Rupture of the tricuspid valve due to smashing the chest into the steering wheel

A 32-year-old man was urgently referred to our hospital with severe tricuspid insufficiency following a car accident. The completely flail anterior leaflet, due to the rupture of the papillary muscles, was revealed by a two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography. In the operation, we also detected a tear on the anterior leaflet and the rupture of numerous chordae tendineae of the other leaflets. Valve repair was not considered feasible, therefore the tricuspid valve was replaced with a 31 mm mechanical prosthesis. The patient's recovery from surgery was uneventful, and he was discharged on the seventh postoperative day.

Concomitant Traumatic Coronary Artery and Tricuspid Valve Injury: A Heterogeneous Presentation

Blunt thoracic trauma resulting in both tricuspid valve rupture and coronary artery injury is uncommon, encompasses a large spectrum of presentations and, therefore, can be difficult to diagnose. This report illustrates the heterogeneous presentation and clinical course of two patients with such a combination of cardiac injuries. The patient with associated right coronary artery dissection developed progressive right ventricular failure over a 12-year period before successful surgical repair, whereas another patient with left anterior descending coronary artery thrombosis required urgent operation for acute right ventricular dysfunction and hemodynamic decompensation.

[Traumatic rupture of tricuspid valve: report of 3 cases]

Tricuspide valve lesions due to non-penetrating trauma are rare and their diagnosis is difficult. Nevertheless, over 100 cases of post-traumatic valve regurgitation have been described in the last 35 years. We present 3 such cases diagnosed and operated at our center in the last 8 years.

Penetrating trauma to the tricuspid valve and ventricular septum: delayed repair

Penetrating cardiac trauma can result in a wide range of injuries to intracardiac structures. Missile injury, in particular, can cause damage in more than one cardiac chamber that may be difficult to identify at initial emergent operation. We report a case of late repair of traumatic ventricular septal defect and tricuspid valve perforation from gunshot wound. This case illustrates the importance of thorough examination of intracardiac anatomy during emergent and delayed repair for penetrating cardiac trauma.

Traumatic tricuspid valve regurgitation and cerebral emboli

We report a case of traumatic tricuspid valve regurgitation and late presentation with transient ischemic attacks caused by the presence of a right-to-left shunt through a small atrial septal defect.
