The effect of metal retentive designs on resin veneer retention

Influence of attaching mechanical retentive devices onto frameworks on fracture resistance of implant-supported zirconia crowns

This study investigated the fracture load of implant-supported zirconia crowns (IZCs), in which indirect composite resin or feldspathic porcelain was layered onto zirconia frameworks with mechanical retentive devices. Three different zirconia frameworks were assessed: attaching mechanical retentive devices on glaze and opaque porcelain materials (GL and OP groups, respectively), and no attaching mechanical retentive devices (ND group). The frameworks were layered using feldspathic porcelain (FP veneer) and indirect composite resin (IC veneer). Fracture load of the specimens was measured. In FP veneer, the GL group recorded the highest fracture load. In the IC veneer, the GL and OP groups had significantly higher fracture load than the ND group. The fracture resistance of IZCs can be enhanced by applying glaze material before attaching mechanical retentive devices for porcelain layering. The mechanical retentive devices effectively yielded mechanical interlocking between the zirconia frameworks and the IC veneer in GL and OP groups.

Bond strength between a veneering composite resin and zirconia frameworks with attached mechanical retentive devices

The effects of mechanical retentive devices and various surface treatments on the shear bond strength between a veneering composite resin and zirconia was investigated. Zirconia disks were classified into three surface-treatment groups: airborne-particle abrasion, overglazing, and overglazing with white alumina particles of three different grain sizes (50, 70, and 105 μm) attached onto zirconia disks (ZR-50, ZR-70, and ZR-105, respectively). They were further divided into four groups (n=44): unprimed, Clearfil Porcelain Bond Activator (CA), Clearfil Photo Bond (CB), and CA+CB. An indirect composite resin was bonded to zirconia specimens. Shear bond strengths were measured. For the ZR-70 and ZR-105 groups, the CB and CA+CB specimens exhibited higher bond strengths than the other two specimens after thermocycling. The ZR-70 and ZR-105 groups achieved micromechanical interlocking, and priming with a phosphate monomer (MDP) yielded stable bond strengths between the composite resin and zirconia with alumina particles attached as retentive devices.

Effects of dimensions of laser-milled grid-like microslits on shear bond strength between porcelain or indirect composite resin and zirconia

PURPOSE

Zirconia cores and frameworks are widely used in restorative dentistry. Although these structures are veneered with porcelain for esthetic reasons, the use of indirect composite resins (ICRs) is expected to increase in the future. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of microslits of different dimensions formed by Nd:YVO 4 laser machining on the bond strength between two types of zirconia (3 mol% yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) and ceria-partially stabilized zirconia/alumina nanocomposite (Ce-TZP/A)) and porcelain or an ICR.

METHODS

The zirconia disks were assigned as follows: 1) blasted with alumina particles (AB) and 2-4) surface machined with gridded microslits with a width, pitch, and depth of 50, 75, or 100 µm (MS50, MS75, and MS100, respectively). After the bonding of the veneering materials to the disks, half of the specimens veneered with the ICR were subjected to thermocycling (4-60°C, 20000 cycles). All the specimens were subsequently shear tested (n = 10/group).

RESULTS

There was no significant difference between the groups of the disks bonded to porcelain. On the other hand, for the disks bonded to the ICR, the bond strengths of the MS groups after thermocycling were statistically higher than that of the AB group. However, there was no significant difference in the bond strengths of the disks with different microslits.

CONCLUSIONS

Within the study limitations, it can be concluded that, for porcelain, the design of the mechanical retentive structure must be modified. However, for the investigated ICR, a simple gridded pattern can improve the bond strength with zirconia.

Comparative study of the shear bond strength of various veneering materials on grade II commercially pure titanium

PURPOSE

To compare the shear bond strength of various veneering materials to grade II commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty specimens of CP-Ti disc with 9 mm diameter and 10 mm height were divided into three experimental groups. Each group was bonded to heat-polymerized acrylic resin (Lucitone 199), porcelain (Triceram), and indirect composite (Sinfony) with 7 mm diameter and 2 mm height. For the control group (n=10), Lucitone 199 were applied on type IV gold alloy castings. All samples were thermocycled for 5000 cycles in 5-55℃ water. The maximum shear bond strength (MPa) was measured with a Universal Testing Machine. After the shear bond strength test, the failure mode was assessed with an optic microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Statistical analysis was carried out with a Kruskal-Wallis Test and Mann-Whitney Test.

RESULTS

The mean shear bond strength and standard deviations for experimental groups were as follows: Ti-Lucitone 199 (12.11 ± 4.44 MPa); Ti-Triceram (11.09 ± 1.66 MPa); Ti-Sinfony (4.32 ± 0.64 MPa). All of these experimental groups showed lower shear bond strength than the control group (16.14 ± 1.89 MPa). However, there was no statistically significant difference between the Ti-Lucitone 199 group and the control group, and the Ti-Lucitone 199 group and the Ti-Triceram group. Most of the failure patterns in all experimental groups were adhesive failures.

CONCLUSION

The shear bond strength of veneering materials such as heat-polymerized acrylic resin, porcelain, and indirect composite to CP-Ti was compatible to that of heatpolymerized acrylic resin to cast gold alloy.

Shear bond strength between autopolymerizing acrylic resin and Co-Cr alloy using different primers

This study aimed to examine the shear bond strength between cobalt chromium alloy and autopolymerizing acrylic resin using experimental primers containing 5, 10, and 15 wt% of 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitic anhydride or 1, 2, and 3 wt% of 3-methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane comparison to 5 commercial primers (ML primers, Alloy primer, Metal/Zirconia primer, Monobond S, and Monobond plus). Sixty alloy specimens were sandblasted and treated with each primer before bonded with an acrylic resin. The control group was not primed. The shear bond strengths were tested and statistically compared. Specimens treated with commercial primers significantly increased the shear bond strength of acrylic resin to cobalt chromium alloy (p<0.05). The highest shear bond strength was found in the Alloy primer group. Among experimental group, using 10 wt% of 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitic anhydride -or 2 wt% of 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane enhanced highest shear bond strength. The experimental and commercial primers in this study all improved bonding of acrylic resin to cobalt chromium alloy.

Shear bond strength of three veneering resins to a Ni-Cr alloy using two bonding procedures

Composite veneering materials are used as alternatives to porcelain in fixed prosthodontics. Mechanical retention of the resin on the metal framework has been associated with the formation of gaps at the resin/alloy interface, and failure of the restoration. Several chemical bonding systems have been introduced to promote resin adhesion. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of three photocured composites (Artglass, Solidex & Signum+) to a Ni-Cr alloy.72 wax disks covered with 150-mum diameter beads were cast and divided in two equal groups. In the first group, Metal Photo Primer was applied on the casting surface, while the Siloc system was used in the second. Each group was divided in three subgroups of 12 samples, in which the three composites were photocured. Half of the specimens of each subgroup were subjected to 1000 and 5000 thermal cycles (5 and 55 degrees C) respectively. All specimens were tested in shear in a universal testing machine. The Siloc-Solidex group showed the highest bond strength (17.3 +/- 3.7 MPa). No statistically significant difference was found between specimens treated with Metal Photo Primer or Siloc. Thermocycling did not significantly affect the bond strength values. Solidex showed an adhesive failure mode for both alloy surface treatments, while Artglass and Signum+ exhibited combination failures. Conclusively, the appropriate alloy surface treatment - resin combination can significantly improve the resin-alloy shear bond strength. Specifically, Solidex resin exhibited significantly higher bond values compared with Artglass and Signum+, for both surface treatments and thermocycling procedures.

Comparison of retentive systems for composites used as alternatives to porcelain in fixed partial dentures

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The bond strength between framework metals and composites, used as alternatives to porcelain, requires further study because adhesive failures can promote microleakage, discoloration, and stains in composites.

PURPOSE

The aim of this in vitro study was to analyze and compare the tensile strength between the base metal Ni-Cr alloys: (Wirocer and Wiron 99) and 2 composites (Artglass and Solidex) with 2 types of mechanical retention (0.4-mm and 0.6-mm beads); 2 types of chemical treatment (Siloc system and Metal Photo Primer system) and the combination of both treatments on a metal framework; to verify whether these composite systems were strong enough to be used as alternatives to porcelain.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 144 specimens, cylindrical metal rods (3 mm diameter x 60 mm length), were cast in Ni-Cr alloy (Wiron 99 or Wirocer), divided into 6 equal groups corresponding to 6 types of retention: airborne particle abrasion/control (A), chemical (C), mechanical with 0.4-mm (M4) and 0.6-mm beads (M6), and chemical/mechanical with 0.4-mm (CM4) and 0.6-mm beads (CM6). Composite rings formed around the rods (6.0 mm diameter X 2.0 mm thickness) of Artglass or Solidex were light polymerized in the UniXS unit (wavelength range of 320-520 nm for 540s) according to the manufacturer's specifications. Specimens were invested, and their tensile strength was measured at fracture with an EMIC-MEM 2000 universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 2.0 mm/min and 500 kgf load cell. Statistical analysis was carried out with analysis of variance and Tukey's test at significance level P=.01.

RESULTS

The highest mean retention values were recorded for groups CM6 (63.57 MPa) and M6 (63.05 MPa). The lowest mean retention values were recorded for groups A (30.63 MPa) and C (25.07 MPa). No significant difference was found regarding the alloys used in this study (P<.01). There was a significant difference in shear strength (P<.01) between Solidex (52.33 MPa) and Artglass (43.18 MPa).

CONCLUSION

Within the limitations of this study, mechanical retention with 0.6-mm beads and chemical/mechanical retention with 0.6-mm beads increased the metal-composite tensile bond strength. No significant difference was found between these 2 retention systems. Chemical and airborne particle abrasion/control retentions were statistically weaker than the other types of retention tested. The retention means corresponding to the commercial-grade Ni-Cr alloys used were statistically different. The composite Solidex showed a tensile strength mean statistically higher than Artglass. All values observed were higher than that recommended for metal-ceramic dental restorative systems (25 MPa-ISO 9693).

Adhesive composite resins for artificial teeth: a laboratory investigation of bond strength to a cobalt-chromium alloy

Adhesive resin systems are reported to improve the bond strength between resins and cast cobalt-chromium alloy. This investigation compares the behaviour of three resin systems. Cylinders and beams of cobalt-chromium, with 0.6-mm-diameter retention beads regularly cast onto the bonding surfaces, were air-abraded and ultrasonically cleaned. Resin veneers 4 mm deep on the cylinders and 2 mm on the bars were polymerized by heat and pressure or by light. Specimens were water-stored for 7 or 90 days, including thermocycling between 4, 37 and 60 degrees C, before testing in a Universal Testing Machine to examine the shear bond strength or the effect of the bonded resin spine on the flexural strength of the beams using a three-point bend test. Specimens were examined with an optical microscope to attempt to determine the nature of the failures that occurred. The investigation showed that, overall, the heat- and pressure-cured urethane dimethacrylate resin with and adhesive based upon methacrylic acid performed significantly less well than a conventional acrylic resin, or a hybrid composite resin with and adhesive monomer.

The effect of bead attachment systems on casting patterns and resultant tensile bond strength of composite resin veneer cast restorations

This study compared the difference in tensile bond strength between the composite resin veneer and the cast Ni-Cr disk when different bead adhesives were used to make the laboratory patterns. Visio-Gem, cyanoacrylate, and shellac were the adhesives tested. Fifty-six composite resin bonded Ni-Cr disks were prepared and tested to tensile failure with the Kemper-Kilian device. All tested samples showed a complex failure pattern. The results showed that the mean tensile bond strength of the cyanoacrylate group was significantly higher than the other two groups. No significant difference in the mean tensile bond strength was observed between the Visio-Gem and shellac groups. The higher tensile bond strength in the cyanoacrylate group is thought to be attributed to the low rheological property of the adhesive that allowed greater exposure of the bead for retention. Using different adhesives in the fabrication of composite resin veneered-castings may affect the bond strength in the composite resin-metal interface.

Microleakage at the resin-alloy interface of chemically retained composite resins for cast restorations

New retentive mechanisms between veneering resins and casting alloys are claimed to have a chemical bond that results in a high bond strength combined with low microleakage between the veneering resin and cast restoration. This study compared the microleakage of four chemical bonding mechanisms when three veneering resins were bonded to two dental casting alloys. Resin-veneered alloy disks were immersed in red India ink and kept at 37 degrees C for 72 hours. The disks were then bench dried for 24 hours. The resin veneer was sectioned into eight sectors in an engineering milling machine and these resin sectors were removed to display the microleakage pattern. It was concluded that (1) no microleakage was found in two combinations, and (2) the highest microleakage was with Sr-Isosit-N/Panavia EX/Firmilay combinations.

Microleakage and shear bond strength of resin and porcelain veneers bonded to cast alloys

Four resin veneering materials and four methods of retaining the veneer on metal castings were compared with metal ceramic restoration. Variations in microleakage were noted between the four resin materials retained by mechanical retention beads. When mechanical and chemical modes of a resin and porcelain veneer retention were compared, there was no microleakage with one mechanically and two chemically retained resin groups including one metal ceramic group. The resin materials tested understandably produced substantially lower shear bond strengths than the metal ceramic specimens. Higher shear bond strengths were recorded for the retentive beads than for the resins retained by three chemical bonding techniques. There was no direct correlation between microleakage and shear bond strength.

Alternative alloys for resin-bonded retainers

Traditionally, resin-bonded fixed partial dentures have been made with nickel-chrome-beryllium alloys and cemented with conventional resin luting cements. However, alternative alloys for resin-bonded retainers offer improved physical and biocompatible properties, and resin-metal bond strengths twice that of traditional methods can be achieved. The superior bonds obtained with etched base metals bonded with adhesive resins and silica-coated alloys bonded with silane-coupling agents make these the most desirable techniques available.
