Improved Plasmonic Hot-Electron Capture in Au Nanoparticle/Polymeric Carbon Nitride by Pt Single Atoms for Broad-Spectrum Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Correlation between existential form of ruthenium cocatalyst and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of carbon nitride

Catalysts composed of nanocluster and single-atom (SA) were extensively used to enhance electrocatalytic water splitting performance, whereas study of their photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution activity was limited. Herein, carbon nitride (CN) decorated by ruthenium (Ru) cocatalysts existed as SA + cluster, cluster + nanoparticles (NPs), and NPs were prepared by impregnation and calcination processes. The correlation between existential form, content of Ru cocatalyst and H2 evolution rate were carefully discussed. It was found that Ru NPs were favor for water molecule adsorption, whereas Ru SAs and clusters facilitated H2 desorption. Theoretical calculations revealed that Ru clusters + NPs cocatalyst were beneficial for H* intermediate formation. Water splitting tests found that 1.07 wt% Ru NPs + cluster modified CN showed the highest H2 evolution rate of 13.64 mmol h-1 g-1, which was 266.4 and 1.5 times higher than those of CN and Ru NPs (2.33 wt%) decorated CN, respectively. This work deeply reveals the influences of existential form of Ru cocatalysts on photocatalytic water splitting of CN, and provides thought in designing new cocatalysts to largely enhance H2 evolution.

In situ growth of Mn3O4 nanoparticles on accordion-like Ti3C2Tx MXene for advanced aqueous Zn-Ion batteries

Manganese-based cathodes are competitive candidates for state-of-the-art aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) because of their easy preparation method, sufficient nature reserve, and environmental friendliness. However, their poor cycle stability and low rate performance have prevented them from practical applications. In this study, Mn3O4 nanoparticles were formed in situ on the surface and between the interlayers of Ti3C2Tx MXene, which was pretreated by the intercalation of K+ ions. Ti3C2Tx MXene not only provides abundant active sites and high conductivity but also hinders the structural damage of Mn3O4 during charging and discharging. Benefiting from the well-designed K-Ti3C2@Mn3O4 structure, the battery equipped with the K-Ti3C2@Mn3O4 cathode achieved a maximum specific capacity of 312 mAh/g at a current density of 0.3 A/g and carried a specific capacity of approximately 120 mAh/g at a current density of 1 A/g, which remained stable for approximately 500 cycles. The performance surpasses that of most reported Mn3O4-based cathodes. This study pioneers a new approach for building better cathode materials for AZIBs.

Mechanistic insight into the synergy between platinum cluster and indium particle dual cocatalysts for enhanced photocatalytic water splitting

Photocatalytic H2 production is envisioned as a promising pillar of sustainable energy conversion system to address the energy crisis and environmental issues but still challenging. Herein, a strategy is proposed to design a dual-metal cocatalysts consisting of Pt nanoclusters (Pt NCs) and In nanoparticles (In NPs) anchored on polymeric carbon nitride (Pt-In/CN) for boosting photocatalytic water splitting. As expected, the designed Pt-In/CN photocatalyst exhibits an impressive H2 production rate of 6.49 mmol·h-1·g-1 with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 33.56 % at 400 nm, which is 2.8- and 11.2-fold higher than those of the Pt/CN and In/CN, respectively. Combining experimental characterization with theoretical calculation demonstrates the synergistic mechanisms underpinning the enhanced photocatalytic activity. The Pt NCs and In NPs serve as photogenerated electron and hole trapping sites, respectively, which achieves the spatial separation of charge carriers and induces the polarized surface charge distribution, thus fostering optimal adsorption behavior of intermediates. More importantly, the p-block In NPs modulate the electronic microenvironment of Pt NCs to attenuate the adsorption behavior of H* intermediates for accelerated H2 evolution kinetics. This work unveils a versatile strategy to regulate the electronic structures of dual-metal sites with synergy by establishing charge transfer mechanism for dual-metal cocatalysts.

Plasmonic Pt-PPCN/TiN Ohmic Junction for Photo-Thermo Catalytic Hydrogen Production

The rational design of photocatalysts for improving the conversion of solar energy into hydrogen is a promising route for achieving carbon neutrality. Herein, we couple plasmonic titanium nitride (TiN) with highly crystalline potassium-doped polymeric carbon nitride (PPCN) to construct a PPCN/TiN ohmic junction. Such an ohmic junction not only broadens the absorption spectrum but also inhibits the recombination of electrons and holes. In addition, Pt nanoparticles are introduced into this ohmic junction to form plasmonic Pt-PPCN/TiN, improving the capture of hot electrons generated by TiN and thereby promoting the dissociation of the O-H bond in H2O. The energy barrier decreases from 0.7 to 0.2 eV. Enhanced separation of carrier, activation of water molecules, and capture of hot electrons are jointly promoting photo-thermo catalytic hydrogen production. Therefore, under full-spectrum irradiation, the hydrogen production rate of Pt-PPCN/TiN reaches 19 085 μmol g-1 h-1. This novel plasmonic photocatalyst is promising for full-spectrum photo-thermo catalytic hydrogen production.

Decade Milestone Advancement of Defect-Engineered g-C3N4 for Solar Catalytic Applications

Over the past decade, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has emerged as a universal photocatalyst toward various sustainable carbo-neutral technologies. Despite solar applications discrepancy, g-C3N4 is still confronted with a general fatal issue of insufficient supply of thermodynamically active photocarriers due to its inferior solar harvesting ability and sluggish charge transfer dynamics. Fortunately, this could be significantly alleviated by the "all-in-one" defect engineering strategy, which enables a simultaneous amelioration of both textural uniqueness and intrinsic electronic band structures. To this end, we have summarized an unprecedently comprehensive discussion on defect controls including the vacancy/non-metallic dopant creation with optimized electronic band structure and electronic density, metallic doping with ultra-active coordinated environment (M-Nx, M-C2N2, M-O bonding), functional group grafting with optimized band structure, and promoted crystallinity with extended conjugation π system with weakened interlayered van der Waals interaction. Among them, the defect states induced by various defect types such as N vacancy, P/S/halogen dopants, and cyano group in boosting solar harvesting and accelerating photocarrier transfer have also been emphasized. More importantly, the shallow defect traps identified by femtosecond transient absorption spectra (fs-TAS) have also been highlighted. It is believed that this review would pave the way for future readers with a unique insight into a more precise defective g-C3N4 "customization", motivating more profound thinking and flourishing research outputs on g-C3N4-based photocatalysis.

Exploring the Roles of Single Atom in Hydrogen Peroxide Photosynthesis

This comprehensive review provides a deep exploration of the unique roles of single atom catalysts (SACs) in photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. SACs offer multiple benefits over traditional catalysts such as improved efficiency, selectivity, and flexibility due to their distinct electronic structure and unique properties. The review discusses the critical elements in the design of SACs, including the choice of metal atom, host material, and coordination environment, and how these elements impact the catalytic activity. The role of single atoms in photocatalytic H2O2 production is also analysed, focusing on enhancing light absorption and charge generation, improving the migration and separation of charge carriers, and lowering the energy barrier of adsorption and activation of reactants. Despite these advantages, several challenges, including H2O2 decomposition, stability of SACs, unclear mechanism, and low selectivity, need to be overcome. Looking towards the future, the review suggests promising research directions such as direct utilization of H2O2, high-throughput synthesis and screening, the creation of dual active sites, and employing density functional theory for investigating the mechanisms of SACs in H2O2 photosynthesis. This review provides valuable insights into the potential of single atom catalysts for advancing the field of photocatalytic H2O2 production.

An updated overview of some factors that influence the biological effects of nanoparticles

Nanoparticles (NPs) can be extremely effective in the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer due to their properties. The nanotechnology industry is developing rapidly. The number of multifunctional NPs has increased in the market and hundreds of NPs are in various stages of preclinical and clinical development. Thus, the mechanism underlying the effects of NPs on biological systems has received much attention. After NPs enter the body, they interact with plasma proteins, tumour cell receptors, and small biological molecules. This interaction is closely related to the size, shape, chemical composition and surface modification properties of NPs. In this review, the effects of the size, shape, chemical composition and surface modification of NPs on the biological effects of NPs were summarised, including the mechanism through which NPs enter cells, the resulting oxidative stress response, and the interaction with proteins. This review of the biological effects of NPs can not only provide theoretical support for the preparation of safer and more efficient NPs but also lay the foundation for their clinical application.
