Abstract
We measure the entropy of formation of the interface upon anion adsorption (Cl-, Br- I- and SO42-) on Au(111) as an important indicator for the structure, order and composition of the interface. The entropy of formation of the interface exhibits a rather universal behaviour for all anions with a steep decrease upon initial adsorption followed by a shallow minimum at intermediate anion coverages and a strong increase close to the completion of the adsorbate adlayer. The strong variation of the entropy signals significant entropic contributions to the free enthalpy of the adsorption process and thus the stability of the adsorbed phase. At low anion coverages, close to the potential of zero charge, we attribute the entropy variations to the rearrangement of the interfacial water structure. At intermediate and high anion coverages, a comparison with the results of a lattice-gas model, considering pairwise repulsive interactions within the quasi-chemical approximation, shows that the entropy changes upon anion adsorption can be explained by the configurational entropy of the adsorbed phase. Thus, entropic contributions from both the solvent and the adsorbate are important for the stability of surface phases, particularly for disordered systems.

Abstract
We investigate compositional changes of an electrochemical interface upon polarization with electrochemical microcalorimetry. From the heat exchanged at a Au(111) electrode upon sulfate adsorption, we determine the reaction entropy of the adsorption process for both neutral and acidic solutions, where the dominant species in solution changes from SO42− to HSO4−. In neutral solution, the reaction entropy is about 40 J mol−1 K−1 more positive than that in acidic solution over the complete sulfate adsorption region. This entropy offset is explicable by a deprotonation step of HSO4− preceding sulfate adsorption in acidic solution, which shows that the adsorbing species is SO4* in both solutions. The observed overall variation of the reaction entropy in the sulfate adsorption region of ca. 80 J mol−1 K−1 indicates significant sulfate‐coverage dependent entropic contributions to the Free Enthalpy of the surface system.

Abstract
The surface modification of electrodes attracts great interest in electrocatalysis. It has often been observed that deposition of foreign adatoms on the surface of an electrode can originate a significant enhancement in the catalytic activity. For example, it has been reported that nickel deposits on Pt surfaces improve the rate of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, Nature Energy 2017, 2, 17031). During the deposition process of such metal adlayers, the pH and the nature of the ions in the electrolyte play an important role. Phosphate species are typically used to prepare buffer solutions in a wide range of pH. Therefore, electrolytes containing phosphate species are used in a large number of applications. However, the effect of phosphate on platinum surface modification with nickel deposits has not been studied yet. In this work, new data about the interaction of phosphate with nickel adatoms deposited on Pt(111) at pH 5 is investigated using cyclic voltammetry and infrared spectroscopy. The results show that, when nickel is in solution, the phosphate ions are adsorbed at lower potentials than in the absence of nickel. In addition, Laser-Induced Temperature Jump Technique demonstrates that nickel facilitates the adsorption of phosphate because of a shift of the potential of zero charge (pzc) toward negative potentials. This increases the magnitude of the positive electric field on the electrode surface, at a given potential E>pzc, facilitating the adsorption of anions. CO displacement technique has been also employed to obtain additional information about co-adsorbed phosphate on nickel adlayers. Finally, the HER has been studied at pH 5 in the presence of nickel, with and without phosphate in the bulk solution.

Abstract
Despite the significance of phosphate buffer solutions in (bio)electrochemistry, detailed adsorption properties of phosphate anions at metal surfaces remain poorly understood. Herein, phosphate adsorption at quasi-Au(111) surfaces prepared by a chemical deposition technique has been systematically investigated over a wide range of pH by surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy in the ATR configuration (ATR-SEIRAS). Two different pH-dependent states of adsorbed phosphate are spectroscopically detected. Together with DFT calculations, the present study reveals that pKa for adsorbed phosphate species at the interface is much lower than that for phosphate species in the bulk solution; the dominant phosphate anion, H2PO4(-) at 2 < pH < 7 or HPO4(2-) at 7 < pH < 12, undergoes deprotonation upon adsorption and transforms into the adsorbed HPO4 or PO4, respectively. This study leads to a conclusion different than earlier spectroscopic studies have reached, highlighting the capability of the ATR-SEIRAS technique at electrified metal-solution interfaces.

Abstract
The electrocapillary coupling coefficient, ς, measures the response of the electrode potential, E, to tangential elastic strain at the surface of an electrode. Using dynamic electro-chemo-mechanical analysis, we study ς(E) simultaneously with cyclic voltammetry. The study covers extended potential intervals on Au, Pt, and Pd, including the electrosorption of oxygen species and of hydrogen. The magnitude and sign of ς vary during the scans, and quite generally the graphs of ς(E) emphasize details which are less obvious or missing in the cyclic voltammograms (CVs). Capacitive processes on the clean electrode surfaces exhibit ς < 0, whereas capacitive processes on oxygen-covered surfaces are characterized by ς < 0 on Au but ς > 0 on Pt and Pd. The findings of ς < 0 during the initial stages of oxygen species adsorption and ς > 0 for hydrogen electrosorption agree with the trend that tensile strain makes surfaces more binding for adsorbates. However, the large hysteresis of oxygen electrosorption on all electrodes raises the question: is the exchange current associated with that process sufficient for its measurement by potential response during small cyclic strain?

Abstract
We describe the history of electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and advances made in this field during the past 20 years. In situ STM allows one to monitor various electrode processes, such as the underpotential deposition of copper and silver ions; the specific adsorption of iodine and sulfate/bisulfate ions; electrochemical dissolution processes of silicon and gold single-crystal surfaces in electrolyte solutions; and the molecular assembly of metalloporphyrins, metallophthalocyanines, and fullerenes, at atomic and/or molecular resolution. Furthermore, a laser confocal microscope, combined with a differential interference contrast microscope, enables investigation of the dynamics of electrochemical processes at atomic resolution.

Abstract
Self-assembled organization of functional molecules on solid surfaces has developed into a powerful and sophisticated tool for surface chemistry and nanotechnology. A number of reviews on the topic have been available since the mid 1990s. This perspective article aims to focus on recent development in the investigations of electronic structures and assembling dynamics of electrochemically controlled self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of thiol containing molecules on gold surfaces. A brief introduction is first given and particularly illustrated by a Table summarizing the molecules studied, the surface lattice structures and the experimental operating conditions. This is followed by discussion of two major high-resolution experimental methods, scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and single-crystal electrochemistry. In Section 3, we briefly address choice of supporting electrolytes and substrate surfaces, and their effects on the SAM structures. Section 4 constitutes the major body of the article by offering some details of recent studies for the selected cases, including in situ monitoring of assembling dynamics, molecular electronic structures, and the key external factors determining the SAM packing. In Section 5, we give examples of what can be offered by theoretical computations for the detailed understanding of the SAM electronic structures revealed by STM images. A brief summary of the current applications of SAMs in wiring metalloproteins, design and fabrication of sensors, and single-molecule electronics is described in Section 6. In the final two sections (7 and 8), we discuss the current status in understanding of electronic structures and properties of SAMs in electrochemical environments and what could be expected for future perspectives.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA)-active Au/Ti bilayer films sputter deposited on Si substrates have been prepared by an electrochemical annealing (ECA) treatment for the first time. The application of Au/Ti bilayer films on Si substrates to the spectroscopic technique is a promising alternative to the conventional technique using directly deposited Au films on Si substrates, offering excellent adhesive durability of the deposited metal films. However, Au/Ti bilayer films have never been selected for the spectroscopy technique because the films in the as-prepared state exhibit relatively smooth surface morphology: the excitation of the localized surface plasmon is vital to achieving SEIRA enhancements but could hardly be observed on the smooth morphology. It is shown by ex situ scanning tunneling microscopy measurements that the unfavorable smooth morphology of the as-prepared Au/Ti bilayer films can be modified by the ECA treatment to a reasonably rough, island-structure morphology similar to that of the conventional SEIRA-active Au films. In situ infrared absorption spectroscopy of adsorbed sulfate anions has been conducted on the Au/Ti bilayer film both before and after ECA treatment. The spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the SEIRA activity of the film after being subjected to the treatment is significantly improved so that the technique could detect adsorbates on the film electrodes even with the submonolayer coverage. As an additional benefit, the ECA treatment has brought about a substantial increase in the fraction of Au(111) domains on the polycrystalline Au film surfaces. Accordingly, this approach enables us to prepare SEIRA-active Au films having sufficient adhesion to the Si substrates as well as the highly preferred (111) orientation.

Abstract
The nature of the adsorbed species for Pt(111) in sulfuric acid solutions has been elucidated by a careful thermodynamic analysis of the effect of pH on charge density data. This analysis takes advantage of the fact that, for solutions of constant total sulfate + bisulfate concentration, an increase of pH would increase the sulfate concentration, at the expense of decreasing the bisulfate concentration. As a result, sulfate adsorption would be shifted toward lower potentials, while bisulfate adsorption would follow the opposite trend. In the present work, coulostatic data for Pt(111) in (0.2 - x) M Me(2)SO(4) + x M H(2)SO(4) (Me: Li, Na; x: 10(-4) - 0.2) and (0.1 - x) M KClO(4) + x M HClO(4) + 10(-3) M K(2)SO(4) (x: 10(-4) - 0.1) solutions are carefully analyzed. It is concluded that sulfate rather than bisulfate adsorption takes place at potentials higher than the potential of zero charge. This result agrees with the fact that similar FTIRRAS bands for adsorbed sulfate species are observed for pH 0.8-3.5 in (0.2 - x) M K(2)SO(4) + x M H(2)SO(4) solutions.

Abstract
Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies were performed on the adsorption of sulfate on Au(111). Focusing on the well-known (√3 × √7)R19.1° structure reported by various surface sensitive techniques, the coadsorption of H3O+ and/or H2O has been considered in different combinations. The calculated binding energies show that the coadsorption of a single H3O+ per sulfate is the most stable configuration, which is in agreement with experimental observations. Further, we find that in the case of coadsorption of both H3O+ and H2O along with sulfate, one of the protons of hydronium moves to sulfate, finally leading to bisulfate with two coadsorbed water molecules. Besides the morphology and energetics of the different configurations, we also discuss the nature of the surface bonds by analyzing the charge density distribution.
