adrenal ganglioneuroma has a good prognosis if adequately treated; its recognition requires adrenalectomy. Further development of specific biomarkers is needed. In the present article, we aimed to introduce a review of the literature involving adrenal ganglioneuroma based on a practical, multidisciplinary perspective of prognostic factors.

Abstract
Purpose We reviewed the experience with adrenal ganglioneuroma (AGN) pathologically confirmed following adrenalectomy in medium- to high-volume medical centers. Methods The medical records of all adrenalectomy cases in 4 medical centers between 2006 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed for demographics, clinical, radiological and laboratory findings, surgical treatment, pathology results, and outcomes. Results Twenty-five out of 875 adrenalectomy cases (2.9%) were pathologically confirmed as AGN. Those patients' average age was 40.5 years (range, 4-76 years), 13 (52.0%) were males, and 18 lesions (72.0%) were right-sided. One patient had a family history of neurofibromatosis, and another had a succinate dehydrogenase gene mutation. Abdominal/back pain attributed to mass effect was the most common symptom. All 25 patients underwent abdominal computerized tomography scanning in which the average maximal tumor diameter was 6.61 cm. The mean pre- and postcontrast Hounsfield units (HU) values were 35.2 and 59, respectively; and the mean late-phase HU value was 71.1. Twenty-two patients (88.0%) underwent minimally invasive surgery. The average tumor diameter recorded in the final pathology report was 7 cm. Isolated AGN was diagnosed in 21 cases (84.0%), and the additional components reported for the remaining 4 cases included pheochromocytoma (2), ganglioneuroblastoma (1), and neurofibroma (1). The average follow-up length was 16.8 months (range, 1-136 months), during which there was no recurrence or death. Conclusion AGN is a rare, slow-growing, large benign tumor with radiological characteristics similar to those seen in malignant tumor. Final diagnosis is established by pathology after surgical resection, preferably minimally invasive, with an overall excellent prognosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the presentation and outcomes of patients with adrenal ganglioneuromas (AGNs). DESIGN Single-centre retrospective cohort study (1 January 1995 to 31 December 2019) and systematic review of literature (1 January 1980 to 19 November 2019). PATIENTS Diagnosed with histologically confirmed AGN. MEASUREMENTS Baseline clinical, imaging and biochemical characteristics, recurrence rates and mortality. Subgroup analysis was performed on tumours with histologic elements of ganglioneuroma and pheochromocytoma (ie composite tumours). RESULTS The cohort study included 45 patients with AGN, 20 (44%) of which had composite tumours. Compared to pure AGN, patients with composite tumour were older (median age, 62.5 vs. 35 years, p < .001), had smaller tumours (median size, 3.9 vs. 5.7 cm, p = .016) and were discovered incidentally less frequently (65% vs. 84%, p = .009). No recurrences or ganglioneuroma-specific mortality occurred during follow-up (range, 0-266 months). The systematic review included 14 additional studies and 421 patients. The mean age of diagnosis was 39 years, and 47% were women. AGNs were discovered incidentally in 72% of patients, were predominantly unilateral (99%) and had a mean diameter of 5.8 cm and an unenhanced computed tomography (CT) attenuation of -118 to 49 Hounsfield units (HU). On imaging, 69% of AGNs were homogenous, 41% demonstrated calcifications, and 40% were lobulated. CONCLUSIONS AGNs are rare benign tumours that present with variable imaging features including large size, unenhanced CT attenuation >20 HU, calcifications and lobulated shape. Imaging characteristics can assist in establishing a diagnosis and avoiding an unnecessary adrenalectomy. The association of pheochromocytomas with AGNs is frequent. Diagnosis should include biochemical testing.

OBJECTIVE In an adult endocrine clinic, the majority of patients referred for evaluation of an incidentally discovered adrenal mass are aged more than 30 years, for which many national and international societies have developed management guidelines. However, adrenal incidentalomas in children and young adults are uncommon. We report the case of an 18-year-old woman with an incidentally discovered right-sided adrenal mass. METHODS We present the adrenal tests, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging results and treatment of a young woman with an adrenal mass that proved to be a ganglioneuroma. RESULTS A computed tomography scan showed a 2.2 × 2.6 cm right-sided adrenal mass with noncontrast Hounsfield units >10 and <50% washout. Magnetic resonance imaging was not typical of a lipid-rich adenoma. Blood and urine tests demonstrated normal secretion of cortisol, aldosterone, adrenal androgens, and catecholamines. Based on the patient's age and imaging studies, she underwent a right adrenalectomy, removing a 2.2 × 2.0 × 2.7-cm ganglioneuroma. CONCLUSION The differential diagnosis of an adrenal mass in children and adolescents is quite different compared with adult patients. There are no standardized guidelines for the management of adrenal masses in these younger age groups, although some authors recommend removing all adrenal masses, regardless of size or imaging characteristics, in all children aged more than 3 months. This case emphasizes how the management of adrenal masses in pediatric patients and young adults differs from guidelines published by endocrine and urologic societies.

Abstract
Background: Ganglioneuroma is a rare tumor derived from the neural crest that can occur in any sympathetic tissue. It corresponds to 0.3% to 2% of incidental adrenal tumors and <250 have been reported in the literature so far. Case Presentation: We present a case of a 30-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a large bilobed adrenal tumor found on a CT scan during the investigation of acute abdominal pain. The image also showed a rare anatomic variation of a left-sided inferior vena cava. Biochemical work-up for adrenal incidentaloma showed normal markers. Since we could not rule out malignancy, the patient was subjected to laparoscopic adrenalectomy and the pathology report showed an adrenal ganglioneuroma, a rare nonfunctioning tumor of the adrenal. Conclusion: Ganglioneuroma can present as a large bilobed adrenal tumor. The laparoscopic approach is feasible and safe. Preoperative planning is needed and vascular variations can be challenging during the procedure.

Abstract
Ganglioneuromas are rare benign tumors of neuroblastic origin that can occur anywhere along the sympathetic chain. They are rarely found in the gastrointestinal tract and can appear as solitary polypoid lesions or diffuse as part of a familial syndrome. They are often asymptomatic but may present with nonspecific symptoms depending on their anatomic location. They have no special endoscopic appearance and are diagnosed by histology and immunohistochemistry staining. We present a case of solitary gastric ganglioneuroma treated successfully with endoscopic resection.

Abstract
RATIONALE Ganglioneuromas are benign neoplasm of neuroblastic origin which arise from central or peripheral parts of the autonomic nervous system. They are normally found at posterior mediastinum, retroperitoneum, and the adrenal gland but ganglioneuromas are rarely found in the cervical region. PATIENT CONCERNS A 12-year-old boy was admitted with a left-lateral neck mass slow growing over a 7-days duration. The tumor was painless and was not associated with any systemic or compression-related symptoms. No symptoms of Horner's syndrome, including ptosis, myosis, ipsilateral facial anhidrosis, and flushing, were observed. Laboratory routine tests were within normal limits, and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a solid and well-circumscribed mass in the carotid space. DIAGNOSIS Due to the patient's symptoms, laboratory test results together with radiographic investigation findings, the 12 years old boy was diagnosed with cervical ganglioneuroma combined with tetralogy of Fallot. INTERVENTIONS Surgical excision. OUTCOMES The postoperative period was uneventful with the exception of Horner's syndrome on the left side in short period, and it was finally resolved after 8 months recovery. The patient is now in stable condition after operation, with improvement in symptoms during follow-up recovery. LESSONS Ganglioneuromas should be accounted as the differential diagnosis of pediatric soft tissue tumors of the head and neck. The diagnosis for ganglioneuromas in cervical region can only be ascertained with postoperative pathologic examination, and excision is considered as the only effective treatment modality known so far which may cause Horner's syndrome at times. However, patients have a favorable prognosis without recurrence overall.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We present a 17-year-old boy with an incidentally diagnosed left adrenal ganglioneuroma during the diagnostic workup of alopecia areata. CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION Laboratory investigations revealed vitamin D deficiency. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy was performed and ganglioneuroma was confirmed histologically. At follow-up, the vitamin D supplements improved the vitamin D levels followed by a gradual regression of alopecia areata. However, it recurred 18 months later despite the normal levels of serum vitamin D and no tumor recurrence. CONCLUSION Further studies should reveal the relationship between alopecia areata and ganglioneuroma as well as the role of vitamin D in alopecia areata.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ganglioneuroma (GN) is a slow-growing tumor originating from the neural crest-derived cells, which form the sympathetic nervous system. These tumors can affect anywhere along the peripheral autonomic ganglion sites and are most commonly found in the mediastinum and retroperitoneum. Spinal GNs are extremely rare and, so far, only 1 case arising from a lumbar nerve root has been reported in the English literature. GNs are often asymptomatic, and the majority of them are found incidentally in healthy subjects. Because of their slow growth, symptoms may result from the compressive effect of the tumor. CASE DESCRIPTION A 40-year-old man presented with a right sciatica episode accompanied by global muscle weakness and tingling pain. Findings of the neurologic examination displayed positive Lasegue test and sensory deficit over L5-S1 dermatomes. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine without contrast showed a well-circumscribed longitudinal lesion arising from L5-S1 disc space, moving us toward a diagnosis of lumbar disc herniation. During surgery, we observed a mass well-encapsulated and oval-shaped inside S1 right root. The patient underwent subtotal resection. Histopathologic examination showed clusters of ganglion mature cells with neuromatous stroma, consistent with a ganglioneuroma. CONCLUSIONS We report a case that illustrates the clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features of a ganglioneuroma mimicking a lumbosciatica syndrome and review related literature and similar cases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adrenal ganglioneuroma (AGN) is a rare tumor that originates from the gangliar cells of the sympathetic nervous system. It represents less than 5% of all adrenal masses. AGN occurs as a large mass, with benign behavior and no relevant symptoms and hormonal secretion, but it is often misdiagnosed because the preoperative radiological diagnosis is generally challenging. The aim of the present paper is to report the experience of a tertiary referral academic center regarding the management of AGN and review the relevant literature. METHODS The demographic, diagnostic, surgical, and pathological findings of 666 consecutive patients who were adrenalectomized at the Padua Endocrine Surgery Unit between 1990 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed in order to focus on AGN. RESULTS The pathology confirmed AGN in 10 patients (1.5% of cases; median age 35 years, range 19-73). The diagnosis was incidental and never available before surgery. Eight patients were asymptomatic, two presented lower back and abdominal pain. The mass was non-secreting in all cases. Preoperative imaging techniques were inconclusive about the nature of the mass in all cases. The median size of the tumor was 55 mm (range 30-80). The laparoscopic approach was performed in 60% of cases. No recurrences occurred after surgery at a median follow-up of 10 years (range 1.7-18.2). CONCLUSION The diagnosis of AGN may be challenging and most often occurs after surgery, since it is frequently confirmed by histological examination. Radical excision may be achieved by laparoscopic adrenalectomy, with a subsequent definitive cure and excellent prognosis at long term follow up.

Abstract
The fourth edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of endocrine tumours contains substantial new findings for the adrenal tumours. The tumours are presented in two chapters labelled as "Tumours of the adrenal cortex" and "Tumours of the adrenal medulla and extra-adrenal paraganglia." Tumours of the adrenal cortex are classified as cortical carcinoma, cortical adenoma, sex cord stromal tumours, adenomatoid tumour, mesenchymal and stromal tumours (myelolipoma and schwannoma), haematological tumours, and secondary tumours. Amongst them, schwannoma and haematological tumours are newly documented. The major updates in adrenal cortical lesions are noted in the genetics of the cortical carcinoma and cortical adenoma based on the data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Also, a system for differentiation of oncocytoma from oncocytic cortical carcinoma is adopted. Tumours of the adrenal medulla and extra-adrenal paraganglia comprise pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma (head and neck paraganglioma and sympathetic paraganglioma), neuroblastic tumours (neuroblastoma, nodular ganglioneuroblastoma, intermixed ganglioneuroblastoma, and ganglioneuroma), composite pheochromocytoma, and composite paraganglioma. In this group, neuroblastic tumours are newly included in the classification. The clinical features, histology, associated pathologies, genetics, and predictive factors of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma are the main changes introduced in this chapter of WHO classification of endocrine tumours. The term "metastatic pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma" is used to replace "malignant pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma." Also, composite pheochromocytoma and composite paraganglioma are now documented in separate sections instead of one. Overall, the new classification incorporated new data on pathology, clinical behaviour, and genetics of the adrenal tumours that are important for current management of patients with these tumours.

Abstract
Ganglioneuromas are rare, benign, well-differentiated tumors of the conus medullaris. Approximately 20 cases of spinal cord ganglioneuroma, and only 1 case of mixed chemodectoma-ganglioneuroma of the conus medullaris have been previously reported. The present study presents the case of a 38-year-old man with a histopathological diagnosis of conus medullaris ganglioneuroma. The patient presented with hypoesthesia in the lower limbs, muscle atrophy of the right lower limb and dysuria. Magnetic resonance imaging analysis led to a diagnosis of ependymoma. Histopathological analysis of the excised mass revealed typical, well-differentiated ganglion cells, consistent with a ganglioneuroma. The mass was associated with a neighboring syringomyelia. At an 18 month follow-up the patient had recovered, although some remaining difficulty in walking and urinating remained. The aim of the present report was to raise awareness that when ganglioneuromas present in unusual locations, analogous radiological findings may mislead investigators to consider more common pathologies and thus result in misdiagnosis. The present case demonstrates the importance of considering the potential differential diagnoses for neural tissue neoplasms.
