The effect of flicker on foveal and peripheral thresholds for oscillatory motion

Interactions of flicker and motion

We present a series of novel observations about interactions between flicker and motion that lead to three distinct perceptual effects. We use the term flicker to describe alternating changes in a stimulus' luminance or color (i.e. a circle that flickers from black to white and visa-versa). When objects flicker, three distinct phenomena can be observed: (1) Flicker Induced Motion (FLIM) in which a single, stationary object, appears to move when it flickers at certain rates; (2) Flicker Induced Motion Suppression (FLIMS) in which a moving object appears to be stationary when it flickers at certain rates, and (3) Flicker-Induced Induced-Motion (FLIIM) in which moving objects that are flickering induce another flickering stationary object to appear to move. Across four psychophysical experiments, we characterize key stimulus parameters underlying these flicker-motion interactions. Interactions were strongest in the periphery and at flicker frequencies above 10 Hz. Induced motion occurred not just for luminance flicker, but for isoluminant color changes as well. We also found that the more physically moving objects there were, the more motion induction to stationary objects occurred. We present demonstrations that the effects reported here cannot be fully accounted for by eye movements: we show that the perceived motion of multiple stationary objects that are induced to move via flicker can appear to move independently and in random directions, whereas eye movements would have caused all of the objects to appear to move coherently. These effects highlight the fundamental role of spatiotemporal dynamics in the representation of motion and the intimate relationship between flicker and motion.

Comparison of form and motion coherence processing in autistic spectrum disorders and dyslexia

A large body of research has reported visual perception deficits in both people with dyslexia and autistic spectrum disorders. In this study, we compared form and motion coherence detection between a group of adults with high-functioning autism, a group with Asperger's disorder, a group with dyslexia, and a matched control group. It was found that motion detection was intact in dyslexia and Asperger. Individuals with high-functioning autism showed a general impaired ability to detect coherent form and motion. Participants with Asperger's syndrome showed lower form coherence thresholds than the dyslexic and normally developing adults. The results are discussed with respect to the involvement of the dorsal and ventral pathways in developmental disorders.

Motion perception during involuntary eye vibration

Retinal motion caused by reflexive or voluntary eye movements is rarely misinterpreted as object motion, as if the visual system discounted the contribution of these eye movements to retinal motion. Yet, involuntary eye movements caused by mechanical eye vibration is often interpreted as object motion unless the vibration has high frequency, in which case only image blur may be noticed. In these latter conditions, however, a light flickering above the fusion limit is vividly perceived to undergo oscillatory motion over its static surround. We determined the conditions of this phenomenon, showing that the perceived frequency of illusory oscillation equals the difference between flicker frequency and the frequency of vibration of the eyes. This outcome is explained as a result of the low-pass temporal frequency characteristic of vision, which further predicts that the same effect should occur if the flickering light is vibrated and observed with static eyes. This prediction was corroborated empirically. We also determined the minimal amplitude of oscillation required to perceive motion as a function of postural stability and the presence of static references, finding an amplitude threshold of approximately 1 arcmin with postural stability in dim-light conditions, which increases to approximately 2 arcmin with postural instability in the dark.

Perception of coherent motion in random dot displays by pigeons and humans

Pigeons and humans were required to discriminate coherent from random motion in dynamic random dot displays. Coherence and velocity thresholds were determined for both species, and both thresholds were found to be substantially higher for pigeons than for humans. The results are discussed with reference to differences in motion processing in mammals and birds. It is suggested that the inferior motion sensitivity of pigeons can be attributed to poorer spatiotemporal motion integration.

Forced-choice staircases with fixed step sizes: asymptotic and small-sample properties

Visual detection and discrimination thresholds are often measured using adaptive staircases, and most studies use transformed (or weighted) up/down methods with fixed step sizes--in the spirit of Wetherill and Levitt (Br J Mathemat Statist Psychol 1965;18:1-10) or Kaernbach (Percept Psychophys 1991;49:227-229)--instead of changing step size at each trial in accordance with best-placement rules--in the spirit of Watson and Pelli (Percept Psychophys 1983;47:87-91). It is generally assumed that a fixed-step-size (FSS) staircase converges on the stimulus level at which a correct response occurs with the probabilities derived by Wetherill and Levitt or Kaernbach, but this has never been proved rigorously. This work used simulation techniques to determine the asymptotic and small-sample convergence of FSS staircases as a function of such parameters as the up/down rule, the size of the steps up or down, the starting stimulus level, or the spread of the psychometric function. The results showed that the asymptotic convergence of FSS staircases depends much more on the sizes of the steps than it does on the up/down rule. Yet, if the size delta+ of a step up differs from the size delta- of a step down in a way that the ratio delta-/delta+ is constant at a specific value that changes with up/down rule, then convergence percent-correct is unaffected by the absolute sizes of the steps. For use with the popular one-, two-, three- and four-down/one-up rules, these ratios must respectively be set at 0.2845, 0.5488, 0.7393 and 0.8415, rendering staircases that converge on the 77.85%-, 80.35%-, 83.15%- and 85.84%-correct points. Wetherill and Levitt's transformed up/down rules--which require delta-/delta+ = 1--and the general version of Kaernbach's weighted up/down rule--which allows any delta-/delta+ ratio--fail to reach their presumed targets. The small-sample study showed that, even with the optimal settings, short FSS staircases (up to 20 reversals in length) are subject to some bias, and their precision is less than reasonable, but their characteristics improve when the size delta+ of a step up is larger than half the spread of the psychometric function. Practical recommendations are given for the design of efficient and trustworthy FSS staircases.
