Hydrogen Bonds with Chalcogens: Looking Beyond the Second Row of the Periodic Table

Modulation of the strength of weak S-H⋯O hydrogen-bond: Spectroscopic study of the complexes of 2-flurothiophenol with methanol and ethanol

Spectroscopic exploration of sulfur-centered hydrogen bonding involving a thiol group (S-H) as the hydrogen bond donor is scarce in the literature. Herein, we have investigated 1:1 complexes of 2-fluorothiophenol (2-FTP) with methanol (MeOH) and ethanol (EtOH) in the gas phase to examine the physical characteristics and strength of the S-H⋯O hydrogen bond. Structures, conformations, and the strength of the S-H⋯O interaction are investigated by measuring the electronic and Infrared (IR) spectra of the two complexes employing resonant two-photon ionization, UV-UV hole-burning, and IR-UV double resonance spectroscopic techniques combined with quantum chemical calculations. Three conformers of 2-FTP⋯MeOH and two conformers of 2-FTP⋯EtOH have been detected in the experiment. A comparison of the IR spectra obtained from the experiment with those of the low-energy conformers of 2-FTP⋯MeOH and 2-FTP⋯EtOH predicted from the theory confirms that all the observed conformers of the two complexes are primarily S-H⋯O hydrogen bonded. The IR red-shifts found in the S-H stretching frequencies in 2-FTP⋯MeOH and 2-FTP⋯EtOH concerning that in 2-FTP are ∼76 and ∼88 cm-1, respectively, which are much larger than that was reported earlier in the 2-FTP⋯H2O complex (30 cm-1). The strength and physical nature of different noncovalent interactions, including the S-H⋯O hydrogen bond existing in the complexes, are further analyzed using natural bond orbital analysis, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, and localized molecular orbital-energy decomposition analysis. The current investigation reveals that the S-H⋯O hydrogen bond can be strengthened by judicial choices of the hydrogen bond acceptors of higher proton affinities.

Unveiling the Nature and Strength of Selenium-Centered Chalcogen Bonds in Binary Complexes of SeO2 with Oxygen-/Sulfur-Containing Lewis Bases: Insights from Theoretical Calculations

Among various non-covalent interactions, selenium-centered chalcogen bonds (SeChBs) have garnered considerable attention in recent years as a result of their important contributions to crystal engineering, organocatalysis, molecular recognition, materials science, and biological systems. Herein, we systematically investigated π-hole-type Se∙∙∙O/S ChBs in the binary complexes of SeO2 with a series of O-/S-containing Lewis bases by means of high-level ab initio computations. The results demonstrate that there exists an attractive interaction between the Se atom of SeO2 and the O/S atom of Lewis bases. The interaction energies computed at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level range from -4.68 kcal/mol to -10.83 kcal/mol for the Se∙∙∙O chalcogen-bonded complexes and vary between -3.53 kcal/mol and -13.77 kcal/mol for the Se∙∙∙S chalcogen-bonded complexes. The Se∙∙∙O/S ChBs exhibit a relatively short binding distance in comparison to the sum of the van der Waals radii of two chalcogen atoms. The Se∙∙∙O/S ChBs in all of the studied complexes show significant strength and a closed-shell nature, with a partially covalent character in most cases. Furthermore, the strength of these Se∙∙∙O/S ChBs generally surpasses that of the C/O-H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds within the same complex. It should be noted that additional C/O-H∙∙∙O interactions have a large effect on the geometric structures and strength of Se∙∙∙O/S ChBs. Two subunits are connected together mainly via the orbital interaction between the lone pair of O/S atoms in the Lewis bases and the BD*(OSe) anti-bonding orbital of SeO2, except for the SeO2∙∙∙HCSOH complex. The electrostatic component emerges as the largest attractive contributor for stabilizing the examined complexes, with significant contributions from induction and dispersion components as well.

Extraction, Modification, Biofunctionality, and Food Applications of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) Protein: An Up-to-Date Review

Plant-based proteins have gained popularity in the food industry as a good protein source. Among these, chickpea protein has gained significant attention in recent times due to its high yields, high nutritional content, and health benefits. With an abundance of essential amino acids, particularly lysine, and a highly digestible indispensable amino acid score of 76 (DIAAS), chickpea protein is considered a substitute for animal proteins. However, the application of chickpea protein in food products is limited due to its poor functional properties, such as solubility, water-holding capacity, and emulsifying and gelling properties. To overcome these limitations, various modification methods, including physical, biological, chemical, and a combination of these, have been applied to enhance the functional properties of chickpea protein and expand its applications in healthy food products. Therefore, this review aims to comprehensively examine recent advances in Cicer arietinum (chickpea) protein extraction techniques, characterizing its properties, exploring post-modification strategies, and assessing its diverse applications in the food industry. Moreover, we reviewed the nutritional benefits and sustainability implications, along with addressing regulatory considerations. This review intends to provide insights into maximizing the potential of Cicer arietinum protein in diverse applications while ensuring sustainability and compliance with regulations.

Characteristics of nonconventional hydrogen bonds and stability of dimers of chalcogenoaldehyde derivatives: a noticeable role of oxygen compared to other chalcogens

In this work, twenty-four stable dimers of RCHZ with R = H, F, Cl, Br, CH3 or NH2 and Z = O, S, Se or Te were determined. It was found that the stability of most dimers is primarily contributed by the electrostatic force, except for the dominant role of the induction term in those involving a Te atom, which has been rarely observed. Both electron-donating and -withdrawing groups in substituted formaldehyde cause an increase in the strength of nonconventional Csp2-H⋯Z hydrogen bonds, as well as the dimers, in which the electron donating effect plays a more crucial role. The strength of nonconventional hydrogen bonds decreases in the following order: Csp2-H⋯O ≫ Csp2-H⋯S > Csp2-H⋯Se > Csp2-H⋯Te. Remarkably, a highly significant role of the O atom compared to S, Se and Te in increasing the Csp2-H stretching frequency and strength of the nonconventional hydrogen bonds and dimers is found. A Csp2-H stretching frequency red-shift is observed in Csp2-H⋯S/Se/Te, while a blue-shift is obtained in Csp2-H⋯O. When Z changes from O to S to Se and to Te, the Csp2-H blue-shift tends to decrease and eventually turns to a red-shift, in agreement with the increasing order of the proton affinity at Z in the isolated monomer. The magnitude of the Csp2-H stretching frequency red-shift is larger for Csp2-H⋯Te than Csp2-H⋯S/Se, consistent with the rising trend of proton affinity at the Z site and the polarity of the Csp2-H bond in the substituted chalcogenoaldehydes. The Csp2-H blue-shifting of the Csp2-H⋯O hydrogen bonds is observed in all dimers regardless of the electron effect of the substituents. Following complexation, the electron-donating derivatives exhibit a stronger Csp2-H blue-shift compared to the electron-withdrawing ones. Notably, the stronger Csp2-H blue-shift turns out to involve a less polarized Csp2-H bond and a decrease in the occupation at the σ*(Csp2-H) antibonding orbital in the isolated monomer.

C(sp3)-H (N-Phenyltetrazole)thiolation as an Enabling Tool for Molecular Diversification

Methods enabling the broad diversification of C(sp3)-H bonds from a common intermediate are especially valuable in chemical synthesis. Herein, we report a site-selective (N-phenyltetrazole)thiolation of aliphatic and (hetero)benzylic C(sp3)-H bonds using a commercially available disulfide to access N-phenyltetrazole thioethers. The thioether products are readily elaborated in diverse fragment couplings for C-C, C-O, or C-N construction. The C-H functionalization proceeds via a radical-chain pathway involving hydrogen atom transfer by the electron-poor N-phenyltetrazolethiyl radical. Hexafluoroisopropanol was found to be essential to reactions involving aliphatic C(sp3)-H thiolation, with computational analysis consistent with dual hydrogen bonding of the N-phenyltetrazolethiyl radical imparting increased radical electrophilicity to facilitate the hydrogen atom transfer. Substrate is limiting reagent in all cases, and the reaction displays an exceptional functional group tolerance well suited to applications in late-stage diversification.

Hydrogen bond interactions between thioethers and amides: A joint rotational spectroscopic and theoretical study of the formamide⋯dimethyl sulfide adduct

The rotational spectrum of the binary adduct of formamide (HCONH₂) with dimethyl sulfide (DMS) has been investigated employing cavity-based Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy combined with theoretical computations. Experimentally, only one isomer of the adduct was unambiguously observed and assigned according to the theoretically predicted spectroscopic parameters, and its rotational spectrum displays the hyperfine splittings associated with the ¹⁴N nuclear quadrupole coupling effect. The observed isomer exhibits C_s symmetry, such that the ∠CSC angle of the DMS subunit is bisected by the ab-plane of the HCONH₂ moiety. The two moieties in the detected isomer are connected via one primary NH···S and two secondary CH···O hydrogen bonds. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), non-covalent interaction (NCI), natural bond orbital (NBO) and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) approaches were utilized for characterizing the intermolecular interactions occurring in the titled adduct. Additionally, the adduct of HCONH₂ with dimethyl ether (DME) was also theoretically investigated to compare the difference in structure and energy characteristics between the NH···S and NH···O hydrogen bonds.

Selenium in Proteins: Conformational Changes Induced by Se Substitution on Methionine, as Studied in Isolated Model Peptides by Optical Spectroscopy and Quantum Chemistry

The side-chain of methionine residues is long enough to establish NH⋯S H-bonds with neighboring carbonyl groups of the backbone, giving rise to so-called intra-residue 6^δ and inter-residue 7^δ H-bonds. The aim of the present article is to document how the substitution of sulfur with a selenium atom affects the H-bonding of the Met system. This was investigated both experimentally and theoretically by conformation-resolved optical spectroscopy, following an isolated molecule approach. The present work emphasizes the similarities of the Met and Sem residues in terms of conformational structures, energetics, NH⋯Se/S H-bond strength and NH stretch spectral shifts, but also reveals subtle behavior differences between them. It provides evidence for the sensitivity of the H-bonding network with the folding type of the Sem/Met side-chains, where a simple flip of the terminal part of the side-chain can induce an extra 50 cm⁻¹ spectral shift of the NH stretch engaged in a 7^δ NH⋯S/Se bond.

Importance of water and intramolecular interaction governs substantial blue shift of Csp2–H stretching frequency in complexes between chalcogenoaldehydes and water

Geometrical structure, stability and cooperativity, and contribution of hydrogen bonds to the stability of complexes between chalcogenoaldehydes and water were thoroughly investigated using quantum chemical methods. The stability of the complexes increases significantly when one or more H₂O molecules are added to the binary system, whereas it decreases sharply going from O to S, Se, or Te substitution. The O–H⋯O H-bond is twice as stable as C_sp²–H⋯O and O–H⋯S/Se/Te H-bonds. It is found that a considerable blue-shift of C_sp²–H stretching frequency in the C_sp²–H⋯O H-bond is mainly determined by an addition of water into the complexes along with the low polarity of the C_sp²–H covalent bond in formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. The C_sp²–H stretching frequency shift as a function of net second hyperconjugative energy for the σ*(C_sp²–H) antibonding orbital is observed. Remarkably, a considerable C_sp²–H blue shift of 109 cm⁻¹ has been reported for the first time. Upon the addition of H₂O into the binary systems, halogenated complexes witness a decreasing magnitude of the C_sp²–H stretching frequency blue-shift in the C_sp²–H⋯O H-bond, whereas CH₃-substituted complexes experience the opposite trend.

Theoretical Aspects of Nonconventional Hydrogen Bonds in the Complexes of Aldehydes and Hydrogen Chalcogenides

Hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) in the complexes between aldehydes and hydrogen chalcogenides, XCHO...nH₂Z with X = H, F, Cl, Br, and CH₃, Z = O, S, Se, and Te, and n = 1,2, were investigated using high-level ab initio calculations. The C_sp2-H...O H-bonds are found to be about twice as strong as the C_sp2-H...S/Se/Te counterparts. Remarkably, the S/Se/Te-H...S/Se/Te H-bonds are 4.5 times as weak as the O-H...O ones. The addition of the second H₂Z molecule into binary systems induces stronger complexes and causes a positive cooperative effect in ternary complexes. The blue shift of C_sp2-H stretching frequency involving the C_sp2-H...Z H-bond sharply increases when replacing one H atom in HCHO by a CH₃ group. In contrast, when one H atom in HCHO is substituted with a halogen, the magnitude of blue-shifting of the C_sp2-H...Z H-bond becomes smaller. The largest blue shift up to 92 cm^-1 of C_sp2-H stretching frequency in C_sp2-H...O H-bond in CH₃CHO...2H₂O has rarely been observed and is much greater than that in the cases of the C_sp2-H...S/Se/Te ones. The C_sp2-H blue shift of C_sp2-H...Z bonds in the halogenated aldehydes is converted into a red shift when H₂O is replaced by a heavier analogue, such as H₂S, H₂Se, or H₂Te. The stability and classification of nonconventional H-bonds including C_sp2-H...Se/Te, Te-H...Te, and Se/Te-H...O have been established for the first time.

Observation of an Unusually Large IR Red-Shift in an Unconventional S-H···S Hydrogen-Bond

The S-H···S non-covalent interaction is generally known as an extremely unconventional weak hydrogen-bond in the literature. The present gas-phase spectroscopic investigation shows that the S-H···S hydrogen-bond can be as strong as any conventional hydrogen-bond in terms of the IR red-shift in the stretching frequency of the hydrogen-bond donor group. Herein, the strength of the S-H···S hydrogen-bond has been determined by measuring the red-shift (∼150 cm^-1) of the S-H stretching frequency in a model complex of 2-chlorothiophenol and dimethyl sulfide using isolated gas-phase IR spectroscopy coupled with quantum chemistry calculations. The observation of an unusually large IR red-shift in the S-H···S hydrogen-bond is explained in terms of the presence of a significant amount of charge-transfer interactions in addition to the usual electrostatic interactions. The existence of ∼750 S-H···S interactions between the cysteine and methionine residues in 642 protein structures determined from an extensive Protein Data Bank analysis also indicates that this interaction is important for the structures of proteins.

An intraresidue H-bonding motif in selenocysteine and cysteine, revealed by gas phase laser spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations

Models of protein chains containing a seleno-cysteine (Sec) residue have been investigated by gas phase laser spectroscopy in order to document the effect of the H-bonding properties of the SeH group in the folding of the Sec side chain, by comparison with recent data on Ser- and Cys-containing sequences. Experimental data, complemented by quantum chemistry calculations and natural bonding orbital (NBO) analyses, are interpreted in terms of the formation of a so-called 5γ intra-residue motif, which bridges the acceptor chalcogen atom of the side chain to the NH bond of the same residue. This local structure, in which the O/S/Se atom is close to the plane of the N-terminal side amide, is constrained by local backbone-side chain hyperconjugation effects involving the S and Se atoms. Theoretical investigations of the Cys/Sec side chain show that (i) this 5γ motif is an intrinsic feature of these residues, (ii) the corresponding H-bond is strongly non-linear and intrinsically weak, (iii) but enhanced by γ- and β-turn secondary structures, which promote a more favorable 5γ H-bonding approach and distance. The resulting H-bonds are slightly stronger in selenocysteine than in cysteine, but nearly inexistent in serine, whose side chain in contrast behaves as a H-bonding donor. The modest spectral shifts of the Cys/Sec NH stretches measured experimentally reflect the moderate strength of the 5γ H-bonding, in agreement with the correlation obtained with a NBO-based H-bond strength indicator. The evolution along the Ser, Cys and Sec series emphasizes the compromise between the several factors that control the H-bonding in a hyperconjugation-constrained geometry, among them the chalcogen van der Waals and covalent radii. It also illustrates the 5γ H-bond enhancements with the Sec and Cys residues favoured by the constraints imposed by the γ- and β-turn structures of the peptide chain.

Comparison of Bifurcated Halogen with Hydrogen Bonds

Bifurcated halogen bonds are constructed with FBr and FI as Lewis acids, paired with NH₃ and NCH bases. The first type considered places two bases together with a single acid, while the reverse case of two acids sharing a single base constitutes the second type. These bifurcated systems are compared with the analogous H-bonds wherein FH serves as the acid. In most cases, a bifurcated system is energetically inferior to a single linear bond. There is a larger energetic cost to forcing the single σ-hole of an acid to interact with a pair of bases, than the other way around where two acids engage with the lone pair of a single base. In comparison to FBr and FI, the H-bonding FH acid is better able to participate in a bifurcated sharing with two bases. This behavior is traced to the properties of the monomers, in particular the specific shape of the molecular electrostatic potential, the anisotropy of the orbitals of the acid and base that interact directly with one another, and the angular extent of the total electron density of the two molecules.

Participation of S and Se in hydrogen and chalcogen bonds

The heavier chalcogen atoms S, Se, and Te can each participate in a range of different noncovalent interactions. They can serve as both proton donor and acceptor in H-bonds. Each atom can also act as electron acceptor in a chalcogen bond.

Bis(silanetellurone) with C-H···Te Interaction

Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of bis(silanechalcogenones) [Ch = Te (2), S (3), or Se (4)] using an N-heterocyclic silylene-based SiCSi pincer ligand (1). 2 is the first example of a bis(silanetellurone) derivative. The bonding patterns of 2-4 were extensively studied by natural bond orbital, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, and noncovalent interaction index analyses, and these exhibit weak C-H···Ch interaction. The analogous reaction of 1 with trimethyl N-oxide produced a novel bis(cyclosiloxane) derivative (5). All of the complexes are duly characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H, ¹³C, and ²⁹Si) spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Non-covalent interactions with inverted carbon: a carbo-hydrogen bond or a new type of hydrogen bond?

Crystal structure analysis and quantum chemical calculations enabled us to discover a new non-covalent interaction, coined as carbo-hydrogen bond (C_H-bond).
