Assessment of the Composition of Forest Waste in Terms of Its Further Use

This paper presents the results of the analysis of the chemical composition and content of heavy metal contamination in forest logging residues, in order to assess the possibility for their further utilisation. The samples were divided into 9 groups, which included coniferous tree cones, wood, and other multi-species logging residues. The elementary composition, ash content, and calorific value were determined as energy use indicators for the samples. Additionally, the content of heavy and alkali metals, which may affect combustion processes and pollutant emissions, was tested. The high content of heavy metals may also disqualify these residues for other uses. The research shows that the test residues are suitable for energy use due to their high calorific value and low content of heavy metals. However, an increased ash content in some samples and the presence of alkali metals, causing high-temperature corrosion of boilers, may disqualify them as a potential fuel in the combustion process. The forest residues may be used in other thermal processes such as pyrolysis or gasification. A low content of heavy metals and a high content of organic matter permit the use of these residues for the production of adsorbents or composite materials.

Adsorption isotherm models: Classification, physical meaning, application and solving method

Adsorption is widely applied separation process, especially in environmental remediation, due to its low cost and high efficiency. Adsorption isotherm models can provide mechanism information of the adsorption process, which is important for the design of adsorption system. However, the classification, physical meaning, application and solving method of the isotherms have not been systematical analyzed and summarized. In this paper, the adsorption isotherms were classified into adsorption empirical isotherms, isotherms based on Polanyi's theory, chemical adsorption isotherms, physical adsorption isotherms, and the ion exchange model. The derivation and physical meaning of the isotherm models were discussed in detail. In addition, the application of the isotherm models were analyzed and summarized based on over 200 adsorption equilibrium data in literature. The statistical parameters for evaluating the fitness of the models were also discussed. Finally, a user interface (UI) was developed based on Excel software for solving the isotherm models, which was provided in supplemental material and can be easily used to model the adsorption equilibrium data. This paper will provide theoretical basis and guiding methodology for the selection and use of the adsorption isotherms.

Agricultural waste

The management of agricultural waste has become very important because the inappropriate disposal yields negative effects on the environment. The resource recovery from agricultural waste which converts waste into available resources can reduce the waste and new resource consumption. This review summarizes the 2018 researches of over three hundred scholar papers from several aspects: agricultural waste, and, waste chemical characterization, agricultural waste material, adsorption, waste energy, composting, waste biogas, agricultural waste management, and others.
