The Role of Metal Nanoparticles in Promoting Photocatalysis by TiO2

Enhanced Fatty Acid Photodecarboxylation over Bimetallic Au-Pd Core-Shell Nanoparticles Deposited on TiO2

Photodecarboxylation of biomass-derived fatty acids to alkanes offers significant potential to obtain hydrocarbons and economic benefits due to the mild conditions and high activity. Herein, the photodecarboxylation of hexanoic acid into alkanes using TiO2-supported monometallic Au or Pd and bimetallic Au-Pd catalysts is reported. It was found that bimetallic Au-Pd catalysts, featuring a core-shell structure evidenced by EDX-mapping and element line profile, show better photocatalytic performance, achieving 94.7% conversion of hexanoic acid and nearly 100% selectivity to pentane under UV-vis irradiation in the absence of H2 than the monometallic Au analogue. This remarkable enhancement in activity compared to its TiO2 supported monometallic Au or Pd analogues can be attributed to the synergistic effect between Au and Pd within the nanostructured Au(core)-Pd(shell) alloy for achieving more efficient charge-separation efficiency upon visible light excitation. This photocatalyst exhibits a wide scope converting multiple fatty acids into hydrocarbons. Moreover, it can even photocatalyze the conversion of raw bio-oils into alkanes directly. No obvious activity loss was observed during the reusability tests, demonstrating the good stability of the present catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that oxidation of carboxylates on TiO2 leads to alkyl radicals that become bound to metal nanoparticles. The superior catalytic performance of Au(core)-Pd(shell)/TiO2 is derived from the weaker adsorption for H on the alloy and the lower hydrogen evolution reaction overpotential. Our research can result in an efficient bio-oil upgrading, resulting in the synthesis of biofuels from biomass under mild conditions.

Nanomaterials Aspects for Photocatalysis as Potential for the Inactivation of COVID-19 Virus

Coronavirus disease-2019 is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and is the most difficult recent global outbreak. Semiconducting materials can be used as effective photocatalysts in photoactive technology by generating various reactive oxidative species (ROS), including superoxide (•O2−) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals, either by degradation of proteins, DNA, and RNA or by inhibition of cell development through terminating the cellular membrane. This review emphasizes the capability of photocatalysis as a reliable, economical, and fast-preferred method with high chemical and thermal stability for the deactivation and degradation of SARS-CoV-2. The light-generated holes present in the valence band (VB) have strong oxidizing properties, which result in the oxidation of surface proteins and their inactivation under light illumination. In addition, this review discusses the most recent photocatalytic systems, including metals, metal oxides, carbonaceous nanomaterials, and 2-dimensional advanced structures, for efficient SARS-CoV-2 inactivation using different photocatalytic experimental parameters. Finally, this review article summarizes the limitations of these photocatalytic approaches and provides recommendations for preserving the antiviral properties of photocatalysts, large-scale treatment, green sustainable treatment, and reducing the overall expenditure for applications.

Development of Sulfur-Doped Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Hydrogen Evolution under Visible-Light Irradiation

Developing eco-friendly strategies to produce green fuel has attracted continuous and extensive attention. In this study, a novel gas-templating method was developed to prepare 2D porous S-doped g-C₃N₄ photocatalyst through simultaneous pyrolysis of urea (main g-C₃N₄ precursor) and ammonium sulfate (sulfur source and structure promoter). Different content of ammonium sulfate was examined to find the optimal synthesis conditions and to investigate the property-governed activity. The physicochemical properties of the obtained photocatalysts were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), specific surface area (BET) measurement, ultraviolet-visible light diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV/vis DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and reversed double-beam photo-acoustic spectroscopy (RDB-PAS). The as-prepared S-doped g-C₃N₄ photocatalysts were applied for photocatalytic H₂ evolution under vis irradiation. The condition-dependent activity was probed to achieve the best photocatalytic performance. It was demonstrated that ammonium sulfate played a crucial role to achieve concurrently 2D morphology, controlled nanostructure, and S-doping of g-C₃N₄ in a one-pot process. The 2D nanoporous S-doped g-C₃N₄ of crumpled lamellar-like structure with large specific surface area (73.8 m² g^-1) and improved electron-hole separation showed a remarkable H₂ generation rate, which was almost one order in magnitude higher than that of pristine g-C₃N₄. It has been found that though all properties are crucial for the overall photocatalytic performance, efficient doping is probably a key factor for high photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the photocatalysts exhibit significant stability during recycling. Accordingly, a significant potential of S-doped g-C₃N₄ has been revealed for practical use under natural solar radiation.

Ag Nanoparticles Decorated ZnO Nanorods as Multifunctional SERS Substrates for Ultrasensitive Detection and Catalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B

Industrial wastewater containing large amounts of organic pollutants is a severe threat to the environment and human health. Thus, the rapid detection and removal of these pollutants from wastewater are essential to protect public health and the ecological environment. In this study, a multifunctional and reusable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate by growing Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on ZnO nanorods (NRs) was produced for detecting and degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) dye. The ZnO/Ag substrate exhibited excellent sensitivity, and the limit of detection (LOD) for RhB was as low as 10⁻¹¹ M. Furthermore, the SERS substrate could efficiently degrade RhB, with a degradation efficiency of nearly 100% within 150 min. Moreover, it retained good SERS activity after multiple repeated uses. The interaction between Ag NPs, ZnO, and RhB was further investigated, and the mechanism of SERS and photocatalysis was proposed. The as-prepared ZnO/Ag composite structure could be highly applicable as a multifunctional SERS substrate for the rapid detection and photocatalytic degradation of trace amounts of organic pollutants in water.
