Abstract
Spring-calving, crossbred (1/4 to 3/8 Brahman) primiparous (n = 56) and multiparous (n = 102) beef cows were used to evaluate the effects of progesterone, delivered via a controlled internal drug-releasing (CIDR) device, and prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) on estrous behavior, synchronization rate, initiation of estrous cycles, and pregnancy rate during a 2-yr period. To determine luteal activity, weekly blood samples were collected 3 wk before initiation of a 75-d breeding season. Treated cows received a CIDR for 7 d beginning on d -7 of the breeding season. On d 0, CIDR were removed, and cows receiving CIDR were administered PGF(2alpha); control cows received no treatment. Cows were exposed to bulls, and estrous activity was monitored using a radiotelemetry system for the first 30 d of the breeding season. Treatment with CIDR-PGF(2alpha) increased (P < 0.05) the number of mounts received (22.5 +/- 3.0 vs. 13.7 +/- 3.9 for CIDR-PGF(2alpha) vs. untreated control cows, respectively) but did not influence duration of estrus or quiescence between mounts. Number of mounts received and duration of estrus were greater (P < 0.05) in multiparous compared with primiparous cows. Synchronization of estrus was greater (P < 0.05) in cows treated with CIDR-PGF(2alpha) (56%) compared with control cows (13%) during the first 3 d of the breeding season. More (P < 0.05) anestrous cows treated with CIDR-PGF(2alpha) than anestrous control cows were in estrus during the first 3 d (59 vs. 12%) and 30 d (82 vs. 63%) of the breeding season. Treatment with CIDR-PGF(2alpha) decreased (P < 0.05) the interval to first estrus after treatment during the first 30 d of the breeding season compared with control cows (5.5 +/- 1.1 vs. 9.0 +/- 1.4 d). First service conception rate was greater (P < 0.05) in CIDR-PGF(2alpha)-treated cows compared with control cows. Cyclic cows at initiation of the breeding season had an increased (P < 0.05) 75-d pregnancy rate compared with anestrous cows, and the pregnancy rate tended (P = 0.10) to be greater in multiparous compared with primiparous cows. We conclude that treatment of Brahman-influenced cows with progesterone via a CIDR for 7 d, along with administration of PGF(2alpha) at CIDR removal, increases the number of mounts received, improves synchronization and first service conception rates, decreases the interval to first estrus after treatment, and may be effective at inducing estrous cycles in anestrous cows.

Abstract
A study was undertaken to determine the oestrus response and fertility rates of zebu cows treated with PRID alone or in combination with PGF2alpha. A total of 184 non-suckled cycling Bunaji cows were allotted randomly to four treatment groups of 46 animals per group as follows: group 1 (PRID-12), PRID was inserted for 12 days; group 2 (PRID+7+PGF2alpha-6, PRID was inserted for 7 days and PGF2alpha was administered intramuscularly 1 day prior to PRID withdrawal; group 3 (PRID-7+PGF2alpha-7, PRID was inserted for 7 days and PGF2alpha was administered intramuscularly on the day of PRID withdrawal; group 4 (2 x PGF2alpha-13, two intramuscular injections of PGF2alpha 13 days apart. At the end of each treatment period, the cows were observed for 7 days for behavioural oestrus and were inseminated 12 h following detection of oestrus. Pregnancy was diagnosed by rectal palpation 30-40 days post-insemination. The respective oestrus response rates were 78.3%, 76.1%, 87.0% and 89.1% for groups 1-4. While the corresponding pregnancy rates were 39.1%, 41.3%, 52.2% and 52.2%, the conception rates were 50.0%, 54.3%, 60.3% and 58.6% for groups 1-4. Although individual variations in progesterone levels were observed, the progesterone profiles were generally typical and normal. The results of the study have confirmed the effectiveness of the four regimes in synchronizing and controlling oestrus and ovulation in Bunaji cows. However, groups 3 and 4 showed some superiority over the other treatments. The results of this study provide feasible options from which clinicians involved in intensive breeding programmes and herd health fertility programmes can choose.

Abstract
Prolonged postpartum acyclicity in suckled beef cows reduces the calf crop, and causes economic loss to beef cattle producers. Once anterior pituitary LH stores have been replenished between Days 15 and 30 post partum in suckled beef cows, methods to initiate cyclicity include non-hormonal methods such as weaning of calves (either complete, temporary or partial), or exposure to bulls, and hormonal methods such as administration of GnRH (either single injection, intermittent injections, or continuous infusion), gonadotropins (eCG, FSH, hCG), and steroids (estrogens, anti-estrogens, and progestogens). Weaning is costly, reduces growth rate of weaned calves, and short cycles are common after weaning-induced ovulation. Exposure of cows to bulls is not practical and its effect is not predictable. Repeated injections of GnRH, or a single injection of hCG are not always effective; ovulation is always followed by a short cycle, and usually a return to acyclicity. Estrogens and anti-estrogens do not consistently shorten postpartum anestrus. Exogenous progestogens include intravaginal devices, such as controlled-internal drug release (CIDR) or progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID), norgestomet implants, and the feed-additive melengestrol acetate (MGA). Administration of exogenous progestogens is more practical than, and offers more advantages over, other treatments to shorten postpartum acyclicity in suckled beef cows. Mimicking the short cycle after Week 3 post partum, by maintaining circulating progesterone at subluteal concentrations or circulating progestin at intermediate concentrations, extends the life-span and allows terminal maturation of the postpartum dominant follicle as in cyclic cows, by initiating endogenous GnRH and LH pulses. This is followed by an LH surge, ovulation and normal cycles. The benefit from using exogenous progestogens after Week 3 post partum in suckled beef cows is that ovulation is induced, cyclicity is initiated, the resulting CL has a normal life-span and function, and there is no need to change management, such as weaning of calves. We present a model for the induction of ovulation and initiation of cyclicity using exogenous progestogens after Week 3 post partum in suckled beef cows.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to determine the conception rates of heifers time-inseminated following melengestrol acetate/prostaglandin F(2alpha) (MGA/PG) estrous synchronization treatment. In Experiment 1, timed insemination of heifers at 72 h after the PG injection, without regard for behavioral estrus, tended to improve (P < 0.15) the percentage of heifers pregnant to artificial insemination (AI) compared with that of synchronized heifers bred 12 h after they were first detected in estrus. In the timed-insemination treatment, heifers exhibiting behavioral estrus 48 to 72 h after PG tended to have an increased (P < 0.15) conception rate to AI compared with heifers exhibiting estrus within 48 h of PG administration. In Experiment 2, the number of heifers conceiving to AI following the MGA/PG estrous synchronization regimen was increased by mass insemination of all heifers not exhibiting estrus by 72 h after PG. The pregnancy rate to AI was higher in heifers with serum progesterone (P(4)) concentrations higher than 1 ng/ml compared with that of heifers with concentrations lower than 1 ng/ml. Of heifers with serum P(4) greater than 1 ng/ml, the pregnancy rate to AI tended to be higher when concentrations exceeded 2 ng/ml than when concentrations were 1 to 2 ng/ml. In cyclic heifers, timed insemination can increase the percentage of heifers pregnant after being synchronized with MGA/PG.

Abstract
Postpartum beef cows and heifers in Group 1 received 8 mug of buserelin on Day 0 (the beginning of the experiment) and 500 microg of cloprostenol (PGF) on Day 6 (GnRH I, n=54). In Group 2 (GnRH II, n=54), the females were injected with buserelin on Day 0 (8 microg) and Day 3 (4 microg), and PGF on Day 6 and Day 9 for females not detected in estrus previously. Animals were bred by AI 12 hours after the onset of estrus. Blood samples were collected on Day -11 and Day 0 to assess cyclicity and on Day 3 and Days 6 to 12 to examine luteal activity. Progesterone levels did not differ between the 2 groups between Days 0 to 9. In both groups, the proportion of spontaneous estruses from Days 0 to 6 was reduced. Precision of estrus was higher (P<0.005) in the GnRH II group than in the GnRH I group of cows that were detected in estrus between Days 6 and 9. The synchronization rate, interval to estrus, pregnancy and conception rates were similar in GnRH I and GnRH II groups. The conception rate and interval to estrus were similar in cyclic and acyclic cows. Increasing the number of buserelin injections enhanced the precision of estrus, but not the conception rate, without any detrimental effect on luteal activity and induced more estruses in postpartum acyclic beef cattle.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the efficacy of feeding melengestrol acetate (MGA) for 14 days and administering prostaglandin F(2)alpha (PGF) 17 days after MGA to synchronize or induce estrus in yearling beef heifers. The study involved 56 Angus (n = 19), Hereford (n = 15) and Simmental (n = 22) heifers that were assigned by breed and pubertal status to either MGA+PGF or to control groups. Heifers in the synchronized group were fed 0.5 mg MGA per head per day for 14 days from a grain carrier and were injected with 25 mg, i.m. PGF 17 days after the last daily feeding of MGA. Control heifers were fed from a grain carrier without MGA and were not treated with PGF. Heifers were classified as pubertal when concentrations of progesterono in the serum exceeded 1 ng/ml in 1 of 2 samples collected prior to the initiation of treatments. Blood samples were collected 7 days before and on the day that treatment with MGA or carrier began and 7 days before and on the day that PGF was administered. Progesterone concentrations in the serum were elevated ( > 1 ng/ml) in 61% (17 28 ) of the MGA+PGF-treated heifers and in 61% (17 28 ) of the control heifers prior to feeding MGA. However, concentrations of progesterone in the serum at the time PGF was administered differed (P<0.05) between MGA+PGF and control groups. Concentrations of progesterone in the serum exceeded 1 ng/ml in 100% (28 28 ) of the MGA+PGF-treated heifers and in 71% (20 28 ) of control heifers at the time PGF was administered (P<0.05). All heifers were inseminated 12 hours after the first detected estrus. Twenty-two of 28 (79%) of the MGA+PGF-treated heifers exhibited estrus within 6 days after PGF compared with 9 of 28 (32%) of control heifers (P<0.05). The conception rate at first service did not differ between MGA+PGF and control groups (64% and 67%, respectively). Synchronized pregnancy rates were higher (P<0.05) for MGA+PGF-treated heifers than for control heifers (14 28 , 50% vs 6 28 , 21%). Increased concentrations of progesterone in serum at the time PGF was administered and higher pregnancy rates during the synchronized period among MGA+PGF-treated heifers demonstrate the efficacy of this treatment for use in estrus synchronization. Moreover, this treatment may have a potential effect on inducing puberty in breeding age heifers.

Abstract
Three hundred and ten yearling heifers of various breeds were used in five trials to compare two estrus synchronization treatments. Treatment 1 consisted of Melengestrol Acetate-Prostaglandin F(2)alpha (MGA-PGF(2)alpha). Heifers were fed 0.5 mg MGA/head/d for 14 to 16 d. Sixteen or 17 d after the final MGA feeding, heifers were injected i.m. with 25 mg PGF(2)alpha. Treatment 2 consisted of Syncro-Mate B (SMB). Heifers were given a 9-d norgestomet implant plus an injection containing 3 mg norgestomet and 5 mg estradiol valerate i.m. at implant insertion. Heifers were observed for estrus at 6-h intervals for 120 h after the end of treatments and were artificially inseminated 12 to 18 h after observed estrus. Heifers synchronized with MGA-PGF(2)alpha and SMB had a similar (P > 0.10) estrous response (83.4 vs 90.2%) and a similar (P > 0.10) degree of synchrony (71.8 vs 79.0%) following treatment. However, the synchronized conception rate (68.7 vs 40.6%) and the synchronized pregnancy rate (57.3 vs 36.6%) were higher (P < 0.01) in MGA-PGF(2)alpha than SMB heifers. Breeding season pregnancy rates were similar in both treatment groups. Heifers in both groups that were classified as cycling prior to initiation of treatment had improved reproductive performance following synchronization compared with those classified as noncycling. Based on higher synchronized conception and pregnancy rates and lower labor requirements and drug costs, the MGA-PGF(2)alpha system appears to be a better method to synchronize estrus in beef heifers than the SMB system.

Abstract
Two trials were conducted to evaluate treatments combining progesterone pretreatment and prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) on estrus response, pregnancy and calving rate in heifers. Treatments in Trial 1 were 1) control (T(1); n=59), 2) 25 mg PGF(2alpha) on Day 0 (T(2); n=58), 3) 150 mg progesterone (P(4), i.m.) in corn oil on Day -24 plus PGF(2alpha) (T(3); n=61), and 4) 150 mg P(4) on Day -5 plus PGF(2alpha) (T(4); n=59). Trial 2 had T(2) and T(4) only. Heifers were artificially inseminated 8 to 16 h after detection of estrus for 10 and 5 d in Trials 1 and 2, respectively. In Trial 1 more heifers in T(3) and T(4) showed estrus by 72 h compared to T(1) and T(2). In T(3), percentages were greater at 84 and 96 h than in T(1) and T(2). There were no differences between T(3) and T(4) or T(1) and T(2) over time. Cumulative distributions of responses showed that more heifers in T(3) and T(4) were in estrus by 84 h after PGF(2alpha) than after other treatments, while T(3) showed the greatest total number of heifers in estrus by 84 h; this difference persisted for 180 h. In Trial 2, percentages of heifers observed in estrus for T(1) and T(4) were not different. Average interval from PGF(2alpha) to estrus was shorter in Trial 1 for T(3) heifers compared to other treatments. No difference was observed in interval to estrus for T(2) and T(4) in Trial 2; this interval averaged 58 h. Artificial insemination pregnancy rates were not different among treatments in either trial and averaged 67.4%. In Trial 1, a greater proportion of heifers in T(2), T(3) and T(4) calved by 35 days into the calving season compared to T(1), but in Trial 2 calving rates for T(2) and T(4) were not different. Progesterone pretreatment combined with PGF(2alpha) appeared to enhance estrus synchronization without influencing either pregnancy or calving rates.

Abstract
Effect of stage of the estrous cycle at the time of prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) injection on subsequent reproductive events in beef females was studied in four trials involving 194 animals. Cycling animals were given two injections of 25 mg PGF(2alpha) 11 days apart or, in some cases, the interval was altered to allow the second injection to fall on a specific day of the cycle. Day of estrous cycle at time of the second injection was determined by estrous detection. Interval from the second PGF(2alpha) injection to the onset of estrus (interval to estrus) was shorter (P<.01) in heifers than in cows. Both cows and heifers injected on days 5 to 9 (early cycle) had a shorter (P<.01) interval to estrus (estrus = day 0) than did those injected on days 10 to 15 (late cycle). Conception rate was lower (P<.05) for early-cycle heifers than for late-cycle heifers inseminated by appointment at 80 hours. There was no significant difference in conception rate of early-or late-cycle heifers or cows inseminated according to estrous detection or early- or late-cycle cows inseminated at 80 hours. Progesterone concentrations in blood samples collected in heifers at 4-hour intervals after the second PGF(2alpha) injection on either day 7 or day 14 declined linearly (P<.05) through 36 hours. Day of the estrous cycle at PGF(2alpha) injection had no effect on rate of progesterone decline, even though heifers injected on day 7 had a shorter (P<.05) interval to estrus. All animals whose cycle length was not affected by the second PGF(2alpha) injection were treated on days 5 through 8 of the cycle, indicating that PGF(2alpha) was less effective in regressing the corpus luteum between days 4 and 9 of the cycle than later in the cycle.

Abstract
Injection of estradiol valerate in conjunction with receiving a norgestomet ear implant (Syncro-Mate-B) reduced plasma progesterone (P<.001) and FSH (P<.02) and increased estradiol (P<.01) in postpartum cows during the treatment period. Occurrence of LH and FSH peaks (P<.05) varied between 12 and 48 hr following removal of SMB implants and estrous behavior was minimal. FSH was strongly correlated to LH and was inversely related to progesterone in untreated cows and to estradiol in treated cattle. Syncro-Mate-B suppressed luteal activity and peak gonadotropin release during treatment and elicited variable endocrine and behavioral response following treatment.
