Abstract
Cuticular lipids in terrestrial arthropods are not only essential for desiccation resistance; they also play an important role as chemical signals for intra- and interspecific communication (pheromones and kairomones, respectively). Most of the studies on cuticular lipid research was dedicated to one class of arthropods, the insects. This type of research on the class arachnids is poorly developed, and the majority of studies has listed the compounds present in cuticular extracts, and, in some cases, compared the lipid profiles of different life stages (juveniles, adults). Consequently, we reviewed in relation to lipids description, biosynthesis, and transport of spiders. To illustrate a novel concept of lipid transportation, a scheme is now presented to show the hypothetical transport pathways of hydrocarbon and free fatty acids to cuticle in spiders. These concepts are taken from the knowledge of different arachnids to obtain a general illustration on the biosynthesis and transport of hemolymphatic lipids to the cuticle in spider.

Abstract
In social Hymenoptera, fertility and fertility signalling are often under identical hormonal control, and it has been suggested that such hormonal pleiotropies can help to maintain signal honesty. In the common wasp Vespula vulgaris, for example, fertile queens have much higher juvenile hormone (JH) titers than workers, and JH also controls the production of chemical fertility cues present on the females’ cuticle. To regulate reproductive division of labour, queens use these fertility cues in two distinct ways: as queen pheromones that directly suppress the workers’ reproduction as well as to mark queen eggs and enable the workers to recognize and police eggs laid by other workers. Here, we investigated the hormonal pleiotropy hypothesis by testing if experimental treatment with the JH analogue methoprene could enable the workers to lay eggs that evade policing. In support of this hypothesis, we find that methoprene-treated workers laid more eggs, and that the chemical profiles of their eggs were more queen-like, thereby causing fewer of their eggs to be policed compared to in the control. Overall, our results identify JH as a key regulator of both reproduction and the production of egg marking pheromones that mediate policing behaviour in eusocial wasps.

Abstract
In insect societies, both queens and workers produce chemicals that reliably signal caste membership and reproductive status. The mechanisms that help to maintain the honesty of such queen and fertility signals, however, remain poorly studied. Here we test if queen signal honesty could be based on the shared endocrine control of queen fertility and the production of specific signals. In support of this “hormonal pleiotropy” hypothesis, we find that in the common wasp, application of methoprene (a juveline hormone analogue) caused workers to acquire a queen-like cuticular hydrocarbon profile, resulting in the overproduction of known queen pheromones as well as some compounds typically linked to worker fertility. By contrast, administration of precocene-I (a JH inhibitor) had a tendency to have the opposite effect. Furthermore, a clear gonadotropic effect of JH in queens was suggested by the fact that circulating levels of JH were ca. 2 orders of magnitude higher in queens than those in workers and virgin, non-egg-laying queens, even if methoprene or precocene treatment did not affect the ovary development of workers. Overall, these results suggest that queen signal honesty in this system is maintained by queen fertility and queen signal production being under shared endocrine control.

Abstract
Blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are typically the first insects to arrive at human remains and carrion. Predictable succession patterns and known larval development of necrophagous insects on vertebrate remains can assist a forensic entomologist with estimates of a minimum post-mortem interval (PMImin) range. However, adult blow flies are infrequently used to estimate the PMImin, but rather are used for a confirmation of larval species identification. Cuticular hydrocarbons have demonstrated potential for estimating adult blow fly age, as hydrocarbons are present throughout blow fly development, from egg to adult, and are stable structures. The goal of this study was to identify hydrocarbon profiles associated with the adults of a North American native blow fly species, Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) and a North American invasive species, Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart). Flies were reared at a constant temperature (25°C), a photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) (h), and were provided water, sugar and powdered milk ad libitum. Ten adult females from each species were collected at day 1, 5, 10, 20, and 30 post-emergence. Hydrocarbon compounds were extracted and then identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. A total of 37 and 35 compounds were detected from C. macellaria and Ch. rufifacies, respectively. There were 24 and 23 n-alkene and methyl-branched alkane hydrocarbons from C. macellaria and Ch. rufifacies, respectively (10 compounds were shared between species), used for statistical analysis. Non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis and permutational multivariate analysis of variance were used to analyze the hydrocarbon profiles with significant differences (P<0.001) detected among post-emergence age cohorts for each species, and unique hydrocarbon profiles detected as each adult blow fly species aged. This work provides empirical data that serve as a foundation for future research into improving PMImin estimates made by forensic practitioners and potentially increase the use of adult insects during death investigations.

Abstract
The cuticular and internal lipid composition in Calliphora vomitoria larvae, pupae, and male and female adults was studied. The free fatty acid (FA) compositions of the lipids were chemically characterized using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-electron impact mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Analyses of cuticular extracts from larvae, pupae, and male and female adults revealed that the carbon numbers of the acids ranged from C7:0 to C22:0, from C8:0 to C24:0, from C7:0 to C24:0 and from C7:0 to C22:0 respectively. The internal lipids of C. vomitoria larvae, pupae, male and female adults contained FAs ranging from C8:0 to C20:0, from C9:0 to C22:0, from C8:0 to C24:0 and from C9:0 to C22:0 respectively. Nine FAs with odd-numbered carbon chains from C7:0 to C21:0 were identified in the cuticular lipids of the larvae. The internal lipids of C. vomitoria larvae contained 8 odd-numbered FAs ranging from C9:0 to C19:0. Eight odd-numbered FAs from C9:0 to C21:0 were identified in the cuticular and internal lipids of pupae, while nine such FAs were found in the cuticular lipids of male and female adults. The internal lipids of adult males and females respectively contained nine and seven odd-numbered FAs, while both larvae and pupae contained eight such compounds. Eight unsaturated FAs were identified in the cuticular lipids of larvae, adult males and females and also in the internal lipids of females. Seven unsaturated FAs were identified in the cuticular lipids of pupae. The internal lipids of larvae, pupae and males contained 10, 11 and 12 unsaturated FAs respectively. Developmental changes were found both in the amounts of extracted cuticular and internal FAs and in their profiles. Four cuticular FAs (C7:0, C9:0, C10:0 and C15:1), identified as being male-specific, were either absent in the female cuticle or present there only in trace amounts. Cuticular and internal extracts obtained from larvae, pupae, adult males and females were tested for their potential antimicrobial activity. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of extracts against reference strains of bacteria and fungi were determined. Antimicrobial activity was the strongest against Gram-positive bacteria; Gram-negative bacteria, on the other hand, turned out to be resistant to all the lipids tested. Overall, the activities of the internal lipids were stronger. All the lipid extracts were equally effective against all the fungal strains examined. In contrast, crude extracts containing both cuticular and internal lipids displayed no antifungal activity against the entomopathogenic fungus Conidiobolus coronatus, which efficiently killed adult flies, but not larvae or pupae.

Abstract
The cost of sexual interactions, usually expressed as a reduction of life-span, is a fundamental but poorly understood aspect of life. According to a widely accepted view, a rise in the "pro-aging" juvenile hormone (JH) might contribute to the decrease of life span caused by sexual interactions. We tested this hypothesis using the linden bug Pyrrhocoris apterus by removing the corpus allatum (CA), the source of JH. If JH is causally involved in the cost of sexual interactions, then the absence of CA (JH) should decrease the negative effect of sexual interactions on survival. As expected, ablating the CA significantly prolonged life-span of both virgin females and virgin males. Mated insects of both sexes lived significantly shorter than virgins. However, contrary to prediction, the decrease of life span by sexual interactions was similar in control and CA-ablated males, and was even enhanced in CA-ablated females. Another unexpected finding was that males paired with CA-ablated females lived almost as long as virgin males and significantly longer than did males paired with control females, although ablating the female CA did not cause any decrease in mating activity. On the other hand, females paired with CA-ablated males lived only slightly longer than did females paired with control males. These results highlight several important points. (1) In both genders, the negative effect of sexual interactions on insect's survival is not mediated by the insect's own CA. (2) The male CA has only minor effect on female survival, while (3) the female CA (JH) is principally responsible for the sex-induced reduction in the male survival.

Abstract
In 1959, P. Karlson and M. Lüscher introduced the term 'pheromone', broadly used nowadays for various chemicals involved in intraspecific communication. To demonstrate the term, they depicted the situation in termite societies, where king and queen inhibit the reproduction of nest-mates by an unknown chemical substance. Paradoxically, half a century later, neither the source nor the chemical identity of this 'royal' pheromone is known. In this study, we report for the first time the secretion of polar compounds of proteinaceous origin by functional reproductives in three termite species, Prorhinotermes simplex, Reticulitermes santonensis and Kalotermes flavicollis. Aqueous washes of functional reproductives contained sex-specific proteinaceous compounds, virtually absent in non-reproducing stages. Moreover, the presence of these compounds was clearly correlated with the age of reproductives and their reproductive status. We discuss the putative function of these substances in termite caste recognition and regulation.

Abstract
In many social insects the relationship between reproductive dominance and physiological correlates is poorly understood. Recent evidence now strongly suggests that cuticular hydrocarbons are important in reproductive differentiation in these societies where they are used as signals of ovarian activity in reproductive females. In this study we investigated the relationship between reproductive dominance, size of the corpora allata (CA, producer of Juvenile Hormone, JH) and the proportions of cuticular hydrocarbons present on the cuticle in overwintering foundresses and both associative (polygynous) and solitary (monogynous) pre-emergence colonies of the social wasp Polistes dominulus. Size of the CA was positively correlated with ovarian development in polygynous colonies. In contrast, solitary foundresses possessed significantly smaller CAs than dominant foundresses from polygynous nests, yet ovarian activity was similar for both female types. CA size variation was associated with variation in cuticular hydrocarbon proportions. Overwintering, solitary, dominant and subordinate (from associative nests) females all possessed distinctive cuticular chemical profiles revealed by multivariate discriminant analyses. Our data indicate that the social environment strongly affects reproductive physiology in this wasp, and we discuss the role of cuticular hydrocarbons in reproductive signaling in P. dominulus and other social insects.

Abstract
In many species of social insects, the cuticular hydrocarbons of adults vary with both colony identity and individual physiology (oogenesis). Such variations have been shown in some ants and social wasps to function in nestmate recognition, but as yet there is no demonstration of their use by workers to recognize egg layers. We report that in the ant Myrmecia gulosa, workers can discriminate queens and fertile workers from infertile individuals based on distinctive blends of long-chained hydrocarbons present both on the cuticle and in the postpharyngeal gland. The purified hydrocarbon fraction of cuticular extracts from queens elicited high interest in workers, unlike the nonhydrocarbon fraction. However, both fractions were necessary to trigger a response of maximal intensity. In contrast, extracts of mandibular and Dufour glands from queens or infertile workers were not treated differentially by workers. We suggest that cuticular hydrocarbons function as pheromones allowing for recognition of the queen as well as egg-laying workers.

Abstract
The role of ecdysteroids in the regulation of dominance and reproduction in social Hymenoptera is little explored. In the current study we compared ecdysteroid titers in hemolymph of individual queen and worker bumble bees (Bombus terrestris) that differ in their behavior, reproductive status and social environment. Egg-laying queens that head colonies and have ovaries exhibiting all stages of follicle development, had a higher ecdysteroid titer than virgin queens whose ovaries contained only follicles at initial stages. In workers, the relationship between ecdysteroid titers and follicle development appears to be more complex and to be influenced by the bee's social status and social environment. Shortly after emergence, young workers had only follicles at the initial stages of oogenesis and they exhibited a low ecdysteroid titer. No significant correlation was detected between ovary status and ecdysteroid titer in workers, with some workers showing activated ovaries but low ecdysteroid titers. However, at six days of age, a trend towards higher ecdysteroid titer was observed for workers in queenless groups, a condition characterized by rapid follicle development relative to queenright conditions. In these queenless groups, high social status was associated with high ecdysteroid titers. By contrast, in queenright workers ecdysteroid titers were low, even for bees with presumably high social status that had activated ovaries and were observed performing oviposition behavior. This study suggests that ecdysteroids are involved in regulation of reproduction in B. terrestris.

Abstract
Reproductive division of labour is regulated behaviourally in social insects lacking morphologically specialized castes. The directional nature of dominance interactions shows that recognition occurs, but little is known about its basis. In the queenless ant Dinoponera quadriceps , the top worker in the hierarchy ('alpha') mates and produces offspring in each colony, while other workers remain virgin. Dominant ants frequently rub one antenna of subordinates against their own cuticle, and alpha and infertile nest-mates consistently differ in their relative proportions of the cuticular hydrocarbon 9-hentriacontene (9-C31). The second-ranking 'beta' occasionally lays unfertilized eggs and we show that she has less 9-C31 than the alpha but more than infertile workers. To investigate further the link between 9-C31 and ovarian activity, we experimentally removed alpha workers (n =11 individuals) and used solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with gas chromatography to measure changes in 9-C31 on live beta workers which attained alpha status. The proportion of 9-C31 on the replacement alpha increased significantly after six weeks, in parallel with her gain in fecundity. We discuss whether 9-C31 provides honest information about egg-laying ability, enabling ants to recognize the different classes of nest-mates involved in reproductive conflicts. Such fertility cues could reliably underpin the antagonistic interactions occurring in insect societies.

Abstract
The cuticular hydrocarbons from adult Phormia regina (Meigen) were characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Both sexes had similar components in nearly identical quantities, consisting of complex mixtures of saturated n-, monomethyl- and dimethylalkanes from 23 to 33 total carbons. Although no diet-, age-, or sex-specific differences were observed, cuticular hydrocarbons were shown to be involved in copulatory behavior. Hydrocarbon profiles of wild, compared to laboratory reared flies, showed no major differences. Behaviorally, males responded the same to dead decoys of either sex. Removal of the hydrocarbons, using hexane, from either male or female decoys, did not affect the number of mating strikes, but markedly reduced the number of copulatory attempts and the amount of time males spent mounted on either decoy. House fly, Musca domestica L., males when paired with a female M. domestica decoy produced copulatory attempts: whereas, when P. regina males were placed with M. domestica female decoys, there were no copulatory attempts. It is concluded that the cuticular hydrocarbons of P. regina function as species-specific but not sex-specific mating cues and elicit species-specific copulatory behavior in males.

Abstract
Oocyte development during the first vitellogenic cycle of Coelotes terrestris and Tegenaria domestica is described. Under the present conditions, this development took about 40 days during which the oocytes went through six stages of maturation. For the first time presence of ecdysteroids is reported in adult females of spiders. Hemolymphatic ecdysteroid peaks were observed in both species at the transition between previtellogenesis and vitellogenesis. 20-Hydroxyecdysone and ecdysone were present in slightly different ratios in C. terrestris as well as T. domestica. These data largely agree with current views of ovarian development in Arthropods.
