Abstract
We reviewed gastric ulcer healing by dopamine considering several distinctive duodenal key points. Selye and Szabo describe the cysteamine-induced duodenal ulcer in rats as a duodenal stress ulcer in patients. Szabo's cysteamine duodenal ulcer as the dopamine duodenal healing and cysteamine as a dopamine antagonist signifies the dopamine agonists anti-ulcer effect and dopamine antagonists ulcerogenic effect. From these viewpoints, we focused on dopamine and gastric ulcer healing. We mentioned antecedent studies on the dopamine presence in the stomach and gastric juice. Then we reviewed, in the timeline, therapy significance arising from the anti-ulcer potency of the various dopamine agonists, which is highly prevailing over the quite persistent beneficial evidence arising from the various dopamine antagonists. Meanwhile, the beneficial effects of several peptides (i.e., amylin, cholecystokinin, leptin, and stable gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157, suggested as an acting mediator of the dopamine brain-gut axis) were included in the dopamine gastric ulcer story. We attempt to resolve dopamine agonists/antagonists issue with the dopamine significance in the stress (cysteamine as a prototype of the duodenal stress ulcer), and cytoprotection (cysteamine in small dose as a prototype of the cytoprotective agents; cysteamine duodenal ulcer in gastrectomized rats). Thereby, along with dopamine agonists' beneficial effects, in special circumstances, dopamine antagonists having their own ulcerogenic effect may act as "mild stress (or)" or "small irritant" counteracting subsequent strong alcohol or stress procedure-induced severe lesions in this particular tissue. Finally, in the conclusion, as a new improvement in further therapy, we emphasized the advantages of the dopamine agents' application in lower gastrointestinal tract therapy.

Abstract
In view of anxiolytic, antidepressant and memory strengthen properties of Allium cepa (AC; onion) bulb in various investigations; we aimed to evaluate the useful effects of onion on single immobilization stress -induced biochemical and behavioral changes. Mice in test group were treated with AC powder (200 mg/kg/day), dissolved in water, while the control group were received drinking water for 14 days. After 14 days control and AC treated mice were further divided into unstressed and stressed groups. Animals in the stressed group were subjected to immobilization stress for 2 h. 24-h after the immobilization stress, behavioral activities were monitored. Immobilization stress-induced an anxiogenic behavior in mice subjected to elevated plus maze test (EPM) and light dark activity test (LDA). 2-h immobilization stress-induced depressive behavior in animals measured by forced swim test (FST). Administration of AC attenuated the immobilization stress-induced behavioral deficits. Highest memory performance was observed in stressed mice that were pre-treated with AC in Morris water maze (MWM). Brain lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities were also estimated. Present study suggests a role of antioxidant enzymes in the attenuation of 2-h stress induced anxiety and depression, and enhanced cognitive function as well by AC. The findings therefore suggest that supplementation of AC may be beneficial in the treatment of anxiety, depression and enhancement of memory function.

Abstract
AIM The inhibitory effect of dopamine on gastric motility is thought to be mediated via a decrease in acetylcholine release resulting from stimulation of enteric neuronal dopamine D(2) receptors. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible involvement of the dopamine D(3) receptor in the regulation of gastric motility in rats using selective dopamine D(3) receptor agonists or a dopamine D(3) receptor antagonist. MAIN METHODS Gastric emptying was assessed using the phenol red method after rats were treated with varying doses of dopamine D(3) receptor agonists or a dopamine D(3) receptor antagonist. KEY FINDINGS S(+)-PD 128,907 (0.01-1 mg/kg, s.c.), a selective dopamine D(3) receptor agonist, dose-dependently delayed gastric emptying in rats. Other dopamine D(3) receptor agonists (i.e., R(+)-7-OH-DPAT [0.03-1 mg/kg, s.c.] and quinpirole [0.01-1 mg/kg, s.c.]) also delayed gastric emptying in rats. Both the selective dopamine D(1) and D(5) receptor agonist SKF-38393 and the selective dopamine D(4) receptor agonist PD 168,077 failed to delay gastric emptying in rats. The selective dopamine D(3) receptor antagonist (+)-S 14297 (10mg/kg, s.c.) partially inhibited the S(+)-PD 128,907-induced delay in gastric emptying. Although an administration of S(+)-PD 128,907 (1-100 μg/kg) into the 4th cerebral ventricle partially and dose-dependently delayed gastric emptying in rats, its administration into the lateral cerebral ventricle did not affect gastric emptying. SIGNIFICANCE The results presented here suggest that peripheral dopamine D(2) receptors and, at least in part, dopamine D(3) and central dopamine D(2)/D(3) receptors play an important role in the regulation of gastric motility in rats.

Abstract
Recently we have identified a dopamine-producing system in the gastric mucosa of rats. All the available morphological data suggest that parietal cells synthesize dopamine. In the present study we investigated the dopaminergic characteristics of isolated parietal cells by different methods. Mixed gastric mucosal cells were isolated and size-fractionated by elutriation. The proportion of neurons, parietal and endocrine cells in the fractions were determined by immunocytochemistry (ICC) using antibodies to neurofilament, proton pump and chromogranin A, respectively. No neurons were found in any of the cell preparations, while 56% parietal cell and 0.0% endocrine cell were achieved in the parietally enriched fraction. By Western blot, a tyrosine hydroxylase (TH, the rate-limiting enzyme of the catecholamine synthesis) immunoreactive protein species was demonstrated in isolated mucosal cells, comigrating with the TH immunoreactivity from PC12 cells. The TH immunoreactivity was colocalized to parietal cells by ICC. Dopamine transporter (DAT), a regulator of extracellular/intracellular dopamine balance in the nervous system, was also demonstrated in parietal cells. A significant amount of dopamine and DOPA were measured by HPLC (13.4 and 9.57 pg/10(6) cell, respectively) in parietally enriched cell fraction. Since this enriched cell fraction was virtually clear of both neurons and endocrine cells, demonstration of TH enzyme, DAT and dopamine in this fraction confirms that the parietal cell population might be a major source of dopamine in the rat stomach, supporting our previous results achieved using whole tissue samples.

Abstract
Dopaminergic compounds affect gastric secretion and response to experimental gastric mucosal injury. We showed previously that the novel dopamine D4 receptor antagonist, clozapine, significantly reduces gastric acid secretion and restraint stress-induced gastric lesions. Because the selectivity of clozapine for D4 receptors has recently been questioned, we tested the ability of a known D1 receptor blocker, SCH23390, to affect clozapine-induced reduction in gastric acid secretion. SCH23390 given i.p. or i.c.v., at doses that did not affect gastric acid secretion, significantly blocked the anti-secretory effect of clozapine, administered either peripherally or centrally. These data suggest that neither clozapine nor SCH23390 exhibit as high a degree of selectivity for the dopamine D4 and D1 receptor, respectively, as previously believed.

Abstract
Dopamine D1/DA1 agonists are associated with significant gastroprotective and antisecretory effects. The new dopamine DA3 agonist, 7-hydroxy-N,N-di-n-propyl-2-aminotetralin (7-OHDPAT), possesses neural and behavioral properties that are similar to those of DA1 agonists. In the present experiments, the effects of 7-OHDPAT on gastric acid secretion in conscious and anaesthetized rats, on restraint stress-induced gastric mucosal injury and on gastric adherent mucus levels were examined. 7-OHDPAT (2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 mg/kg) reduced significantly basal gastric acid secretion in conscious rats (66%, 92% and 78% inhibition, respectively). 7-OHDPAT also reduced significantly gastric acid and pepsin secretion in pylorus-ligated rats. 7-OHDPAT reduced stress-induced gastric mucosal injury at doses of 1.0, 5.0 and 10.0 mg/kg. Gastric adherent mucus was preserved only at the 5.0 mg/kg dose. Neither pretreatment with the DA1 antagonist, SCH23390, nor with the DA2 antagonist, eticlopride, affected 7-OHDPAT-induced reductions in gastric secretion or gastric mucosal injury. Although dopamine DA3 receptors exhibit greater amino acid sequence homology with DA2 receptors than with DA1 receptors, the possibility nevertheless exists that some of the gastrointestinal actions of dopamine and its agonists--both anti-secretory and gastroprotective--may be exerted through activation of DA3 receptors.

Abstract
A variety of dopaminergic compounds influence gastric secretion and response to injury. In particular, agonists of the D1 receptor are gastroprotective when given either centrally of peripherally. In the present studies, we show that an indirect dopamine (DA) promoter, GBR 12909, a selective DA uptake inhibitor given ip but not icv, protects against restraint-cold stress-induced gastric mucosal injury. This protection likely occurred through preservation of gastric adherent mucus, since all doses of GBR 12909 resulted in gastric mucus levels at or near control (non-stressed) values. When given, ip, GBR 12909 did not influence basal gastric acid secretion in conscious rats, however, when given icv, GBR 12909 inhibited gastric acid secretion with an ED50 of about 0.5 microgram (1.13 umoles). We conclude that both central and peripheral DA contributes to gastrointestinal integrity through reduction of aggressive elements in the gut as well as by enhancing gastric mucosal defence.
