Systematic review of approaches to detection and classification of skin cancer using artificial intelligence: Development and prospects

In recent years, there has been a significant improvement in the accuracy of the classification of pigmented skin lesions using artificial intelligence algorithms. Intelligent analysis and classification systems are significantly superior to visual diagnostic methods used by dermatologists and oncologists. However, the application of such systems in clinical practice is severely limited due to a lack of generalizability and risks of potential misclassification. Successful implementation of artificial intelligence-based tools into clinicopathological practice requires a comprehensive study of the effectiveness and performance of existing models, as well as further promising areas for potential research development. The purpose of this systematic review is to investigate and evaluate the accuracy of artificial intelligence technologies for detecting malignant forms of pigmented skin lesions. For the study, 10,589 scientific research and review articles were selected from electronic scientific publishers, of which 171 articles were included in the presented systematic review. All selected scientific articles are distributed according to the proposed neural network algorithms from machine learning to multimodal intelligent architectures and are described in the corresponding sections of the manuscript. This research aims to explore automated skin cancer recognition systems, from simple machine learning algorithms to multimodal ensemble systems based on advanced encoder-decoder models, visual transformers (ViT), and generative and spiking neural networks. In addition, as a result of the analysis, future directions of research, prospects, and potential for further development of automated neural network systems for classifying pigmented skin lesions are discussed.

Deep-VEGF: deep stacked ensemble model for prediction of vascular endothelial growth factor by concatenating gated recurrent unit with two-dimensional convolutional neural network

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is involved in the development and progression of various diseases, including cancer, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and arthritis. Understanding the role of VEGF in various disorders has led to the development of effective treatments, including anti-VEGF drugs, which have significantly improved therapeutic methods. Accurate VEGF identification is critical, yet experimental identification is expensive and time-consuming. This study presents Deep-VEGF, a novel computational model for VEGF prediction based on deep-stacked ensemble learning. We formulated two datasets using primary sequences. A novel feature descriptor named K-Space Tri Slicing-Bigram position-specific scoring metrix (KSTS-BPSSM) is constructed to extract numerical features from primary sequences. The model training is performed by deep learning techniques, including gated recurrent unit (GRU), generative adversarial network (GAN) and convolutional neural network (CNN). The GRU and CNN are ensembled using stacking learning approach. KSTS-BPSSM-based ensemble model secured the most accurate predictive outcomes, surpassing other competitive predictors across both training and testing datasets. This demonstrates the potential of leveraging deep learning for accurate VEGF prediction as a powerful tool to accelerate research, streamline drug discovery and uncover novel therapeutic targets. Selective quantum ensemble learning inspired by improved AdaBoost based on local sample information

In ensemble learning, random subspace technology not only easily loses some important features but also easily produces some redundant subspaces, inevitably leading to the decline of ensemble learning performance. In order to overcome the shortcomings, we propose a new selective quantum ensemble learning model inspired by improved AdaBoost based on local sample information (SELA). Firstly, SELA combines information entropy and random subspace to ensure that the important features of the classification task in each subspace are preserved. Then, we select the base classifier that can balance accuracy and diversity among a group of base classifiers generated based on local AdaBoost in each iteration. Finally, we utilize the quantum genetic algorithm to search optimal weights for base learners in the label prediction process. We use UCI datasets to analyze the impact of important parameters in SELA on classification performance and verify that SELA is usually superior to other competitive algorithms.
