Heterosexual activity and cycle length variability: effect of gynecological maturity

Longitudinal associations between women's cycle characteristics and sexual motivation using Flo cycle tracking data

In the current research, we used data from a sample of 16,327 menstrual cycle tracking app users to examine the association between menstrual cycle characteristics and sexual motivation tracked over 10 months of app use. Guided by past work that finds links between menstrual cycle characteristics related to conception risk and sexual motivation, we found that (a) between-women, shorter (r = - 0.04, p = 0.007), more regular cycles predicted small increases in sexual motivation (r = - 0.04, p = 0.001); (b) within-women, shorter cycles predicted greater sexual motivation that month (r = - 0.04, p < 0.001) and (c) the next month (βs: - 0.10 to - 0.06, ps < 0.001), but (d) changes in sexual motivation did not reliably precede changes in cycle length (βs: - 0.01 to 0.02, ps > 0.15). Within-woman analyses also revealed that (e) shorter cycles were followed by more frequent reports of fatigue (β = - 0.06, p < 0.001), insomnia (β = - 0.03, p < 0.001), and food cravings (β = - 0.04, p < 0.001). Together, results suggest that menstrual cycles characteristics and sexual motivation may covary together in ways that reflect changing investments in reproduction. Small effect sizes and lack of experimental control warrant cautious interpretations of results.

Mating Effort Predicts Human Menstrual Cycle Frequency

The human menstrual cycle is characterized by substantial variability both within and between women. Here, we sought to account for such variability by examining whether human menstrual cycle frequency varies as a function of the projected fitness payoffs associated with investment in mating effort. We used structural equation modeling to test the prediction that women whose environmental conditions or life histories favor heavier investment in mating effort would have shorter, more regular cycles. Results supported our hypothesis, revealing that women who project more mating success and have faster life history strategies exhibit greater mating effort and shorter, more regular menstrual cycles. An alternative model that specified cycle frequency as a predictor of mating effort was a poor fit for the data, lending support for the hypothesized directionality of the path between these variables. Together, these results provide some of the first empirical evidence that the length and regularity of the human menstrual cycle may be calibrated to investment in mating effort.

[The role of the vomeronasal system in the formation of the human sexual behaviour]

This review deals with the structure and function of the vomeronasal system and evaluation of its influence on the sexual sphere of humans and animals. Special attention is given to the role of pheromones in the regulation of the sexual behaviour. The data concerning the function of the vomeronasal organ following surgical interventions in the nasal cavity are discussed.

A prospective investigation of the relations among cognitive dietary restraint, subclinical ovulatory disturbances, physical activity, and bone mass in healthy young women

BACKGROUND

Cognitive dietary restraint (CDR) may mediate subclinical ovulatory disturbances, which may result in loss of bone mineral density (BMD). CDR is associated with greater physical activity, which may modify the effect of CDR and ovulatory disturbances on bone mass.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to investigate the relations among CDR, ovulatory disturbances, and physical activity and their effect on BMD in healthy premenopausal women over a 2-y period.

DESIGN

In this prospective cohort study, key explanatory factors, important covariates, and BMD were measured at baseline and at 12 and 24 mo; 225 women completed the baseline assessment, and 189 completed the study. CDR was measured with the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire, and physical activity was measured with the Baecke scale. An average of 9.8 menstrual cycles in 2 y were monitored by using salivary progesterone measurements and urinary ovulation detection kits. Ovulatory disturbances included anovulatory cycles or short luteal phase lengths of <10 d. BMD at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total body was measured by using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. General linear mixed modeling was used to determine predictors of change in BMD over time.

RESULTS

CDR was not associated with ovulatory disturbances or changes in BMD. The average annual rate of change in lumbar spine BMD was decreased by 0.01 g/cm(2) in women who had experienced > or =3 monitored cycles with ovulatory disturbances (P = 0.02).

CONCLUSIONS

CDR did not predict bone loss, and there was no relation between CDR and ovulatory disturbances. Ovulatory disturbances had a negative effect on the rate of change at the lumbar spine. The cause of these disturbances is unknown.

Impact of social environment on female chimpanzee reproductive cycles

The socio-sexual environment of a female is known to affect ovarian function. Increased male contact can enhance menstrual cycle regularity. Conversely, social deprivation constitutes a form of stress that often alters cyclicity and the secretion of reproductive hormones. The present study was carried out on captive female chimpanzees to examine possible interactions among housing conditions, menstrual cycle length, morphological changes in secondary sexual character expression and endocrine release patterns related to follicular and luteal function. Animals were housed over a period of 2 years either with a male conspecific or singly. Blood samples were collected over three cycles, and anogenital swelling changes registered to define menstrual cycle phases. Fecal sampling techniques were used to monitor cortisol as a measure of stress-load. Male presence seemed to affect female cyclicity. Females housed with a male had shorter and more regular cycles than singly housed females. Prolactin, gonadotropins and estradiol levels were generally higher in paired females during specific cycle phases. Group variation was not always significant. No differences were found in progesterone. Sexually cohabited females tended to have lower fecal cortisol metabolites immediately before and after maximum tumescence. We suggest that the close behavioral, physical and olfactory contact with a male conspecific can act as a sort of zeitgeber to modulate ovarian function by stabilizing the female cycle and, perhaps, enhancing folliculogenesis and ovulation.

Pheromonal influences on sociosexual behavior in postmenopausal women

To determine whether a putative human sex-attractant pheromone increases specific sociosexual behaviors of postmenopausal women, we tested a chemically synthesized formula derived from research with underarm secretions from heterosexually active, fertile women that was recently tested on young women. Participants (n = 44, mean age = 57 years) were postmenopausal women who volunteered for a double-blind placebo-controlled study designed, to test an odorless pheromone, added to your preferred fragrance, to learn if it might increase the romance in your life. During the experimental 6-week period, a significantly greater proportion of participants using the pheromone formula (40.9%) than placebo (13.6%) recorded an increase over their own weekly average baseline frequency of petting, kissing, and affection (p = .02). More pheromone (68.2%) than placebo (40.9%) users experienced an increase in at least one of the four intimate sociosexual behaviors (p = .04). Sexual motivation frequency, as expressed in masturbation, was not increased in pheromone users. These results suggest that the pheromone formulation worn with perfume for a period of 6 weeks has sex-attractant effects for postmenopausal women.

Coitus and menstruation in perimenopausal women

The objective of the study was to determine whether coitus during menstruation in perimenopausal women is associated with increased menstrual flow defined as either heavier flow, more days of flow, or both. Initial interviews for the Stanford Menopause Study were conducted locally with 160 perimenopausal women. Six weeks later, additional data were gathered from 121 women. At a third interview, 6-10 weeks later at Stanford University, 56 of 57 subjects (mean age 48.8 +/- 3.9 SD) provided data on menstrual flow and coital behavior. At both the first and third interview, more than half of the women reported a pattern of increased menstrual flow. At the third interview, 83% of those reporting increased menstrual flow also reported a behavioral pattern of coitus during menses. Only 10% with diminished flow acknowledged such a pattern. Women who abstained from sex during menses were not less regular in coital activity at other times nor did the data reveal them to be less orgasmic than women who did not abstain. Our data reveal an association between coitus during menstruation and longer and/or heavier menstrual flow. The etiology of such increased flow is usually believed to be hormonal, but coitus during menstruation may be another important variable.

No evidence for menstrual synchrony in lesbian couples

Menstrual synchrony was investigated in a sample of 29 cohabiting lesbian couples, ranging in age from 22 to 48 years. One or both partners kept prospective daily records of variables including menses onset dates, intimate contact, and sexual activity. All women reported daily intimate interaction with their partners; none reported intimate interaction with men. Despite these potentially optimal conditions for the manifestation of synchrony, the differences between dyad members in menses onset dates were distributed randomly, and there was no evidence of convergence. In fact, most dyads exhibited divergence of onset dates. Reasons for lack of synchrony in this sample are discussed; one conclusion is that there is no solid evidence that menstrual synchrony is a stable attribute of past or contemporary human populations.
