Abstract
Conformational analysis of (2R,3S,4R)-(+)-3,3',4,4',7-flavanpentol, a flavonoid compound displaying both antioxidant and pro-oxidant properties, is performed by molecular mechanics and density functional theory calculations both in the gas phase and in methanol solution by using the Polarizable Continuum Model. Nine different conformations are identified. Absorption (UV) and circular dichroism (CD) spectra and optical rotations are calculated by means of time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and compared with experiments. The effects of a complex environment formed by water and proline-rich peptide molecules on the conformational characteristics of (2R,3S,4R)-(+)-3,3',4,4',7-flavanpentol and therefore on its UV and CD spectra are investigated by atomistic molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract
Circular dichroism is a powerful tool for establishing the absolute configuration of flavonoids and proanthocyanidin analogues. It has been utilized to study the configuration of flavanones, dihydroflavonols (3-hydroxyflavanones), flavan-3-ols, flavan-4-ols, flavan-3,4-diols, flavans, isoflavans, isoflavanones, pterocarpans, 6a-hydroxypterocarpans, rotenoids, 12a-hydroxyrotenoids, neoflavonoids, 3,4-dihydro-4-arylcoumarins, 4-arylflavan-3-ols, auronols, homoisoflavanones, proanthocyanidins, and various classes of biflavonoids. Results relevant to the correlation of circular dichroic data and the absolute configuration of the diastereoisomers of some of the above classes of compounds will be discussed.

Abstract
The correlation between the helicity (absolute conformation) of the O-heterocyclic ring of chiral 2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]furan (1) and chromane (2) derivatives and their (1)L(b) band CD was investigated. The same helicity rule was found for both unsubstituted chromophores: P/M helicity of the heterocyclic ring leads to a negative/positive CD within the (1)L(b) band. While the substitution of the fused benzene ring by achiral substituents does not change this helicity rule for the chromane chromophore, it leads to its inversion for the 2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]furan chromophores. On the basis of these observations, the published absolute configurations of natural flavonol and pterocarpan derivatives were confirmed and the configurational assignments of several natural neolignans revised.

Abstract
The absolute configurations of the enantiomers of N,N,1-trimethyl-cis- and trans-1-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-3-naphthylamines (Ia and Ib) were assigned tentatively from the circular dichroism spectrum of a bridged ketone derived by cyclization of optically active 1-methyl-cis-1-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-3-naphthoic acid (IIa). Thus, (--)-IIa and the corresponding amine, (--)-Ia, were assigned the (2S, 4R)-configuration. Epimerization of (--)-IIa through its methyl ester yielded the trans-acid, (--)-IIb, which established the absolute configuration of (--)-IIb and the corresponding amine, (--)-Ib, as (2R, 4R).
