Abstract
PURPOSE The aims of this study are to evaluate the effectiveness of different exercise interventions on patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and to provide evidence-based exercise prescriptions for this population. METHODS The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), VIP, and Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform were searched until January 2023. The data were pooled and a meta-analysis was conducted. RESULTS A total of 19 studies were conducted with 778 participants. The Schroth exercises group (mean difference = -3.48, 95% confidence interval = -4.73 to -2.23, P < 0.00001) and strength training group (mean difference = -3.43, 95% confidence interval = -4.06 to -2.80, P < 0.00001) had better recovery of the Cobb angle than the other groups. The Cobb angle rehabilitation effect was good in the time of less than 60-min group. In addition, there was no significant difference found between the different intervention periods groups ( P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Schroth exercise and strength training significantly improved Cobb angle of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients; exercising for less than 60 mins is effective for Cobb angle rehabilitation, but prolonging exercise time cannot improve training effectiveness; 12 wks of exercise significantly improved Cobb angle, but prolonged training periods did not have a significant impact.

Abstract
PURPOSE Spinopelvic fixation (SPF) using traditional iliac screws has provided biomechanical advantages compared to previous constructs, but common complications include screw prominence and wound complications. The newer S2 alar-iliac (S2AI) screw may provide a lower profile option with lower rates of complications and revisions for adult spinal deformity (ASD). The purpose of this study was to compare rates of complications and revision following SPF between S2AI and traditional iliac screws in patients with ASD. METHODS A PRISMA-compliant systematic literature review was conducted using Cochrane, Embase, and PubMed. Included studies reported primary data on adult patients undergoing S2AI screw fixation or traditional IS fixation for ASD. Primary outcomes of interest were rates of revision and complications, which included screw failure (fracture and loosening), symptomatic screw prominence, wound complications (dehiscence and infection), and L5-S1 pseudarthrosis. RESULTS Fifteen retrospective studies with a total of 1502 patients (iliac screws: 889 [59.2%]; S2AI screws: 613 [40.8%]) were included. Pooled analysis indicated that iliac screws had significantly higher odds of revision (17.1% vs 9.1%, OR = 2.45 [1.25-4.77]), symptomatic screw prominence (9.9% vs 2.2%, OR = 6.26 [2.75-14.27]), and wound complications (20.1% vs 4.4%, OR = 5.94 [1.55-22.79]). S2AI screws also led to a larger preoperative to postoperative decrease in pain (SMD = - 0.26, 95% CI = -0.50, - 0.011). CONCLUSION The findings from this review demonstrate higher rates of revision, symptomatic screw prominence, and wound complications with traditional iliac screws. Current data supports the use of S2AI screws specifically for ASD. PROSPERO ID CRD42022336515. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III.

Abstract
Adult spinal deformity (ASD) is a complex condition that combines scoliosis, kyphosis, pain, and postoperative range of motion limitation. The lack of a scale that can successfully capture this complex condition is a clinical challenge. We aimed to develop a disease-specific scale for ASD. The study included 106 patients (mean age; 68 years, 89 women) with ASD. We selected 29 questions that could be useful in assessing ASD and asked the patients to answer them. The factor analysis found two factors: the main symptom and the collateral symptom. The main symptom consisted of 10 questions and assessed activity of daily living (ADL), pain, and appearance. The collateral symptom consisted of five questions to assess ADL due to range of motion limitation. Cronbach's alpha was 0.90 and 0.84, respectively. The Spearman's correlation coefficient between the change of main symptom and satisfaction was 0.48 (p < 0.001). The effect size of Cohen's d for comparison between preoperative and postoperative scores was 1.09 in the main symptom and 0.65 in the collateral symptom. In conclusion, we have developed a validated disease-specific scale for ASD that can simultaneously evaluate the benefits and limitations of ASD surgery with enough responsiveness in clinical practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Effective measurement and monitoring of health status in patients with spine-related musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders are essential for providing appropriate care and improving outcomes. Minimal clinical datasets are standardized sets of key data elements and patient-centered outcomes that can be measured and recorded during routine clinical care. Our scoping review aimed to identify and map current evidence on minimal clinical datasets for measuring and monitoring health status in patients with spine-related MSK disorders in primary and outpatient healthcare settings. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING We followed the JBI (formerly Joanna Briggs Institute) methodology for scoping reviews. MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Index to Chiropractic Literature, MANTIS, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, and medRxiv preprint repository were searched from database inception to August 1, 2021. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts, full-text articles, and charted the evidence. Findings were synthesized and summarized descriptively. RESULTS After screening 5,583 citations and 301 full-text articles, 104 studies about 32 individual minimal clinical datasets were included. Most minimal clinical datasets were developed for patient populations with spine-involving inflammatory arthritis, nonspecific or degenerative spinal pain, and MSK disorders in general. The minimal clinical datasets varied substantially in terms of the author-reported time-to-complete (1-48 minutes) and the number of items (5-100 items). Fifty percent of the datasets involved healthcare professionals in their development process, and only 28% involved patients. Health domain items were most frequently linked to the components of activities and participation (43.9%) and body functions (28.6%), according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health. There is no standardized definition of minimal clinical datasets to measure and monitor health status of patients with spine-related MSK disorders in routine clinical practice. Common core elements identified were practicality, feasibility in a busy routine practice, time efficiency, and the capability to be used across different healthcare settings. CONCLUSION Due to the absence of a standard definition for minimal clinical datasets for patients with spine-related MSK disorders, there is a lack of consistency in the selection of key data elements and patient-centered outcomes that should be included. More research on the implementation and feasibility of minimal clinical datasets in routine care settings is warranted and needed. It is essential to involve all relevant partners in the development process of minimal clinical datasets to ensure successful implementation and adoption in routine primary care.

Abstract
Adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery aims to correct abnormal spinal curvature in adults, leading to improved functionality and reduced pain. However, this surgery is associated with various complications, one of which is proximal junctional failure (PJF). PJF can have a significant impact on a patient's quality of life, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of its causes and the development of effective management strategies. This review aims to provide an in-depth understanding of PJF in ASD surgery. PJF is a complex complication resulting from a multitude of factors including patient characteristics, surgical techniques, and postoperative management. Age, osteoporosis, overcorrection of sagittal alignment, and poor bone quality are identified as significant risk factors. The clinical implications of PJF are substantial, often requiring revision surgery and causing a considerable decrease in patients' quality of life. Prevention strategies include careful preoperative planning, appropriate patient selection, and optimization of surgical techniques. Treatment often necessitates a multifaceted approach, including surgical intervention and the management of underlying risk factors. Predictive modeling is an emerging field that may offer a promising avenue for the risk stratification of patients and individualized preventive strategies. A thorough understanding of PJF's pathogenesis, risk factors, and clinical implications is essential for surgeons involved in ASD surgery. Current preventive measures and treatment strategies aim to mitigate the risk and manage the complications of PJF, but the complication cannot be entirely prevented. Future research should focus on the development of more effective preventive and treatment strategies, and predictive models could be valuable in this pursuit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Optimization of perioperative pain interventions in lumbar spine surgery could reduce the incidence of acute and persistent postoperative pain and opioid consumption. Standardization in early outcome measurement provides a solid foundation for future clinical and research practices and should be integrated in core outcome sets for long-term treatment outcome evaluations. This scoping review provides an overview of outcomes used when evaluating early perioperative pain interventions after lumbar spine surgery. OBJECTIVES To create an overview of outcome domains and measurement instruments previously used in research on perioperative pain management for degenerative lumbar spine surgery. EVIDENCE REVIEW A scoping review was performed to identify articles comprising outcome evaluations in adult patients who undergo degenerative lumbar spine surgery, mentioning perioperative pain interventions. 75 articles were included for review. Data on study characteristics, outcome domains and measurement instruments were extracted and structured using the three-tiered hierarchy of Porter. FINDINGS 12 outcome domains were identified: pain intensity (93.3%), adverse events (76%), analgesic consumption (70.7%), length of stay (52%), patient satisfaction (24%), daily functioning (22.7%), (early) mobilization (22.7%), quality of life (12%), mortality (9.3%), quality of recovery (6.7%), physical function (4%), and quality of sleep (2.7%). 63 corresponding measurement instruments were found. CONCLUSIONS This review portrays an extensive overview of outcome measurements used in perioperative pain management in lumbar spine surgery. A lack of consensus on the set of indicators exists. This scoping review is a call for action to create consensus on how to evaluate perioperative pain interventions in degenerative lumbar spine surgery.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the participation restriction of adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients, and its relation with the impairments in body structure and function, and activity limitation, as this important information regarding the individual's perspective on the social impact of the disease on their life is presently not captured. METHODS Forty-three ASD patients participated in the study and completed the impact on participation and autonomy (IPA) questionnaire to assess the level of participation. Activity limitations and impairments were measured with the Balance Evaluation Systems Test (BESTest) and Scoliosis Research Society-22r (SRS-22). Also, age, body height, body weight, BMI, Mini-mental state examination and Cumulative Illness Rating Scale were assessed. A univariate linear regression analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between the IPA and the independent variables, whereas a multivariate analysis identified the significant predictive variables for the IPA questionnaire. RESULTS The univariate analysis identified performance on the BESTest and SRS-22 as significantly (p < 0.001) related to the IPA questionnaire. The multiple regression analysis revealed that the performance on BESTest (p = 0.073) and SRS-22 (p < 0.001) independently predicted the IPA questionnaire, explaining 73.5% of its variance. CONCLUSION To fully understand the impact of ASD on the individual's functioning, disability and health-status, it is suggested that questionnaires on participation to society should be considered, together with clinical postural tests (e.g. the BESTest) and questionnaires related to HRQOL (e.g. the SRS-22), in the ASD care path. This additional information should allow the surgeon to make a more informed selection of surgical patients.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Systematic review. PURPOSE Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a deformity of the trunk and chest and can cause a spectrum of pulmonary symptoms. However, no standardized measurement instrument exists. The aim of this systematic review is to identify and describe patient-reported and clinical measurement instruments used to evaluate pulmonary symptoms in patients with AIS. METHODS Studies published after 01.01.2000 were included in a systematic search. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and clinical measurement instruments for pulmonary symptoms were extracted as well as their measurement properties (floor-ceiling effects, validity, reliability, responsivity and interpretability). The Risk of Bias (RoB) was evaluated. RESULTS Out of 3146 studies, 122 were eligible for inclusion. Seven clinical measurement instruments, measuring 50 measurement parameters, were identified. Five PROMs for pulmonary symptoms were identified. Studies assessing the quality of measurement properties in the AIS population were not identified. As such, the RoB could not be determined. CONCLUSION No available adequate patent centric instruments were identified that measure pulmonary functioning and symptoms. Although clinical measurement instruments are regularly used, their use in routine practice does not seem feasible. The measurement properties of some identified PROMs seem promising; however, they have not been validated in an AIS population. As pulmonary symptoms in patients with AIS are still poorly understood, the development of such a construct and potentially a subsequent PROM to routinely measure pulmonary functioning and patient experience is recommended.
