Abstract
We present the results of experimental and theoretical studies of fast anisotropic relaxation and rotational diffusion in the first electron excited state of biological coenzyme NADH in water-ethanol solutions. The experiments have been carried out by means of a novel polarization-modulation transient method and fluorescence polarization spectroscopy. For interpretation of the experimental results a model of the anisotropic relaxation in terms of scalar and vector properties of transition dipole moments has been developed based on the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. This model allows for the description of fast isotropic and anisotropic excited state relaxation under excitation of molecules by ultrafast laser pulses in transient absorption and upconversion experiments. The results obtained suggest that the dynamics of anisotropic rovibronic relaxation in NADH under excitation with 100 fs pump laser pulses can be characterised by a single vibrational relaxation time τv lying in the range of 2-15 ps and a single rotation diffusion time τr lying in the range of 100-450 ps, both depending on ethanol concentration. The dependence of the times τv and τr on the solution polarity (static permittivity) and viscosity has been determined and analyzed. Limiting values of the term P2(cos θ) describing the rotation of the transition dipole moment in the course of vibrational relaxation have been determined from experiments as a function of ethanol concentration and analyzed.

Abstract
Rotational reorientation times of a newly synthesized 2,5-bis(phenylethynyl)1,4-bis(dodecyloxy) benzene (DDPE) are experimentally determined in series of n-alkanes by employing steady state and time resolved fluorescence depolarization technique with a view to understand rotational dynamics of large non-polar solute molecule in non-polar solvents and few general solvents of different sizes and varying viscosity. It is observed that rotational reorientation times vary linearly as function of viscosity. The hydrodynamic stick condition describes the experimental results at low viscosities while the results tend to deviate significantly from it at higher viscosities. This is attributed to the possibility of long chains in solvents hosting a variety of chain defects (end-gauche, double-gauche, all-trans, kink, etc.) thereby reducing the effective length of the molecule, leading to a slightly reduced friction. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of Stokes-Einstein-Debye (SED) hydrodynamic theory as well as the quasi-hydrodynamic theories of Gierer-Wirtz (GW) and Dote-Kivelson-Shwartz (DKS). The predictions from these theories underestimate τr in the solvents employed in the study.

Abstract
We report on the fluorescence lifetime and rotational diffusion dynamics of 4-benzylamino-7-nitrobenzofurazan (BBD) in a series of 1-propanol/water binary solvent systems. The fluorescence lifetime of BBD increases monotonically with increasing 1-propanol concentration. The rotational diffusion dynamics of BBD also vary with solution 1-propanol content, but this variation is not monotonic. Comparison of the BBD rotational diffusion time constant to solution viscosity and 1-propanol composition reveals the presence of a solution composition dependence of solvent-solute interactions, with a relative decrease in solvent-solute interaction strength for solvent system compositions where the 1-propanol/water azeotrope is known to exist. These data point collectively to the existence of microscopic heterogeneity in these binary solvent systems.

Abstract
The optical characterization and polarized spectroscopy of oxazine 720, oxazine 750, and Nile blue were obtained in a nematic matrix. The interaction of these ionic dyes with the anisotropic surrounding and with that of the isotropic organic solvents was investigated and compared. The influence of the host nature on the molecular interaction of the guest molecules was also investigated. Dichroic ratios R and degree of anisotropy S of these ionic dyes in the liquid crystalline host were investigated by measuring the intensity of the absorption bands in the visible region of parallel aligned samples. The electro-optical effects of the guest-host systems were also investigated in an electro-optical system using polarized spectroscopic method based on homogeneous-homeotropic alignment.

Abstract
Fluorescence anisotropy decays of the 7-diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin C1 in various polar solvents of different viscosities and hydrogen bond donor/acceptor character have been recorded by means of the fluorescence upconversion and time-correlated single photon counting techniques. The resulting characteristic times for the rotational diffusion fall into two classes with regards to the viscosity-dependency: n-alcohols and "other" solvents. This deviation from the simple Stokes-Einstein-Debye model may be interpreted in terms of rotation of the coumarin molecule under two different hydrodynamic boundary-conditions ("stick" or "slip") in the two solvent classes. Possible explanations for this behaviour are discussed, and in particular solvent attachment and additional dielectric friction. Both these phenomena may in fact, under certain conditions, explain our findings. Our opinion, however, is that the dielectric friction model offers a more realistic picture of the additional rotational friction experienced by C1 in n-alcohols.

Abstract
Ethidium (E) is a powerful probe of DNA dynamics and DNA-mediated electron transfer (ET). Molecular dynamical processes, such as solvation and orientation, are important on the time scale of ET. Here, we report studies of the femtosecond and picosecond time-resolved dynamics of E, E with 2'deoxyguanosine triphosphate (GTP) in water, and E with 7-deaza-2'-deoxyguanosine triphosphate (ZTP) in water; E undergoes ET with ZTP but not GTP. These studies elucidate the critical role of relative orientational motions of the donor-acceptor complex on ET processes in solution. For ET from ZTP to E, such motions are in fact the rate-determining step. Our results indicate that these complexes reorient before ET. The time scale for the solvation of E in water is 1 ps, and the orientational relaxation time of E is 70 ps. The impact of orientational and solvation effects on ET between E and mononucleotides must be considered in the application of E as a probe of DNA ET.

Abstract
It is generally assumed that the rotational diffusion coefficients of fluorophores are independent of time subsequent to excitation, and that the rotational diffusion coefficients of the ground and the excited states are the same. We now describe a linkage between the extent of solvent relaxation and the rate of fluorescence depolarization. Specifically, if a fluorophore displays time-dependent solvent relaxation it may also show a time-dependent decrease in its rotational rate. A decreased rate of rotation could result from the increased interaction with polar solvent molecules which occurs as a result of solvent relaxation. The decays of anisotropy predicted from our model closely mimic those often observed for fluorophores which are bound to macromolecules. For example, the decays are more complex than a single exponential, and the time-resolved anisotropy can display a limiting value which does not decay to zero. The effect of solvent relaxation upon the rates of rotational diffusion is expected to be most dramatic for solvent-sensitive fluorophores in a viscous environment. These conditions are frequently encountered for fluorophore-macromolecule complexes. Consideration of the linkage between solvent relaxation and rotational diffusion leads to two unusual predictions. First even spherical fluorophores in an isotropic environment could display multi- or nonexponential decays of fluorescence anisotropy. Secondly, for the special case in which the fluorophore dipole moment decreases upon excitation, the theory predicts that the anisotropy decay rate may increase with time subsequent to pulsed excitation. The predictions of this theory are consistent with published data on the effects of red-edge excitation upon the apparent rotational rates of fluorophores in polar solvents.
