Abstract
Metathesis reactions between either SrI(2) or BaI(2) and 2 equiv of the potassium phosphanide [[(Me(3)Si)(2)CH]-(C(6)H(4)-2-OMe)P]K yield, after recrystallization, the complexes [[([Me(3)Si](2)CH)(C(6)H(4)-2-OMe)P](2)M(THF)(n)] [M = Sr, n = 2 (5); Ba, n = 3 (6)]. Similar metathesis reactions between MI(2) and 2 equiv of the more sterically demanding potassium phosphanide [[(Me(3)Si)(2)CH](C(6)H(3)-2-OMe-3-Me)P]K yield the chemically isostructural complexes [[([Me(3)Si](2)CH)(C(6)H(3)-2-OMe-3-Me)P](2)M(THF)(2)] [M = Ca (9), Sr (7), Ba (8)]. Compounds 5-9 have been characterized by multi-element NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Complex 9 is thermally unstable and decomposes at room temperature to give the tertiary phosphane [(Me(3)Si)(2)CH](C(6)H(3)-2-OMe-3-Me)P(Me) and an unidentified Ca-containing product. Compounds 5 and 6 also decompose at elevated temperatures to give the corresponding tertiary phosphane [(Me(3)Si)(2)CH](C(6)H(4)-2-OMe)P(Me) and intractable metal-containing products. The decomposition of 5, 6, and 9 suggests that these compounds undergo an intramolecular methyl migration from the O atom in one phosphanide ligand to the P atom of an adjacent phosphanide ligand to give species containing dianionic alkoxo-phosphanide ligands.

Abstract
The secondary phosphine R(Me(2)NCH(2)-2-C(6)H(4))PH reacts with Bu(2)Mg to give the homoleptic complex Mg[PR(C(6)H(4)-2-CH(2)NMe(2))](2) (1) [R = CH(SiMe(3))(2)]. The analogous heavier alkaline earth metal complexes (THF)(n)Ae[PR(C(6)H(4)-2-CH(2)NMe(2))](2) [Ae = Ca (2), n = 0; Ae = Sr (3), Ba (4), n = 1] have been synthesized by metathesis reactions between K[PR(C(6)H(4)-2-CH(2)NMe(2))] and 0.5 equiv of the respective alkaline earth metal diiodide. Compounds 1-4 have been characterized by X-ray crystallography and multielement NMR spectroscopy. In the solid state, compounds 1-4 are monomeric, complexes 1 and 2 adopting a distorted tetrahedral geometry and complexes 3 and 4 adopting a distorted square pyramidal geometry (1: orthorhombic, P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 11.413(3) A, b = 12.072(3) A, c = 32.620(11) A, Z = 4. 2: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 9.5550(4) A, b = 17.4560(7) A, c = 24.5782(10) A, beta = 91.673(2) degrees, Z = 4. 3: monoclinic, C2/c, a = 15.0498(9) A, b = 13.0180(8) A, c = 24.3664(14) A, beta = 104.593(2) degrees, Z = 4. 4: monoclinic, C2/c, a = 15.2930(10) A, b = 13.0326(9) A, c = 24.6491(17) A, beta = 105.542(2) degrees, Z = 4). In toluene solution, compounds 2-4 are subject to dynamic processes which are attributed to a monomer-dimer equilibrium for which bridge-terminal exchange of the phosphanide ligands in the dimer may be frozen out at low temperatures.

Abstract
The synthesis and structural characterization of two magnesium thiolate complexes are described. Both compounds were prepared by analogous reactions routes, namely, alkane elimination and transamination, but using differently sized ligands. Utilization of the smaller HSCPh(3), resulted in the formation of [Mg(15-crown-5)(SCPh(3))(2)], 1, displaying a seven-coordinate magnesium center with two magnesium-sulfur bonds. Employment of the sterically more encumbered HS-2,4,6-tBu(3)C(6)H(2) yielded a separated cation and anions as displayed in [Mg(15-crown-5)(THF)(2)][S-2,4,6-tBu(3)C(6)H(2)](2), 2. Compound 2 exhibits a seven-coordinate cation, completing its coordination environment with five metal-crown-ether interactions in addition to two tetrahydrofuran (THF) contacts. The compounds were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy in addition to X-ray crystallography. Crystal data with Mo Kalpha (lambda = 0.710 73 Å) are as follows: 1, C(48)H(50)MgO(5)S(2), a = 8.4785(4) Å, b = 9.3595(5) Å, c = 13.8306(6) Å, alpha = 87.332(1) degrees, beta = 85.929(1) degrees, gamma = 68.733(1) degrees, Z = 1, triclinic; 2, C(54)H(94)MgO(7)S(2), a = 13.6755(2) Å, b = 12.8045(6) Å, c = 32.7127(12) Å, beta = 97.87(1) degrees, Z = 4, monoclinic.

Abstract
(1,2-Dimethoxyethane-O,O')lithium phosphanide (dme)LiPH(2) reacts with 1,2-bis(chloro-dimethylsilyl)ethane to give 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-2,5-disilaphospholane, 1, as well as 1,1,4,4-tetramethyl-1,4-bis(2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-2,5-disilaphospholanyl)-1,4-disilabutane, 2 (P(2)Si(6)C(18)H(48), space group P&onemacr;, a = 943.3(2) pm, b = 1278.3(3) pm, c = 1413.3(2) pm, alpha = 72.45(1) degrees, beta = 78.13(1) degrees, gamma = 70.83(1) degrees, d = 1.081 g cm(-)(3), Z = 2, wR2 = 0.1553 at 6548 F(2) values). The reaction of 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-2,5-disilaphospholane 1 and barium bis[bis(trimethylsilyl)amide] in 1,2-dimethoxyethane yields nearly quantitatively tris(1,2-dimethoxyethane-O,O')barium bis(2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-2,5-disilaphospholanide), 3A, which crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c (BaP(2)Si(4)O(6)C(24)H(62), a = 2152.3(1) pm, b = 1381.5(1) pm, c = 1459.7(1) pm, beta = 113.73(1) degrees, d(calc) = 1.268 g cm(-)(3), Z = 4, wR2 = 0.0989 at 5220 F(2) values). Due to the high coordination number of eight of the barium center, rather long Ba-P distances of 333 pm are observed. With loss of the complexating ether solvent this compound forms a dimer 3B of the type R(dme)Ba(&mgr;-R)(3)Ba(dme)(2) in toluene or benzene solution as can be proven by (31)P{(1)H}-NMR spectroscopy ((2)J(P-P) = 6.7 Hz) and by X-ray structure analysis (Ba(2)P(4)Si(8)O(6)C(48)H(106), space group P2(1)/n, a = 1256.3(2) pm, b = 2000.0(3) pm, c = 2986.9(2) pm, beta = 98.929(9) degrees, d(calc) = 1.257 g cm(-)(3), Z = 4, wR2 = 0.1334 at 11580 F(2) values). The Ba-P bond lengths vary between 318 and 338 pm.
