Abstract
Reproductive biology is an important topic that is well explored in many vertebrates, but information about frogs' reproductive mechanisms could be improved. Therefore, this review aims to provide organized and specific information on frog reproduction. First, we developed schemes that illustrate the general information regarding reproductive biological mechanisms in frogs in a specific way. Then, we described the physiological, histological, and morphological mechanisms of each organ of the reproductive system of male and female frogs. Finally, this manuscript may contribute to a broader understanding of anuran reproductive biology. Since, understanding frogs' reproductive system permits one to make a comparison with reproduction with other anurans.

Abstract
This issue is dedicated to the late Professor Giovanni Chieffi, and this article is an overview of the research on Comparative Endocrinology of reproduction using Rana esculenta (alias Pelophylax esculentus) as a model system. Starting from the early 1970s till today, a large quantity of work have been conducted both in the fields of experimental endocrinology and in the definition of the diffuse neuroendocrine system, with a major focus on the increasing role of regulatory peptides. The various aspects investigated concerned the histological descriptions of principal endocrine glands of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, the localization and distribution in the HPG of several different substances (i.e. neurosteroids, hypothalamic peptide hormones, pituitary gonadotropins, gonadal sex steroids, and other molecules), the determination of sex hormone concentrations in both serum and tissues, the hormone manipulations, as well as the gene and protein expression of steroidogenic enzymes and their respective receptors. All together these researches, often conducted considering different periods of the annual reproductive cycle of the green frog, allowed to understand the mechanism of cascade control/regulation of the HPG axis of R. esculenta, characterizing the role of different hormones in the two sexes, and testing the hypotheses about the function of single hormones in different target organs. It becomes evident from the review that, in their simplest form, several features of this species are specular as compared to those of other vertebrate species and that reproduction in this frog species is either under endogenous multi-hormonal control or by a wide array of different factors. Our excursus of this research, spanning almost five decades, shows that R. esculenta has been intensively and successfully used as an animal model in reproductive endocrinology as well as several field studies such as those involving environmental concerns that focus on the effects of endocrine disruptors and other environmental contaminants.

Abstract
Vitellogenin (Vtg) is a precursor protein of egg yolk proteins in oviparous and ovoviviparous vertebrates. Except in a case of exposure to estrogenic endocrine disruptors, Vtg is a female-specific protein and could be used as a molecular marker for sex identification. This would be especially useful in the case of the endangered European cave salamander Proteus anguinus in which sexes are indistinguishable according to external morphology, which hinders the establishment of a successful captive breeding program. Here we describe the identification, partial characterization, and purification of Vtg from P. anguinus. Vtg was identified in the plasma of a vitellogenic proteus female with visible oocytes. The identification of this protein was accomplished by mass spectrometry analysis. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis revealed proteus Vtg as a mix of 190 kDa isoforms with isoelectric points in the pH range 5.3-6.0. Vtg was purified from proteus blood by gel filtration followed by anion-exchange chromatography. Using specific staining of SDS-PAGE gels, the Vtg was found to be phosphorylated and lipidated. Unlike the case in some other aquatic vertebrates, in P. anguinus, Vtg was not present in detectable amounts in cutaneous mucus. Degradation of oocytes in the captive vitellogenic female was accompanied by simultaneous decrease of Vtg concentration. Over a period of 10 months, the concentration of Vtg dropped from maximal to sub-detectable. Our results show that Vtg is a promising molecular marker for sex identification and ovary maturation in P. anguinus, which could contribute to the development of a viable program for captive reproduction of this unique species.

Abstract
SummaryThe aim of the present study was to investigate the physiological role and the expression pattern of heterologous gap junctions during Xenopus laevis vitellogenesis. Dye transfer experiments showed that there are functional gap junctions at the oocyte/follicle cell interface during the vitellogenic process and that octanol uncouples this intercellular communication. The incubation of vitellogenic oocytes in the presence of biotinylated bovine serum albumin (b-BSA) or fluorescein dextran (FDX), showed that oocytes develop stratum of newly formed yolk platelets. In octanol-treated follicles no sign of nascent yolk sphere formation was observed. Thus, experiments in which gap junctions were downregulated with octanol showed that coupled gap junctions are required for endocytic activity. RT-PCR analysis showed that the expression of connexin 43 (Cx43) was first evident at stage II of oogenesis and increased during the subsequent vitellogenic stages (III, IV and V), which would indicate that this Cx is related to the process that regulates yolk uptake. No expression changes were detected for Cx31 and Cx38 during vitellogenesis. Based on our results, we propose that direct gap junctional communication is a requirement for endocytic activity, as without the appropriate signal from surrounding epithelial cells X. laevis oocytes were unable to endocytose VTG.

Abstract
In the frog, the fat body is the largest body lipid deposit and is associated with the gonad. The aim of the present work was to investigate the fine structure of the fat body at different periods of the annual cycle and during prolonged starvation. Results indicate that fat body cells of Rana esculenta caught in autumn and after winter hibernation resemble mammalian adipocytes of white adipose tissue and contain markers of adipose tissue, such as S-100 protein and lipoproteinlipase. However, unlike mammalian adipocytes, fat body adipocytes consistently show small lipid droplets associated with their single, large lipid deposits, a lack of a definite external lamina, and the presence of cellular prolongations and spicula at their surfaces. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy in association with lanthanum tracer experiments suggest that in fat body adipocytes a vesicular-tubular system connects the cytoplasm and the interstitial space. In June (i.e., during the reproductive period), fat body adipocytes appear to have lost much of their lipid deposit and adjacent adipocytes show interdigitation of their plasma membranes and prominent Golgi complexes. In starved frogs, fat body cells can be almost devoid of lipid and in regression to a near-mesenchymal state. Nevertheless, these fat bodies still contain lipoproteinlipase activity (approximately 45% of that found in lipid-filled ones), indicating persistent adipose differentiation of the cells therein. Results presented here show that the R. esculenta fat body is an adipose organ undergoing reversible extreme changes in adipocyte fat content, which are associated with definite ultrastructural features. The fat body represents a suitable model for studying adipose tissue under different and extreme physiological conditions.

Abstract
GnRH-like material has been identified using HPLC followed by RIA in the ovary of Rana esculenta. During the reproductive cycle three immunoreactive GnRH peaks were eluted. One of them coeluted with s-GnRH, the other two forms between GnRH and cII-GnRH. During the recovery phase s-GnRH immunoreactivity disappears. By immunocytochemistry, cII-GnRH immunostaining was localized to granulosa cells while s-GnRH was present in the perinuclear zone of the oocytes.

Abstract
In female frogs (Rana Esculenta) during gametogenesis the cholesterol synthesized in the liver by 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase is mostly exported into the blood and taken up by the oocytes. In order to understand the fate of the neosynthesized cholesterol, female and male frogs and estrogenized male controls were injected with the labelled precursor 14C mevalonate. In females and in estrogenized controls, mevalonate-derived radioactivity is found in a plasmatic lipoprotein that has been identified as vitellogenin by immunological detection. The increased 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase activity present in females in Fall is likely to be committed to provide cholesterol for the lipidation of this cholesterol-rich protein.

Abstract
Females of the giant swamp frog Dicroglossus occipitalis were captured in Zaïre close to the equator in the course of 1 month. During this period, females with fully developed eggs were found, together with females of which the eggs were still in the first developmental stages. A close relationship was established between the maturation of the eggs and the studied gonadal factors: the gonadosomatic index, the oviduct weight, plasma estradiol-17 beta (E2) concentrations, plasma testosterone concentrations, and the total ovarian E2 concentrations. At the level of the thyroidal axis, the studied factors (plasma thyroxine (T4), plasma triiodothyronine (T3), plasma T3/T4 ratio, T4 and T3 concentrations, and the T3/T4 ratio in the thyroids and the 5'-monodeiodination activity (5'-D-activity) in the skin and kidney homogenates) did not show parallel changes with the maturation process of the eggs. These results indicate that no causal relation has to exist between the annual variation in thyroid hormones and the annual reproductive patterns as found in frogs from the tropical or temperate climatic region.
