The effect of feed mechanisms on the structural design of flexible antennas, and research on their material processing and applications

Flexible antennas are widely used in mobile communications, the Internet of Things, personalized medicine, aerospace, and military technologies due to their superior performance in terms of adaptability, impact resistance, high degree of freedom, miniaturization of structures, and cost-effectiveness. With excellent flexibility and portability, these antennas are now being integrated into paper, textiles, and even the human body to withstand the various mechanical stresses of daily life without compromising their performance. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of the basic principles and current development of flexible antennas, systematically analyze the key performance factors of flexible antennas, such as structure, process, material, and application environment, and then discuss in detail the design structure, material selection, preparation process, and corresponding experimental validation of flexible antennas. Flexible antenna design in mobile communication, wearable devices, biomedical technology, and other fields in recent years has been emphasized. Finally, the development status of flexible antenna technology is summarized, and its future development trend and research direction are proposed.

Macroporous Poly(hydromethylsiloxane) Networks as Precursors to Hybrid Ceramics (Ceramers) for Deposition of Palladium Catalysts

Poly(hydromethylsiloxane) (PHMS) was cross-linked with 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-1,3,5,7-tetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4Vi) in water-in-oil High Internal Phase Emulsions to form macroporous materials known as polyHIPEs. It was shown that in the process of pyrolysis under Ar atmosphere at 520 °C, the obtained polyHIPEs were converted to ceramers with high yields (82.8-88.0 wt.%). Structurally, the obtained ceramers were hybrid ceramics, i.e., they consisted of Si-O framework and preserved organic moieties. Macropores present in the polyHIPE precursors remained in ceramers. Ceramers contained also micro- and mesopores which resulted from the precursor's mass loss during pyrolysis. Total pore volume and BET specific surface area related to the existence of micro- and mesopores in ceramers depended on the PHMS: D4Vi ratio applied in polyHIPE synthesis. The highest total pore volume (0.143 cm3/g) and specific surface area (344 m2/g) were reached after pyrolysis of the precursor prepared with the lowest amount of D4Vi as compared to PHMS. The composite materials obtained after deposition of PdO nanoparticles onto ceramers followed by reduction of PdO by H2 were active and selective catalysts for phenylacetylene hydrogenation to styrene.

Strong and Robust Core-Shell Ceramic Fibers Composed of Highly Compacted Nanoparticles for Multifunctional Electronic Skin

Functional fibers composed of textiles are considered a promising platform for constructing electronic skin (e-skin). However, developing robust electronic fibers with integrated multiple functions remains a formidable task especially when a complex service environment is concerned. In this work, a continuous and controllable strategy is demonstrated to prepare e-skin-oriented ceramic fibers via coaxial wet spinning followed by cold isostatic pressing. The resulting core-shell structured fiber with tightly compacted Al-doped ZnO nanoparticles in the core and highly ordered aramid nanofibers in the shell exhibit excellent tensile strength (316 MPa) with ultra-high elongation (33%). Benefiting from the susceptible contacts between conducting ceramic nanoparticles, the ceramic fiber shows both ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factor = 2141) as a strain sensor and a broad working range up to 70 °C as a temperature sensor. Furthermore, the tunable core-shell structure of the fiber enables the optimization of impedance matching and attenuation of electromagnetic waves for the corresponding textile, resulting in a minimum reflection loss of -39.1 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth covering the whole X-band. Therefore, the versatile core-shell ceramic fiber-derived textile can serve as a stealth e-skin for monitoring the motion and temperature of robots under harsh conditions.

Advancements in Thermal Insulation through Ceramic Micro-Nanofiber Materials

Ceramic fibers have the advantages of high temperature resistance, light weight, favorable chemical stability and superior mechanical vibration resistance, which make them widely used in aerospace, energy, metallurgy, construction, personal protection and other thermal protection fields. Further refinement of the diameter of conventional ceramic fibers to microns or nanometers could further improve their thermal insulation performance and realize the transition from brittleness to flexibility. Processing traditional two-dimensional (2D) ceramic fiber membranes into three-dimensional (3D) ceramic fiber aerogels could further increase porosity, reduce bulk density, and reduce solid heat conduction, thereby improving thermal insulation performance and expanding application areas. Here, a comprehensive review of the newly emerging 2D ceramic micro-nanofiber membranes and 3D ceramic micro-nanofiber aerogels is demonstrated, starting from the presentation of the thermal insulation mechanism of ceramic fibers, followed by the summary of 2D ceramic micro-nanofiber membranes according to different types, and then the generalization of the construction strategies for 3D ceramic micro-nanofiber aerogels. Finally, the current challenges, possible solutions, and future prospects of ceramic micro-nanofiber materials are comprehensively discussed. We anticipate that this review could provide some valuable insights for the future development of ceramic micro-nanofiber materials for high temperature thermal insulation.

Flexible Piezoresistive Sensors Based on PPy Granule-Anchored Multilayer Fibrous Membranes with a Wide Operating Range and High Sensitivity

The employment of flexible piezoresistive sensors has sparked growing interest within the realm of wearable electronic devices, specifically in the fields of health detection and e-skin. Nevertheless, the advancement of piezoresistive sensors has been impeded by their limited sensitivity and restricted operating ranges. Consequently, it is imperative to fabricate sensors with heightened sensitivity and expanded operating ranges through the utilization of the appropriate methodologies. In this paper, piezoresistive sensors were fabricated utilizing electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride/polyacrylonitrile/polyethylene-polypropylene glycol multilayer fibrous membranes anchored with polypyrrole granules as the sensing layer, while electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) fibers were employed as the flexible substrate. The sensitivity of the sensor is investigated by varying the fiber diameter of the sensing layer. The experimental findings reveal that a concentration of 14 wt % in the spinning solution exhibits high sensitivity (996.7 kPa-1) within a wide working range (0-10 kPa). This is attributed to the favorable diameter of the fibers prepared at this concentration, which facilitates the uniform in situ growth of pyrrole. The highly deformable TPU flexible fibers and multilayer sensing layer structure enable different linear responses across a broad pressure range (0-1 MPa). Furthermore, the sensor demonstrates good cyclic stability and can detect human movements under different pressures. These results suggest that the piezoresistive sensor with a wide operating range and high sensitivity has significant potential for future health monitoring and artificial intelligence applications.

Alumina Ceramic Nanofibers: An Overview of the Spinning Gel Preparation, Manufacturing Process, and Application

As an important inorganic material, alumina ceramic nanofibers have attracted more and more attention because of their excellent thermal stability, high melting point, low thermal conductivity, and good chemical stability. In this paper, the preparation conditions for alumina spinning gel, such as the experimental raw materials, spin finish aid, aging time, and so on, are briefly introduced. Then, various methods for preparing the alumina ceramic nanofibers are described, such as electrospinning, solution blow spinning, centrifugal spinning, and some other preparation processes. In addition, the application of alumina ceramic nanofibers in thermal insulation, high-temperature filtration, catalysis, energy storage, water restoration, sound absorption, bioengineering, and other fields are described. The wide application prospect of alumina ceramic nanofibers highlights its potential as an advanced functional material with various applications. This paper aims to provide readers with valuable insights into the design of alumina ceramic nanofibers and to explore their potential applications, contributing to the advancement of various technologies in the fields of energy, environment, and materials science.

Recent Progress and Perspectives of Direct Ink Writing Applications for Mass Transfer Enhancement in Gas-Phase Adsorption and Catalysis

Conventional adsorbents and catalysts shaped by granulation or extrusion have high pressure drop and poor flexibility for chemical, energy, and environmental processes. Direct ink writing (DIW), a kind of 3D printing, has evolved into a crucial technique for manufacturing scalable configurations of adsorbents and catalysts with satisfactory programmable automation, highly optional materials, and reliable construction. Particularly, DIW can generate specific morphologies required for excellent mass transfer kinetics, which is essential in gas-phase adsorption and catalysis. Here, DIW methodologies for mass transfer enhancement in gas-phase adsorption and catalysis, covering the raw materials, fabrication process, auxiliary optimization methods, and practical applications are comprehensively summarized. The prospects and challenges of DIW methodology in realizing good mass transfer kinetics are discussed. Ideal components with a gradient porosity, multi-material structure, and hierarchical morphology are proposed for future investigations.

3D Biomimetic Calcified Cartilaginous Callus that Induces Type H Vessels Formation and Osteoclastogenesis

The formation of a calcified cartilaginous callus (CACC) is crucial during bone repair. CACC can stimulate the invasion of type H vessels into the callus to couple angiogenesis and osteogenesis, induce osteoclastogenesis to resorb the calcified matrix, and promote osteoclast secretion of factors to enhance osteogenesis, ultimately achieving the replacement of cartilage with bone. In this study, a porous polycaprolactone/hydroxyapatite-iminodiacetic acid-deferoxamine (PCL/HA-SF-DFO) 3D biomimetic CACC is developed using 3D printing. The porous structure can mimic the pores formed by the matrix metalloproteinase degradation of the cartilaginous matrix, HA-containing PCL can mimic the calcified cartilaginous matrix, and SF anchors DFO onto HA for the slow release of DFO. The in vitro results show that the scaffold significantly enhances angiogenesis, promotes osteoclastogenesis and resorption by osteoclasts, and enhances the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal stem cells by promoting collagen triple helix repeat-containing 1 expression by osteoclasts. The in vivo results show that the scaffold significantly promotes type H vessels formation and the expression of coupling factors to promote osteogenesis, ultimately enhancing the regeneration of large-segment bone defects in rats and preventing dislodging of the internal fixation screw. In conclusion, the scaffold inspired by biological bone repair processes effectively promotes bone regeneration.

Substantial Copper (Cu2+) Uptake by Metakaolin-Based Geopolymer and Its Resistance to Acid Leaching and Ion Exchange

Geopolymers are inorganic, chemically resistant aluminosilicate-based binding agents, which remove hazardous metal ions from exposed aqueous media. However, the removal efficiency of a given metal ion and the potential ion remobilization have to be assessed for individual geopolymers. Therefore, copper ions (Cu²⁺) were removed by a granulated, metakaolin-based geopolymer (GP) in water matrices. Subsequent ion exchange and leaching tests were used to determine the mineralogical and chemical properties as well as the resistance of the Cu²⁺-bearing GPs to corrosive aquatic environments. Experimental results indicate the pH of the reacted solutions to have a significant impact on the Cu²⁺ uptake systematics: the removal efficiency ranged from 34-91% at pH 4.1-5.7 up to ~100% at pH 11.1-12.4. This is equivalent to Cu²⁺ uptake capacities of up to 193 mg/g and 560 mg/g in acidic versus alkaline media. The uptake mechanism was governed by Cu²⁺-substitution for alkalis in exchangeable GP sites and by co-precipitation of gerhardtite (Cu₂(NO₃)(OH)₃) or tenorite (CuO) and spertiniite (Cu(OH)₂). All Cu-GPs showed excellent resistance to ion exchange (Cu²⁺ release: 0-2.4%) and acid leaching (Cu²⁺ release: 0.2-0.7%), suggesting that tailored GPs have a high potential to immobilize Cu²⁺ ions from aquatic media.

Elastic and compressible Al2O3/ZrO2/La2O3 nanofibrous membranes for firefighting protective clothing

Developing ceramic nanofibrous membranes for the thermal insulation layer of firefighting protective clothing is vital. However, previous ceramic nanofibrous membranes were brittle and easy to break during service in high-temperature environments. The lack of elastic and compressible properties has limited the high-end applications of ceramic nanofibrous membranes. In this work, elastic and compressible Al₂O₃/ZrO₂/La₂O₃ nanofibrous membranes were fabricated via sol-gel electrospinning and calcination in air at different temperatures. The as-fabricated Al₂O₃/ZrO₂/La₂O₃ nanofibrous membranes can maintain excellent elasticity and compressibility in the temperature ranging from -196 to 1400 °C. Moreover, they have low thermal conductivity and high working temperatures. These favorable characteristics make the Al₂O₃/ZrO₂/La₂O₃ nanofibrous membranes a promising candidate for the thermal insulation layer of firefighting protective clothing.

Fabrication and Applications of Ceramic-Based Nanofiber Materials Service in High-Temperature Harsh Conditions—A Review

Ceramic-based nanofiber materials have attracted attention due to their high-temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, chemical stability, and excellent mechanical performance, such as flexibility, tensile, and compression, which endow them with promising application prospects for filtration, water treatment, sound insulation, thermal insulation, etc. According to the above advantages, we, therefore, reviewed the ceramic-based nanofiber materials from the perspectives of components, microstructure, and applications to provide a systematical introduction to ceramic-based nanofiber materials as so-called blankets or aerogels, as well as their applications for thermal insulation, catalysis, and water treatment. We hope that this review will provide some necessary suggestions for further research on ceramic-based nanomaterials.

Multifunctional sound-absorbing and mechanical metamaterials via a decoupled mechanism design approach

Multifunctional materials are in high demand for practical engineering applications. Owing to the ubiquitous noise and impact energy hazards in many settings, traditional materials and conventionally designed metamaterials are incapable of preventing these types of hazard simultaneously. Herein, we report a new paradigm, via a decoupled approach, in the design of acousto-mechanical multifunctional metamaterials. We leverage the morphology of a Helmholtz resonator, such that the sound-absorbing and mechanical components are designed independently. For sound absorption, we adopt a coherent coupling design for a favorable resonant response, while for the mechanical response, we adopt customized struts. We then demonstrate our concept via 3D printing. Experimentally measured remarkable broadband absorption in the practical low-frequency range (<1.0 kHz) is achieved. Absorption mechanisms are attributed to viscous and thermal boundary dissipation. Compression tests also reveal that the metamaterials are highly deformation resilient with a recovery of up to 98%, owing to both the lattice structure design and the viscoelastic behavior of the base material. Through this decoupled design, we further demonstrate the potential of our metamaterials in customizable absorption, strength, pseudo-reusability, and impact resistance. The proposed design paradigm broadens the horizon for the design of multifunctional materials, offering an impetus to their exploration for practical applications.

Synthesis and Fabrication of a Betulin-Containing Polyolefin Electrospun Fibrous Mat for Antibacterial Applications

Biocompounds play a significant role in the area of renewable polymers in terms of sustainability, as they can be employed or converted into monomers for polymerization in a manner similar to many petroleum-derived monomers. In this work, betulin, a plant-derived triterpene with antibacterial and antiviral properties, was converted to two kinds of α,ω-diene derivatives with different methylene spacer lengths between the olefin and the ester group via an esterification reaction. Polyolefins were subsequently made by acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of betulin-based α,ω-diene. The polymer consists of rigid betulin and flexible unsaturated aliphatic segments, which was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The influence of different parameters including temperature, catalysts, and catalyst loading on ADMET polymerization was investigated. These polyolefins with high molar mass (up to 20.0 kg/mol) were obtained in an elevated yield (≥95%). Thermal analysis of these (co)polymers showed excellent thermal stability (up to 360 °C) and tunable glass transition temperatures depending on the nature of betulin and alkene segments. To evaluate the antimicrobial potential of betulin-containing polymers, the fabrication of polyolefin fibrous mats (ca. 400 nm diameter) via the electrospinning technique was successfully achieved. Their morphology and hydrophobicity were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and water contact angle analyses. The fibrous mats possessed broad-spectrum antibacterial property, providing a feasible strategy to design betulin-based polymeric fibers for many applications in the biomedical field.

Approaches to Preceramic Polymer Fiber Fabrication and On-Demand Applications

The demand for lightweight, high-modulus, and temperature-resistant materials for aerospace and other high-temperature applications has contributed to the development of ceramic fibers that exhibit most of the favorable properties of monolithic ceramics. This review demonstrates preceramic-based polymer fiber spinning and fiber classifications. We discuss different types of fiber spinning and the advantages of each. Tuning the preceramic polymer chemical properties, molar mass, functional chemistry influences, and incorporation with fillers are thoroughly investigated. Further, we present the applications of preceramic-based polymer fibers in different fields including aerospace, biomedical, and sensor applications. This concise review summarizes recent developments in preceramic fiber chemistry and essential applications.
