Abstract
The coherence length of the Frenkel excitons (Ncoh) is one of the most critical parameters governing many key features of supramolecular J-aggregates. Determining experimentally the value of Ncoh is a nontrivial task since it is sensitive to the technique/method applied, causing discrepancies in the literature data even for the same chemical compound and aggregation conditions. By using a combination of different experimental techniques including UV-vis-NIR, fluorescence emission, time-resolved photoluminescence, and transient absorption spectroscopies, we determined Ncoh values for J-aggregates of a cyanine dye. We found that the absorption spectroscopy alone - a widely used technique- fails in determining right value for Ncoh. The correct approach is based on the modification of photoluminescence lifetime and nonlinear response upon aggregation and careful analysis of the Stokes shift and electron-phonon coupling strength. This approach revealed that Ncoh of JC-1 J-aggregates ranges from 3 to 6.

Abstract
In this study, we probe into the roles of exciton oscillator strength and charge of J-aggregates as well as nanoparticle's surface capping ligands in dictating the plasmon-exciton interaction. We systematically compare the plasmon-exciton coupling strengths of two hybrid plexcitonic systems involving CTAB-capped hollow gold nanoprisms (HGNs) and two different cyanine dyes, TDBC and PIC, having very similar J-band spectral positions and linewidths, but different oscillator strengths and opposite charges. Both HGN-PIC and HGN-TDBC systems display large Rabi splitting energies which are found to be extremely dependent on dye-concentrations. Interestingly, for our plexciton systems we find that there is interplay between the exciton oscillator strength and the electrostatic interaction amid dyes and HGN-surfaces in dictating the coupling strength. The oscillator strength dominates at low dye-concentrations resulting in larger Rabi splitting in the HGN-PIC system while at high concentrations, a favorable electrostatic interaction between TDBC and CTAB-capped HGN results in larger exciton population of the HGN-surface and in turn larger Rabi splitting for the HGN-TDBC system than the HGN-PIC system even though TDBC has a lower oscillator strength than PIC. The trend in Rabi splitting is just reversed when the HGN surface is modified with a negatively charged polymer, confirming the role of electrostatic interactions in influencing the plasmon-exciton coupling strength.

Abstract
The effect of chiral metal complexes ([Co(en)(3)]I(3)·H(2)O, cis-[CoBr(NH(3))(en)(2)]Br(2), K[Co(edta)]·2H(2)O and [Ru(phen)(3)](PF(6))(2)) on the polymer-bound J-aggregates in aqueous mixtures of pesudoisocyanine (PIC) iodine and poly(acrylic acid, sodium)(PAAS) have been studied by UV-vis absorption, circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectra. At low concentration, the PIC monomers could self-assemble to form supermolecules by binding to each of the COO(-) groups on the polymer chains through electrostatic interactions. After the addition of chiral metal complexes to the formed PIC-PAAS J-aggregates, we found that only the chiral multiple π-conjugated phenanthroline metal complexes could transfer their metal-centered chiral information to the formed J-aggregates. The chiral J-aggregates showed a characteristic induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the visible region of J-band chromophore, and the ICD signals depend on the absolute configuration, concentration of the chiral multiple π-conjugated metal complexes, as well as temperature. More interestingly, the supramolecular chirality of the polymer supported PIC J-aggregates could be memorized even after the addition of an excess opposite chiral complex enantiomers. This is in sharp contrast to the behavior in the high concentrated NaCl induced PIC-J aggregates, in which the optical rotation of a mixture of two enantiomers varies linearly with their ratio.

Abstract
The effects of NaCl on the aggregation of two typical thiacarbocyanine dyes (3,3'-di(3-sulfopropyl)-4,5,4',5'-dibenzo-9-phenyl-thiacarbocyanine triethyl ammonium salt (Dye 1) and 3,3'-di(3-sulfopropyl)-4,5,4',5'-dibenzo-9-methyl-thiacarbocyanine triethyl ammonium salt (Dye 2)) in aqueous solution have been studied by using absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and 1H- and 23Na-NMR measurements. It is found that the J-aggregation of two dyes can be promoted by the addition of NaCl and that the effective coherence length of the J-aggregate is shorter than that obtained without NaCl. Fluorescence spectra demonstrate that the fluorescence intensities of the J-aggregates of two dyes are quenched by addition of NaCl. This is consistent with the decrease of the effective coherence length of J-aggregates of the two dyes in the presence of NaCl. 1H-NMR spectra of two dyes show that the Na(+) ions penetrate into the J-aggregates and replace the counterion (triethylammonium ions) in two dyes. The measurements of the chemical shifts of 23Na nuclei provide further information about the interaction between the Na(+) ions and dye anions in the J-aggregates of the two dyes. Due to this interaction, the electrostatic repulsion between the dye anions in the J-aggregates can be reduced and thus accelerate the aggregation of the two dyes in the presence of NaCl. The apparent association constants between Na(+) ions and dye molecules in J-aggregates of Dye 1 and Dye 2 estimated from the measured chemical shifts of 23Na nuclei are about 2.38 M(-1) and 1.35 M(-1), respectively.

Abstract
The photochemistry of cyanine J-aggregates on the surface of colloidal Ag nanoparticles is reported. The photochemistry is initiated through ultrafast photoexcitation of the plasmon band in Ag nanoparticles, producing an enhanced near-field that interacts with the J-aggregate monolayer. Through transient absorption spectroscopy, we show that photoexcitation of the plasmon in Ag nanoparticles leads to exciton dynamics that differ strongly from J-aggregates alone or for J-aggregate monolayers on bulk metal surfaces. Specifically, charge-separated states with a lifetime of approximately 300 ps between the J-aggregate and Ag colloid are formed. The reduction of the Ag nanoparticles is shown to be a multielectron process.
