Abstract
Diorganyl diselenides have emerged as privileged structures because they are easy to prepare, have distinct reactivity, and have broad biological activity. They have also been used in the synthesis of natural products as an electrophile in the organoselenylation of aromatic systems and peptides, reductions of alkenes, and nucleophilic substitution. This review summarizes the advancements in methods for the transformations promoted by diorganyl diselenides in the main functions of organic chemistry. Parallel, it will also describe the main findings on pharmacology and toxicology of diorganyl diselenides, emphasizing anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, chemotherapeutic, and antimicrobial activities. Therefore, an examination detailing the reactivity and biological characteristics of diorganyl diselenides provides valuable insights for academic researchers and industrial professionals.

Abstract
Vertebrate animal models are essential in research; however, efforts need to be made to decrease animal suffering as much as possible. It could be useful to determine humane endpoints that could serve as surrogates for a fatal outcome. We address this issue with respect to infectious diseases. We propose a humane endpoint for studies of Sporothrix brasiliensis infection. BALB/c mice were inoculated subcutaneously in the footpad. To define a humane endpoint, we considered two groups: animals who died during the experiment, and those euthanized at the end of the experiment. The groups were compared for colony-forming units (CFU) in internal organs, clinical condition, and body weight. Thirteen (22%) animals died before the end of the experiment due to the progression of local infection to severe and disseminated sporotrichosis. Analyzing data of the groups, we propose the following future criteria for euthanasia as a humane endpoint: neurological impairment OR necrosis of the footpad OR loss of ≥ 20% body weight AND moderate to severe dehydration. In view of the current global epidemiological impact of zoonotic sporotrichosis caused by S. brasiliensis, our data could facilitate the utility of models used to study the disease, particularly therapy.

Abstract
We describe the successful treatment of a series of 30 zoonotic sporotrichosis cases from southern Brazil. Sporothrix brasiliensis was the species genotypically identified in all 25 confirmed cases. Five other cases were classified as probable, without laboratory confirmation, but with clinical and epidemiological data of cat-transmitted sporotrichosis. Two isolates were sequenced by translation elongation factor-1 alpha (EF1α) loci in order to compare their sequences, and both of them showed distinct genotypes from S. brasiliensis strains from other Brazilian states. Itraconazole (ITZ) or potassium iodide (KI) were the first choice treatment in 28 and 2 cases, respectively. Microdilution assay showed a wild-type profile of S. brasiliensis isolates to ITZ. However, a lack of clinical response occurred in 42% of cases, especially those treated with ITZ 100 mg/day, and treatment needed modifications, by either increased doses or antifungal combinations. Clinical cure required a mean of 187 days of treatment, which was dependent on the clinical form of the disease and age of patients. Therapy, including dosages and durations, for cutaneous forms of sporotrichosis requires re-evaluation, since cases caused by S. brasiliensis may influence treatment efficacy.
