Hemangiopericytoma of the orbit

Percutaneous embolization of an orbital hemangiopericytoma with Onyx facilitates its surgical excision

This is a case report on the surgical treatment of orbital hemangiopericytoma. The patient initially underwent an attempted excision of the tumor with significant hemorrhage elsewhere, which precluded its complete excision. Due to continued growth and pain, the patient underwent percutaneous embolization with Onyx-18 under fluoroscopic radiographic guidance. The patient continued to have pain, progressive enlargement of the tumor, and underwent surgical excision. The excision was noted to have minimal bleeding and was relatively easy to dissect and excise compared with the typical hemangiopericytoma. Embolization with Onyx-18 may be a useful preoperative treatment option for hemangiopericytomas and other vascular lesions of the orbit, and elsewhere.

Haemangiopericytoma of the orbit

Orbital haemangiopericytomas are ideally managed by complete surgical excision in the first instance. This is frequently not achieved, because difficulty in making the diagnosis preoperatively results in incisional biopsy and the highly vascular nature of the tumour makes complete excision difficult. A series of 12 patients with orbital haemangiopericytoma seen over a 23-year period is presented. The following combination of clinical and radiological features is suggestive of haemangiopericytoma. 1. Painless non-axial proptosis with downward displacement of the globe. 2. Intermittent upper lid swelling. 3. A soft, superiorly located mass with poorly defined borders, especially with a blue hue. 4. A superiorly located, rounded or elongated extraconal mass on CT, isodense with brain, with smooth, well-defined borders and moderate to marked enhancement with the injection of intravenous contrast medium. 5. Significant blush in all three phases of carotid angiography, without prominent arteriovenous shunting. Once haemangiopericytoma is suspected, complete surgical excision is recommended.

Hemangiopericytoma of the orbit: a clinicopathologic study of 30 cases

The clinical and pathologic features of 30 orbital hemangiopericytomas were reviewed. An effort was made to determine the clincopathologic characteristics that may correlate with the biologic behavior. Histopathologic criteria evaluated included degree of cellularity, nuclear atypia, mitotic activity, tumor size, and the presence of hemorrhage and necrosis. Histopathologically, 16 tumors were classified as benign, five as borderline, and nine as malignant. Follow-up information was obtained in 27 cases (mean duration of follow-up period was five and one-half years). Eight tumors recurred (30 per cent). Five patients died, four with widespread metastases (15 per cent) and one of unrelated causes. Tumors that recurred or metastasized were distributed among all three histologic groups. The interval between the onset of symptoms and metastasis for three of the four lethal tumors was 31 years, 28 years, and 8 1/2 years; in the fourth case it was unknown. For the entire series, the five-year actuarial survival rate was 89 per cent. Although the number of cases is too small to serve as a basis for firm conclusions, the lack of unequivocal correlation between the histologic features and clinical behavior is consistent with the unpredictable behavior of this neoplasm, as concluded by other investigators. Because of the apparent circumscription of most of these tumors, complete surgical excision rather than exenteration is recommended. Metastasis usually develops late in the clinical course of the disease, indicating that long-term follow-up studies are required before a cure can be assumed.

Orbital hemangiopericytoma: a report of a three-year-old child

A case of orbital hemangiopericytoma is described in a three-year-old child. Its clinical and microscopic differentiating features from other ocular and orbital tumors is discussed.

A light and electron microscopic study of a hemangiopericytoma of the prostate with local extension

A case of primary hemangiopericytoma of the prostate is reported. The patient presented with obstructive uropathy and was diagnosed as "benign prostatic hypertrophy." A transurethral resection was done and was diagnosed as "cellular leiomyoma." Obstructive symptoms recurred and skin and pubic bone involvement appeared 2 months later. Light and electron microscopy of the repeat transurethral resection and biopsy of the perineal mass confirmed the diagnosis of hemangiopericytoma of the prostate.

[Epidural hemangiopericytoma. A casuistic contribution to the differential diagnosis of angiomatous meningiomas]

The clinical presentation together with macroscopic and microscopic findings in a case of epidural fronto-parasagittal hemangiopericytoma occurring in a 59 years old female are reported. Pathogenesis, clinical and macroscopic findings, and microscopicaspects of this tumor aspected with the angioblastic (angiomatous) meningioma are discussed. The relevant literature is reviewed.
