Boron Nanosheet-Supported Rh Catalysts for Hydrogen Evolution: A New Territory for the Strong Metal-Support Interaction Effect

Mesoporous Hollow Carbon Sphere-Embedded MXene Architectures Decorated with Ultrafine Rh Nanocrystals toward Methanol Electrooxidation

The development of advanced Pt-alternative anode electrocatalysts with high activity and reliable stability is critical to overcoming the technical challenges of direct methanol fuel cells. Here, we propose a robust bottom-up strategy for the spatial construction of mesoporous hollow carbon sphere (HCS)-embedded MXene architectures decorated with ultrafine Rh nanocrystals (Rh/HCS-MX) via stereoscopic coassembly reactions. The rational intercalation of HCS effectively separates the MXene nanowalls to achieve a rapid mass-transfer efficiency, while the intimate coupling of the hybrid carrier with Rh nanocrystals enables their electronic structure optimization, thus contributing to strong synergistic catalytic effects. Accordingly, the resulting Rh/HCS-MX architectures exhibit outstanding methanol electrooxidation properties in terms of large electrochemical active surface areas, high mass/specific activities, and good long-term stability, all of which are significantly superior to the traditional Rh/carbon black, Rh/HCS, and Rh/MXene as well as commercial Pt/carbon balck and Pd/carbon balck electrocatalysts.

RhNi Bimetallenes with Lattice-Compressed Rh Skin towards Ultrastable Acidic Nitrate Electroreduction

Harvesting recyclable ammonia (NH3 ) from acidic nitrate (NO3 - )-containing wastewater requires the utilization of corrosion-resistant electrocatalytic materials with high activity and selectivity towards acidic electrochemical nitrate reduction (NO3 ER). Herein, ultrathin RhNi bimetallenes with Rh-skin-type structure (RhNi@Rh BMLs) are fabricated towards acidic NO3 ER. The Rh-skin atoms on the surface of RhNi@Rh BMLs experience the lattice compression-induced strain effect, resulting in shortened Rh-Rh bond and downshifted d-band center. Experimental and theoretical calculation results corroborate that Rh-skin atoms can inhibit NO2 */NH2 * adsorption-induced Rh dissolution, contributing to the exceptional electrocatalytic durability of RhNi@Rh BMLs (over 400 h) towards acidic NO3 ER. RhNi@Rh BMLs also reveal an excellent catalytic performance, boasting a 98.4% NH3 Faradaic efficiency and a 13.4 mg h-1 mgcat -1 NH3 yield. Theoretical calculations reveal that compressive stress tunes the electronic structure of Rh skin atoms, which facilitates the reduction of NO* to NOH* in NO3 ER. The practicality of RhNi@Rh BMLs has also been confirmed in an alkaline-acidic hybrid zinc-nitrate battery with a 1.39 V open circuit voltage and a 10.5 mW cm-2 power density. This work offers valuable insights into the nature of electrocatalyst deactivation behavior and guides the development of high-efficiency corrosion-resistant electrocatalysts for applications in energy and environment.

Gram-Scale Mechanochemical Synthesis of Atom-Layer MoS2 Semiconductor Electrocatalyst via Functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

The development of advanced and efficient synthetic methods is pivotal for the widespread application of 2D materials. In this study, a facile and scalable solvent-free mechanochemical approach is approached, employing graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as exfoliation agents, for the synthesis and functionalization of nearly atom-layered MoS2 nanosheets (ALMS). The resulting ALMS exhibits an ultrathin average thickness of 4 nm and demonstrates high solvent stability. The impressive yield of ALMS reached 63%, indicating its potential for scalable production of stable nanosheets. Remarkably, the ALMS catalyst exhibits excellent HER performance. Moreover, the ALMS catalyst showcases exceptional long-term durability, maintaining stable performance for nearly 200 h, underscoring its potential as a highly efficient and durable electrocatalyst. Significantly, the catalytic properties of ALMS are significantly influenced by ball milling production conditions. The GQD-assisted large-scale machinery synthesis pathway provides a promising avenue for the development of efficient and high-performance ultrathin 2D materials.

Noble Metal Phosphides: Robust Electrocatalysts toward Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Facing with serious carbon emission issues, the production of green H2 from electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has received extensive research interest. Almost all kinds of noble metal phosphides (NMPs) consisting of Pt-group elements (i.e., Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and Pt) are all highly active and pH-universal electrocatalysts toward HER. In this review, the recent progress of NMP-based HER electrocatalysts is summarized. It is further take typical examples for discussing important impact factors on the HER performance of NMPs, including crystalline phase, morphology, noble metal element and doping. Moreover, the synthesis and HER application of hybrid catalysts consisting of NMPs and other materials such as transition metal phosphides, oxides, sulfides and phosphates, carbon materials and noble metals is also reviewed. Reducing the use of noble metal is the key idea for NMP-based hybrid electrocatalysts, while the expanded functionality and structure-performance relationship are also noticed in this part. At last, the potential opportunities and challenges for this kind of highly active catalyst is discussed.

Self-evolved BOx anchored on Mg2B2O5 crystallites for high-performance oxidative dehydrogenation of propane

Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) is a promising process for producing propene. Recently, some boron-based catalysts have exhibited excellent olefin selectivity in ODHP. However, their complex synthetic routes and poor stability under high-temperature reaction conditions have hindered their practical application. Herein, we report a self-evolution method rather than conventional assembly approaches to acquire structures with excellent stability under a high propane conversion, from a single precursor-MgB2. The catalyst feasibly prepared and optimized exhibited a striking performance: 60% propane conversion with a 43.2% olefin yield at 535°C. The BOx corona pinned by the strong interaction with the borate enabled zero loss of the high conversion (around 40%) and olefins selectivity (above 80%) for over 100 h at 520°C. This all-in-one strategy of deriving all the necessary components from just one raw chemical provides a new way to synthesize effective and economic catalysts for potential industrial implementation.

Rh-dispersed Cu nanowire catalyst for boosting electrocatalytic hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Electrocatalytic conversion of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) presents a compelling strategy for the production of premium chemicals via the utilization of renewable energy sources. Exploring efficient catalytic systems to obtain highly selective BHMF has remained a giant challenge. A design strategy is proposed here to regulate active hydrogen (Hads) production in rhodium (Rh) nanoparticles grown on Cu nanowires (RhCu NWs) catalyst, which achieves a faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92.6% in the electrocatalytic reduction of HMF to BHMF at -20 mA cm-2 with no degradation in performance after 8 cycles. Kinetic investigations and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy reveal that the incorporation of Rh accelerates the water dissociation and facilitates the generation of Hads. In situ attenuated total reflection surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) further demonstrates that the Rh component boosts the proportion of ordered weakly hydrogen-bonded water molecules on the catalyst surface, which is much easier to dissociate. The construction of an interfacial Hads-rich environment promotes the HMF intermediates binding with Hads to BMHF, thereby suppressing the formation of undesired dimers. This work demonstrates the promise of altering the interfacial water environment as a strategy to boost the electrosynthetic properties of biomass-derived products toward value-added outcomes.

Graphene Quantum Dot-Mediated Atom-Layer Semiconductor Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution

The hydrogen evolution reaction performance of semiconducting 2H-phase molybdenum disulfide (2H-MoS2) presents a significant hurdle in realizing its full potential applications. Here, we utilize theoretical calculations to predict possible functionalized graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which can enhance HER activity of bulk MoS2. Subsequently, we design a functionalized GQD-induced in-situ bottom-up strategy to fabricate near atom-layer 2H-MoS2 nanosheets mediated with GQDs (ALQD) by modulating the concentration of electron withdrawing/donating functional groups. Experimental results reveal that the introduction of a series of functionalized GQDs during the synthesis of ALQD plays a crucial role. Notably, the higher the concentration and strength of electron-withdrawing functional groups on GQDs, the thinner and more active the resulting ALQD are. Remarkably, the synthesized near atom-layer ALQD-SO3 demonstrate significantly improved HER performance. Our GQD-induced strategy provides a simple and efficient approach for expanding the catalytic application of MoS2. Furthermore, it holds substantial potential for developing nanosheets in other transition-metal dichalcogenide materials.

Oxygen Vacancies Defective La2Ti2O7 Nanosheets Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Hydrogen Evolution under Visible Light Irradiation

A novel and efficient technique has been designed for the creation of oxygen vacancies on La2Ti2O7 (LTO) nanosheets. This is achieved via a controlled solid-state reaction between NaBH4 and LTO nanosheets. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses expose that these processed LTO specimens possess a unique crystalline core/amorphous shell structure, represented as La2Ti2O7@La2Ti2O7-x. According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) observations, there is a notable correlation between the reaction time, temperature, and the concentration of oxygen vacancies. The concentration of these vacancies tends to increase along with the reaction time and temperature. Concurrently, UV-Visible spectra and photocatalytic tests reveal a significant impact of oxygen vacancies on the LTO surface on both light absorption and photocatalytic functionality. Most notably, the LTO nanosheets with engineered oxygen vacancies have demonstrated an exceptional photocatalytic capacity for hydrogen production under visible light. The maximal activity recorded was an impressive 149 μmol g-1 h-1, which is noticeably superior to the performance of the pristine La2Ti2O7.

Self-Accommodation Induced Electronic Metal-Support Interaction on Ruthenium Site for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Tuning the metal-support interaction of supported metal catalysts has been found to be the most effective approach to modulating electronic structure and improving catalytic performance. But practical understanding of the charge transfer mechanism at the electronic level of catalysis process has remained elusive. Here, it is reported that ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles can self-accommodate into Fe₃ O₄ and carbon support (Ru-Fe₃ O₄ /C) through the electronic metal-support interaction, resulting in robust catalytic activity toward the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Spectroscopic evidence and theoretical calculations demonstrate that electronic perturbation occurred in the Ru-Fe₃ O₄ /C, and that charge redistribution directly influenced adsorption behavior during the catalytic process. The RuO bond formed by orbital mixing changes the charge state of the surface Ru site, enabling more electrons to flow to H intermediates (H^* ) for favorable adsorption. The weak binding strength of the RuO bond also reinforces the anti-bonding character of H* with a more favorable recombination of H* species into H₂ molecules. Because of this satisfactory catalytic mechanism, the Ru-Fe₃ O₄ /C supported nanoparticle catalyst demonstrated better HER activity and robust stability than the benchmark commercial Pt/C benchmark in alkaline media.

Alloying Pt into Ni partially amorphous for promoted alkaline hydrogen production

Aiming at the sluggish water dissociation step in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the platinum-nickel alloy material (PtNi₁₀/C) featuring unique crystalline/amorphous structure supported on carbon black is deliberately designed and fabricated via a reversely rapid co-precipitation and mild thermal reduction strategy. Electrochemical results show that only 66 mV of overpotential is needed for PtNi₁₀/C to drive a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at a lower platinum loading (8.3 μg_Pt cm-2 geo), which is much lower than that of other catalysts with a single metal source(S-Ni/C and S-Pt/C) and even the commercial Pt/C catalyst (20 wt%). The target catalyst also exhibits smaller tafel slope value (16.73 mV dec^-1) and electrochemical impedance value, enabling a fast kinetics rate for water dissociation. Partial crystallization facilitates moderate adsorption of intermediates, while the high-valence Ni(II) and Pt(II) species serve as pivotal driving force for the kinetic dissociation of water. The unique microstructure of PtNi₁₀/C shows a remarkable advantage toward HER in alkaline but acidic medium. In addition, other transition metal-based catalysts following the similar protocol are also fabricated and present varying degrees of HER performance. Hence, the facile and rapid co-precipitation/thermal reduction strategy proposed in this study provides some guidelines for designing high-efficiency alkaline HER catalysts.

Facet Engineering of Advanced Electrocatalysts Toward Hydrogen/Oxygen Evolution Reactions

The crystal facets featured with facet-dependent physical and chemical properties can exhibit varied electrocatalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) attributed to their anisotropy. The highly active exposed crystal facets enable increased mass activity of active sites, lower reaction energy barriers, and enhanced catalytic reaction rates for HER and OER. The formation mechanism and control strategy of the crystal facet, significant contributions as well as challenges and perspectives of facet-engineered catalysts for HER and OER are provided.

The electrocatalytic water splitting technology can generate high-purity hydrogen without emitting carbon dioxide, which is in favor of relieving environmental pollution and energy crisis and achieving carbon neutrality. Electrocatalysts can effectively reduce the reaction energy barrier and increase the reaction efficiency. Facet engineering is considered as a promising strategy in controlling the ratio of desired crystal planes on the surface. Owing to the anisotropy, crystal planes with different orientations usually feature facet-dependent physical and chemical properties, leading to differences in the adsorption energies of oxygen or hydrogen intermediates, and thus exhibit varied electrocatalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this review, a brief introduction of the basic concepts, fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanisms as well as key evaluating parameters for both HER and OER are provided. The formation mechanisms of the crystal facets are comprehensively overviewed aiming to give scientific theory guides to realize dominant crystal planes. Subsequently, three strategies of selective capping agent, selective etching agent, and coordination modulation to tune crystal planes are comprehensively summarized. Then, we present an overview of significant contributions of facet-engineered catalysts toward HER, OER, and overall water splitting. In particular, we highlight that density functional theory calculations play an indispensable role in unveiling the structure–activity correlation between the crystal plane and catalytic activity. Finally, the remaining challenges in facet-engineered catalysts for HER and OER are provided and future prospects for designing advanced facet-engineered electrocatalysts are discussed.

Waste-Derived Catalysts for Water Electrolysis: Circular Economy-Driven Sustainable Green Hydrogen Energy

The sustainable production of green hydrogen via water electrolysis necessitates cost-effective electrocatalysts. By following the circular economy principle, the utilization of waste-derived catalysts significantly promotes the sustainable development of green hydrogen energy. Currently, diverse waste-derived catalysts have exhibited excellent catalytic performance toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and overall water electrolysis (OWE). Herein, we systematically examine recent achievements in waste-derived electrocatalysts for water electrolysis. The general principles of water electrolysis and design principles of efficient electrocatalysts are discussed, followed by the illustration of current strategies for transforming wastes into electrocatalysts. Then, applications of waste-derived catalysts (i.e., carbon-based catalysts, transitional metal-based catalysts, and carbon-based heterostructure catalysts) in HER, OER, and OWE are reviewed successively. An emphasis is put on correlating the catalysts' structure-performance relationship. Also, challenges and research directions in this booming field are finally highlighted. This review would provide useful insights into the design, synthesis, and applications of waste-derived electrocatalysts, and thus accelerate the development of the circular economy-driven green hydrogen energy scheme.

Inner Co Synergizing Outer Ru Supported on Carbon Nanotubes for Efficient pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis

Exploring highly active but inexpensive electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of critical importance for hydrogen production from electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we report a multicomponent catalyst with exceptional activity and durability for HER, in which cobalt nanoparticles were in-situ confined inside bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) while ultralow ruthenium loading (~ 2.6 µg per electrode area ~ cm^-2) is uniformly deposited on their exterior walls (Co@CNTsǀRu). The atomic-scale structural investigations and theoretical calculations indicate that the confined inner Co and loaded outer Ru would induce charge redistribution and a synergistic electron coupling, not only optimizing the adsorption energy of H intermediates (ΔG_H*) but also facilitating the electron/mass transfer. The as-developed Co@CNTsǀRu composite catalyst requires overpotentials of only 10, 32, and 63 mV to afford a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in alkaline, acidic and neutral media, respectively, representing top-level catalytic activity among all reported HER catalysts. The current work may open a new insight into the rational design of carbon-supported metal catalysts for practical applications.

Monoelemental two-dimensional boron nanomaterials beyond theoretical simulations: From experimental preparation, functionalized modification to practical applications

During the past decade, there is an explosive growth of theoretical and computational studies on 2D boron-based nanomaterials. In terms of extensive predictions from theoretical simulations, borophene, boron nanosheets and 2D boron derivatives show excellent structural, electronic, photonic and nonlinear optical characteristics, and potential applications in a wide range of fields. In recent years, previous studies have reported the successful experimental preparations, superior properties, multi-functionalized modifications of various 2D boron and its derivatives, which show many practical applications in significant fields. To further promote the ever-increasing experimental studies, this present review systematically summarizes recent progress on experimental preparation methods, functionalized modification strategies and practical applications of 2D boron-based nanomaterials and multifunctional derivatives. Firstly, this review summarizes the experimental preparation methods, including molecular beam epitaxy, chemical vapor deposition, liquid-phase exfoliation, chemical reaction, and other auxiliary methods. Then, various strategies for functionalized modification are introduced overall, focusing on borophene derivatives, boron-based nanosheets, atom-introduced, chemically-functionalized borophene and boron nanosheets, borophene or boron nanosheet-based heterostructures, and other functionalized 2D boron nanomaterials. Subsequently, various potential applications are discussed in detail, involving energy storage, catalysis conversion, photonics, optoelectronics, sensors, bio-imaging, biomedicine therapy, and adsorption. We comment the state-of-the-art related studies concisely, and also discuss the current status, probable challenges and perspectives rationally. This review is timely, comprehensive, in-depth and highly attractive for scientists from multiple disciplines and scientific fields, and can facilitate further development of advanced functional low-dimensional nanomaterials and multi-functionalized systems toward high-performance practical applications in significant fields.

Three-Phase Heterojunction NiMo-Based Nano-Needle for Water Splitting at Industrial Alkaline Condition

Constructing heterojunction is an effective strategy to develop high-performance non-precious-metal-based catalysts for electrochemical water splitting (WS). Herein, we design and prepare an N-doped-carbon-encapsulated Ni/MoO₂ nano-needle with three-phase heterojunction (Ni/MoO₂@CN) for accelerating the WS under industrial alkaline condition. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the electrons are redistributed at the three-phase heterojunction interface, which optimizes the adsorption energy of H- and O-containing intermediates to obtain the best ΔG_H* for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and decrease the ΔG value of rate-determining step for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), thus enhancing the HER/OER catalytic activity. Electrochemical results confirm that Ni/MoO₂@CN exhibits good activity for HER (ƞ_-10 = 33 mV, ƞ_-1000 = 267 mV) and OER (ƞ₁₀ = 250 mV, ƞ₁₀₀₀ = 420 mV). It shows a low potential of 1.86 V at 1000 mA cm^-2 for WS in 6.0 M KOH solution at 60 °C and can steadily operate for 330 h. This good HER/OER performance can be attributed to the three-phase heterojunction with high intrinsic activity and the self-supporting nano-needle with more active sites, faster mass diffusion, and bubbles release. This work provides a unique idea for designing high efficiency catalytic materials for WS.

Constructing 1D Boron Chains in the Structure of Transition Metal Monoborides for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

The forms of boron atoms are many and varied in the structure of transition metal borides (TMBs). The form of boron atoms determines the structure, morphology, and properties of borides. Herein, transition metal monoborides (CrB and WB) with different arrangement of one-dimensional (1D) boron chains were synthesized under high pressures and high temperatures. The 1D boron chains between the interlayers of CrB are parallel to one another, while the 1D boron chains between the interlayers of WB are perpendicular to one another. The morphologies of CrB and WB also show large differences due to the difference in 1D boron chain arrangement. As electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs), CrB and WB show good catalysis activity and durability. WB has the smallest overpotential (210 mV) and Tafel slope (90.09 mV dec−1), which is mainly attributed to the intercrossing boron chains improving the electrical properties of WB, as well as the 5d electrons of W being more chemically active. The TOF value of WB is 1.35 s−1, proving that WB has a higher intrinsic catalytic activity during HERs. This work provides a data reference for the development of high-efficiency electrocatalysts.
