Abstract
The objective was to assess the impact of environmental complexity on affective state (anxiety) in fast- and slow-growing broilers (Gallus gallus domesticus) as they gain weight. Six hundred fast-growing broilers (Ross 708; "fast-growers") and 600 slow-growing broilers (Hubbard Redbro Mini; "slow-growers") were raised in 24 pens with simple (standard; SE) or complex (permanent and temporary enrichments; CE) environments. Six birds/pen underwent the attention bias test on day 23 (fast-growers only), 28-29, 35-36, 42-43, and 56-57 (slow-growers only), with individuals only tested once (n = 576). Proportion of birds feeding, time spent vigilant and latencies to eat and step were recorded. Greater vigilance and longer latencies indicate more anxiety. Slow-growers fed more (p = 0.001), were less vigilant (p = 0.003), and stepped sooner than fast-growers (p = 0.007). For both strains, likelihood of feeding was unrelated to weight in SE, but decreased with increasing weight in CE (p = 0.048). Birds in CE stepped sooner than birds in SE (p = 0.030). Vigilance increased with body weight (p = 0.024). These results indicate that affective state (anxiety) can change as birds gain weight, depending on environmental complexity and genetic strain. Overall, slow-growers showed reduced anxiety compared to fast-growers, across housing treatments or weights.

Abstract
Fear and anxiety are considered concerns for animal welfare as they are associated with negative affective states. This study aimed to pharmacologically validate an attention bias test (ABT) for broiler chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) as a cognitive bias test to determine anxiety. Two-hundred-and-four male Ross 708 broiler chickens were arbitrarily allocated to either the anxiogenic or control treatment at 25 days of age (n = 102/treatment). Birds from the anxiogenic group were administered with 2.5 mg of β-CCM (β-carboline-3-carboxylic acid-N-methylamide [FG 7142]) per kg of body weight through an intraperitoneal injection (0.1 ml/100 g of body weight). Birds from the control group were administered with 9 mg of a saline solution per kg of body weight. During ABT, birds were tested in groups of three (n = 34 groups of three birds/treatment) with commercial feed and mealworms as positive stimuli and a conspecific alarm call as a negative stimulus. Control birds were 45 s faster to begin feeding than anxiogenic birds. Birds from the control group vocalized 40 s later and stepped 57 s later than birds from the anxiogenic group. The occurrence of vigilance behaviors did not differ between treatments. This study was successful in pharmacologically validating an attention bias test for fast-growing broiler chickens, testing three birds simultaneously. Our findings showed that latencies to begin feeding, first vocalization, and first step were valid measures to quantify anxiety.

Abstract
Increased environmental complexity can improve animal welfare, depending on the resources provided and use by the animal. We provided chickens either with physical items that posed no biosecurity risk and were inexpensive (balls, chains, perches and rope) (P; n = 36) or additional visual human contact (10 min daily) (HC; n = 36) compared to farm-like standard control groups (C; n = 36) with 3 pens per treatment. Additional human contact reduced fear of humans at 35 days of age, but not general fearfulness. P birds required more inductions to induce tonic immobility compared to HC and C birds at 21 days of age. However, other indicators of fear (open field test and plasma corticosterone concentration) did not significantly differ. P birds favored the woodblock for resting, and the perch but preferred to sit underneath the perch rather than on top. When pecking items were not provided, C and HC chickens redirected their pecking behavior toward the litter. Overall, there was little evidence that our physical items improved the chickens' behavioral time budget, fear, physiological stress or production. Additional human contact should be investigated in large scale experiments to ensure its effectiveness to reduce fear of humans on farm.

Abstract
The neurotransmitter serotonin controls a variety of physiological and behavioral processes. In humans, mutations affecting monoamine oxidase (MAO), the serotonin-degrading enzyme, are highly deleterious. Yet, blind cavefish of the species Astyanax mexicanus carry a partial loss-of-function mutation in MAO (P106L) and thrive in their subterranean environment. Here, we established four fish lines, corresponding to the blind cave-dwelling and the sighted river-dwelling morphs of this species, with or without the mutation, in order to decipher the exact contribution of mao P106L in the evolution of cavefish neurobehavioral traits. Unexpectedly, although mao P106L appeared to be an excellent candidate for the genetic determinism of the loss of aggressive and schooling behaviors in cavefish, we demonstrated that it was not the case. Similarly, the anatomical variations in monoaminergic systems observed between cavefish and surface fish brains were independent from mao P106L, and rather due to other, morph-dependent developmental processes. However, we found that mao P106L strongly affected anxiety-like behaviors. Cortisol measurements showed lower basal levels and an increased amplitude of stress response after a change of environment in fish carrying the mutation. Finally, we studied the distribution of the P106L mao allele in wild populations of cave and river A. mexicanus, and discovered that the mutant allele was present - and sometimes fixed - in all populations inhabiting caves of the Sierra de El Abra. The possibility that this partial loss-of-function mao allele evolves under a selective or a neutral regime in the particular cave environment is discussed.

Abstract
The behavioral dynamics within a social group not only could depend on individual traits and social-experience of each member, but more importantly, emerges from inter-individual interactions over time. Herein, we first present a dataset, as well as the corresponding original video recordings, of the results of 4 behavioral tests associated with fear and aggressive response performed on 106 Japanese quail. In a second stage, birds were housed with conspecifics that performed similarly in the behavioral tests in groups of 2 females and 1 male. By continuously monitoring each bird in these small social groups, we obtained time series of social and reproductive behavior, and high-resolution locomotor time series. This approach provides the opportunity to perform precise quantification of the temporal dynamics of behavior at an individual level within different social scenarios including when an individual showing continued aggressive behaviors is present. These unique datasets and videos are publicly available in Figshare and can be used in further analysis, or for comparison with existing or future data sets or mathematical models across different taxa.

Abstract
New environments are known to be anxiogenic initially for many animals including the zebrafish. In the zebrafish, a novel tank diving (NTD) assay for solitary fish has been used extensively to model anxiety and the effect of anxiolytics. However, studies can differ in the conditions used to perform this assay. Here, we report the development of an efficient, automated toolset and optimal conditions for effective use of this assay. Applying these tools, we found that two important variables in previous studies, the direction of illumination of the novel tank and the age of the subject fish, both influence endpoints commonly measured to assess anxiety. When tanks are illuminated from underneath, several parameters such as the time spent at the bottom of the tank, or the transitions to the top half of the tank become poor measures of acclimation to the novel environment. Older fish acclimate faster to the same settings. The size of the novel tank and the intensity of the illuminating light can also influence acclimation. Among the parameters measured, reduction in the frequency of erratic swimming (darting) is the most reliable indicator of anxiolysis. Open source pipeline for automated data acquisition and systematic analysis generated here and available to other researchers will improve accessibility and uniformity in measurements. They can also be directly applied to study other fish. As this assay is commonly used to model anxiety phenotype of neuropsychiatric ailments in zebrafish, we expect our tools will further aid comparative and meta-analyses.

Abstract
Fear is a response to a known threat, anxiety is a response to a perceived threat. Both of these affective states can be detrimental to animal welfare in modern housing environments. In comparison to the well-validated tests for assessing fear in laying hens, tests for measuring anxiety are less developed. Perception of a threat can result in an attention bias that may indicate anxious affective states in individual hens following playback of an alarm call. In Experiment 1, an attention bias test was applied to hens that differed in their range access to show that hens that never ranged were more vigilant (stretching of the neck and looking around: P < 0.001) and slower to feed following the second alarm call playback (P = 0.01) compared with hens that ranged daily. All hens showed a reduction in comb temperature following the first alarm call (P < 0.001). In Experiment 2, an open field test was used to determine an effective dose of 2 mg/kg for the anxiogenic drug meta-Chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP) in adult laying hens. Hens dosed with 2 mg/kg showed reduced locomotion compared with a saline solution (P < 0.05). In Experiment 3, 2 mg/kg m-CPP or saline was administered to adult hens previously habituated to the open field arena to pharmacologically validate an attention bias test as a measure of anxiety. Hens dosed with m-CPP were slower to feed (P = 0.02) and faster to vocalize following a second alarm call playback (P = 0.03) but these hens did not exhibit the same vigilance behavior as documented in Experiment 1. The m-CPP hens also spent more time stepping and vocalizing (both P < 0.001) than the saline hens. An attention bias test could be used to assess anxiety. However, behavioral responses of hens may vary depending on their age or test environment familiarity, thus further refinement of the test is required. In these tests, 2 mg/kg of m-CPP resulted in motionless behavior when the environment was novel, but more movement and vocalizing when the environment was familiar. The extreme behavioral phenotypes exhibited by individually-tested birds may both be indicators of negative states.

Abstract
The identification of genetic variants responsible for behavioral variation is an enduring goal in biology, with wide-scale ramifications, ranging from medical research to evolutionary theory on personality syndromes. Here, we use for the first time a large-scale genetical genomics analysis in the brains of chickens to identify genes affecting anxiety as measured by an open field test. We combine quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis in 572 individuals and expression QTL (eQTL) analysis in 129 individuals from an advanced intercross between domestic chickens and Red Junglefowl. We identify 10 putative quantitative trait genes affecting anxiety behavior. These genes were tested for an association in the mouse Heterogeneous Stock anxiety (open field) data set and human GWAS data sets for bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and schizophrenia. Although comparisons between species are complex, associations were observed for four of the candidate genes in mice and three of the candidate genes in humans. Using a multimodel approach we have therefore identified a number of putative quantitative trait genes affecting anxiety behavior, principally in chickens but also with some potentially translational effects as well. This study demonstrates that chickens are an excellent model organism for the genetic dissection of behavior.

Abstract
Tonic immobility (TI), which can be divided into short (STI) or long (LTI) duration, is a character related to fear. Our previous study has demonstrated LTI phenotype and chronic corticosterone (CORT) administration retarded growth of breast muscle in broiler chickens. In order to investigate the mechanism behind the negative effects of LTI and CORT on growth, the level of mRNA transcription of several key genes linked to energy and protein metabolism was measured in muscle. LTI broilers showed lower levels of ATP, energy charge (EC) (p<0.01), and lower muscle glycogen content (p<0.05) but higher level of ADP (p = 0.08) than STI birds. CORT treatment elevated EC level (p<0.05) and reduced liver glycogen content (p<0.05). Real-time PCR results showed that STI chickens had higher mRNA expression of PPAR α (p = 0.06) and AMPK α (p = 0.09) than LTI. CORT significantly down-regulated α-enolase mRNA expression in breast muscle compared to control (p<0.05). Neither TI nor CORT altered gene expression in Akt/mTOR/p70s6k cascade pathway in muscle (p > 0.05). However, western blot results showed that LTI chickens exhibited higher protein content of total Akt (p = 0.05) and phosphorylated Akt (p = 0.06) than STI. CORT treatment decreased the total protein content of Akt (p = 0.09) and p70s6k (p = 0.08). These results suggest that the retardation of muscle growth by LTI and chronic CORT administration parallels a strong alternation in energy status but slight changes of Akt/mTOR/p70s6k cascade, indicating that a decrease in muscle growth induced by LTI and CORT might not be mediated through mTOR-dependent signaling pathways.

Abstract
OBJETIVO: Apresentar uma revisão sobre as características da atividade elétrica cerebral que acompanha a hipnose animal, estado induzido em laboratório em mamíferos por manipulações experimentais, bem como sobre as alterações encontradas no EEG durante o estado de hipnose, visando à discussão dos resultados encontrados na busca de evidências dos fundamentos filogenéticos que possam conduzir ao entendimento dos rudimentos neurais da hipnose humana. MÉTODO: Livros e bases eletrônicas de dados foram consultados. Critério de inclusão: artigos originais publicados entre 1966-2012. Critério de exclusão: artigos que se afastavam da visão eletroneurofisiológica da hipnose. RESULTADOS: Foram encontradas 662 referências, tendo sido selecionados os artigos e livros referenciados. Além desses artigos, foi incluído no estudo o artigo de Hoagland, publicado em 1928, que é um clássico na área de imobilidade tônica em vertebrados. CONCLUSÕES: O estado de hipnose humano resulta de processamentos em inúmeros circuitos paralelos distribuídos em uma complexa rede neuronal, envolvendo, dessa forma, uma ampla área do encéfalo. Na trajetória evolutiva, a grande ampliação dos recursos corticais pode ter tornado as respostas de imobilidade tônica passíveis de modulação consciente, respostas essas ainda presentes nos humanos e que se manifestam involuntariamente em situações de grande ameaça. Vários estudos têm evidenciado mecanismos neurofisiológicos capazes de reforçar a visão da hipnose não só como um eficiente recurso para procedimentos médicos e odontológicos, funcionando como auxiliar na analgesia e sedação, mas também como excelente ferramenta psicoterapêutica.

Abstract
Two hours after hatching (Day 0), groups of chicks from both sexes were housed either individually (IND) or socially in pairs (SOC) for 24 h. On Day 1, for each of the two conditions, half of the chicks were individually exposed to early novelty for 10 min, which comprised being placed in a novel-cage with small pebbles glued to the floor. The other half (controls) remained in the home-cage (IND-C and SOC-C). Thus, the IND-N group was exposed to early novelty, and the SOC-N+I group was exposed to early novelty and social isolation. Subsequently, all groups were mixed and socially reared until reaching 15 days of age. At this time, chicks were exposed to open field (OF) and tonic immobility (TI) tests. The IND-N group showed a shorter latency to ambulate in the OF test, shorter immobility duration in the TI test, a reduced plasma corticosterone concentration and increased flunitrazepam sensitive-GABA(A) receptor basal forebrain density compared with other groups, indicating that a neonatal novelty induced lower fearfulness in young chicks. In contrast, the effect of neonatal novelty was abolished by a simultaneous effect of social isolation in the SOC-N+I group. Thus, early post-hatch life events such as early novelty could improve a bird's later ability to cope with new stressful events. In addition, it is possible that both novelty and social isolation act on different neurobiological processes.

Abstract
Interaction between beta-carboline-3-carboxylic acid N-methylamide, betaCMAM, and nucleobases, nucleosides and nucleotides is studied in the ground state with UV-visible, (1)H NMR and (31)P NMR spectroscopies and in the first excited state, with steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Job plots show a predominant 1:1 interaction in both electronic states. Association constants are estimated from changes in the absorption spectra, and show that the strongest interaction is produced with the nucleosides: 2'-deoxyadenosine (dAdo) and thymidine (Thd), and with the mononucleotides: 2'-deoxycytidine 5'- monophosphate (5'-dCMP) and uridine 5'- monophosphate (5'-UMP). These results are corroborated by the upfield shifts of two (1)H NMR resonances of the betaCMAM indole group. The (31)P NMR resonance of nucleotides is shifted downfield, suggesting the presence of electrostatic or hydrogen bond interaction with betaCMAM. In the first electronic singlet excited state, static and dynamic quenching of betaCMAM emission is achieved upon addition of nucleobases, nucleosides and nucleotides. This has been analysed using Stern-Volmer kinetics.

Abstract
Fear is arguably the most commonly investigated emotion in domestic animals. In the current review we attempt to establish the level of repeatability and validity found for fear tests used on cattle, pigs, sheep and goats, poultry and horses. We focus the review on the three most common types of fear tests: the arena test (open field), the novel object test, and the restraint test. For some tests, e.g. tonic immobility in poultry, there is a good and broad literature on factors that affect the outcome of the test, the validity of the test and its age dependency. However, there are comparatively few of these well defined and validated tests and what is especially missing for most tests is information on the robustness, i.e., what aspects can be changed without affecting the validity of the tests. The relative absence of standardized tests hampers the development of applied ethology as a science.

Abstract
The effect of no treatment (undisturbed controls; CON) or 5 min exposure to immobilization stress (STR) before assessment of open-field behavior in Japanese quail lines selected for high (high stress; HS) or low (low stress; LS) plasma corticosterone (B) response to a similar immobilization stress was examined. During a 5-min test period in an open field, the following behavioral measurements were made: the latency to ambulate (LAMB), the number of open-field floor sectors entered (SECTORS), and freezing behavior (total time spent in complete silence and inactivity, apart from slight movements associated with respiration; FREEZE). A further measure of ambulation across time (ambulation rate; ARATE) was calculated using the formula: ARATE = (SECTORS/[(300 s test ceiling)--LAMB)]. The LS-quail showed higher (P < 0.04) ARATE and lower (P < 0.05) FREEZE behavior than did their HS counterparts. When compared with the CON, quail exposed to STR showed decreased ARATE (P < 0.02) and numbers of open-field SECTORS entered (P < 0.04). More importantly, the LS-CON exhibited a higher (P < 0.05) mean ARATE, less FREEZE behavior, and increased numbers of SECTORS entered than did the other 3 treatment groups (LS-STR, HS-CON, and HS-STR), all of which showed similar responses for these variables. The LS-CON vs. HS-CON findings support our contention that selection for reduced adrenocortical responsiveness has been accompanied by a concomitant decrease in underlying fearfulness (exemplified herein by heightened activity in the open field in LS-CON). We further show here that this relationship was eliminated by application of an acute stressor before open-field testing of LS quail, wherein a reduction in activity similar to that found in both HS quail treatment groups was evident in comparison to the LS-CON.

Abstract
Domestic chicken embryos are frequently used for avian developmental toxicity studies of polyhalogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, which are often injected into eggs with oil-based vehicles. The volume of toxicant and vehicle injected ranges from relatively low volumes (0.1-0.5 microl/g egg) to relatively high volumes (1.0 microl/g egg and above). Previous research from our laboratory suggested that high volumes of vehicle oil may disrupt normal growth of chicken embryos, possibly from hypoxia-like effects. This analysis explored the potential effects of vehicle volume on developing chicken embryos. We assessed standard measures of mortality, organ growth, body growth, and behavior from chickens developmentally exposed in ovo prior to incubation to low (0.1 microl/g egg) or high volumes (1.0 microl/g egg) of corn oil injected into airsacs or to no injection. The chickens receiving high volumes of oil showed increases in overall embryonic mortality and early embryo mortality compared to chickens receiving low volumes of oil or no injection. The chickens receiving high volumes of oil showed decreased activity during righting reflex, running time, visual discrimination, and olfactory aversion tests, and increased activity during an open-field activity test compared to chickens receiving low volumes of oil or no injection. Somatic endpoints do not appear to be affected by high volume injections. These results suggest that high volumes of vehicle injected into airsacs of eggs may lead to hypoxia-like conditions that increase embryonic mortality and disrupt simple behaviors. However, some effects of volume may diminish when injections are performed later in incubation.

Abstract
The open field is a very popular animal model of anxiety-like behavior. An overview of the literature on the action elicited by effective or putative anxiolytics in animal subjected to this procedure indicates that classical treatments such as benzodiazepine receptor full agonists or 5-HT(1A) receptor full or partial agonists elicit an anxiolytic-like effect in this procedure in most cases (approximately 2/3). However, compounds (triazolobenzodiazepines such as adinazolam and alprazolam, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) that have a different spectrum of therapeutic efficacy in anxiety disorders such as panic attacks, generalized anxiety disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder were poorly effective as anxiolytics in the open field test, suggesting that this paradigm may not model features of anxiety disorders. The procedure is also relevant for the study of compounds endowed with anxiogenic effects, as such effects were detected after treatments with benzodiazepine receptor inverse agonists or with corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) receptor agonists.

Abstract
Almost all vertebrates are capable of recognizing biologically relevant stimuli at or shortly after birth, and in some phylogenetically ancient species visual object recognition is exclusively innate. Extensive and detailed studies of the anuran visual system have resulted in the determination of the neural structures and pathways involved in innate prey and predator recognition in these species [Behav. Brain Sci. 10 (1987) 337; Comp. Biochem. Physiol. A 128 (2001) 417]. The structures involved include the optic tectum, pretectal nuclei and an area within the mesencephalic tegmentum. Here we investigate the structures and pathways involved in innate stimulus recognition in avian, rodent and primate species. We discuss innate stimulus preferences in maternal imprinting in chicks and argue that these preferences are due to innate visual recognition of conspecifics, entirely mediated by subtelencephalic structures. In rodent species, brainstem structures largely homologous to the components of the anuran subcortical visual system mediate innate visual object recognition. The primary components of the mammalian subcortical visual system are the superior colliculus, nucleus of the optic tract, anterior and posterior pretectal nuclei, nucleus of the posterior commissure, and an area within the mesopontine reticular formation that includes parts of the cuneiform, subcuneiform and pedunculopontine nuclei. We argue that in rodent species the innate sensory recognition systems function throughout ontogeny, acting in parallel with cortical sensory and recognition systems. In primates the structures involved in innate stimulus recognition are essentially the same as those in rodents, but overt innate recognition is only present in very early ontogeny, and after a transition period gives way to learned object recognition mediated by cortical structures. After the transition period, primate subcortical sensory systems still function to provide implicit innate stimulus recognition, and this recognition can still generate orienting, neuroendocrine and emotional responses to biologically relevant stimuli.

Abstract
Tonic immobility (TI) is considered to be an innate fear response characterized by a temporary state of profound and reversible motor inhibition. TI occurs in a wide range of species in a predator-prey confrontation and is hypothesized to be a terminal defence response occurring when there is physical contact between prey and predator. The objective of the present study was to investigate the validity of the TI model in guinea pigs for detection of anxiolytic and/or antidepressant drug activity. Compounds that reduced TI include the serotonin (5-HT) releaser fenfluramine, the 5-HT(1A) receptor agonists 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin (8-OH-DPAT) and buspirone, the 5-HT(2C/2B) receptor antagonist SB206553, the 5-HT(2A) receptor antagonist MDL 100.151 -- but only at doses thought also to inhibit 5-HT(2C) receptors--the noradrenaline (NA) reuptake inhibitor desipramine, the benzodiazepine inverse agonist FG-7142, the alpha(2)-adrenergic receptor antagonist yohimbine, the neurokinin (NK)(1) receptor antagonist L-733.060, and the NK(2) receptor antagonist SR-48968. Compounds that increased TI include the benzodiazepine agonists diazepam and alprazolam, and the alpha(2)-adrenergic receptor agonist clonidine. The selective 5-HT reuptake inhibitors citalopram, paroxetine and fluoxetine, the 5-HT(1A) receptor antagonist WAY100.635, the 5-HT(2C) receptor agonist MK-212, the 5-HT/NA reuptake inhibitor imipramine, the NA reuptake inhibitor talopram, the benzodiazepine antagonist flumazenil, the alpha(2)-adrenergic receptor antagonist idazoxan and the psychostimulant amphetamine did not have any effect. These findings indicate that the serotonergic, noradrenergic and neurokinin systems are involved in mediating or modulating TI behaviour in guinea pigs. The potential of TI as a behaviour for detecting anxiolytic-like effect may be questioned due to the contradictory effect of the benzodiazepine ligands, which may be attributed to the sedative and/or ataxic effects of the compounds. Nevertheless, there is preclinical evidence suggesting that 5-HT(1A) receptor agonists, 5-HT(2C) receptor antagonists and NK(1) and NK(2) receptor antagonists possess anxiolytic potential. Only when results of clinical investigations of the anxiolytic potential of non-benzodiazepine ligands (for example the NK receptor antagonists) are available, will it be possible to determine fully the predictive validity of the TI model.

Abstract
Day-old chicks of both sexes were individually categorised on the latency to peck pebbles and termed as high latency (HL), moderate latency (ML) or low latency (LL). Anxiolytic doses of diazepam diminished the latency only in the HL category, suggesting that it is the most anxious category. At 15 days of age, the LL category showed the lowest latency to ambulate in the open-field test, the lowest immobility duration in the tonic immobility test and insensitivity to anxiolytic doses of diazepam in both behavioural tests suggesting that it is the less anxious category. The increase of the central benzodiazepine receptor density induced by acute stressors was the highest in the most anxious and/or fearful HL category. There were more females than males in the LL category and inversely in the HL category there were more males. The results suggest that the fear pattern depends on the sex and inter-individual differences within a same sex which are stable across life. This could be used as a test for fear and/or anxiety state, and useful to choose fowls with the best performance later in life.

Abstract
The behavioral effects of crotoxin (CTX), the major component of Crotalus durissus terrificus venom, were studied in rats submitted to the open field, holeboard, and social interaction tests. CTX (100, 250, and 500 microg/kg, i.p.) was administered 2 h before the tests. In the open field, CTX reduced ambulation (250 microg/kg) and rearing (250 and 500 microg/kg) and increased grooming (100 and 250 microg/kg) and freezing (250 microg/kg). In the holeboard and social interaction, all the CTX doses evaluated decreased, respectively, head dip and head dipping, and social interaction time. The CTX-induced behavioral alterations could be attributed to its neuromuscular transmission blockade, but this possibility was ruled out because CTX (250 and 500 microg/kg, i.p., 2 h before the rotarod test) was unable to modify the rotarod performance of rats. The involvement of the benzodiazepine receptor in the CTX-induced behavioral alterations was investigated through the pretreatment (30 min before the tests, i.p.) of the animals with diazepam (1.2 mg/kg), or flumazenil (4 and 10 mg/kg). Both diazepam and flumazenil antagonized the CTX-induced behavioral alterations in the open field, holeboard, and social interaction tests. This study demonstrated that: (1) CTX is an anxiogenic compound; and (2) the gabaergic-benzodiazepine system may play a role in the CTX-induced anxiogenic effect.

Abstract
In a first experiment, four doses (ranging between 0.04 and 0.45 mg/kg of body weight) of the essential oil from Tagetes minuta L. were subcutaneously injected in two-day-old chicks and a dose-response curve assessed for escape performance in a T-maze test. The 0.1, 0.25 and 0.45 mg/kg doses impaired the first escape performance suggesting an anxiogenic-like effect of the essential oil. After 3 h the same chicks were tested for a second escape performance, without being injected again, and no differences were observed compared to controls, suggesting that the essential oil did not affect retention. Furthermore, the effects of the essential oil were observed in the three sections of the T-maze apparatus. So, the performance was impaired in the isolation chamber section, suggesting the induction of increased anxiogenic behaviour, and also in the mirror section, suggesting that the social reinstatement behaviour was modified by an increased anxiety level. Changes in the principal corridor section were not observed, suggesting that the locomotor activity was not affected by these oil doses. The second escape performance was not affected in any of the T-maze sections, confirming that these doses did not affect learning ability. In a second experiment, a middle dose of the essential oil (0.25 mg/kg) increased the tonic immobility reaction in 15 days old chicks similarly to an anxiogenic dose of FG 7142 (1 mg/kg), while an anxiolytic dose of diazepam (0.08 mg/kg) did not affect this behaviour. Taken together, the present results suggest that the essential oil from Tagetes minuta L. may exert a negative modulation on the GABAergic function without affecting the learning ability.
