The unsuspected cecoureterocele

A review of 54 consecutive cases of ectopic ureterocele treated at our institution in the last 15 years revealed 4 cases of the cecoureterocele variant. Although the diagnosis of ectopic ureterocele was made preoperatively, the more accurate diagnosis of cecoureterocele was not suggested by preoperative radiographic studies. The cecocele component was disclosed only at endoscopy or during open resection of the ureterocele. A review of the presentation, preoperative assessment, intraoperative management and outcome of each case of unsuspected cecoureterocele suggests that optimal surgical management of the cecocele itself does not require total removal.

Cecoureterocele: experience of three cases with special reference to the relevance of endoscopic incision

We report three cases of cecoureterocele to emphasize the salient features of this rare clinical entity. The differentiation of it from the usual ectopic ureterocele requires careful examination of the urethra by voiding cystourethrography and cystourethroscopy. We describe the management of these three cases with special reference to the endoscopic incision of the obstructing tissue.

Cecoureterocele

We report 2 cases of cecoureterocele to emphasize the salient features of this clinical entity. Both patients had a protracted clinical course with repeated episodes of urinary tract infection. A properly performed voiding cystourethrogram demonstrated the problem clearly. Both cases were managed by endoscopic resection of the obstructing tissue. We describe the clinical course, radiological findings and a treatment option for this elusive problem.

Bilateral cecoureteroceles causing urinary retention in the newborn

The cecoureterocele differs from the usual ectopic ureterocele because it extends outside the bladder and may obstruct the urethra. The differentiation requires careful examination of the urethra by a voiding cystourethrogram and cystoscopy. We describe the management of a girl with bilateral cecoureteroceles who presented as a newborn with urinary retention and sepsis. Surgical correction of the cecoureterocele may differ from that required for the usual ectopic ureterocele.

The non-obstructive ectopic ureterocele

We have seen 5 children with a non-obstructive ectopic ureterocele associated with an undilated upper pole collecting system. Thus the telltale signs of renal duplication found with obstruction of the upper pole were absent. Cystoscopy confirmed the diagnosis when retrograde injection of the ureterocele outlined a narrow ureter and small dysplastic kidney. Because reflux usually was present in the ipsilateral lower pole ureter (86 per cent) surgical treatment consisted of excision of the ureterocele and common sheath ureteral reimplantation. Removal of the small non-functioning upper renal segment was not necessary in most instances. The embryology of this anomaly is discussed.
