A Review on Electrospinning as Versatile Supports for Diverse Nanofibers and Their Applications in Environmental Sensing

Machine learning powered CN-coordinated cobalt nanoparticles embedded cellulosic nanofibers to assess meat quality via clenbuterol monitoring

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has prohibited the use of clenbuterol (CLN) because it induces anabolic muscle growth while potentially causing adverse effects such as palpitations, anxiety, and muscle tremors. Thus, it is vital to assess meat quality because, athletes might have positive test for CLN even after consuming very low quantity of CLN contaminated meat. Numerous materials applied for CLN monitoring faced potential challenges like sluggish ion transport, non-uniform ion/molecule movement, and inadequate electrode surface binding. To overcome these shortcomings, herein we engineered bimetallic zeolitic imidazole framework (BM-ZIF) derived N-doped porous carbon embedded Co nanoparticles (CN-CoNPs), dispersed on conductive cellulose acetate-polyaniline (CP) electrospun nanofibers for sensitive electrochemical monitoring of CLN. Interestingly, the smartly designed CN-CoNPs wrapped CP (CN-CoNPs-CP) electrospun nanofibers offers rapid diffusion of CLN molecules to the sensing interface through amine and imine groups of CP, thus minimizing the inhomogeneous ion transportation and inadequate electrode surface binding. Additionally, to synchronize experiments, machine learning (ML) algorithms were applied to optimize, predict, and validate voltametric current responses. The ML-trained sensor demonstrated high selectivity, even amidst interfering substances, with notable sensitivity (4.7527 μA/μM/cm2), a broad linear range (0.002-8 μM), and a low limit of detection (1.14 nM). Furthermore, the electrode exhibited robust stability, retaining 98.07% of its initial current over a 12-h period. This ML-powered sensing approach was successfully employed to evaluate meat quality in terms of CLN level. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of using ML powered system for electrochemical sensing of CLN.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation on single silver nanoring with nanoscale surface roughness

With the expansion of the application of high-sensitivity Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique, micro SERS-active substrates with rich optical properties and high-level functions are desired. In this study, silver nanorings with nanoscale surface roughness were fabricated as a new type of enclosed quasi-2D micro-SERS-active substrate. Highly-crystalline spherical and hemispherical silver nanoprotrusions were densely and uniformly distributed over the entire surface of the nanorings. The SERS signals were significantly enhanced on the roughened silver nanorings which were mainly derived from the maximal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) points at the junctions between adjacent coupled nanoprotrusions on the roughened nanorings. The mapping image shows a uniform and intense LSPR enhancement over the nanorings, owing to the uniform and dense distribution of silver nanoprotrusions and the resulting uniform distribution of maximal LSPR points on the roughened nanorings. The dark-field spectra further indicated that the single roughened silver nanoring had significant LSPR enhancement, a wide LSPR frequency-range response, and adaptability for SERS enhancement. Notably, both the measured and simulated results demonstrate that the maximal LSPR enhancement at the junctions between the nanoprotrusions, which are distributed on the inner surface of the silver nanoring, is higher than that on the outer surface because of the plasmon-focusing effect of the enclosed silver nanoring, which leads to the lateral asymmetrical distribution of LSPR intensity, indicating more LSPR and SERS features. These results indicate that single roughened silver nanorings exhibit excellent performance as a new type of enclosed quasi-2D silver nanoring micro-SERS-active substrate, microzone LSPR catalysis, and micro/nanodevices.

Ultra-Flexible, Breathable, and Robust PAN/MWCNTs/PANI Nanofiber Networks for High-Performance Wearable Gas Sensor Application

Wearable gas sensors have drawn great attention for potential applications in health monitoring, minienvironment detection, and advanced soft electronic noses. However, it still remains a great challenge to simultaneously achieve excellent flexibility, high sensitivity, robustness, and gas permeability, because of the inherent limitation of widely used traditional organic flexible substrates. Herein, an electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber network was designed as a flexible substrate, on which an ultraflexible wearable gas sensor was prepared with in situ assembled polyaniline (PANI) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a sensitive layer. The unique nanofiber network and strong binding force between substrate and sensing materials endow the wearable gas sensor with excellent robustness, flexibility, and gas permeability. The wearable sensor can maintain stable NH3 sensing performance while sustaining extreme bending and stretching (50% of strain). The Young's modulus of wearable PAN/MWCNTs/PANI sensor is as low as 18.9 MPa, which is several orders of magnitude smaller than those of reported flexible sensors. The water vapor transmission rate of the sensor is 0.38 g/(cm2 24 h), which enables the wearing comfort of the sensor. Most importantly, due to the effective exposure of sensing sites as well as the heterostructure effect between MWCNTs and PANI, the sensor shows high sensitivity to NH3 at room temperature, and the theoretical limit of detection is as low as 300 ppb. This work provides a new avenue for the realization of reliable and high-performance wearable gas sensors.

Research progress in the preparation of lignin-based carbon nanofibers for supercapacitors using electrospinning technology: A review

With the development of renewable energy technologies, the demand for efficient energy storage systems is growing. Supercapacitors have attracted considerable attention as efficient electrical energy storage devices because of their excellent power density, fast charging and discharging capabilities, and long cycle life. Carbon nanofibers are widely used as electrode materials in supercapacitors because of their excellent mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, and light weight. Although environmental factors are increasingly driving the application of circular economy concepts in materials science, lignin is an underutilized but promising environmentally benign electrode material for supercapacitors. Lignin-based carbon nanofibers are ideal for preparing high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials owing to their unique chemical stability, abundance, and environmental friendliness. Electrospinning is a well-known technique for producing large quantities of uniform lignin-based nanofibers, and is the simplest method for the large-scale production of lignin-based carbon nanofibers with specific diameters. This paper reviews the latest research progress in the preparation of lignin-based carbon nanofibers using the electrospinning technology, discusses the prospects of their application in supercapacitors, and analyzes the current challenges and future development directions. This is expected to have an enlightening effect on subsequent research.

A sponge-like nanofiber melatonin-loaded scaffold accelerates vascularized bone regeneration via improving mitochondrial energy metabolism

Electrospun nanofibers have been widely employed in bone tissue engineering for their ability to mimic the micro to nanometer scale network of the native bone extracellular matrix. However, the dense fibrous structure and limited mechanical support of these nanofibers pose challenges for the treatment of critical size bone defects. In this study, we propose a facile approach for creating a three-dimensional scaffold using interconnected electrospun nanofibers containing melatonin (Scaffold@MT). The hypothesis posited that the sponge-like Scaffold@MT could potentially enhance bone regeneration and angiogenesis by modulating mitochondrial energy metabolism. Melatonin-loaded gelatin and poly-lactic-acid nanofibers were fabricated using electrospinning, then fragmented into shorter fibers. The sponge-like Scaffold@MT was created through a process involving homogenization, low-temperature lyophilization, and chemical cross-linking, while maintaining the microstructure of the continuous nanofibers. The incorporation of short nanofibers led to a low release of melatonin and increased Young's modulus of the scaffold. Scaffold@MT demonstrated positive biocompatibility by promoting a 14.2 % increase in cell proliferation. In comparison to the control group, Scaffold@MT significantly enhanced matrix mineralization by 3.2-fold and upregulated the gene expression of osteoblast-specific markers, thereby facilitating osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs). Significantly, Scaffold@MT led to a marked enhancement in the mitochondrial energy function of BMMSCs, evidenced by elevated adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, mitochondrial membrane potential, and protein expression of respiratory chain factors. Furthermore, Scaffold@MT promoted the migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and increased tube formation by 1.3 times compared to the control group, accompanied by an increase in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGFA) expression. The results of in vivo experiments indicate that the implantation of Scaffold@MT significantly improved vascularized bone regeneration in a distal femur defect in rats. Micro-computed tomography analysis conducted 8 weeks post-surgery revealed that Scaffold@MT led to optimal development of new bone microarchitecture. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses demonstrated that Scaffold@MT facilitated bone matrix deposition and new blood vessel formation at the defect site. Overall, the utilization of melatonin-loaded nanofiber sponges exhibits significant promise as a scaffold that promotes bone growth and angiogenesis, making it a viable option for the repair of critical-sized bone defects.

Capturing cerium ions via hydrogel microspheres promotes vascularization for bone regeneration

The rational design of multifunctional biomaterials with hierarchical porous structure and on-demand biological activity is of great consequence for bone tissue engineering (BTE) in the contemporary world. The advanced combination of trace element cerium ions (Ce3+) with bone repair materials makes the composite material capable of promoting angiogenesis and enhancing osteoblast activity. Herein, a living and phosphorylated injectable porous hydrogel microsphere (P-GelMA-Ce@BMSCs) is constructed by microfluidic technology and coordination reaction with metal ion ligands while loaded with exogenous BMSCs. Exogenous stem cells can adhere to and proliferate on hydrogel microspheres, thus promoting cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) and cell-cell interactions. The active ingredient Ce3+ promotes the proliferation, osteogenic differentiation of rat BMSCs, and angiogenesis of endotheliocytes by promoting mineral deposition, osteogenic gene expression, and VEGF secretion. The enhancement of osteogenesis and improvement of angiogenesis of the P-GelMA-Ce scaffold is mainly associated with the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. This study could provide novel and meaningful insights for treating bone defects with biofunctional materials on the basis of metal ions.

Insights into Materials, Physics, and Applications in Flexible and Wearable Acoustic Sensing Technology

Sound plays a crucial role in the perception of the world. It allows to communicate, learn, and detect potential dangers, diagnose diseases, and much more. However, traditional acoustic sensors are limited in their form factors, being rigid and cumbersome, which restricts their potential applications. Recently, acoustic sensors have made significant advancements, transitioning from rudimentary forms to wearable devices and smart everyday clothing that can conform to soft, curved, and deformable surfaces or surroundings. In this review, the latest scientific and technological breakthroughs with insightful analysis in materials, physics, design principles, fabrication strategies, functions, and applications of flexible and wearable acoustic sensing technology are comprehensively explored. The new generation of acoustic sensors that can recognize voice, interact with machines, control robots, enable marine positioning and localization, monitor structural health, diagnose human vital signs in deep tissues, and perform organ imaging is highlighted. These innovations offer unique solutions to significant challenges in fields such as healthcare, biomedicine, wearables, robotics, and metaverse. Finally, the existing challenges and future opportunities in the field are addressed, providing strategies to advance acoustic sensing technologies for intriguing real-world applications and inspire new research directions.

PVA-Based Electrospun Materials-A Promising Route to Designing Nanofiber Mats with Desired Morphological Shape-A Review

Poly(vinyl alcohol) is one of the most attractive polymers with a wide range of uses because of its water solubility, biocompatibility, low toxicity, good mechanical properties, and relatively low cost. This review article focuses on recent advances in poly(vinyl alcohol) electrospinning and summarizes parameters of the process (voltage, distance, flow rate, and collector), solution (molecular weight and concentration), and ambient (humidity and temperature) in order to comprehend the influence on the structural, mechanical, and chemical properties of poly(vinyl alcohol)-based electrospun matrices. The importance of poly(vinyl alcohol) electrospinning in biomedical applications is emphasized by exploring a literature review on biomedical applications including wound dressings, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and biosensors. The study also highlights a new promising area of particles formation through the electrospraying of poly(vinyl alcohol). The limitations and advantages of working with different poly(vinyl alcohol) matrices are reviewed, and some recommendations for the future are made to advance this field of study.

Swallowed Embedding of Nanopetal-Rich Microflowers in Flexible Photocatalytic and Thermoresponsive Functional Composite Fibers

Developing efficient catalysts to degrade pollutants in water is a very important way to alleviate water pollution. However, it is crucial but challenging to broaden the functions of conventional photocatalysts and improve their environmental adaptability. In this paper, Bi(Er3+/Yb3+)OBr/polyacrylonitrile (BOB-EY/PAN) composite fibers with a swallowed-embedded structure assembled with nanopetal-rich microflowers were designed and fabricated, integrating photocatalytic and temperature-monitoring functions simultaneously. Their unique structure brings a large specific surface area, and the doping of rare earth ions improves the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs, which enhances the photocatalytic efficiency and endows the fibers with a temperature-monitoring function at the same time. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the nanofibers show a maximum degradation efficiency of 99.2% for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) with a degradation constant of K as high as 0.078 min-1. Based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR), the two thermally coupled levels of Er3+ in the nanofibers, 2H11/2 and 4S3/2, provide real-time temperature feedback, displaying a maximum relative sensitivity as high as 0.0215 K-1 at 303 K. Dual-functional BOB-EY/PAN composite nanofibers show great potential for industrial wastewater disposition, providing solutions for wastewater purification in special scenarios.

Preparation of a hydrophilic nanofiber membrane by electrospinning for application in the detection of NO2 by chemiluminescence

The strong hydrophobicity of the PVDF membrane is prone to contamination that is hard to clean for long-term usage. In this study, hydrophilic and antifouling nanofiber membranes (NMs) were prepared with the hydrophilic polymer PVP and inorganic nanoparticles TiO2NPS. This NM was found to have excellent cleanability and good recyclability. Within 30 minutes, the residual ions could be removed by cleaning with deionized water. In alkaline solutions with the power of hydrogen (PH) ≤10, NM exhibits good alkaline resistance and recycling performance. It was also found, for the first time, that TiO2NPS could enhance the sensitivity of Luminol-NO2 (L-NO2) by 4 times. The detection of NO2 concentration by NM presents an excellent linear relationship with the chemiluminescence reading. This linear relationship would aid quick and convenient detection of NO2 using chemiluminescence.

Electrospun Nanofiber Materials for Photothermal Interfacial Evaporation

Photothermal interfacial evaporation with low cost and environmental friendliness has attracted much attention. However, there are still many problems with this technology, such as heat loss and salt accumulation. Due to their different structures and adjustable chemical composition, electrospun nanofiber materials generally exhibit some unique properties that provide new approaches to address the aforementioned issues. In this review, the rational design principles for improving the total efficiency of solar evaporation are described for thermal/water management systems and salt-resistance strategies. And we review the state-of-the-art advancements in photothermal evaporation based on nanofiber materials and discuss their derivative applications in desalination, water purification, and power generation. Finally, we highlight key challenges and opportunities in both fundamental research and practical applications to inform further developments in the field of interfacial evaporation.

Integrating reverse osmosis and forward osmosis (RO-FO) for printing and dyeing wastewater treatment: impact of FO on water recovery

Reverse osmosis (RO) alone has low water recovery efficiency because of membrane fouling and limited operating pressure. In this study, a combined reverse osmosis-forward osmosis (RO-FO) process was used for the first time to improve the water recovery efficiency of secondary effluent in printing and dyeing wastewater. The effects of operating pressure and pH on water recovery and removal efficiency of RO-FO were investigated. The results showed that the optimum conditions were an operating pressure of 1.5 MPa and a feed solution pH of 9.0. Under optimal operating conditions, most of the organic and inorganic substances in the wastewater can be removed, and the rejection of total organic carbon (TOC), Sb, Ca, and K were 98.7, 99.3, 97.0, and 92.7%, respectively. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrices coupled with parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC) analysis indicated that two components (tryptophan and tyrosine) in the influent were effectively rejected by the hybrid process. The maximum water recovery (Rw, max) could reach 95%, which was higher than the current single RO process (75%). This research provided a feasible strategy to effectively recover water from printing and dyeing wastewater.

Stimuli-responsive electrospun nanofibers for drug delivery, cancer therapy, wound dressing, and tissue engineering

The stimuli-responsive nanofibers prepared by electrospinning have become an ideal stimuli-responsive material due to their large specific surface area and porosity, which can respond extremely quickly to external environmental incitement. As an intelligent drug delivery platform, stimuli-responsive nanofibers can efficiently load drugs and then be stimulated by specific conditions (light, temperature, magnetic field, ultrasound, pH or ROS, etc.) to achieve slow, on-demand or targeted release, showing great potential in areas such as drug delivery, tumor therapy, wound dressing, and tissue engineering. Therefore, this paper reviews the recent trends of stimuli-responsive electrospun nanofibers as intelligent drug delivery platforms in the field of biomedicine.

MIL-101(Fe) based biomass as permeable reactive barrier applied to EK-PRB remediation of antimony contaminated soil

Numerous studies have demonstrated that electrokinetic-permeable reactive barrier (EK-PRB) can be used for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils, and their remediation efficiency is mainly determined by the filler material selected. By growing MIL-101(Fe) in situ on hollow loofah fiber (HLF), a novel material entitled HLF@MIL-101(Fe) was developed. The morphological characteristics and loading conditions were investigated, the adsorption characteristics were analyzed, and finally the synthesized composite material was applied to treat antimony-contaminated soil with EK-PRB as the reaction medium. The results show that MIL-101(Fe) is stably loaded on HLF. The adsorption capacity of Sb(III) can reach up to 82.31 mg g^-1, and the adsorption is in accordance with the quasi-secondary kinetic model, which indicates that chemisorption is dominant. The isothermal adsorption model indicates that the adsorption form of HLF@MIL-101(Fe) is mainly monolayer adsorption with more uniform adsorption binding energy. In the EK-PRB experiment, when ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is used as the cathodic electrolyte, it can effectively enhance the electromigration and electroosmotic effects, and the overall remediation efficiency of the soil is increased by 38.12% compared with the citric acid (CA) group. These demonstrate the feasibility of HLF@MIL-101(Fe) in collaboration with EK-PRB in the treatment of antimony-contaminated soil.
