Effect of a sublethal concentration of zinc on an aggregating pheromone system in the zebrafish, Brachydanio rerio (Hamilton-Buchanan)

Attractiveness of food and avoidance from contamination as conflicting stimuli to habitat selection by fish

Habitat selection by fish is the outcome of a choice between different stimuli. Typically, the presence of food tends to attract organisms, while contamination triggers an avoidance response to prevent toxic effects. Given that both food and contaminants are not homogeneously distributed in the environment and that food can be available in contaminated zones, a key question has been put forward in the present study: does a higher availability of food in contaminated areas interfere in the avoidance response to contaminants regardless of the contamination level? Tilapia fry (Oreochromis sp.; 2.5-3.0 cm and 0.5-0.8 g) were exposed to two different effluent samples, diluted along a free-choice, non-forced exposure system simulating a contamination gradient. Initially, avoidance to the effluents was checked during a one hour exposure. Afterwards, food was added to the system so that the availability of food increased with the increase in the level of contamination, and the avoidance response to contamination was checked during another hour. Results clearly showed a concentration-dependent avoidance response for both effluents during the first hour (i.e., with no food). However, in presence of the food, the avoidance pattern was altered: organisms were propelled to intermittently move towards contaminated areas where food availability was higher. The incursions were taken regardless of the potential risk linked to the toxic effects. In conclusion, even when the risk of toxicity was imminent, tilapia fry were more intensively stimulated by the attractiveness of the food than by repulsion to the contamination.

Cadmium-induced olfactory dysfunction in rainbow trout: Effects of binary and quaternary metal mixtures

A functioning olfactory response is essential for fish to be able to undertake essential behaviors. The majority of work investigating the effects of metals on the olfactory response of fish has focused on single-metal exposures. In this study we exposed rainbow trout to cadmium, copper, nickel, zinc, or a mixture of these four metals at or below the current Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment guidelines for the protection of aquatic life. Measurement of olfactory acuity using an electro-olfactogram demonstrated that cadmium causes significant impairment of the entire olfactory system, while the other three metals or the mixture of all four metals did not. Binary mixtures with cadmium and each of the other metals demonstrated that nickel and zinc, but not copper, protect against cadmium-induced olfactory dysfunction. Testing was done to determine if the protection from cadmium-induced olfactory dysfunction could be explained by binding competition between cadmium and the other metals at the cell surface, or if the protection could be explained by an up-regulation of an intracellular detoxification pathway, namely metallothionein. This study is the first to measure the effects of binary and quaternary metal mixtures on the olfactory response of fish, something that will aid in future assessments of the effects of metals on the environment.

The zebrafish's swim to fame as an experimental model in biology

The zebrafish has long been the favorite organism in many scientific disciplines. Although its attributes as a model were expounded for many years and thus were no secret, the zebrafish sat in the wings while other more popular vertebrates such as chick, amphibians, and mouse were examined at length. We cannot say there was a resurgence in popularity, but more an explosion of research utilizing the zebrafish beginning in the late 1970s when investigators at the University of Oregon began using it as their model in neuroscience. Prior to this reawakening, the zebrafish was one of the significant organisms in the study of teratology and toxicology, development, and, to some extent, behavior. Recently, however, the field of zebrafish genetics has gained immense popularity and success, in part owing to the fact that zebrafish are diploid and are amenable to genetic manipulations. Here we present an overview of the multidisciplinary research that has laid some of the foundation of our present understanding of the biochemical, cell biological, and molecular genetic events accompanying zebrafish development.
