The Close Interaction of a C-F Bond with an Amide Carbonyl: Crystallographic and Spectroscopic Characterization

The putative interaction of a C-F bond with an amide carbonyl has been an intriguing topic of interest in this century for reasons spanning basic physical organic chemistry to biochemistry. However, to date, there exist no examples of a close, well-defined interaction in which its unique aspects can be identified and exploited. Herein, we finally present an engineered system possessing an exceptionally tight C-F-amide interaction, allowing us to obtain spectroscopic, crystallographic, and kinetic details of a distinctive, biochemically relevant chemical system for the first time. In turn, we also explore Lewis acid coordination, C-F bond promotion of amide isomerization, enantiomerization, and ion protonation processes.

Chirogenesis and Pfeiffer Effect in Optically Inactive EuIII and TbIII Tris(β-diketonate) Upon Intermolecular Chirality Transfer From Poly- and Monosaccharide Alkyl Esters and α-Pinene: Emerging Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) and Circular Dichroism (CD)

We report emerging circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) at 4f-4f transitions when lanthanide (Eu^III and Tb^III) tris(β-diketonate) embedded to cellulose triacetate (CTA), cellulose acetate butyrate (CABu), D-/L-glucose pentamethyl esters (D-/L-Glu), and D-/L-arabinose tetramethyl esters (D-/L-Ara) are in film states. Herein, 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedionate (fod) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione (dpm) were chosen as the β-diketonates. The g_lum value of Eu(fod)₃ in CABu are +0.0671 at 593 nm (⁵D0→7F₁) and −0.0059 at 613 nm (⁵D0→7F₂), respectively, while those in CTA are +0.0463 and −0.0040 at these transitions, respectively. The g_lum value of Tb(fod)₃ in CABu are −0.0029 at 490 nm (⁵D4→7F₆), +0.0078 at 540 nm (⁵D4→7F₅), and −0.0018 at 552 nm (⁵D4→7F₅), respectively, while those in CTA are −0.0053, +0.0037, and −0.0059 at these transitions, respectively. D-/L-Glu and D-/L-Ara induced weaker g_lum values at 4f-4f transitions of Eu(fod)₃, Tb(fod)₃, and Tb(dpm)₃. For comparison, Tb(dpm)₃ in α-pinene showed clear CPL characteristics, though Eu(dpm)₃ did not. A surplus charge neutralization hypothesis was applied to the origin of attractive intermolecular interactions between the ligands and saccharides. This idea was supported from the concomitant opposite tendency in upfield ¹⁹F-NMR and downfield ¹H-NMR chemical shifts of Eu(fod)₃ and the opposite Mulliken charges between F-C bonds (fod) and H-C bonds (CTA and D-/L-Glu). An analysis of CPL excitation (CPLE) and CPL spectra suggests that (+)- and (–)-sign CPL signals of Eu^III and Tb^III at different 4f-4f transitions in the visible region are the same with the (+)-and (–)-sign exhibited by CPLE bands at high energy levels of Eu^III and Tb^III in the near-UV region.

Comparative absorption spectroscopy involving 4f-4f transitions to explore the kinetics of simultaneous coordination of uracil with Nd(III) and Zn(II) and its associated thermodynamics

The interaction of uracil with Nd(III) has been explored in presence and absence of Zn(II) using the comparative absorption spectroscopy involving the 4f-4f transitions in different solvents. The complexation of uracil with Nd(III) is indicated by the change in intensity of 4f-4f bands expressing in terms of significant change in oscillator strength and Judd-Ofelt parameters. Intensification of this bands became more prominent in presence of Zn(II) suggesting the stimulative effect of Zn(II) towards the complexation of Nd(III) with uracil. Other spectral parameters namely Slator-Condon (F(k)'s), nephelauxetic effect (β), bonding (b(1/2)) and percent covalency (δ) parameters are computed to correlate their simultaneous binding of metal ions with uracil. The sensitivities of the observed 4f-4f transitions towards the minor coordination changes around Nd(III) has been used to monitor the simultaneous coordination of uracil with Nd(III) and Zn(II). The variation of intensities (oscillator strengths and Judd-Ofelt parameters) of 4f-4f bands during the complexation has helped in following the heterobimetallic complexation of uracil. Rate of complexation with respect to hypersensitive transition was evaluated. Energy of activation and thermodynamic parameters for the complexation reaction were also determined.

Lanthanide Class of a Trinuclear Enantiopure Helical Architecture Containing Chiral Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, and Properties

The pinene-bipyridine carboxylic derivatives (+)- and (-)-HL, designed to form configurationally stable lanthanide complexes, proved their effectiveness as chiral building blocks for the synthesis of lanthanide-containing superstructures. Indeed a self-assembly process takes place with complete diastereoselectivity between the enantiomerically pure ligand L(-) and Ln(III) ions (La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er), thus leading to the quantitative formation of a trinuclear supramolecular architecture with the general formula [Ln(3)(L)(6)(mu(3)-OH)(H(2)O)(3)](ClO(4))(2) (abbreviated as tris(Ln[L](2))). This class of C(3)-symmetrical compounds was structurally characterized in the solid state and solution. Electrospray (ES) mass spectrometric and (1)H NMR spectroscopic analyses indicated that the trinuclear species are maintained in solution (CH(2)Cl(2)) and are stable in the investigated concentration range (10(-2)-10(-6) m). The photophysical properties of the ligand HL and its tris(Ln[L](2)) complexes were studied at room temperature and 77 K, thus demonstrating that the metal-centered luminescence is well sensitized both for the visible and near-IR emitters. The chiroptical properties of tris(Ln[L](2)) complexes were investigated by means of circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). A high CD activity is displayed in the region of pi-pi* transitions of bipyridine. CPL spectra of tris(Eu[(+)-L](2)) and tris(Tb[(+)-L](2)) present large dissymmetry factors g(em) for the sensitive transitions of Eu(III) ((5)D(0)-->(7)F(1), g(em)=-0.088) and Tb(III) ((5)D(4)-->(7)F(5), g(em)=-0.0806). The self-recognition capabilities of the system were tested in the presence of artificial enantiomeric mixtures of the ligand. (1)H NMR spectra identical to those of the enantiomerically pure complexes and investigations by CD spectroscopic analysis reveal an almost complete chiral self-recognition in the self-assembly process, thus leading to mixtures of homochiral trinuclear structures.

Structural and NMR investigations of the ternary adducts of twenty α-amino acids and selected dipeptides with a chiral, diaqua–ytterbium complex

A detailed investigation of the nature of the binding of each of the 20 common alpha-amino acids and various selected dipeptides to a chiral, diaqua-ytterbium complex in aqueous solution has been carried out. Analysis of the dipolar 1H NMR paramagnetic shifts suggests that the alpha-amino acids form a common chelated structure within a nine-coordinate mono-capped square antiprismatic coordination environment, with the amine N axially disposed. Crystal structures of nine chelated YbL1-amino acid adducts (Gly, Ala, Ser, Thr, Met) confirm this. The ternary complexes with dipeptides (e.g. Gly-Ala, Gly-Ser, Gly-Met, Gly-Asp, Gly-Asn, Gly-His, Ser-Met, Asp-Phe, His-Gly) also favour the terminal amine as the axial donor with the proximate amide group binding to generate a five-ring chelate. Evidence for chelation through side-chain functionality was found only in the case of N-terminal Asp. The chiral environment about the ytterbium ion upon amino acid binding has also been probed using near-IR circular dichroism spectroscopy.
