We report here the
application of silyl enol ether moieties as
efficient alkene coupling partners within cobalt-mediated intramolecular
Pauson–Khand reactions. This cyclization strategy delivers
synthetically valuable oxygenated cyclopentenone products in yields
of ≤93% from both ketone- and aldehyde-derived silyl enol ethers,
incorporates both terminal and internal alkyne partners, and delivers
a variety of decorated systems, including more complex tricyclic structures.
Facile removal of the silyl protecting group reveals oxygenated sites
for potential further elaboration.

Abstract
The Pauson-Khand reaction (PKR) is a formal [2 + 2 + 1] cycloaddition involving an alkyne, an alkene and carbon monoxide mediated by a hexacarbonyldicobaltalkyne complex to yield cyclopentenones in a single step. This versatile reaction has become a method of choice for the synthesis of cyclopentenone and its derivatives since its discovery in the early seventies. The aim of this review is to point out the applications of PKR in the total synthesis of terpenes.

Abstract
Five membered carbocycles are important building blocks for many biologically active molecules. Moreover, substituted cyclopentenones (e.g. cyclopentenone prostaglandins) exhibit characteristic biological activity. The efficiency and atom economy of the Pauson-Khand reaction render this process potentially one of the most attractive methods for the synthesis of such compounds. Although it was discovered in its intermolecular form, the scope of the intermolecular Pauson-Khand reaction has always been limited by the poor reactivity and selectivity of the alkene component. The past decade, especially the last three years, has seen concerted efforts to broaden the scope of this reaction. In this overview, we provide a comprehensive and critical coverage of the intermolecular Pauson-Khand reaction based on the reactivity characteristics of different classes of alkenes and a rationalization of successes and misfortunes in this area.

Abstract
[Reaction: see text]. Palladium pincer-complex-catalyzed selenylation of propargyl-, allyl-, benzyl-, and benzoyl halides could be achieved under mild reaction conditions employing trimethylstannylphenylselenide as selenylating agent. This reaction has a high functional group tolerance as carbmethoxy, tosylamino, nitro, aryl bromide, and unprotected hydroxy groups are tolerated. Mechanistic studies indicate that the catalytic cycle is initiated by formation of a selenium-coordinated palladium pincer-complex, which subsequently reacts with the electrophilic substrate. DFT calculations were performed to explore the mechanism of the transfer of the organoselenium group from palladium to the substrate. These modeling studies revealed some interesting differences between the mechanism of the organoselenium group transfer and (the previously published) organostannane transfer reactions.

An inexpensive and commercially available odourless additive, dodecyl methyl sulfide, has been shown to be a highly effective promoter in the Pauson-Khand cyclisation of both intra- and intermolecular substrates, affording good to excellent yields of cyclopentenone products.

[reaction: see text] Cyclopropylacyl radicals derived from S-cyclopropylacyl xanthates (dithiocarbonates) undergo intermolecular additions to olefins without loss of CO or ring opening. In the presence of a phenyl ring on carbon C-1 of the cyclopropane ring, loss can be made to occur in the absence of an olefinic trap. The adducts from the cyclopropylacyl radical additions are easily converted into enones by base-induced beta-elimination of the xanthate group.

Abstract
Two series of 3-(substituted phenyl)-5-alkyl-2,5-dihydrofuran-2-ones related to a natural product, (-)incrustoporine, were synthesized and their in vitro antifungal activity evaluated. The compounds with halogen substituents on the phenyl ring exhibited selective antifungal activity against the filamentous strains of Absidia corymbifera and Aspergillus fumigatus. On the other hand, the influence of the length of the alkyl chain at C(5) was marginal. The antifungal effect of the most active compound against the above strains was higher than that of ketoconazole, and close to that of amphotericin B. In order to verify the hypothesis about a possible relationship between the Michael-accepting ability of the compounds and their antifungal activity, a series of simple carbanalogues, 2-(substituted phenyl)cyclopent-2-enones, was prepared and subjected to antifungal activity assay as well.

Abstract
The cedrene carbon skeleton was rapidly assembled from a simple monocyclic precursor by the strategic use of a high yielding intramolecular Khand cyclization reaction. Further synthetic manipulations provided a concise formal total synthesis of alpha- and beta-cedrene. Reaction: see text.

Abstract
[RuCl2(CO)3]2/Et3N and (eta 3-C3H5)RuBr(CO)3/Et3N are highly effective catalyst systems for carbonylative cyclization of allylic carbonates with alkenes to give the corresponding cyclopentenones in high yields. For example, treatment of allyl methyl carbonate (1a) with 2-norbornene (2a) in the presence of a catalytic amount of [RuCl2(CO)3]2 (2.5 mol %) and Et3N (10 mol %) at 120 degrees C for 5 h under 3 atm of carbon monoxide gave the corresponding cyclopentenone, exo-4-methyltricyclo[5.2.1.0(2,6)]dec-4-en-3-one (3a), in 80% yield with high stereoselectivity (exo 100%).
