Identification of Non-ionic Surfactants in Elements of the Aquatic Environment

Information concerning the use of non-ionic surfactants (NS) in household products is very scanty. Therefore, a qualitative determination of NS in raw sewage is an alternative source of information concerning the presence and manufacture of NS. The aim of this work was to identify NS in raw sewage (in Poznan and Blonie, both Poland) and treated sewage (in Blonie) and to compare the results with those obtained for river water (Warta in Poznan, Poland). LC-MS/MS was used for this purpose. The presence of 116 ethoxamers, being exclusively polydispersal alcohol ethoxylates (AE) containing alkyl moieties from C10 to C16 and C18, as well as 20 poly(ethylene glycols), was confirmed in the raw sewage, while 68 ethoxamers were found in the treated sewage, including 12 octylphenol ethoxylates. No nonylphenol ethoxylates were identified in the raw or treated sewage.

Direct spectrophotometric determination of alkylphenol polyethoxylate nonionic surfactants in wastewater

A new spectrophotometric method is proposed for direct determination of alkylphenol polyethoxylate, RO(CH(2)CH(2)O)(n)H (where R is alkylphenyl and n is the degree of polymerization), in wastewater. The method is based on the formation of ternary complex, Pb(II)-meso-tetra-(3,5-dibromo-4-hydrooxyphenyl)-Porphyrin (T(DBHP)P)-alkylphenol polyethoxylate (APE). Under optimum reaction conditions, T(DBHP)P reacts with lead(II) and APE to form a yellow ternary complex with the maximum absorption peak at 479 nm. The color reaction is rapidly completed and the absorbance remains stable for at least 24h under room temperature. The apparent molar absorption coefficients were 0.4-4.3 x 10(4) L mol(-1) cm(-1) for n=5-50. As little as 0.02 microg mL(-1) of APE can be detected. The effects of various substances on the determination of APE were also investigated in detail. It was found that all the studied co-existing substances, especially cationic and anionic surfactants, which always seriously interfere in some reported methods, could be tolerated in considerable amounts. The method offered the advantages of simplicity, rapidity, sensitivity and selectivity without any prior separation or extraction.

Determination of non-ionic surfactants and their biotransformation by-products adsorbed on alive activated sludge

A procedure has been developed for the determination of non-ionic surfactants (NS) adsorbed on particles of alive and dead activated sludge. The procedure also enables the determination of adsorption of major biodegradation by-products: short-chained ethoxylates, long- and short-chained PEG. The basis of measurement is the determination of NS concentration in a slurry of activated sludge and in a solution phase. The difference between these two concentrations represents the NS adsorbed on activated sludge. Separation of NS and their biotransformation by-products from samples and then on narrower fractions was performed by a sequential liquid-liquid extraction and precipitation with modified Dragendorff reagent. The indirect tensammetric technique (ITT) was applied for the final determination. The developed method was checked using the example of the treatment of the surfactant C12E10 (oxyethylated fatty alcohol) (C12E10) in the continuous flow activated sludge facility. No statistically significant accumulation of C12E10 on the alive activated sludge was detected, probably because of faster C12E10 fission than its adsorption. However, significant adsorption of the short-chained ethoxylates (including free alcohol) on the alive activated sludge was found, as well as statistically significant adsorption of long- and short-chained PEG. The adsorption of surfactant C12E10 and its biodegradation by-products on dead activated sludge was found to be higher than the species adsorption on alive activated sludge.

The acute toxicity of agricultural surfactants to the tadpoles of four Australian and two exotic frogs

Nonionic surfactants are frequently incorporated into pesticide formulations, and are therefore a group of chemicals to which amphibians may be exposed in agricultural or urban landscapes. However, little is known about the effects of surfactant exposure in amphibians. Feeding stage tadpoles of Bufo marinus, Xenopus laevis and four species of Australian frogs (Crinia insignifera, Heleioporus eyrei, Limnodynastes dorsalis and Litoria moorei) were exposed to nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE) and alcohol alkoxylate in static-renewal acute toxicity tests. All species exhibited nonspecific narcosis following exposure to both these surfactants. The 48-h EC50 values for NPE ranged between 1.1 mg/l (mild narcosis) and 12.1 mg/l (full narcosis). The 48-h EC50 values for alcohol alkoxylate ranged between 5.3 mg/l (mild narcosis) and 25.4 mg/l (full narcosis). Replicate acute toxicity tests with B. narinus exposed to NPE at 30 degrees C over 96 h indicated that the narcotic effects were not particularly time dependant. The mean 24, 48, 72, and 96-h EC50 (mild narcosis) values were 3.6, 3.7, 3.5 and 3.5 mg/l, respectively. The mean 24, 48, 72 and 96-h EC50 (full narcosis) were 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 and 4.0, respectively. Acute toxicity tests with B. marinus exposed to NPE at 30 degrees C under conditions of low dissolved oxygen (0.8-2.3 mg/l) produced a two to threefold increase in toxicity.
