Abstract
LNTRODUCTION Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) can cause postmenopausal women to experience pain and interference. Identifying and exploring potential early diagnostic biomarkers of PMOP is of substantial clinical value and social significance. This study aimed to screen for potential novel diagnostic biomarkers of PMOP through a multiomics approach, providing new directions and ideas for the early prevention and treatment of this disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifteen postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and 12 without were recruited. Clinical information was collected, and various clinical biochemical parameters were tested. Plasma and fecal samples were collected and analyzed using Olink proteomics and gut microbial metabolomics. RESULTS The functions of the differentially abundant metabolites were mainly related to autophagy and arginine and proline metabolism and were involved in immunoinflammatory metabolic processes. Olink showed significant differences in the expression of seven inflammation-related proteins between the two groups. CONCLUSION We demonstrated that metabolic differences between PMOP patients and healthy controls were associated with inflammatory responses and found seven proteins with significant differences. Among these proteins, CDCP1, IL10, and IL-1alpha combined with clinical indicators had high discriminant efficiency in identifying PMOP. This is also the first study to demonstrate noteworthy changes in CDCP1 levels in patients with PMOP.

Abstract
Objective To explore the possible mechanisms by which follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) regulates postmenopausal osteoporosis through the FSH/FSH receptor (FSHr)/G protein/C/EBPβ/heat shock protein 90 alpha (HSP90α) signalling pathways. Methods We measured serum FSH, luteinising hormone (LH), and HSP90α levels in the serum and adipose tissue of women of childbearing age and menopausal status. In the in vivo studies, 12 B57CL female mice were divided equally into Sham, OVX, and OVX + FSHr Blocker groups. Serum levels of alkaline phosphatase, FSH, and HSP90α, along with StRACP vitality, were determined, and femur micro-computed tomography was performed. Additionally, FSH, FSHr, G protein, C/EBPβ, and HSP90α levels were assessed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Finally, we divided the human multiple myeloma cell line U266 into three groups. The activity of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) in the supernatant at different stages was detected, and myeloma cells were stained with TRAP. Results HSP90α levels in adipose tissue supernatant and serum were lower in women of childbearing age than in menopausal women (P < 0.05). Serum FSH and HSP90α levels demonstrated a strong correlation. Treatment with FSHr blockers resulted in decreased FSH, FSHr, G protein, C/EBPβ, and HSP90α levels in mice. TRAP staining of osteoclast-like cells exhibited a significantly higher intensity in the M-CSF + RANKL + recombinant HSP90α group than in the M-CSF + RANKL and blank control groups (P < 0.05). Conclusions Our results indicate that FSH promotes HSP90α secretion by adipocytes via the FSHr/G protein/C/EBPβ pathway. This mechanism affects osteoclast activity and exacerbates osteoporosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No consensus exists regarding which anthropometric measurements are related to bone mineral density (BMD), and this relationship may vary according to sex and age. A large Japanese cohort was analyzed to provide an understanding of the relationship between BMD and anthropometry while adjusting for known confounding factors. METHODS Our cohort included 10,827 participants who underwent multiple medical checkups including distal forearm BMD scans. Participants were stratified into four groups according to age (≥50 years or <50 years) and sex. The BMD values were adjusted for confounding factors, after which single and partial correlation analyses were performed. The prevalence of osteopenia was plotted for each weight index (weight or body mass index [BMI]) class. RESULTS Cross-sectional studies revealed that weight was more favorably correlated than BMI in the older group (R=0.278 and 0.212 in men and R=0.304 and 0.220 in women, respectively), whereas weight and BMI were weakly correlated in the younger age groups. The prevalence of osteopenia exhibited a negative linear relationship with weight among older women ≥50 years of age, and an accelerated increase was observed with decreasing weight in older men weighing <50 kg and younger women weighing <60 kg. When weight was replaced with BMI, the prevalence was low in most subgroups classified by weight. CONCLUSIONS Weight, rather than BMI, was the most important indicator of osteopenia but it might not be predictive of future bone loss.

Abstract
Background Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a systemic metabolic disorder typified by an imbalance in bone turnover, where bone resorption supersedes bone formation. This imbalance primarily arises from a decline in bone mass induced by estrogen deficiency, and an elevated risk of fractures resulting from degradation of bone microstructure. Despite recognizing these changes, the precise causative factors and potential molecular pathways remain elusive. In this study, we aimed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs), associated pathways, and the role of immune infiltration in osteoporosis, leveraging an integrated bioinformatics approach to shed light on potential underlying molecular mechanisms. Methods We retrieved the expression profiles of GSE230665 from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, comprising 15 femur samples, including 12 postmenopausal osteoporosis samples and 3 normal controls. From the aggregated microarray datasets, we derived differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for further bioinformatics analysis. We used WGCNA, analyzed DEGs, PPI, and conducted GO analysis to identify pivotal genes. We then used the CIBERSORT method to explore the degree of immune cell infiltration within femur specimens affected by postmenopausal osteoporosis. To probe into the relationship between pivotal genes and infiltrating immune cells, we conducted correlation analysis. Results We identified a total of 12,204 DEGs. Among these, 12,157 were up-regulated, and 47 were down-regulated. GO and KEGG pathway analyses indicated that these DEGs predominantly targeted cellular protein localization activity and associated signaling pathways. The protein-protein interaction network highlighted four central hub-genes: RPL31, RPL34, EEF1G, and BPTF. Principal component analysis indicated a positive correlation between the expression of these genes and resting NK cells (as per CIBERSORT). In contrast, the expression of RPL31, RPL34, and EEF1G showed a negative correlation with T cells (gamma delta per CIBERSORT). Conclusions Immune infiltration plays a role in the development of osteoporosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the link between hematopoietic and skeletal tissues in patients with fragility fractures. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of women older than 40 years who attended the Bone Disease Unit of "Sapienza" University of Rome for their first visit for osteoporosis from January 2020 to June 2022. RESULTS Fragility fractures were found in 61.8% of the sample. In particular, vertebral fractures in 35.5%, femoral fractures in 6.3%, Colles fractures in 16.5% and non-vertebral non-hip in 42.5%. Fractured patients were significantly older compared to non-fractured, had lower mean values of lumbar spine (p = 0.01), and femoral neck BMD (p = 0.007). A red blood cell distribution width (RDW) value higher than 15% was observed four times more in those with fractures compared to non-fractured patients (8.9% vs 2%, p = 0.01) and was associated with vertebral fracture after adjusting for age, BMI, menopause, nutritional status, smoking, osteoporosis and anemia (OR = 4.1, 95% CI 1.6-11.4, p = 0.003). Hematocrit was negatively associated with hip fracture also adjusting for age, BMI, menopause, nutritional status, smoking, osteoporosis (p = 0.025). CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates that RDW values were significantly associated with vertebral fracture and hematocrit with hip fracture. Since both parameters are included in the initial evaluation of patients with suspected bone fragility, our results should push doctors to look at these values with no incremental cost for national health services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of the present study was to investigate whether associations exist between inflammatory biomarkers and all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) or osteopenia. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database from the years 2007 to 2010, 2013 to 2014, and 2017 to 2018. The inflammatory biomarkers including neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil × platelet/lymphocyte (SII), neutrophil × monocyte/lymphocyte (SIRI), and neutrophil × monocyte × platelet/lymphocyte ratio (AISI) were calculated. RESULTS A total of 2,834 women were included, with a median survival of 113.51 (3.15) months. During follow-up, 602 women died of all-cause mortality and 185 women died of CVD. NLR, MLR, SIRI, and AISI were significantly associated with all-cause mortality in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis or osteopenia. NLR, MLR, SIRI, and AISI were related to CVD mortality in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis or osteopenia (All P < 0.05). Based on the results of the subgroup analysis, AISI, SIRI, and MLR were associated with all-cause mortality and CVD mortality in postmenopausal women with PMOP or osteopenia who had a history of CVD and diabetes. AISI, SII, MLR, and NLR were associated with all-cause mortality and CVD mortality in PMOP or osteopenia women with a body mass index (BMI) > 25 kg/m2. PLR was associated with all-cause mortality in PMOP or osteopenia women aged ≥ 65 years. CONCLUSION Inflammatory biomarkers were correlated with mortality risk in the PMOP or osteopenia population. This finding may be helpful for the prognosis management of PMOP or osteopenia in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intestinal flora has been proposed to mediate the occurrence of postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO). However, the mechanism by which microbes and their metabolites interactively promote PMO remains unknown. METHODS This study aimed to investigate changes in the intestinal flora and associated metabolites, and their role in PMO. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metabolomics were performed to obtain postmenopausal women with osteopenia (lower bone mass, LBM), postmenopausal women with osteoporosis (OST), and healthy women as the control group. RESULTS We identified taxa-specific and metabolite differences in the intestinal flora of the participants of this study. The pathogenic bacteria Klebsiella (0.59% and 0.71%, respectively) and Escherichia-Shigella (2.72% and 4.30%, respectively) were enriched in the LBM and OST groups (p < 0.05). Some short-chain fatty acid (SCFAs) producing bacteria, Lactobacillus, Akkermansia, Prevotella, Alistipes, and Butyricicoccus, were reduced in patients with LBM and OST compared to the control. Moreover, fecal metabolomic analyses suggested that the metabolites of indole-3-acetic acid and 7-ketodeoxycholic acid were altered in the LBM and OST groups compared to the control (p < 0.05). Enrichment analysis suggested that valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis; aromatic amino acid biosynthesis; and phenylalanine metabolism were significantly associated with the identified microbiota biomarkers and OST. Moreover, metabolite marker signatures distinguished patients in the OST from those in the control group with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.978 and 1.00 in the negative and positive ion modes, respectively. Finally, we also found that the fecal level of interleukin-10 (IL-10) in the OST group was significantly lower than that in the control group and LBM group (p < 0.05), while tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were significantly higher in the OST group than that in the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study provides robust evidence connecting the intestinal flora and fecal metabolomics with PMO. Integrated metabolite and microbiota analyses demonstrated that in addition to dysregulated bacteria, indole-3-acetic acid, 7-ketodeoxycholic acid, and other metabolites can be used for the distinguish of LBM and PMO.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was to analyze the association of calcium intake and metabolic equivalent (MET) with vertebral fractures, and to explore the role of MET between calcium intake and vertebral fractures. METHOD This cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2013-2014. The study involved individuals aged ≥ 50 years old with complete information on vertebral fracture, calcium intake, and physical activity. Vertebral fracture assessment is obtained using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry to perform a lateral scan of the thoracolumbar spine. Calcium intake included total nutrient intake and total dietary supplements. The total MET is the sum of the METs for each activity (Vigorous/ moderate work-related activities, walking or bicycling for transportation and vigorous/ moderate recreational activities). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were utilized to investigate the effect of calcium intake, MET, and their combined effect on vertebral fracture. RESULTS A total of 766 participants were included in the analysis, and 54 participants had vertebral fractures. The median calcium intake and MET were 8.43 mcg and 280.00, respectively. Multivariate results showed that neither calcium intake nor MET as continuous or categorical variables was significantly associated with vertebral fractures. MET < 160 and calcium intake ≥ 670 mg group was associated with the decreased risks of vertebral fracture [odds ratio (OR) = 0.47, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.26-0.83, P = 0.032] after adjusting for age, race, energy, total femur bone mineral density (BMD), and femoral neck BMD. In the group of MET < 160, increased calcium intake was associated with a reduced risk of vertebral fracture, with a decreased OR value. In the group of MET ≥ 160, increased calcium intake was associated with an increased risk of vertebral fracture, with an increased OR value. CONCLUSION The combination of MET < 160 and calcium intake ≥ 670 mg was associated with decreased risks of vertebral fractures. There may be an interaction between calcium intake and MET on vertebral fracture risk.

Abstract
Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a significant threat to human health globally. Genistein, a soy-derived isoflavone, is regarded as a promising anti-osteoporosis drug with the effects of promoting osteoblastogenesis and suppressing osteoclastogenesis. However, its oral bioavailability (6.8%) is limited by water solubility, intestinal permeability, and biotransformation. Fortunately, 8-prenelylated genistein (8PG), a derivative of genistein found in Erythrina Variegate, presented excellent predicted oral bioavailability (51.64%) with an improved osteoblastogenesis effect, although its effects on osteoclastogenesis and intestinal biotransformation were still unclear. In this study, an in vitro microbial transformation platform and UPLC-QTOF/MS analysis method were developed to explore the functional metabolites of 8PG. RANKL-induced RAW264.7 cells were utilized to evaluate the effects of 8PG on osteoclastogenesis. Our results showed that genistein was transformed into dihydrogenistein and 5-hydroxy equol, while 8PG metabolites were undetectable under the same conditions. The 8PG (10-6 M) was more potent in inhibiting osteoclastogenesis than genistein (10-5 M) and it down-regulated NFATC1, cSRC, MMP-9 and Cathepsin K. It was concluded that 8-prenyl plays an important role in influencing the osteoclast activity and intestinal biotransformation of 8PG, which provides evidence supporting the further development of 8PG as a good anti-osteoporosis agent.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to assess the bone mineral density (BMD) and T-score reference values in a population from 18 to 95 years old in Lombardy region, Italy. This study also investigates the association between BMD values and body mass index (BMI) divided by gender and age. The evaluation of BMD was analyzed by T-score and BMD in each site, femur, and column. A total of 10,503 patients (9,627 females and 876 males, 65.04±12.18 years) have been enrolled in this study. The women hip femur reference values associated with a situation of osteopenia highlighted in-line with the class of age of 45 to 55 years were: mean values: -1.3132 T-score; 95% confidence interval (CI): -1.3600 to -1.2664 and of osteoporosis from the class of age 85 to 95 years, mean values: -2.6591 T-score, 95% CI: -2.7703 to -2.5479. The men hip femur reference values associated with a situation of osteopenia highlighted in-line with the class of age of 45 to 55 years were: mean values: 1.2986 T-score; 95% CI: -1.5454 to -1.0518. A positive association between BMI and the two sites of BMD was recorded (p > .05). This study provides an Italian overview of national and regional reference values about the BMD and T-score values divided by age and gender as reference values for clinicians for a correct assessment and monitoring.

Abstract
Background Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) is influenced by estrogen metabolism and immune response, which are modulated by several factors including the microbiome and inflammation. Therefore, there is increasing interest in understanding the role of microbiota in PMO. Objectives To investigate variations in gut microbiota (GM) and vaginal microbiota (VM) in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Methods A total of 132 postmenopausal women were recruited for the study and divided into osteoporosis (n = 34), osteopenia (n = 47), and control (n = 51) groups based on their T score. The serum levels of interleukin (IL)-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein were determined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Additionally, 16S rRNA gene V3-V4 region sequencing was performed to investigate the GM and VM of the participants. Results Significant differences were observed in the microbial compositions of fecal and vaginal samples between groups (p < 0.05). It was noted that for GM, Romboutsia, unclassified_Mollicutes, and Weissella spp. were enriched in the control group, whereas the abundances of Fusicatenibacter, Lachnoclostridium, and Megamonas spp. were higher in the osteoporosis group than in the other groups. Additionally, for VM, Lactobacillus was enriched in the control group, whereas the abundances of Peptoniphilus, Propionimicrobium, and Gallicola spp. were higher in the osteoporosis group than in the other groups. The predicted functional capacities of GM and VM were different in the various groups. We also found that the serum level of IL-10 in the osteoporosis group was significantly lower than that in the control group and osteopenia group, while TNF-α was significantly higher in the osteoporosis group than that in the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion The results show that changes in BMD in postmenopausal women are associated with the changes in GM and VM; however, changes in GM are more closely correlated with PMO than VM.

Abstract
Objective Osteoporosis (OP), clinically featured with a low bone mineral density (BMD) and high risk of bone fracture, has become a major risk factor of disability and death in the elders, especially in postmenopausal women. The gut microbiome (GM) is thought to be implicated in bone metabolism. Herein, we clarified the composition signature and gene functional profile of GM in older people with normal and low BMD. Design and Methods A total of 455 participants underwent the BMD measurement and biochemical detection. GM analysis was further performed on 113 cases of postmenopausal women and men aged over 50, including both 16S rRNA and metagenomic sequencing. Results Generally, the BMD value was significantly lower in the older age groups, especially in the postmenopausal women. Consistently, we observed obvious vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency in females (compared to the male, P < 0.0001). The results from 16S rRNA sequencing revealed higher numbers of OTUs and diversity indexes in females than in males. The abundance in composition of Firmicutes and Clostridiales were correlated with the BMD values in females. LEfSe analysis discovered several enriched bacteria taxons in OP and normal control (NC) subgroups. A positive correlation between the number of genes and BMD values was observed in females based on metagenomic sequencing analysis. Furthermore, we identified the connecting modules among the GM composition – gene functional signature – BMD value/T score in both females and males. Conclusions This study provides evidences upon which to understand the mechanisms of the effects of GM on bone health, consequently revealing the physiology status and potential diagnostic/therapeutic targets based on GM for OP and postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP). Besides, the status of vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency need to be concerned and improved in the Chinese people.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia is a common comorbidity in elderly patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP). Drynaria fortunei (Rhizoma drynariae) is well-known in traditional Chinese medicine for its ability to improve bone mineral density (BMD). However, whether and how Drynaria fortunei improves plasma lipid profiles in elderly PMOP patients remains unclear. METHODS Eighty elderly female patients with concurrent PMOP and hyperlipemia were randomly assigned to Drynaria fortunei 2(n = 40) or control (n = 40) groups. The clinical efficacies of Drynaria fortunei were evaluated. At 0, 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month of follow-up, plasma levels of IL-1β, IL-18, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 were measured using ELISA, whereas PBMC levels of NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, NF-κB, SIRT1, and Notch1 were measured using RT-qPCR. PBMC isolated from PMOP patients were cultured and treated with Drynaria fortunei to determine its influence on NLRP3 inflammasome and associated cytokines. RESULTS Drynaria fortunei effectively improved patients' BMD and lipid profiles. IL-1β, IL-18, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8 levels, as well as inflammasome-molecules of NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, and NF-κB increased over time in the control group, but were significantly attenuated with Drynaria fortunei administration. In vitro, Drynaria fortunei suppressed NLRP3 inflammasome and associated cytokines by increasing SIRT1 or decreasing Notch1. Drynaria fortunei had inhibitory effects on NLRP3 inflammasome and Notch1 even when SIRT1 expression was suppressed. CONCLUSIONS Drynaria fortunei has been demonstrated to significantly improve lipid profiles for elderly PMOP patients. Drynaria fortunei may down-regulate Notch1 independently of SIRT1 to suppress NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated inflammation, thus improving plasma lipid profile.

Abstract
Objectives: Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disease. It is considered the silent epidemic, with high prevalence after menopause, in the current time. Different studies conducted in Iran have reported different prevalence. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aims to estimate the overall prevalence of osteoporosis in Iranian postmenopausal women. Methods: The national scientific databases Scientific Information Database and MagIran and the international scientific databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched for related articles without any time limitation. The keywords osteopenia, osteoporosis, post menopause, OP, bone mineral density, and Iran along with their combinations were used in the search. The inconsistency in the data was examined using I2 test. The data were analyzed using the meta-analysis method and the random-effects model in Stata software, version 14. Results: The analysis of 26 articles with a sample size of 6735 showed that the prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia in Iranian postmenopausal women is, respectively, 33.70% (95% CI [confidence interval]: 22.68-44.73) and 47.60% (95% CI: 32.88-62.32). The pooled prevalence of osteoporosis in the spine and in the femur bone was 31.99% and 15.93%, respectively. Also, the prevalence of osteopenia in the spine and in the femur bone was 22.48% and 39.88%, respectively. Conclusion: Osteoporosis and osteopenia are highly prevalent in Iranian postmenopausal women to the extent that one-third of women suffer from osteoporosis and nearly half of them suffer from osteopenia. It seems essential to teach a healthy lifestyle to these women to reduce the prevalence of these issues.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is the most common of all metabolic bone disorders characterized by loss of bone strength, due to modifications in bone turnover. It leads to bone fragility and increased fracture risk. Because of the increasing aging of the world population, the number of people affected by osteoporosis is continuously increasing. The WHO operational definition of osteoporosis, based on a measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), identifies patients at greatest risk of fracture. However, in the population overall a greater total number of fractures occurs in individuals with BMD values above threshold for osteoporosis diagnosis; for this reason, algorithms have been developed to improve the identification of individuals at high fracture risk, including clinical risk factors for fracture. The correct diagnosis of osteoporosis with an appropriate and accurate use of diagnostic imaging results in better management in terms of adequate treatment and follow-up. Moreover, screening strategies will improve identification of patients who are most likely to benefit from drug treatment to prevent fracture. All women after the age of 65 years previously untested and women after the age of 50 years with previous low trauma fractures should be screened by DXA. In fact, osteoporosis-related fractures cause a significant increase in morbidity and mortality, decreasing the quality of life, with an increasing social and economic burdens. For this reason, fracture risk assessment should be a high priority amongst health measures.

Abstract
Purpose Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) patients may suffer from chronic pain and increased fractures due to brittle bones that seriously affect their normal work and life. Exploring the pathogenesis of PMO can help clinicians construct individualized therapeutic targets. Methods Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by analyzing the microarray assays of monocytes from 20 PMO and 20 control samples. Weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) and gene set enrichment analysis (GAEA) were performed. Genes associated with PMO were identified in the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD). miRNAs associated with osteoporosis were found in miRNet, and target genes were predicted. Hub genes and functional pathways associated with PMO were also identified. miRNA-mRNA networks were constructed. The association between hub genes and PMO was analyzed in the CTD. Results A total of 1055 genes were up-regulated, and 694 genes were down-regulated in PMO samples (P<0.01). Five modules were identified by WGCNA. The blue module was significantly associated with PMO and selected for further analysis (P < 0.05). A total of 229 genes were significantly associated with PMO gene significance and module membership. Pathway variations were predominantly enriched in mRNA metabolic process, RNA splicing, Notch signaling pathway, apoptosis, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction and so on. We identified 10 hub genes associated with PMO with different inference scores. Conclusion We identified genes, miRNAs, and pathways associated with PMO. These molecules may participate in the pathogenesis of PMO and serve as therapeutic targets.

Abstract
As a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), raloxifene is used in healthy postmenopausal women to prevent bone loss and reduce fractures. However, the benefit of raloxifene is uncertain in the treatment of osteoporosis among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or those who require maintenance dialysis. We assessed the safety and efficacy of raloxifene in this particular population. Studies were selected from PubMed, Springer, CNKI (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure) and Wanfang Database. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and prospective studies with control/placebo groups were included. Five studies were included with a total of 244 participants (121 patients in the raloxifene group and 123 patients in the placebo/control group). The median duration of treatment was 12 months. The incidence rate of side effects of raloxifene was 0/121 (0%). There was a significant improvement of lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) levels in the raloxifene group compared with the placebo group (MD: 33.88, 95% CI: 10.93, 56.84, p=0.004). There was no significant difference concerning the improvement of femoral neck BMD (MD: 8.42, 95% CI: -10.21, 27.04, p=0.38), intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) (MD: -12.62, 95% CI: -35.36, 10.13, p=0.28), calcium (MD: -0.08, 95% CI: -0.61, 0.44, p=0.76), phosphorus (MD: 0.18, 95% CI: -0.12, 0.48, p=0.23) or bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP) (MD: -4.33, 95% CI: -14.44, 5.79, p=0.40). Raloxifene seems to be effective in improving the lumbar spine BMD in postmenopausal women with ESRD. More large RCTs are necessary to evaluate the long-term safety of raloxifene in uremic patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Osteoporosis and atherosclerosis share common risk factors. Aim of this study was to test if FRAX (which is an algorithm that can identify subjects at risk of fracture), without or with BMD values, also adjusted for trabecular bone score (TBS) was able to identify subclinical atherosclerosis, evaluated by measurement of carotid intima media thickness (cIMT ≥ 0.9 mm) as compared to DXA values. METHODS Ninety postmenopausal women underwent DXA measurement and cIMT evaluation. For each patient, the FRAX algorithm for major osteoporotic fracture (M) and for hip fracture (H) without BMD was computed, together with FRAX with BMD and TBS-adjusted FRAX. Serum levels of osteoprotegerin, sRANKL, and interleukin-6 were also measured. RESULTS There were no differences in anthropometric parameters and cardiovascular risk factors between subjects with cIMT ≥ 0.9 mm (35% of subjects, group A) compared to those with cIMT < 0.9 mm (group B). The prevalence of osteoporosis and FRAX BMD, TBS-adjusted FRAX both for M and H were higher in group A compared to group B. The best ROC curves to identify subjects with a cIMT ≥ 0.9 mm were: lumbar spine T-score, with a threshold of - 2.5 SD (area under the curve, AUC 0.64; p = 0.02) with a sensibility of 50% and a specificity of 76%; TBS-adjusted FRAX H with a sensibility of 50% and a specificity of 72% (AUC 0.64; p = 0.01 with a threshold of 3%). Interleukin-6 positively correlated with FRAX BMD H and M. CONCLUSIONS FRAX without BMD does not identify subclinical carotid atherosclerosis, while lumbar spine T-score and TBS-adjusted FRAX H similarly detected it with higher specificity for T-score.

Abstract
We designed, implemented, and tested a clinical decision support system at the Research Center for the Study of Menopause and Osteoporosis within the University of Ferrara (Italy). As an independent module of our system, we implemented an original machine learning system for rule extraction, enriched with a hierarchical extraction methodology and a novel rule evaluation technique. Such a module is used in everyday operation protocol, and it allows physicians to receive suggestions for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. In this paper, we design and execute an experiment based on two years of data, in order to evaluate and report the reliability of our suggestion system. Our results are encouraging, and in some cases reach expected accuracies of around 90%.

Abstract
Bone‑related diseases comprise a large group of common diseases, including fractures, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis (OA), which affect a large number of individuals, particularly the elderly. The progressive destruction and loss of alveolar bone caused by periodontitis is a specific type of bone loss, which has a high incidence and markedly reduces the quality of life of patients. With the existing methods of prevention and treatment, the incidence and mortality of bone‑related diseases are still gradually increasing, creating a significant financial burden to societies worldwide. To prevent the occurrence of bone‑related diseases, delay their progression or reverse the injuries they cause, new alternative or complementary treatments need to be developed. Melatonin exerts numerous physiological effects, including inducing anti‑inflammatory and antioxidative functions, resetting circadian rhythms and promoting wound healing and tissue regeneration. Melatonin also participates in the health management of bone and cartilage. In the present review, the potential roles of melatonin in the pathogenesis and progression of bone injury, osteoporosis, OA and periodontitis are summarized. Furthermore, the high efficiency and diversity of the physiological regulatory effects of melatonin are highlighted and the potential benefits of the use of melatonin for the clinical prevention and treatment of bone‑related diseases are discussed.

Abstract
AIMS Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is a growing health problem affecting many postmenopausal women. This study intended to identify the role of dexmedetomidine (Dex) in osteoporosis (OP). MAIN METHODS Microarray analysis was performed for the gene expression profiles of PMOP patients and postmenopausal healthy volunteers, and the most differentially expressed microRNA (miR)-361-5p was verified in clinic, and its diagnostic value in PMOP patients was analyzed. After establishment of OP model by ovariectomy, Dex treatment and overexpression of miR-361-5p or vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) were performed in OP rats or isolated bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Bone mineral density (BMD) related indexes and levels of osteogenesis-angiogenesis related genes were measured. The apoptosis and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs were detected. After human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and BMSCs were cocultured, the angiogenesis of BMSCs was detected by Matrigel-based angiogenesis experiment. KEY FINDINGS miR-361-5p was highly expressed in PMOP patients and OP rats, with good diagnostic effect on PMOP. After Dex treatment, the expressions of miR-361-5p, VEGFA, BMD related indexes were increased in OP rats. In BMSCs, level of osteogenesis-angiogenesis related genes were increased after adding Dex, and the apoptosis was decreased after coculture of HUVECs and BMSCs. miR-361-5p could target VEGFA. After miR-361-5p overexpression + Dex treatment, the indexes related to osteogenesis and angiogenesis in OP rats and BMSCs were decreased, which were reversed after further overexpressing VEGFA. SIGNIFICANCE Dex can enhance VEGFA by inhibiting miR-361-5p, and then promote osteogenesis-angiogenesis, thus providing potential targets for PMOP treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate clinical features, treatments, and outcomes of osteoporotic patients admitted to internal medicine and geriatric wards compared with non-osteoporotic patients (REPOSI registry). METHODS We studied 4714 patients hospitalized between 2010 and 2016. We reported age, sex, educational level, living status, comorbidities and drugs taken, Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (CIRS), Barthel Index, Short-Blessed Test, 4-item Geriatric Depression Scale, serum hemoglobin, creatinine, and clinical outcomes. Osteoporosis was defined based on the diagnoses recorded at admission, according to the following ICD9: 733, 805-813, 820-823. RESULTS Twelve percent of the patients had a preadmission diagnosis of osteoporosis. Only 20% of these had been prescribed oral bisphosphonates; 34% were taking vitamin D supplements. Osteoporotic patients were significantly older, with lower BMI, higher CIRS, and taking more drugs. They were significantly more depressed, less independent, with a higher severity of cognitive impairment compared with non-osteoporotic patients. At discharge, the number of patients receiving treatment for osteoporosis did not change. Length of stay and inhospital mortality did not differ between groups. Osteoporotic patients were more frequently nonhome discharged compared with those without osteoporosis (14.8 vs. 7.9%, p = 0.0007), mostly discharged to physical therapy or rehabilitation (8.8 vs. 2.5% of patients, p < 0.0001). Among osteoporotic patients deceased 3 months after discharge, the number of those treated with vitamin D, with or without calcium supplements, was significantly lower compared with survivors (12 vs. 32%, p = 0.0168). CONCLUSIONS The diagnosis of osteoporosis is poorly considered both during hospital stay and at discharge; osteoporotic patients are frailer compared to non-osteoporotic patients.

Abstract
An adequate calcium and vitamin D intake may play a role in preventing osteoporosis, but the contribution of the different food sources of calcium with regards to the risk of osteoporosis been barely explored. This observational study evaluated the calcium intake through a food frequency questionnaire in 126 adult women with not previously diagnosed osteoporosis undergoing Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) to screen for osteoporosis, and to correlate the calcium intake with parameters of bone density, measured by DXA. Total daily calcium intake and daily intake from food were similar among women found to have osteoporosis, osteopenia or normal condition. The main food source was milk and dairy products, while calcium supplementation was consumed by only 14% of subjects, irrespectively from osteoporosis conditions. DXA parameters were not significantly correlated with total daily calcium intake and calcium from food. The present study highlighted no qualitative and quantitative differences in the consumption of food groups contributing to calcium intakes in women with and without osteoporosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Today, osteoporosis is the most common bone disease and an important public health problem in all developed countries. The objective of this study was to estimate the costs associated with the management and treatment of osteoporosis in order to assess the economic burden in Italy for 2017, in terms of direct medical costs and social security costs. METHODS A cost of illness model was developed to estimate the average cost per year sustained by the NHS (National Health Service) and Social Security System in Italy. A systematic literature review was performed to obtain epidemiological, direct and indirect costs parameters where available. Hospitalisation costs were calculated considering the administrative database of the hospital discharge records for the period 2008-2016. Patients were enrolled in the analysis if they report the subsequent inclusion criteria: age ≥ 45 years and presence of osteoporosis in primary or secondary diagnosis (ICD9-CM 733.0) and/or presence of a major fracture in primary or secondary diagnosis (excluding road accidents) in the following locations: spine (codes ICD9-CM: 805;806), femur (codes ICD9-CM: 820; 821), radius and ulna (codes ICD9-CM: 813.4; 813.5), humerus (codes ICD9-CM: 812.0-812.5), pelvis (code ICD9-CM: 808), tibia and fibula (codes ICD9-CM: 823), ankle (code ICD9: 824) and ribs (codes ICD9-CM: 807.0; 807.1). Costs were estimated considering the diagnosis-related group (DRG) national tariff associated with each hospitalisation. Finally, the administrative databases of the Italian National Social Security Institute (INPS) (2009-2015) were analysed for the estimate the pension and disability costs from the social perspective. RESULTS The model estimated an average annual economic burden of osteoporosis in Italy of €2.2 billion. Of this cost, approximately 80% (€1.8 billion) was associated with hospitalisations, 16% (€351 million) for pharmacological treatments, 3% (€71 million) for ambulatory visits, and 0.6% (€13 million) for social security costs. The average yearly cost per patient was equal to €8691 (€8591 for hospitalisations). Analysing severe patients, hospitalisation costs increase to €12,336 (+ 44% if compared to non-severe osteoporosis patients). CONCLUSIONS The analysis showed that osteoporosis represents one of the main health problems in Italy and the ability to maintain patients in a non-severe health state could decrease the economic burden from both NHS and social perspective.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Many studies have explored the association between neuropathy and osteoporosis in patients with diabetes mellitus. However, the results still remain inconsistent and controversial. We aimed to estimate the association between diabetic neuropathy and osteoporosis. METHODS Databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane library, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), and Wanfang, were screened from inception to 30 March 2020. Studies were selected and data were extracted by two independent reviewers. Study characteristics and quality sections were reviewed independently. Pooled ORs and 95% CIs were calculated using random effects model when evidence of heterogeneity was present; otherwise, fixed effects model was used. Meta-regression and subgroup analyses were performed to explore the source of heterogeneity. Sensitivity analysis and publication bias were also tested. RESULTS A total of 11 studies with 27,585 participants were included in this analysis which indicated that there was an increased odd between diabetic neuropathy and osteoporosis (overall OR 2.20, 95% CI 1.71-2.83). In the subgroup analyses and meta-regression, diabetic neuropathy has no significant difference in osteoporosis or fracture (p = 0.532). And osteoporosis also has no significant difference in type 1 or type 2 diabetic neuropathy (p = 0.668). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis suggests that patients with diabetic neuropathy have a significantly increased chance of developing osteoporosis, even fragility fracture. The clinicians should pay more attention to the patients with diabetic neuropathy. Further studies were still needed to explore the confounding factors among studies and to elucidate the underlying biological mechanisms.

Abstract
Reduced bone mineral density (BMD) is associated with an altered microbiota in senile osteoporosis. However, the relationship among gut microbiota, BMD and bone metabolic indexes remains unknown in postmenopausal osteoporosis. In this study, fecal microbiota profiles for 106 postmenopausal individuals with osteopenia (n=33) or osteoporosis (n=42) or with normal BMD (n=31) were determined. An integrated 16S rRNA gene sequencing and LC-MS-based metabolomics approach was applied to explore the association of estrogen-reduced osteoporosis with the gut microbiota and fecal metabolic phenotype. Adjustments were made using several statistical models for potential confounding variables identified from the literature. The results demonstrated decreased bacterial richness and diversity in postmenopausal osteoporosis. Additionally, showed significant differences in abundance levels among phyla and genera in the gut microbial community were found. Moreover, postmenopausal osteopenia-enriched N-acetylmannosamine correlated negatively with BMD, and distinguishing metabolites were closely associated with gut bacterial variation. Both serum procollagen type I N propeptide (P1NP) and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-1) correlated positively with osteopenia-enriched Allisonella, Klebsiella and Megasphaera. However, we did not find a significant correlation between bacterial diversity and estrogen. These observations will lead to a better understanding of the relationship between bone homeostasis and the microbiota in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Abstract
Purpose Chronic pain is one of the most common complications of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Since oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of postmenopausal osteoporosis, we explored whether oxidative stress contributes to postmenopausal osteoporotic pain. Methods Osteoporosis was induced in mice by ovariectomy (OVX). Pain-related behaviours were assessed by measuring sensitivity to mechanical, thermal and cold stimulation. The expression of pain-related transcripts, such acid-sensing ion channel 3 (ASIC3), transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), was evaluated. Plasma markers of oxidative stress were also measured. In addition, the effects of the reactive oxygen species scavenger phenyl N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN) on these parameters were assessed. Results The OVX mice presented hyperalgesia, as demonstrated by decreased paw withdrawal thresholds to mechanical stimulation and withdrawal latencies to thermal and cold stimulation, along with upregulated expression of ASIC3, TRPV1 and CGRP in the dorsal root ganglia, spinal cord and thalamus tissue. OVX elevated the plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs). However, the administration of PBN alleviated these effects. Conclusion Our results indicated that oxidative stress contributes to hyperalgesia in OVX mice. Enhanced oxidative stress may be associated with osteoporotic pain. Antioxidant treatment could help alleviate chronic pain in postmenopausal osteoporotic patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis and hypertension are frequent and often coexisting diseases among the elderly. Recent studies suggested that both diseases may share the same etiopathology. Moreover, the treatment of hypertension can affect the bone mineral density and worsen osteoporosis. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the prevalence of low bone mass and osteoporosis in postmenopausal Syrian women and investigate their relationship with hypertension and antihypertensive drugs. METHODS 813 postmenopausal women were involved in this cross-sectional study, aged between 40 and 96 yrs. Their menopause duration ranged between 1 and 43 yrs. Bone mineral density was measured using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at the total lumbar spine (L1-L4) and left hip. T-score values were used to determine the diagnosis of osteoporosis. The existence of HTN was defined as blood pressure ≥130/85 mmHg or a history of hypertension medication. RESULTS Using the world health organization criteria, 24% had osteoporosis and 45.2% had low bone mass. The incidence of osteoporosis and low bone mass significantly increased with age and menopause duration and decreased with BMI. Prevalence of hypertension was almost equal among the women who had or did not have osteoporosis. However, hypertensive women who used thiazides or beta blockers had higher values of total lumbar BMD compared with the women who did not. CONCLUSION Hypertension in postmenopausal Syrian women aged over 40 was not found to be associated with osteoporosis. However, the mean total lumbar BMD of the hypertensive women who took thiazide diuretics or beta blocker was found to be increased significantly comparing to the women who did not take either.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between renal function and bone mineral density (BMD) is controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of renal function with BMD and osteoporosis risk in healthy postmenopausal Chinese women. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in 776 healthy postmenopausal Chinese women. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure BMDs. Clinical, demographic, and biochemical data were obtained at the time of image acquisition. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using a Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation. RESULTS Women with eGFR levels of at least 90 ml/min/1.73m2 had a lower prevalence of osteoporosis compared with women with decreased eGFR levels (60 ml/min/1.73 m2 ≤ eGFR < 90.0 ml/min/1.73 m2). BMDs at femoral neck and total hip were significantly lower in the lower eGFR class than the higher class (0.717 ± 0.106 vs 0.744 ± 0.125 g/cm2, P < 0.01; 0.796 ± 0.116 vs 0.823 ± 0.129 g/cm2, P < 0.01, respectively). eGFR was positively correlated with BMDs at femoral neck and total hip in unadjusted analysis (P < 0.05). After controlling for age, menopausal duration and body mass index (BMI), decreased eGFR was not associated with osteoporosis risk. CONCLUSIONS After adjustments for age, menopausal duration and BMI, the decline in renal function was not independently associated with osteoporosis risk in healthy postmenopausal Chinese women.

We aimed to compare proximal femur geometry and biomechanics in postmenopausal women with osteoarthritis (OA) and/or osteoporosis (OP), using quantitative computed tomography (QCT). A retrospective analysis of QCT scans of the proximal femur of 175 postmenopausal women was performed. Morphometric and densitometric data of the proximal femur were used to evaluate its biomechanics. We found, 21 had a normal bone mineral density (BMD), 72 had osteopenia, and 81 were diagnosed with OP. Radiographic findings of hip OA were seen in 43.8%, 52.8%, and 39.5% of the normal BMD, osteopenic, and OP groups, respectively (p < 0.05). OA was significantly correlated with total hip volume (r = 0.21), intertrochanteric cortical volume (r = 0.25), and trochanteric trabecular volume (r = 0.20). In each densitometric group, significant differences in hip geometry and BMD were found between the OA and non-OA subgroups. Hip OA and OP often coexist. In postmenopausal women, these diseases coexist in 40% of cases. Both OA and OP affect hip geometry and biomechanics. OA does so regardless of densitometric status. Changes are mostly reflected in the cortical bone. OA leads to significant changes in buckling ratio (BR) in both OP and non-OP women.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the impact of pharmacological treatment in osteoporosis patients with recent fracture and to assess the incidence of subsequent fracture and all-cause mortality. METHODS This observational retrospective study was based on data from administrative databases of five Italian Local Health Units. Osteoporosis patients aged ≥ 50 years with hospitalization for vertebral or hip fracture occurring between 01/01/2011 and 31/12/2015 were included. Treatment adherence was calculated using the medication possession ratio. Multivariable proportional hazard Cox model was used to identify factors associated with time to re-fracture and all-cause mortality. RESULTS A cohort of 3475 patients were included and 41.5% of them did not receive any specific anti-fracture treatment. Among treated patients (N = 2032), the majority (83.6%) received calcium/vitamin D supplementation. Over a mean follow-up of 3 years, the risk of subsequent fractures was 44.4% lower in treated patients compared to untreated ones (HR = 0.556, 95% CI = 0.420-0.735, p < 0.001) and 64.4% lower in those receiving calcium/vitamin D supplementation compared to osteoporosis treatment only (HR = 0.356, 95% CI = 0.237-0.533, p < 0.001). The risk of re-fracture was 77.2% lower in treated patients who were adherent to medication (HR = 0.228, 95% CI = 0.139-0.376, p < 0.001). Treated patients had 64% lower mortality risk over the follow-up compared to untreated ones (HR = 0.360, 95% CI = 0.310-0.418, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS A consistent proportion of osteoporosis patients did not receive specific treatment after a fracture, showing poor adherence to national guidelines on osteoporosis treatment. Osteoporosis drug treatment, and to a greater extent in combination with calcium/vitamin D, and adherence were correlated with lower risk of both re-fracture and all-cause mortality.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to evaluate the adherence to treatment with bisphosphonates in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis referred to a primary care clinic. METHODS A total of 7257 outpatients were referred to the primary care service where the study was conducted. We retrieved data of postmenopausal women to which bisphosphonates have been prescribed in the period January 1, 2000-December 31, 2014, and analyzed the group of patients who had discontinued the drug. RESULTS The total number of women treated with bisphosphonates was 285 (mean age 72 ± 9.8 years). At the time the data were retrieved, 157 (55% of the total) had discontinued therapy. Among them, 119 (41.7%) agreed to participate in the study. They reported the following reasons for treatment discontinuation: withdrawal by another physician (40%), lack of motivation (20%), absence of BMD improvement (14%), uncomfortable way of drug administration (11%), side effects (6%), fear of side effects (1.6%), high number of concomitant medications (0.8%), and others (6.6%). Sixty patients (50.4%) discontinued therapy within 2 years, 27 patients (23%) > 2 and ≤ 5 years and 32 (27%) after 5 years. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrates that more than half of women with postmenopausal osteoporosis referred to a primary care service discontinued bisphosphonates before the clinical effect can be seen and mostly because of advice by physicians not initially prescribing the drug. There is an inappropriate management of bisphosphonate therapy in terms of therapeutic efficacy and strategies aimed at ameliorating clinical management of osteoporosis patients are warranted.

Abstract
PURPOSE The review focused on the role that media reporting plays in the level of public awareness about osteoporosis and its influence on osteoporosis treatment decisions. METHODS We reviewed the literature on the role of media on three main aspects influencing patient adherence to osteoporosis treatment: the awareness of osteoporosis as a major health problem, the perception of the effectiveness of osteoporosis medications, and the fear of adverse effects with osteoporosis medications. RESULTS A review of the literature confirmed what is routinely observed in clinical practice-that media report can strongly influence the level of awareness of osteoporosis and fracture risk. Inadequate and/or incorrect information on osteoporosis in the media are associated with a low level of awareness of the disease. High-risk patients may have a poor understanding of the need for treatment. Alarming information in the media over the last 2 decades regarding effectiveness and safety of long-term osteoporosis treatment is associated with reduction in the use of osteoporosis medications. CONCLUSIONS There is a gap between the application of clinical recommendations and patient perceptions of osteoporosis and its treatment. There is a need for better education of patients and practitioners aimed at recognizing the serious consequences of fractures and understanding the expected benefits and potential risks of treatment. Media reports that disseminate evidence-based information on the balance of benefits and risks could help to reduce the osteoporosis treatment gap and mitigate the crisis in osteoporosis care.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This prospective and multi-centric study assessed the lacking of pattern in fractured patients and features of vertebral fractures in postmenopausal black women living in central Africa. INTRODUCTION Patients with osteoporosis commonly collapsed their vertebral body. This has been widely studied in Caucasians, Asians, and Americans and studies in black African are lacking. Our study was designed to establish a pattern of patients with fractures and determine the features of vertebral fractures in postmenopausal black women living in Central Africa. METHODS A prospective and multi-centric study was conducted from June 2011 to June 2016, to assess the thoraco-lumbar-computed tomographic images of women. The menopausal statuses and anthropometric parameters (age, height, and weight) were collected. The body mass index and the Asset Poverty Index were evaluated. The reviews included a morphometric analysis of each vertebra that was rated according to the visual semi-quantitative system proposed by Genant et al. RESULTS Four hundred thirty women aged 47-87 years old were included in this study. The mean age was 57 years old, and the mean menopause duration was 11.45 ± 6.6 years with extremes ranging from 2 to 37 years. The body mass indices were rated as overweight and obese in 80.8% of subjects and 54, 3% had high-API indices. Among the 4730 vertebrae analyzed, 529 (11.12%) were fractured, with 68.7% exhibited a cup-shaped deformation (biconcave), 19.8% had a wedge-shaped deformation, and 11.4% exhibited a cake (crush) deformation. Of the vertebras, 88.8% were grade 0, 5.5% grade 1, 5% grade 2, and 0.57% were grade 3. Of the women, 68.8% had one vertebra fractured and 31.2% had more than one fractured vertebrae. CONCLUSION This study seemed to determine the pattern and features of vertebral fractures in black African women which may be useful for comparisons with the pattern of worldwide populations.
