Studies on the retention behaviour of metal-EDTA complexes in cation chromatography

Production of pharmaceutical grade [201Tl]Thallous chloride using 30 MeV cyclotron

Multiple patient doses of [201Tl]TlCl has been produced using electrodeposited enriched 203Tl in 30 MeV cyclotron (Cyclone-30) with 28 MeV proton energy at 50 μA beam current for 8 h. Ion Exchange Column Chromatography (IECC) and liquid-liquid extraction has been employed for semi-automated radiochemical separation and purification of produced [201Tl]TlCl. The produced [201Tl]TlCl was used in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients.

Suppressed anion chromatography using mixed zwitter-ionic and carbonate eluents

Effect of mixed eluents which contain zwitterions such as 2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid (MES), 3-(N-morpholino)propanesulfonic acid (MOPS), 2-(cyclohexylamino)ethanesulfonic acid (CHES) and 3-(cyclohexylamino)-1-propanesulfonic acid (CAPS) and carbonate for suppressed conductivity ion chromatography (IC) were studied. The retention behaviors of all species were affected with different anion exchange columns when adding some zwitterion into carbonate eluent. The retention time of all species, especially those of strong retetion, was substantially shortened in AS14A column with either Na(2)CO(3)/CHES or Na(2)CO(3)/CAPS as eluent while a general increase in retetion time was noticed in AS9-HC column. Low pH of eluent was achieved when zwitterion was added. Without much changes in the background conductivity after suppressed, CHES could be used as suppressed conductivity ion chromatography eluent for determination of species unstable in strong alkaline, such as determination of phosphate in heteropoly acid (HPA) samples in AS14 column. The mixed eluent could also affect the selectivity when it was applied to the study of simultaneous separation of anions and cations in AS9-HC column by suppressed ion chromatography.

Degradation of Pb--EDTA complex by a H(2)O(2)/UV process

The degradation of PbEDTA in aqueous solution by a H(2)O(2)/UV process was studied. The effect of H(2)O(2) content, pH of the solution and the presence of nitrate were investigated. PbEDTA degradation by a H(2)O(2)/UV process was shown to be accompanied by simultaneous lead precipitation. PbEDTA was decomposed rapidly in acidic solutions while lead precipitation was achieved only when the pH of the solution was higher than 6. The presence of nitrate in significant amounts (0.04 M) inhibited remarkably the degradation of the complex and metal precipitation. The degradation of CdEDTA and ZnEDTA was also studied. It was found that the decomposition of metal-EDTA complex and metal removal by the H(2)O(2)/UV process depend greatly on the nature of the metal. CdEDTA and ZnEDTA were decomposed rapidly but metal precipitation was not achieved. The major by-products of the degradation of metal-EDTA complexes observed were nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), iminodiacetic acid (IDA), oxalic acid and nitrate.

Capillary electrophoresis method for the analysis of inorganic anions, organic acids, amino acids, nucleotides, carbohydrates and other anionic compounds

A previously developed capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method with indirect UV detection for the simultaneous determination of inorganic and organic anions, amino acids and carbohydrates using 20 mM 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC) as the background electrolyte was extended to allow determination of 206 anions including those above--mentioned and physiological amino acids, nucleotides, aromatic acids, haloacetic acids, alcohols, phosphorylated saccharides, oxyhalides, metal oxoacids, metal-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) complexes, forensic anions, Good's buffers and herbicides. Every compound could be analyzed and their electrophoretic mobility determined simply by selecting detection wavelength. This method is simple and universal for anion analysis, and could be readily applied to the simultaneous determination of anionic compounds. In this work, it was used to identify and quantify important anions in sea urchin and sake.

Carboxylic acids: prediction of retention data from chromatographic and electrophoretic behaviours

A review of the main results reached in the prediction of retention data of carboxylic acids, inferred by their chromatographic and electrophoretic behaviour, is presented. Attention has been focused on the main separation methods used in carboxylic acids analysis, that is ion-exclusion, anion-exchange, reversed-phase (RP) liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. Papers proposing mechanistic models as well as chemometric and multilayer feed-forward neural network analysis of ion chromatography (IC) and RP chromatographic retention data were reviewed. Principal component analysis, PCA, sequential simplex method and simultaneous modelling of response surfaces through simple nonlinear models (not related to equilibria involved in retention) have been considered. Computer simulations for the prediction of retention data have also been discussed. A quick overlook on the prediction of capacity factors of analytes by less common determination methods such as thin-layer, gas chromatography and supercritical fluid chromatography has also been done.
