Abstract
Two representative organic photoreactions, namely a bimolecular photocycloaddition and a monomolecular photorearrangement, are presented that are accelerated when the reaction is performed "on-water", that is, at the water-substrate interface with no solvation of the reaction components. According to the established models of ground-state reactions "on-water", the enhanced efficiency of the photoreactions is explained by hydrophobic effects (Paternó-Büchi reaction) or specific hydrogen bonding (di-π-methane rearrangement) at the water-substrate interface that decrease the energy of the respective transition state. These results point to the potential of this approach to conduct photoreactions more efficiently in an ecologically favorable medium.

Abstract
Dibenzobarrelene derivatives, that are annelated with a pyrrolinium unit [N,N-dialkyl-3,4-(9',10'-dihydro-9',10'-anthraceno-3-pyrrolinium) derivatives], undergo a photo-induced di-π-methane rearrangement upon triplet sensitization to give the corresponding cationic dibenzosemibullvalene derivatives [N,N-dialkyl-3,4-{8c,8e-(4b,8b-dihydrodibenzo[a,f]cyclopropa[cd]pentaleno)}pyrrolidinium derivatives]. Whereas the covalent attachment of a benzophenone functionality to the pyrrolinium nitrogen atom did not result in an internal triplet sensitization, the introduction of a benzophenone unit as part of the counter ion enables the di-π-methane rearrangement of the dibenzobarrelene derivative in the solid-state. Preliminary experiments indicate that a cationic pyrrolidinium-annelated dibenzosemibullvalene may act as phase-transfer catalyst in alkylation reactions.

Abstract
The synthesis of 1,2-naphtho-annelated barrelene derivatives, namely dimethyl-7,12-dihydro-7,12-ethenobenzo[a]anthracene-13,14-dicarboxylate (4a) and dimethyl-7,14-dihydro-7,14-ethenodibenzo[a,j]-anthracene-15,16-dicarboxylate (4b), and the investigation of their photoreactivity in solution and in the solid state is reported. The irradiation of 4a and 4b resulted in regioselective di-π-methane rearrangements to give semibullvalene products; however, the product distribution is inverted upon changing the reaction medium from solution to the solid state. In solution, an α-naphtho–vinyl bridging predominates as the initial photochemical step because of the selective stabilization of the corresponding transition state, as discussed on the basis of the structures of the related biradical intermediates, whereas the solid-state photoreaction is significantly influenced by the steric constraints within the crystal lattice that only allow a β-naphtho–vinyl bridging.

Abstract
Triplet state mediated di-pi-methane rearrangements of dibenzobarrelenes give a variety of interesting synthons, formed as primary and secondary photoproducts. These synthons could find use for the synthesis of complex synthetic targets. This tutorial review highlights the photoisomerisation of some bridgehead substituted dibenzobarrelenes and the products derived from them. Selected examples of photoisomerisations proceeding through a tri-pi-methane pathway are also included.
