Evolution of the sex ratio and effective number under gynodioecy and androdioecy

We address the evolution of effective number of individuals under androdioecy and gynodioecy. We analyze dynamic models of autosomal modifiers of weak effect on sex expression. In our zygote control models, the sex expressed by a zygote depends on its own genotype, while in our maternal control models, it depends on the genotype of its maternal parent. Our analysis unifies full multi-dimensional local stability analysis with the Li-Price equation, which for all its heuristic appeal, describes evolutionary change over a single generation. We define a point in the neighborhood of a fixation state from which a single-generation step indicates the asymptotic behavior of the frequency of a modifier allele initiated at an arbitrary point near the fixation state. A concept of heritability appropriate for the evolutionary modification of sex emerges from the Li-Priceframework. We incorporate our theoretical analysis into our previously-developed Bayesian inference framework to develop a new method for inferring the viability of gonochores (males or females) relative to hermaphrodites. Applying this approach to microsatellite data derived from natural populations of the gynodioecious plant Schiedea salicaria and the androdioecious killifish Kryptolebias marmoratus, we find that while female and hermaphrodite S. salicaria appear to have similar viabilities, male K. marmoratus appear to survive to reproductive age at less than half the rate of hermaphrodites.

Evolution of S-domain receptor-like kinases in land plants and origination of S-locus receptor kinases in Brassicaceae

Background

The S-domain serine/threonine receptor-like kinases (SRLKs) comprise one of the largest and most rapidly expanding subfamilies in the plant receptor-like/Pelle kinase (RLKs) family. The founding member of this subfamily, the S-locus receptor kinase (SRK), functions as the female determinant of specificity in the self-incompatibility (SI) responses of crucifers. Two classes of proteins resembling the extracellular S domain (designated S-domain receptor-like proteins, SRLPs) or the intracellular kinase domain (designated S-domain receptor-like cytoplasmic kinases, SRLCKs) of SRK are also ubiquitous in land plants, indicating that the SRLKs are composite molecules that originated by domain fusion of the two component proteins. Here, we explored the origin and diversification of SRLKs by phylogenomic methods.

Results

Based on the distribution patterns of SRLKs and SRLCKs in a reconciled species-domain tree, a maximum parsimony model was then established for simultaneously inferring and dating gene duplication/loss and fusion /fission events in SRLK evolution. Various SRK alleles from crucifer species were then included in our phylogenetic analyses to infer the origination of SRKs by identifying the proper outgroups.

Conclusions

Two gene fusion events were inferred and the major gene fusion event occurred in the common ancestor of land plants generated almost all of extant SRLKs. The functional diversification of duplicated SRLKs was illustrated by molecular evolution analyses of SRKs. Our findings support that SRKs originated as two ancient haplotypes derived from a pair of tandem duplicate genes through random regulatory neo-/sub- functionalization in the common ancestor of the Brassicaceae.

Correlated evolution of self-incompatibility and clonal reproduction in Solanum (Solanaceae)

It has been suggested that clonality provides reproductive assurance in cross-fertilizing species subject to pollen limitation, relieving one of the main selective pressures favoring the evolution of self-fertilization. According to this hypothesis, cross-fertilizing species subject to pollen limitation should often be clonal. Here, we investigated the association between clonality and a genetic mechanism enforcing outcrossing, self-incompatibility, in Solanum (Solanaceae). We collected self-incompatibility and clonality information on 87 species, and looked for an association between these two traits. To account for the contribution of shared evolutionary history to this association, we incorporated phylogenetic information from chloroplast (NADH dehydrogenase subunit F) sequence data. We found that self-incompatibility is strongly associated with clonal reproduction: all self-incompatible species reproduce clonally, while the absence of clonality is widespread among self-compatible taxa. The observed correlation persists after taking into account shared phylogenetic history, assumptions about the evolutionary history of self-incompatibility, uncertainty associated with phylogeny estimation, and associations with life history (annual/perennial). Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that clonality provides reproductive assurance, and suggest that the consequences of clonal growth in the evolution of plant reproductive strategies may be more significant than previously thought.

ON THE EVOLUTIONARY COSTS OF SELF-INCOMPATIBILITY: INCOMPLETE REPRODUCTIVE COMPENSATION DUE TO POLLEN LIMITATION

Pollen limitation affects plants with diverse reproductive systems and ecologies. In self-incompatible (SI) species, pollen limitation may preclude full reproductive compensation for prezygotic rejection of pollen. We present a model designed to explore the effects of incomplete reproductive compensation on evolutionary changes at a modifier locus that regulates the level of SI expression. Our results indicate that incomplete reproductive compensation greatly increases the evolutionary costs of SI, particularly in populations with low S-allele diversity. The evolutionary fate of modifiers of SI expression depends on the rate at which they are transmitted to future generations as well as the effects of SI on offspring number and quality. Partial SI expression can represent a stable condition rather than an evolutionarily transient state between full expression and full suppression. This unanticipated result provides the first theoretical support for the evolutionary stability of such mixed mating systems, the existence of which has recently been documented.

On the evolution of genetic incompatibility systems. V. Origin of sporophytic self-incompatibility in response to overdominance in viability

Conditions for the origin of partial sporophytic self-incompatibility (SSI) are obtained from two quantitative models, which differ with respect to the determination of offspring viability. Offspring viability depends solely on the source (self or nonself) of the fertilizing pollen in the first model, which describes changes only at a primitive S-locus itself. Two loci evolve in the second model: overdominant viability selection maintains an arbitrary number of alleles at one locus, with SSI under the control of a separate locus. In both cases, the origin of SSI requires that the relative change in the numbers of offspring derived by the two reproductive modes compensate for the twofold cost of outcrossing. In the first model studied, the viability of inbred offspring fully determines the relative change in the numbers of inbred and outbred offspring produced. In the second model, the relative change in offspring numbers depends in addition on associations between the S-locus and the viability locus. Because these two-locus associations are comparable in magnitude to the differences between the viabilities of inbred and outbred offspring, SSI can arise under less restrictive conditions than expected from the one-locus model. Greater allelic multiplicity at the viability locus facilitates the origin of SSI by reducing the relative viability of inbred offspring. Tight linkage between the S-locus and the viability locus and high rates of receipt of self-pollen promote the generation and maintenance of associations between the S-locus and the viability locus. In populations in which more than two viability alleles are maintained, the active S-allele can invade even in the absence of linkage with the viability locus. The present study establishes that incompatibility systems can arise in response to identity disequilibrium between a modifier of incompatibility and a locus subject to overdominant viability selection; in particular, compensation for the twofold cost of outcrossing does not require preexisting gametic level disequilibria.

On the evolution of genetic incompatibility systems. III. Introduction of weak gametophytic self-incompatibility under partial inbreeding

I explore the proposition that genetic incompatibility systems serve as a means for parents to evaluate and discriminate among their own offspring. Conditions for the initial increase of gametophytic self-incompatibility in a self-compatible population undergoing selfing, sibmating, and random outcrossing are reported. The adaptive value of reducing the concordance between offspring and maternal genotypes depends upon the relative changes in the numbers of offspring derived by the three modes, parent-offspring relatedness, and the magnitude of distortion of transmission ratios through pollen. Recessivity of stylar expression and low rates of receipt of pollen from related individuals facilitate the evolution of self-incompatibility. Viewed as a means of preferential maternal investment in offspring of high quality, self-incompatibility may be regarded as serving a function in common with diverse phenomena, including sexual selection, brood reduction, and other forms of prezygotic and postzygotic incompatibility. Associations between incompatibility loci and loci expressing inbreeding depression are expected to improve the reliability of the level of concordance at incompatibility loci as a measure of genomic homozygosity and offspring quality.
