Big Data Paradigm: What is the Status of Privacy and Security?

Super protective anti-bacterial coating development with silica-titania nano core-shells

In the present study, we have developed an anti-bacterial as well as mechanically-strengthened super protective coating material, which can be used as a marine antifouling paint. In this research, silica, titania and silica-titania core-shell nanoparticles were individually prepared via sol-gel and peptization processes. The idea behind the synthesis of core-shell nanoparticles was to utilize the mechanical strength of silica and the antimicrobial property of TiO₂ together. These nanoparticles were characterized via dynamic light scattering, UV-Visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Coating formulations were developed with two types of model binders, i.e., solvent-based polyurethane and water-based poly-acrylic, containing all nanoparticles individually at various concentrations for a better comparative study. These coating formulations were applied onto mild steel for anti-bacterial testing that was performed against Escherichia coli and Bacillus. The nanoparticle concentration was varied from 1% (wt) to 6% (wt). The best anti-bacterial result was obtained with 4% (wt) of silica-titania core-shell nanoparticles prepared via the peptization process among all the nanoparticles. The scratch testing was performed successfully using an Erichsen scratch tester; the formulated PU coating passed up-to 20 N load with good adhesion, impact resistance, flexibility and has shown satisfactory anti-corrosion performance.

Hidden big data analytics issues in the healthcare industry

The goal of the study was to identify big data analysis issues that can impact empirical research in the healthcare industry. To accomplish that the author analyzed big data related keywords from a literature review of peer reviewed journal articles published since 2011. Topics, methods and techniques were summarized along with strengths and weaknesses. A panel of subject matter experts was interviewed to validate the intermediate results and synthesize the key problems that would likely impact researchers conducting quantitative big data analysis in healthcare studies. The systems thinking action research method was applied to identify and describe the hidden issues. The findings were similar to the extant literature but three hidden fatal issues were detected. Methodical and statistical control solutions were proposed to overcome the three fatal healthcare big data analysis issues.

Carboxydotrophy potential of uncultivated Hydrothermarchaeota from the subseafloor crustal biosphere

The exploration of Earth's terrestrial subsurface biosphere has led to the discovery of several new archaeal lineages of evolutionary significance. Similarly, the deep subseafloor crustal biosphere also harbors many unique, uncultured archaeal taxa, including those belonging to Candidatus Hydrothermarchaeota, formerly known as Marine Benthic Group-E. Recently, Hydrothermarchaeota was identified as an abundant lineage of Juan de Fuca Ridge flank crustal fluids, suggesting its adaptation to this extreme environment. Through the investigation of single-cell and metagenome-assembled genomes, we provide insight into the lineage's evolutionary history and metabolic potential. Phylogenomic analysis reveals the Hydrothermarchaeota to be an early-branching archaeal phylum, branching between the superphylum DPANN, Euryarchaeota, and Asgard lineages. Hydrothermarchaeota genomes suggest a potential for dissimilative and assimilative carbon monoxide oxidation (carboxydotrophy), as well as sulfate and nitrate reduction. There is also a prevalence of chemotaxis and motility genes, indicating adaptive strategies for this nutrient-limited fluid-rock environment. These findings provide the first genomic interpretations of the Hydrothermarchaeota phylum and highlight the anoxic, hot, deep marine crustal biosphere as an important habitat for understanding the evolution of early life.
