Recent Advances in Clusteroluminescence

Ultralong luminescence lifetime imaging of edible plant tissue for humidity sensing in food packaging by a smartphone

The safety of luminescence sensors and probes used in food packaging should be seriously considered, while most luminescence sensors were artificially synthesized with unclear toxicity, and cannot be directly used as indicators that were in contact with food. To overcome this problem, a humidity indicator based on an edible plant tissue was developed without any chemical processing. We found that garlic bulbs could emit significant persistent luminescence after drying at room temperature. The luminescence lifetime decreases from hundreds of milliseconds to tens of milliseconds as humidity increases. The long-lived luminescence could easily be detected through smartphones without any sophisticated instruments. The edible garlic is expected to be used as a humidity indicator in food packaging without worrying about food safety. Furthermore, the interference of scattered light and short-lived fluorescence from foods and packages can be eliminated in time-resolved luminescence imaging, greatly increasing the signal-to-noise ratio.

ε-Poly-l-lysine: A Naturally Occurring Biodegradable Polypeptide for Selective Detection of 5-Nitroimidazole Antibiotics in Animal Products and Living Cells via Fluorescence

The 5-nitroimidazole (5-NI) class of antibiotics, such as metronidazole, ornidazole, secnidazole, and tinidazole, are widely used to prevent bacterial infection in humans and livestock industries. However, their overuse contaminates the farmed animal products and water bodies. Hence, a selective, sensitive, and cost-effective method to detect 5-NI antibiotics is the need of the hour. Herein, we report a rapid, inexpensive, and efficient sensing system to detect 5-NI drugs using an as-prepared solution of ε-poly-l-lysine (ε-PL), a naturally occurring and biodegradable homopolypeptide that has an intrinsic fluorescence via clustering-triggered emission. The low nanomolar detection limit (3.25-3.97 nM) for the aforementioned representative 5-NI drugs highlights the sensitivity of the system, outperforming most of the reported sensors alike. The resulting fluorescence quenching was found to be static in nature. Importantly, excellent recovery (100.26-104.41%) was obtained for all real samples and animal products tested. Visual detection was demonstrated by using paper strips and silica gel for practical applications. Furthermore, ε-PL could detect 5-NI antibiotics in living 3T3-L1 mouse fibroblast cells via cellular imaging. Taken together, the present work demonstrates the detection of 5-NI antibiotics using a biocompatible natural polypeptide, ε-PL, and represents a simple and inexpensive analytical tool for practical application.

Recent Progress in Nonconventional Luminescent Macromolecules and their Applications

Traditional π-conjugated luminescent macromolecules typically suffer from aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) and high cytotoxicity, and they require complex synthetic processes. In contrast, nonconventional luminescent macromolecules (NCLMs) with nonconjugated structures possess excellent biocompatibility, ease of preparation, unique luminescence behavior, and emerging applications in optoelectronics, biology, and medicine. NCLMs are currently believed to produce inherent luminescence due to through-space conjugation of overlapping electron orbitals in solid/aggregate states. However, as experimental facts continue to exceed expectations or even overturn some previous assumptions, there is still controversy about the detailed luminous mechanism of NCLMs, and extensive studies are needed to further explore the mechanism. This Perspective highlights recent progress in NCLMs and classifies and summarizes these advances from the viewpoint of molecular design, mechanism exploration, applications, and challenges and prospects. The aim is to provide guidance and inspiration for the huge fundamental and practical potential of NCLMs.

Cluster-Triggered Self-Luminescence, Rapid Self-Healing, and Adaptive Reprogramming Liquid Crystal Elastomers Enabled by Dynamic Imine Bond

The integration of advanced functions and diverse practical applications calls for multifunctional liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs); however, the structure-intrinsic luminescence and excellent mechanical properties of LCEs have not yet been explored. In this study, clusteroluminescence (CL)-based LCEs (CL-LCEs) are successfully fabricated without depending on large conjugated structures, thereby avoiding redundant organic synthesis and aggregation-caused quenching. The experimental and theoretical results reveal that secondary amine (-NH-) and imine (-C = N-) groups play vital roles in determining the presence of fluorescence in CL-LCEs. Based on the above observation, the strategy universalization and a molecular library for constructing CL-LCEs are further demonstrated. Meanwhile, the dynamic bond of imine bonds endows the CL-LCE system with rapid self-healing under mild conditions (70 °C in 10 min), excellent stretchability, and adaptive programmable characteristics. Furthermore, the self-luminescent performance enables visual detection of the self-healing process. Finally, CL-based information storage and anticounterfeiting are successfully realized and their applications in fiber actuators and fluorescent textiles are demonstrated. The distinctive luminescence and dynamic chemistry presented in this work has significant implications in elucidating the mechanism of CL and providing new strategies for the rational design of novel multifunctional LCE materials.

Chirality-Regulated Clusteroluminescence in Polypeptides

The low emission efficiency of clusteroluminogens restricts their practical applications in the fields of sensors and biological imaging. In this work, the clusteroluminescence of ordered/disordered polypeptides was observed, and the photoluminescence (PL) intensity of polypeptides can be modulated by the chirality of amino acid residues. Polyglutamates with different chiral compositions were synthesized, and the racemic polypeptides exhibited a significantly higher PL intensity than the enantiopure ones. This emission originates from the n-π* transition between C═O groups of polypeptides and is enhanced by clusterization of polypeptides. CD and Fourier transform infrared spectra demonstrated that the enantiopure and racemic polypeptides form α-helix and random coil structures, respectively. The disordered polypeptides can form more chain entanglements and interchain interactions because of their high flexibility, leading to more clusterizations and stronger PL intensity. The rigidity of ordered helical structures restrains the chain entanglements, and the formation of intrachain hydrogen bonds between amide groups of the backbone impairs the interchain interaction between polypeptides, resulting in lower PL intensity. The PL intensity of the polypeptides can also be manipulated by the addition of urea or trifluoroacetic acid. Our study not only elucidates the chirality/order-based structure-property relationship of clusteroluminescence in peptide-based polymers but also offers implications for the rational design of fluorescent peptides/proteins.

Amphiphilic Polyurethane with Cluster-Induced Emission for Multichannel Bioimaging in Living Cell Systems

The development of single-component materials with low cytotoxicity and multichannel fluorescence imaging capability is a research hotspot. In the present work, highly electron-deficient pyrazine monomers were covalently connected into a polyurethane backbone using addition polymerization with terminal poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether units containing a high density of electron pairs. Thereby, an amphiphilic polyurethane-pyrazine (PUP) derivative has been synthesized. The polymer displays cluster-induced emission through compact inter- and/or intramolecular noncovalent interactions and extensive through-space electron coupling and delocalization. Molecular rigidity facilitates red-shifted emission. Based on hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions and excitation dependence emission at low concentrations, PUP has been self-assembled into fluorescent nanoparticles (PUP NPs) without additional surfactant. PUP NPs have been used for cellular multicolor imaging to provide a variety of switchable colors on demand. This work provides a simple molecular design for environmentally sustainable, luminescent materials with excellent photophysical properties, biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and color modulation.

Exploring the potential of cellulose autofluorescence for optical detection of tannin in red wines

The growing demand for opto-electronic devices within an automated landscape has opened up new opportunities for harnessing sustainable cellulose materials for sensors technology. Cellulose, a versatile material, enables its combination with other materials, but in most of these applications, cellulose is typically employed as support or substrate, while its inherent autofluorescence remains largely underexplored for sensors. In light of this context, this study delves into the autofluorescence characteristics of pristine cellulose nanocrystals extracted from wood via enzymatic route for optical sensors tailored to detect tannins. By fine-tuning the experimental setup, photoluminescence (PL) emission bands were scrutinized across three distinct spectral regions, namely 300-400 nm, 400-500 nm and 550-700 nm. The proposed mechanism reveals the occurrence of dynamic fluorescence quenching, which enabled the selective monitoring of tannins in red wines across a dynamic range spanning from 10 to 1060 μg mL-1. This sensing platform provided a limit of detection (LoD) of 6.1 μg mL-1. Notably, the sensing platform's efficacy was validated with remarkable recovery rates of 99.7 % and 95.3 % when subjected to testing with cabernet sauvignon and tannat wines. These findings emphasize the sensing platform's potential for monitoring tannic acids in beverages and food products.

Recent progress on polymerization-induced emission

The aggregate luminescence behaviors of polymeric luminescent materials have been attracting great attention. However, the importance of the polymerization process on luminescence, namely, polymerization-induced emission (PIE), has rarely been overviewed. In this review, recent advances in polymerization with PIE effects are summarized, including PIE with aromatic rings based on one-/two-/multi-component polymerizations, and PIE without aromatic rings according to disparate mechanisms of polymerizations. Typical examples are selected to elaborate the basic design principles, as well as the properties and potential applications of the luminous polymers. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in this area are also discussed.

Thiophene End-Functionalized Oligo-(D,L-Lactide) as a New Electroactive Macromonomer for the "Hairy-Rod" Type Conjugated Polymers Synthesis

The development of the modern society imposes a fast-growing demand for new advanced functional polymer materials. To this aim, one of the most plausible current methodologies is the end-group functionalization of existing conventional polymers. If the end functional group is able to polymerize, this method enables the synthesis of a molecularly complex, grafted architecture that opens the access to a wider range of material properties, as well as tailoring the special functions required for certain applications. In this context, the present paper reports on α-thienyl-ω-hydroxyl-end-groups functionalized oligo-(D,L-lactide) (Th-PDLLA), which was designed to combine the polymerizability and photophysical properties of thiophene with the biocompatibility and biodegradability of poly-(D,L-lactide). Th-PDLLA was synthesized using the path of "functional initiator" in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of (D,L)-lactide, assisted by stannous 2-ethyl hexanoate (Sn(oct)₂). The results of NMR and FT-IR spectroscopic methods confirmed the Th-PDLLA's expected structure, while the oligomeric nature of Th-PDLLA, as resulting from the calculations based on ¹H-NMR data, is supported by the findings from gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and by the results of the thermal analyses. The behavior of Th-PDLLA in different organic solvents, evaluated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, but also by dynamic light scattering (DLS), suggested the presence of colloidal supramolecular structures, underlining the nature of the macromonomer Th-PDLLA as an "shape amphiphile". To test its functionality, the ability of Th-PDLLA to work as a building block for the synthesis of molecular composites was demonstrated by photoinduced oxidative homopolymerization in the presence of diphenyliodonium salt (DPI). The occurrence of a polymerization process, with the formation of a thiophene-conjugated oligomeric main chain grafted with oligomeric PDLLA, was proven, in addition to the visual changes, by the results of GPC, ¹H-NMR, FT-IR, UV-vis and fluorescence measurements.

Polymerization boosting cascade energy transfer based on opened glucopyranosyl β-cyclodextrin

An injectable polysaccharide supramolecular hydrogel was successfully fabricated from opened D-glucopyranosyl β-cyclodextrin with four aldehyde groups (ACD) cross-linked with biomacromolecule chitosan (CS), which was not only beneficial to the clustering-triggered emission of CS with high quantum yield (32.25%), but also could co-assemble with a first stage acceptor triphenylamine derivative (TPA) and encapsulate Cyanine 5 (Cy5) or Nile blue (NiB) achieving supramolecular cascade energy transfer from the cross-linked polymer to the dyes, leading to fluorescence emission at 673 nm or 680 nm, and could be further applied in cell imaging.

Autofluorescence spectroscopy for quantitative analysis of cellulose nanocrystals

The ability to determine the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles, such as cellulose nanocrystals, in suspension is critically important to maximize their potential. Currently, various techniques are required to ascertain different properties, which results in a laborious analysis procedure. Here, autofluorescence arising from the cluster-triggered emission (CTE) photoluminescence mechanism is utilized as an analytical spectroscopic tool to determine multiple properties from one data acquisition sequence. This study confirms that key properties - including the nanoparticle concentration in suspension, the critical concentration for liquid crystal formation, and the surface charge content - can be obtained simultaneously. Measured values are accurate to within 10% of conventional techniques with average residual errors of 0.4 wt% for the critical concentration, and 11 mmol kg^-1 CNC for the surface charge content. This charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor-based methodology is rapid and does not require the addition of further chemicals. These results support the theory behind CTE and represent a new opportunity for quantitatively analysing non-aromatic, heteroatom-containing nanoparticles in flow based on understanding their inter- and intra-particle interactions.

Thiophene α-Chain-End-Functionalized Oligo(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) as Precursor Amphiphilic Macromonomer for Grafted Conjugated Oligomers/Polymers and as a Multifunctional Material with Relevant Properties for Biomedical Applications

Because the combination of π-conjugated polymers with biocompatible synthetic counterparts leads to the development of bio-relevant functional materials, this paper reports a new oligo(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (OMeOx)-containing thiophene macromonomer, denoted Th-OMeOx. It can be used as a reactive precursor for synthesis of a polymerizable 2,2’-3-OMeOx-substituted bithiophene by Suzuki coupling. Also a grafted polythiophene amphiphile with OMeOx side chains was synthesized by its self-acid-assisted polymerization (SAAP) in bulk. The results showed that Th-OMeOx is not only a reactive intermediate but also a versatile functional material in itself. This is due to the presence of 2-bromo-substituted thiophene and ω-hydroxyl functional end-groups, and due to the multiple functionalities encoded in its structure (photosensitivity, water self-dispersibility, self-assembling capacity). Thus, analysis of its behavior in solvents of different selectivities revealed that Th-OMeOx forms self-assembled structures (micelles or vesicles) by “direct dissolution”.Unexpectedly, by exciting the Th-OMeOx micelles formed in water with λ_abs of the OMeOx repeating units, the intensity of fluorescence emission varied in a concentration-dependent manner.These self-assembled structures showed excitation-dependent luminescence as well. Attributed to the clusteroluminescence phenomenon due to the aggregation and through space interactions of electron-rich groups in non-conjugated, non-aromatic OMeOx, this behavior certifies that polypeptides mimic the character of Th-OMeOx as a non-conventional intrinsic luminescent material.

Secondary through-space interactions facilitated single-molecule white-light emission from clusteroluminogens

Clusteroluminogens refer to some non-conjugated molecules that show visible light and unique electronic properties with through-space interactions due to the formation of aggregates. Although mature and systematic theories of molecular photophysics have been developed to study conventional conjugated chromophores, it is still challenging to endow clusteroluminogens with designed photophysical properties by manipulating through-space interactions. Herein, three clusteroluminogens with non-conjugated donor-acceptor structures and different halide substituents are designed and synthesized. These compounds show multiple emissions and even single-molecule white-light emission in the crystalline state. The intensity ratio of these emissions is easily manipulated by changing the halide atom and excitation wavelength. Experimental and theoretical results successfully disclose the electronic nature of these multiple emissions: through-space conjugation for short-wavelength fluorescence, through-space charge transfer based on secondary through-space interactions for long-wavelength fluorescence, and room-temperature phosphorescence. The introduction of secondary through-space interactions to clusteroluminogens not only enriches their varieties of photophysical properties but also inspires the establishment of novel aggregate photophysics for clusteroluminescence.

Although mature and systematic theories of molecular photophysics have been developed, it is still challenging to endow clusteroluminogens (CLgens) with designed photophysical properties by manipulating through-space interactions. Here, the authors design three CLgens that show multiple emissions and white-light emission in the crystalline state, and emphasize the important role of secondary through-space interactions between the acceptor and non-conjugated donor units.

Through-Space Interactions in Clusteroluminescence

Conventional π-conjugated luminophores suffer from problems such as emission quenching, biotoxicity, environmental pollution, etc. The emerging nonconjugated and nonaromatic clusteroluminogens (CLgens) are expected to overcome these stubborn drawbacks, so research of CLgens shows great significance not only for practical application but also for the construction of fundamental photophysical theories. This perspective summarizes the unusual features of CLgens in comparison to traditional chromophores, such as nonconjugated molecular structures, unmatched absorption and excitation, excitation-dependent luminescence, multiple emission peaks, and room-temperature phosphorescence. Different from the theory of through-bond conjugation in π-conjugated luminophores, through-space interactions, including through-space n···n interaction and through-space n···π interaction, are regarded as the emitting sources of nonconjugated CLgens. In addition, the formation of network clusters is proposed as an efficient strategy to improve the performance of CLgens, and their potential applications of anticounterfeiting, photoelectronic devices, and bioimaging are prospected.

How to Manipulate Through-Space Conjugation and Clusteroluminescence of Simple AIEgens with Isolated Phenyl Rings

Apart from the traditional through-bond conjugation (TBC), through-space conjugation (TSC) is gradually proved as another important interaction in photophysical processes, especially for the recent observation of clusteroluminescence from nonconjugated molecules. However, unlike TBC in conjugated chromophores, it is still challenging to manipulate TSC and clusteroluminescence. Herein, simple and nonconjugated triphenylmethane (TPM) and its derivatives with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups were synthesized, and their photophysical properties were systematically studied. TPM was characterized with visible clusteroluminescence due to the intramolecular TSC. Experimental and theoretical results showed that the introduction of electron-donating groups into TPM could red-shift the wavelength and increase the efficiency of clusteroluminescence simultaneously, due to the increased electronic density and stabilization of TSC. However, TPM derivatives with electron-withdrawing groups showed inefficient or even quenched clusteroluminescence caused by the vigorous excited-state intramolecular motion and intermolecular photoinduced electron transfer process. This work provides a reliable strategy to manipulate TSC and clusteroluminescence.
