Gold Nanoparticles (AuNPs) as Reactive Matrix for Detection of Trace Levels of HCN in Air by Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (LDI-MS)

Under direct laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometric conditions, the irradiation of target spots made of gold nanoparticle residues generates a series of peaks at m/z 197, 394, 591… representing Au_n^- ions (n = 1-3). In contrast, spectra recorded from gold nanoparticles directly mixed with an alkali cyanide exhibited an additional peak at m/z 249, indicating an abundant generation of gaseous [Au(CN)₂]^- ions upon irradiation. The relative intensity of the m/z 249 peak surged when the amount of cyanide in the mixture was increased. Most remarkably, a peak at m/z 249 was observed even from neat AuNPs upon irradiation, if a nearby spot, which was not irradiated, happened to bear a cyanide sample. We postulated that traces of HCN emanating from the headspace of aqueous cyanide solution during the sample-plate preparation is sufficient to convert gold to AuCN, which is subsequently detected as [Au(CN)₂]^-. Further experiments demonstrated that the relative intensity of the m/z 249 peak diminishes exponentially as the AuNP spot becomes more distant from the putative HCN source. Eventually, the method was developed as an efficient procedure to detect HCN or alkali cyanides. Using KCN, the detection limits were determined to be below 10 pg of CN^- per spot. The method also demonstrated that, upon crushing, the seeds or roots of certain fruits and vegetables such as apple, peach, radish, and cassava, but not carrot, release HCN in amounts detectable by this method. Analysis of gold(I/III)-complexes by HPLC-ICP-MS demonstrates gold(III) stability in surface waters

Understanding the form in which gold is transported in surface- and groundwaters underpins our understanding of gold dispersion and (bio)geochemical cycling. Yet, to date, there are no direct techniques capable of identifying the oxidation state and complexation of gold in natural waters. We present a reversed phase ion-pairing HPLC-ICP-MS method for the separation and determination of aqueous gold(III)-chloro-hydroxyl, gold(III)-bromo-hydroxyl, gold(I)-thiosulfate, and gold(I)-cyanide complexes. Detection limits for the gold species range from 0.05 to 0.30 μg L(-1). The [Au(CN)2](-) gold cyanide complex was detected in five of six waters from tailings and adjacent monitoring bores of working gold mines. Contrary to thermodynamic predictions, evidence was obtained for the existence of Au(III)-complexes in circumneutral, hypersaline waters of a natural lake overlying a gold deposit in Western Australia. This first direct evidence for the existence and stability of Au(III)-complexes in natural surface waters suggests that Au(III)-complexes may be important for the transport and biogeochemical cycling of gold in surface environments. Overall, these results show that near-μg L(-1) enrichments of Au in environmental waters result from metastable ligands (e.g., CN(-)) as well as kinetically controlled redox processes leading to the stability of highly soluble Au(III)-complexes.

Generation of luminescent noble metal nanodots in cell matrices

Cell matrices were used as rich libraries to screen proteins for the production of luminescent silver and gold nanodots. The study indicates that the proteins for silver and gold nanodot protection are quite different. The identification of such proteins in future may enrich the family of luminescent nanodots.

Gold(III) Dithiocarbamate Derivatives for the Treatment of Cancer: Solution Chemistry, DNA Binding, and Hemolytic Properties

Gold(III) compounds are emerging as a new class of metal complexes with outstanding cytotoxic properties and are presently being evaluated as potential antitumor agents. We report here on the solution and electrochemical properties, and the biological behavior of some gold(III) dithiocarbamate derivatives which have been recently proved to be one to 4 orders of magnitude more cytotoxic in vitro than the reference drug (cisplatin) and to be able to overcome to a large extent both intrinsic and acquired resistance to cisplatin itself. Their solution properties have been monitored in order to study their stability under physiological conditions; remarkably, they have shown to undergo complete hydrolysis within 1 h, the metal center remaining in the +3 oxidation state. Their DNA binding properties and ability in hemolyzing red blood cells have been also evaluated. These gold(III) complexes show high reactivity toward some biologically important isolated macromolecules, resulting in a dramatic inhibition of both DNA and RNA synthesis and inducing DNA lesions with a faster kinetics than cisplatin. Nevertheless, they also induce a strong and fast hemolytic effect (compared to cisplatin), suggesting that intracellular DNA might not represent their primary or exclusive biological target.

Ligand scrambling reactions of cyano(thione)gold(I) complexes and determination of their equilibrium constants

Ligand scrambling reactions in cyano(thione)gold(I) complexes ([>C=S-Au-CN]) to form [Au(>C=S)2]+ and [Au(CN)2]– species have been investigated for a series of thiones in DMSO using 13C and 15N NMR spectroscopy. Rapid approach to equilibrium occurred and resulted in distinct signals for the [>C=S-Au-CN] and [Au(CN)2]– complexes, both in 13C and 15N NMR. Equilibrium constants (Keq) were determined for scrambling of all the complexes by integrating the CN resonances in the 13C NMR recorded at 298 K. The influence of various factors (initial concentration, ionic strength, temperature, and solvent polarity) on the Keq value was examined for a representative complex (ImtAuCN (Imt = Imidazolidine-2-thione)).Key words: cyanogold(I) complexes, thiones, ligand scrambling, NMR, Keq.
