Disparity tuning of the stereoscopic (cyclopean) motion aftereffect

Three-dimensional motion aftereffects reveal distinct direction-selective mechanisms for binocular processing of motion through depth

Motion aftereffects are historically considered evidence for neuronal populations tuned to specific directions of motion. Despite a wealth of motion aftereffect studies investigating 2D (frontoparallel) motion mechanisms, there is a remarkable dearth of psychophysical evidence for neuronal populations selective for the direction of motion through depth (i.e., tuned to 3D motion). We compared the effects of prolonged viewing of unidirectional motion under dichoptic and monocular conditions and found large 3D motion aftereffects that could not be explained by simple inheritance of 2D monocular aftereffects. These results (1) demonstrate the existence of neurons tuned to 3D motion as distinct from monocular 2D mechanisms, (2) show that distinct 3D direction selectivity arises from both interocular velocity differences and changing disparities over time, and (3) provide a straightforward psychophysical tool for further probing 3D motion mechanisms.

Selective attention and cyclopean motion processing

The effect of diverted selective attention on the induction of the cyclopean motion aftereffect (aftereffect induced from dynamic disparity information) was investigated. The luminance motion aftereffect was examined for comparison. During diverted-attention trials, observers ignored background adapting motion and performed a low-load or high-load rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task presented in the center of the motion display. Baseline motion aftereffects were obtained with no diverted attention. The results showed that the cyclopean motion aftereffect, similar to the luminance motion aftereffect, declined only modestly under diverted-attention conditions. Selective attention appears to play a modest role in the visual processing of cyclopean motion.

Buildup and decay of a three-dimensional rotational aftereffect obtained with a three-dimensional figure

Gaps in past literature have raised questions regarding the kinds of stimuli that can lead to three-dimensional (3-D) rotation aftereffects. Further, the characteristics of the buildup and decay of such aftereffects are not clear. In the present experiments, rotation aftereffects were generated by projections of cube-like stimuli whose dynamic perspective motions gave rise to the perception of rotation in unambiguous directions; test stimuli consisted of similar cubes whose rotation directions were ambiguous. In experiment 1, the duration of the adaptation stimulus was varied and it was found that the 3-D rotation aftereffect develops with a time constant of approximately 26 s. In experiment 2, the duration between adaptation and testing was varied. It was found that the 3-D rotation aftereffect has a decay constant of about 9 s, similar to that observed with 2-D motion aftereffects. Experiment 3 showed that the rotation aftereffects were not simple depth aftereffects. To account for these aftereffects and related data, a modification of an existing neural-network model is suggested.

Stereoillusory motion concomitant with lateral head movements

Stationary objects in a stereogram can appear to move when viewed with lateral head movements. This illusory motion can be explained by the motion-distance invariance hypothesis, which states that illusory motion covaries with perceived depth in accordance with the geometric relationship between the position of the stereo stimuli and the head. We examined two predictions based on the hypothesis. In Experiment 1, illusory motion was studied while varying the magnitude of binocular disparity and the magnitude of lateral head movement, holding viewing distance constant. In Experiment 2, illusory motion was studied while varying binocular disparity and viewing distance, holding magnitude of head movement constant. Ancillary measures of perceived depth, perceived viewing distance, and perceived magnitude of lateral head movement were also obtained. The results from the two experiments show that the extent of illusory motion varies as a function of perceived depth, supporting the motion-distance invariance hypothesis. The results also show that the extent of illusory motion is close to that predicted from the geometry in crossed disparity conditions, whereas it is greater than the predicted motion in uncrossed disparity conditions. Furthermore, predictions based on perceptual variables were no more accurate than predictions based on geometry.

The stereoscopic (cyclopean) motion aftereffect is dependent upon the temporal frequency of adapting motion

This study investigated whether the stereoscopic (cyclopean) motion aftereffect (induced by adaptation to moving binocular disparity information) is dependent upon the temporal frequency or speed of adapting motion. The stereoscopic stimuli were gratings created from disparity embedded in a dynamic random-dot stereogram. Across different combinations of stereoscopic spatial frequency, temporal frequency and speed of adapting motion, the duration of the aftereffect was dependent upon temporal frequency (maximal aftereffect=1-2 cyc s(-1)). These results support the idea that stereoscopic motion is processed by a cortical mechanism that computes cyclopean motion energy.

The stereoscopic (cyclopean) motion aftereffect is selective for spatial frequency and orientation of disparity modulation

Across two experiments, this study investigated the spatial frequency tuning and orientation tuning (both in the disparity domain) of the stereoscopic (cyclopean) motion aftereffect. In Experiment 1, observers adapted to a moving stereoscopic grating of a given cyclopean spatial frequency and tested for the motion aftereffect with a static grating of the same or different spatial frequency. Robust motion aftereffects were induced only when the spatial frequency of the adapt and test stimuli was the same. In Experiment 2, observers adapted to a moving stereoscopic grating of a given cyclopean orientation and tested for the motion aftereffect with a static grating of the same or different orientation. Robust motion aftereffects were induced only when the orientation of the adapt and test stimuli was the same. Together, these results suggest that the stereoscopic motion aftereffect is tuned for cyclopean spatial frequency and orientation which, in turn, suggest that the stereoscopic motion aftereffect is mediated by low-level oriented spatial-frequency mechanisms.

Stereoscopic (cyclopean) motion sensing

This paper reviews literature on the motion processing of dynamic change in binocular disparity, called stereoscopic (cyclopean) motion. Studies investigating the visual processing of stereoscopic motion in the Z-axis, stereoscopic motion in the X/Y plane, and cyclopean motion are discussed. It is concluded that stereoscopic motion is processed by a motion-sensing system composed of special-purpose mechanisms that function like low-level motion sensors. For animals with binocular vision, low-level motion processing may involve, at least in part, stereoscopic processing.

Global motion processing is not tuned for binocular disparity

An important goal of the visual system is the segmentation of image features into objects and their backgrounds. A primary cue for this is motion: when a region shares the same pattern of motion it is segregated from its surround. Three experiments were carried out to investigate whether the segmentation of image features on the basis of motion information is facilitated by the addition of binocular disparity. Coherence thresholds were measured for the discrimination of the global direction of motion of random dot kinematograms (RDKs) in which the relative disparity of the signal and noise dots was manipulated. When the signal dots were embedded in a three dimensional cloud of noise dots, coherence thresholds were similar to those measured when signal and noise dots were both presented with zero disparity. However, when the signal dots were separated from the noise dots in depth, global motion processing was strongly facilitated. These results were considered in terms of two models, one in which global motion is processed by disparity tuned mechanisms, the other in which the discrimination of the direction of motion is mediated by an attention-based system. It was concluded that global motion processing is not tuned for binocular disparity and that the facilitation of the discrimination of direction provided by binocular disparity in certain circumstances reflects the rôle of an attention-based system.

Stereoscopic and contrast-defined motion in human vision

There is considerable evidence for the existence of a specialized mechanism in human vision for detecting moving contrast modulations and some evidence for a mechanism for detecting moving stereoscopic depth modulations. It is unclear whether a single second-order motion mechanism detects both types of stimulus or whether they are detected separately. We show that sensitivity to stereo-defined motion resembles that to contrast-defined motion in two important ways. First, when a missing-fundamental disparity waveform is moved in steps of 0.25 cycles, its perceived direction tends to reverse. This is a property of both luminance-defined and contrast-defined motion and is consistent with independent detection of motion at different spatial scales. Second, thresholds for detecting the direction of a smoothly drifting sinusoidal disparity modulation are much higher than those for detecting its orientation. This is a property of contrast-modulated gratings but not luminance-modulated gratings, for which the two thresholds are normally identical. The results suggest that stereo-defined and contrast-defined motion stimuli are detected either by a common mechanism or by separate mechanisms sharing a common principle of operation.

Interactions of monocular and cyclopean components and the role of depth in the Ebbinghaus illusion

A study of size interactions of objects in three-dimensional space is reported. The canonical form of the Ebbinghaus illusion-test circles surrounded by large or small inducers-was used. Both monocularly visible (M) and purely cyclopean (C) objects were displayed stereoscopically to isolate the monocular and cyclopean components of the illusion. The results of two experiments indicate that: (i) depth plays a significant role when the test circles are cyclopean, but not when they are monocularly visible; and (ii) the size of C objects is affected equally by C and M inducers, but the size of M objects is affected much more strongly by M than by C inducers. In conclusion, possible explanations are offered for the main trends in the data, the most interesting of which is that cyclopean tests seem to be interacting only with the cyclopean component of monocularly visible inducers.
