The characteristics of a visual defect associated with abnormal responses to both colour and luminance

Retinotopic organisation of cortical mechanisms responsive to colour: evidence from patient studies

This paper deals with the visual responses of three patients who have impaired colour vision consequent on cortical dysfunction which, in two of them, is associated with demonstrable neuronal damage. The studies to be described are concerned particularly with the spatial attributes of their chromatic response mechanisms. Data are presented which establish that a hemianope GY has coarse chromatic discrimination for large stimuli located within his 'blind' hemifield. GY responds to stimuli containing differently coloured equiluminant components as if the coloured components were averaged over the whole field and it is speculated that such spatial averaging may correspond to the process which, in normal vision, provides compensation for change of illuminant in order to achieve colour constancy. Colour constancy is impaired in a second patient, BL, who has cortical lesions involving the lingual and fusiform gyri, areas which are partially spared in GY. It is shown that movement, but not colour, presented to GY's normal hemifield generates a response localised in his blind hemifield and disinhibitory interaction between movement and colour is illustrated for a patient MW, in whom colour chromatic stimuli generate spreading inhibition of visual responses. This inhibitory interaction is propagated between widely separated stimuli, including those which are located on opposite sides of the vertical meridian. We discuss these experimental results in relation to anatomical and physiological mechanisms of the primate visual cortex.

Normal saturation processing provides a model for understanding the effects of disease on color perception

Saturation discrimination has been reported to be affected early in the course of a disease. Our empirical data show a compressive curvi-linear relationship between opponent/nonopponent channel activity and saturation thresholds in normal trichromatic observers. This relationship can be explained by a model based on the Hurvich and Jameson saturation coefficient (1957), Psychology Reviews, 64, 384-404. The model considers effects of both selective and nonselective channel losses on saturation processing based on the assumption that disease produces elevated thresholds while maintaining normal psychometric response functions. Both the model and data support clinical observations of saturation losses occurring early in disease. However, the results also indicate that saturation may not be the best modality for monitoring long-term progression of such conditions. We suggest that the different processing characteristics for blue-yellow thresholds may yield added information for saturation testing under some circumstances and that saturation processing occurs at a higher cortical level.

A new abnormality of human vision provides evidence of interactions between cortical mechanisms sensitive to movement and those sensitive to colour

We present the results of a psychophysical study on a human observer, MW, which describe his abnormal visual responses to moving stimuli. It has been shown previously that this subject has normal vision for stationary, achromatic patterns, but responds highly abnormally to saturated chromatic, and especially red stimuli. We now report that like chromatic stimuli, moving black and white patterns elicit an inhibitory response which extends beyond the visual field area covered by the moving stimulus itself, and suppresses detection of stationary, achromatic patterns. Although both chromatic and moving stimuli generate similar percepts in association with their inhibitory activities, these latter differ in several respects, and we conclude that they have different neural origins. We show that in addition to their separate inhibitory actions on detection of achromatic patterns, movement and colour exert mutually inhibitory effects. Movement is markedly effective in limiting the inhibitory spread associated with colour, regardless of the positions in the visual field of the moving and coloured stimuli. Such spatially diffuse activity is characteristic of higher visual processing in pre-occipital cortical visual areas.

Selective damage to chromatic mechanisms in neuro-ophthalmic diseases I. Review of published evidence

Acquired color deficiencies may correspond to a general, non-selective loss of visual sensitivity. We summarise evidence for the opposite view that, in some cases, chromatic sensitivity can be more (or less) reduced than achromatic sensitivity. This evidence is based on: (1) Disproportion between chromatic and achromatic isopters; (2) Differential damage to red-green and blue-yellow color vision; (3) Detection static perimetry; (4) The foveal photochromatic interval; (5) The two color threshold technique; (6) Spectral sensitivity on a white background; (7) Single unit and histological studies of the retina and lateral geniculate nucleus; (8) Lesions of the prestriate color area; (9) Selective damage to achromatic processes. Possible problems of interpretation are considered and a new technique for comparing chromatic and achromatic sensitivity is briefly described.

A colour-dependent abnormality in human visual detection of stimulus motion and spatial structure

We have studied the wavelength dependence of visual responses in a single human subject, M.W., who has an unusual visual defect. It is shown that for red stimuli, both spatial resolution for grating patterns and detection of target movement are grossly abnormal. On the basis of these and other [8] experimental data, we argue that M.W.'s response pattern implies interdependent central visual processing of colour, movement and spatial structure. We examine this conclusion in relation to recent anatomical and electrophysiological findings.

An anomaly in the response of the eye to light of short wavelengths

Adaptation of the human eye to long-wavelength light leaves it insensitive to short-wavelengths: a blue flash that is visible in the presence of a yellow adapting field may remain invisible for several seconds after the field has been turned off (see experiment 1 and Appendix). This ‘transient tritanopia’ occurs for a large range of adapting intensities, but is abolished if the adapting field is very bright (experiment 2). The loss of sensitivity is primarily confined to the blue-sensitive cone mechanism (experiments 2 a , 3 and 4 ; and Appendix) and can be produced by small attenuations of the adapting field (experiment 5). It occurs in both foveal and parafoveal vision (experiment 6) but is absent when adapting and test stimuli are presented to opposite eyes (experiment 7). It was found in a protanope (experiment 9 a ) and, in a modified form, in a deuteranope (experiment 9 b ). No differences in sensitivity were found for blue flashes presented in the light and dark phases of a field flickering at a rate above the fusion frequency (Appendix).
