Abstract
The profiles of total fatty acids (TFAs) and the neutral lipid fatty acids (NLFAs) were compared for the bacterium Rhodopirellula rubra and the alga Raphidocelis subcapitata (conventional food source for Daphnia magna). D. magna NLFAs were assessed when this crustacean was fed with bacterium and alga, individually or in combination. After NLFA extraction, the profiles of the various organisms were characterized by gas chromatography. Results evidenced the relevance of the different composition of the fatty acid (FAs) fractions in the different organisms, R. rubra and R. subcapitata. In these species, the NFLA analyses revealed high amounts of long chain FAs (C19). The FA profile of D. magna was influenced by the different diets provided although the preferred diet was the alga. D. magna showed the capacity to adapt to the available food resources as it defines its FA profile according to its needs, namely for the long chain FAs (C19).

Abstract
Incubation of DHA with sheep rumen fluid resulted in 80% disappearance in 6 h. The products were analyzed as their fatty acid (FA) methyl esters by GC-FID on SP-2560 and SLB-IL111 columns. The GC-online reduction × GC and GC-MS techniques demonstrated that all DHA metabolites retained the C22 structure (no evidence of chain-shortening). Two new transient DHA products were identified: mono-trans methylene interrupted-DHA and monoconjugated DHA (MC-DHA) isomers. Identification of MC-DHA was confirmed by their predicted elution using equivalent chain length differences from C18 FA, their molecular ions, and the 22:5 products formed which were the most abundant at 6 h. The 22:5 structures were established by fragmentation of their 4,4-dimethyloxazoline derivatives, and all 22:5 products contained an isolated double bond, suggesting formation via MC-DHA. The most abundant c4,c7,c10,t14,c19-22:5 appeared to be formed by unknown isomerases. Results suggest that the initial biohydrogenation of DHA was analogous to that of C18 FA.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ambient temperature on the physical and chemical characteristics of the longissimus dorsi muscle by comparing the quality of meat from pigs reared in a controlled and in an uncontrolled environment, the latter provided with a shallow pool. Twenty castrated male pigs of the Topigs line were randomly allotted to two treatments: a controlled environment, with constant temperature (22 °C) and relative humidity (70%); and an uncontrolled environment in a conventional shed for rearing pigs equipped with a shallow pool, where pigs were subject to climatic variations. Meat from pigs kept in the controlled environment showed a greater capacity to retain intracellular water, higher tenderness, and lower cholesterol levels than meat from pigs reared in the uncontrolled environment, but displayed higher lipid oxidation and a lower concentration of DHA. Treatments had no effect on color, pH, chemical composition, or fatty acid profile (except DHA concentration). Rearing pigs in sheds equipped with a shallow pool minimizes the effects of environmental heat on meat quality, allowing the production of high-quality meat in warm climate regions without expensive investments. Animals reared in an uncontrolled environment equipped with a shallow pool are able to produce meat with characteristics within the quality standards and with similar quality to that of meat from animals raised in controlled environment.

Abstract
Milkfat is a complex mixture of many diverse FA, some of which have demonstrated health benefits including anticancer properties. Attempts are under way to enrich milkfats with long-chain n-3 PUFA and CLA. It has been recommended that the analysis of these milkfats requires gas chromatography (GC) equipped with long, highly polar capillary columns. However, many analyses have been reported using CARBOWAX type (polyethylene glycol) capillary columns, such as SUPELCOWAX 10, even though the separation characteristics of many of the FA and their isomers present in milkfats have not been described in detail. This includes the isomers of CLA, cis- and trans-octadecenoic acid (18:1), linoleic acid (18:2n-6), and linolenic acid (18:3n-3), and the long-chain PUFA. On the other hand, the resolution of these FA and their isomers has been more fully described using the highly polar capillary columns, such as CP Sil 88 and SP2560 because of the improved resolution obtained using these polar columns. The present study was undertaken to characterize the separation of these FA present in milkfats using a 60-m SUPELCOWAX 10 column, to compare the results to those from a 100-m CP Sil 88 column, and to determine if these two columns could possibly serve to complement each other for the analysis of total milkfat. The advantages of the SUPELCOWAX 10 column were a better resolution of the short-chain saturated from their monounsaturated FA (MUFA) analogs, and a complete separation of the alpha-linolenic (18:3n-3) and eicosadecenoic acid (20:1) isomers. It also provided an alternative elution order of the linoleic (18:2n-6), 18:3n-3 and gamma-linolenic (18:3n-6) acid isomers. On the other hand, the CP Sil 88 column provided a better resolution of the CLA isomers, MUFA, the isolated cis and trans MUFA fractions, the PUFA, and many the 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 isomers. A complete analysis of milk lipids using the CP Sil 88 column required the prior separation of total FAME using silver ion-TLC. The results of the present study confirm that the 100-m highly polar capillary GC columns are mandatory for the analysis of milk lipids, and at best, the 60 m SUPELCOWAX 10 capillary column serves as a complementary GC column to provide different separations in certain regions based on its intermediate polarity.

Abstract
In five separate experiments, eggs from a single female goldfish were fertilized at 20°C. They were incubated at 22°C for 6 hours, after which some of the eggs were transferred to 13°C. When a defined post-hatch developmental stage was reached, lipid extracts were prepared from larvae, both with yolk sacs intact and after removal of the yolk sac by dissection. Other larvae were sampled at yolk exhaustion. Gas chromatographic analysis of fatty acid profiles revealed that larvae incorporated 16:0, 18:0, 20:4 (n-6) and 22:6 (n-3) into their tissues in proportions higher than those present in the eggs from which they were derived. At 22°C, these trends were particularly apparent at yolk exhaustion. At 13°C, proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the bodies of newly hatched larvae were higher than those in the 22°C larval bodies. Monounsaturated fatty acids were preferentially depleted during development, especially in larvae from high quality eggs. No dependence of egg quality, as assessed by larval viability at 22°C, on total egg lipid mass or fatty acid composition was found. Larvae from the lowest quality eggs showed a reduced preference for incorporation of (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids into their tissues.
